Resident Evil 7 To Be Announced at E3, Returning to Horror Roots - Report

While previous rumours have noted that Resident Evil 7 has possibly been in development since late 2012, and Capcom has already talked about returning to the series horror roots for the next game, a new batch of rumours have cropped up pointing to an E3 2016 announcement, and further confirmation that it'll be returning to its roots.

The info comes from Japanese analyst Serkan Toto, who on Twitter states the following: "1) About Resident Evil 7: Yes, it's in development. The entire game will go back to RE's horror roots and (essentially) be a clean slate." Toto adds in a second tweet: "2) They will show it at E3. The RE7 team hired Jordan Amaro, a designer who previously worked on MGS V and P. T. at Kojima Productions. /end".

Should these details prove accurate, it's heartening to know that Amaro, who has worked on Konami's scary as hell P.T. could be on board for Resident Evil 7. A few years ago, we interviewed Resident Evil producer Masachika Kawata, who told us it would be "very difficult" to return to the series' roots. Here's hoping they're having a go at it anyway.

If Resident Evil 7 is announced at E3 2016, rest assured that we'll be there bringing you all of the details.

  • it would truly be nice if this is true... i'm guessing many fans of the series have been waiting for this to happening!
  • wont believe it till i see it not very optimistic about capcom especially with Umbrella Corps coming out soon which looks shit.
  • Let's hope it feels and plays like resi 2. God I can't wait for the remaster.
  • They promised resident evil 6 would return to its horror roots, they said it a few times. Look how that ended up. Love Resident Evil but I am sick of them being not so good.
  • Ive been waiting for this for 10 years. Right since Resi 4 came out. If this truelly does happen and they dont botch it, theres hope for the series yet!!!
  • Yep same won't believe till I see because 6 was supposed to go back to roots. But at best 1 campaign has some very very slight horror elements. The rest was pure shit.
  • Excited!
  • Good news if this is true, though i'll be waiting till the gameplay before i start considering any hype.
  • Well like I said in another Resi article, they must see how well the REmakes are doing so hopefully they really are gonna make it feel like the older ones, with a modern feel. Doom proved that it can be done.
  • Here is what they need to do: - 1 Campaign with co-op(none of this 2-3 POV's crap) - The tone of 4 - The HUD/UI of 5 - The movement/combat system of 6, and you'll have a great game.
  • I really want fixed camera and tank controls. It would feel different for a lot of people and really remind us of old RE but with higher resolution and textures.
  • Just make it scary capcom. The controls in 4,5 and 6 where good but 5 and 6 just wasnt scary at all. Get it back in a mansion with decent melee and no zombies dropping ammo boxes and shooting guns.
  • After what happened in 6 storyline wise, where do you go from here I wonder.
  • as long as they don't go back to the original series' camera we good
  • Just like they said 6 or Revelations 2 was a return to the horror roots.
  • The entire game will go back to RE's horror roots and (essentially) be a clean slate. lol Iv heard that before. /pass
  • I actually liked RE6 and wouldn't be overly disappointed if we got another one of those, but the idea of Resident Evil returning to its roots is very intriguing. But to be honest, I can easily see them putting a token "horror" element or two in but essentially sticking to the RE5 and 6 formula.
  • They've stated they were going back to the roots for every game after RE4. I won't believe them til they actually fucking manage it.
  • While many fans would love to see it return to it's roots, I personally never found the original games to be all that scary, so I can't really get excited myself. The series didn't click for me until I was able to play it in co-op, and to that end, 5 remains the best in my book. Granted, I won't complain about it returning to its roots like some will, I just probably won't buy it if it ditches the co-op campaign.
  • I need to hurry up and get round to playing number 6!
  • Coop and scary don't go together. There's a reason all the great horror games are single player only.
  • @22 Agreed. A co op buddy is essentially a lifeline that's always there in a horror game, and that takes the fun and atmosphere away from it. Isolation is a key component. I still remember how freaky Condemned was.
  • Hi, I'm from the future. Relax everyone, it's good
