Damnation Dev Diary Looks at Level Design

The latest dev diary from out of Blue Omega, the team behind the upcoming Damnation title, focuses on level design and how they as a team, tried to make Damnation become a shooter unlike no other.

“All the environments have multiple paths through them, giving players real freedom in deciding how to go about tackling the enemy,” says Jacob Minkoff, Lead Game Designer. “Some will prefer to run straight at them with their trusty Railroad Spike Gun. Others would prefer to climb and leap right to the top, avoiding direct fire fights by sniping and raining down death from above.”

Damnation will be available throughout Europe on May 22nd.

I think this might have to be a birthday present for me. I really like the way that this game seems to be developing. Its great to see designers work on using the computing power of today's consoles to expand what we've come to expect from basic gametypes.

This is looking sweet, maybe something that will take ages to complete. Not many games are long enough these days.

the design itself (huge canyon) looks nice. but i dislike the textures of the building, they remind me of lost planet. the trees in the last few seconds look shitty too. well, we'll see :)

I guess codemasters will own may 26th with this being released along with Op 2! But I'd have to go with Op2 over this, that game is gonna be a hit, this one may go under some radars...

It looks like it could be a great SP game, but the MP videos (on the Codemaster site) look like MP will blow. If they keep the achievements SP only, I'll most likely pick this up, doesn't look good enough for me to have another 50% completion game on my card though.

Hope that works out I really do. All I fear is a crystal maze moment "I cant see what I've got to do!" and there you ar stuck not knowing where you can go or should be going.

Cult-hit possibly? Looks very original and I'll definitely try it. Long term appeal? We'll see...

Might have to think about this one. They should release a demo, then I would know whether or not to get this. :P

It may be worth a rent and that's a big long exclamatory maybe. I saw this awhile back and it didn't look worthwhile at all. Poor level design, crappy third person view, a female character that fits all the stereotypes of being unrealistic (come on fake silicone tits popping out of her top in an era where everything is run off steam, crap!!!), the MP looks half rate at best, the vehicle sequences are a rip off, and it's being made by a virtual unknown. I don't know developers are getting really lazy these days and this game looks like it's going to be a product of that laziness. Also a game like this doesn't even need MP, developers need to focus on stronger SP experiences unless you can put your MP and SP in the realm of Halo and Call of Duty.
