House-Kidder Entertainment Announces U.S. Video Game Tournament Offering $1,000,000 Prize

House-Kidder Entertainment Announces U.S. Video Game Tournament Offering $1,000,000 Prize
Written Friday, February 27, 2009 by James Parkin

The NCAA Football 09 $1,000,000 Challenge, sponsored by House-Kidder Entertainment, is a national tournament that gives NCAA Football 09 video gamers the chance to compete against each other in single-elimination competition on the Xbox 360 game system for a shot at a Grand Prize that could be as much as $1,000,000. The actual amount of the prizes will be determined based on the number of participants in the Challenge.

The inaugural Challenge will be limited to 65,536 participants nationwide and is open to US residents eighteen years of age or older who pay the one hundred fifty dollar entry fee. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center located in Memphis, TN, and a second National Charity to be named in the next few weeks.

The Challenge will feature 64 Preliminary Session Tournaments in 32 major metropolitan cities around the United States. Preliminary Session Tournament cities include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia and 26 others. For a complete list of Challenge cities visit the Challenge's official website at http://www.housekidder.com.

The winner of each Preliminary Session Tournament will win a cash prize and an expense paid 6 day/5 night vacation to Orlando, FL this summer to compete against the other Preliminary Session winners in the Championship Finals. The winner of the Championship Finals will win a Grand Prize that could be as much as $1,000,000 depending on participation in the Challenge.

The Challenge is now accepting entries and registration will remain open until April 5, 2009. Actual Tournament Sites, Dates, and the Prize Package amounts will be announced on the Challenge's Official Website no later than April 11, 2009.

When asked why they are sponsoring the Challenge, Jon House, Tournament Organizer, said "We thought that this would be a fun way to raise money for Le Bonheur's. Plus, it would be cool for the winner of the Challenge to be able to tell their parent's 'See, I wasn't wasting all that time playing video games!'"

This is a great idea and whilst maybe the prize is huge i definatley think other games should have organized competitions like this one rewarding the gamers.

Wow... this is pretty cool. Makes me kinda wish I was into sports games.
Things like this should be done more often. It gives gamers a way to really compete with each other while offering great rewards for the winner and for people that really need it (charities).
Kudos to House-Kidder Entertainment.

why isn't it for a real tournament game (a FPS?)

They really expect 65 thousand people to pay a hundred fifty dollars?

@ #5
Most likely so anyone can participate. Most FPS games are M rated.
This is only a guess and nothing more.

@#7

"open to US residents eighteen years of age or older"

Being M rated means nothing when those that can play are already over 18. I'd say more because it is because EA is helping with it.

If they really want everyone to participate, why is the entry fee so high? I best they'll get a few thousand, but not much more.

Ah, missed that part. Good call. Obviously I was wrong.
So I have no idea why this is never done for FPS then.

(The inaugural Challenge will be limited to "65,536" participants) Are they trying to go all Left For Dead on us all or something? lol :D

To everyone who's whining about this being a sports game, and not something "awesome" like Halo or Call of Duty. Take a step back.

This isn't about the tournament prize or the game, this is a charity event with a game that would be open to more than a specific field. Not everyone enjoys killing other people, and gloating over their super awesome K/D ratio.

I'm pretty sure I'll be attending, even though I'll get slaughtered in the first round since I'm horrible at sport games. But I will be attending just because I know the money will be going to a better cause than if I had just spend the money on beer or a dinner out with a friend.

@16 yes that's the point of the tournament but there would be a hell of a lot more participants if they did a popular fps

To People complaining,
Lets just be honest here.
Even if it wasn't a sports game, and it was a FPS game that they picked for this tournament, you would then just bitch about how it costs too much to join up.

Friday, February 27, 2009 @ 03:45:05 PM

No, they did it in a game that anyone can win b/c mistakes can be made.... If an MLG player of COD or Halo signed up obviously their going to be better than half the field... So why not choose a game based on anything can happen in a football game its about strategy where as an FPS strategy would a) be non existent outside of a clan and then the different maps would play to a players strengths or weakness.... thats obviously why a sports game was chosen.

Note that Cildren Medical Center might have children who's witnessed or have been acustomed to a violent atmosphere. L4D, Halo 3, and COD are all very violent and would be a very unmoral like thing to do to to set a tournament based around some of t his nature.

Example. Lets play a game where the point of it is to get Cancer. But lets have the funds of this game go to a Cancer type charity.
Anyone see the problem in that?

True 150$ is alot, but know that alot of the people people who would sign up for this are dedicated football players in real life, or dedicated football GAME fans. They know the risk involved and know that they could lose out in the first round, but that is also the fun of it.

I say kudos to House-Kidder Entertainment, and goodluck to everyone who participates

I'd like to know how much they are giving to charity. 65,536 at $150 is nearly TEN million dollars! It's unlikely they will get that many entrants for the price, and I realize there are fees that go to the venues and on-site equipment necessary for these, but wow. Supply needs to meet demand at some point, and selling a few thousand at $150 is NOTHING compared to selling all 65K at $50 a pop! Or even just make it the price of a brand new game ($60) and call it good. I feel like they dropped the ball...incomplete pass.

Why don't they pick a game where you can't put your wide receiver at quarterback and run by everyone on the option. haha

several good points here addressing the various moral and cultural aspects to this story - good work x360a users!!

my own view is that this should help competitive gaming push further into the mainstream and so that is good for us all - if this does well then more such tournaments could follow and then perhaps we'd see the grumbles posted here addressed (e.g. why a sports game, i don't live in the US...).

pats on the back all round!

It's limited to 65,536. That is just the maximum number. As it states in this sentence below, depending on how many people attend will affect the the prizes.

"The winner of the Championship Finals will win a Grand Prize that could be as much as $1,000,000 depending on participation in the Challenge."

Saturday, February 28, 2009 @ 10:28:03 AM

If all 65,536 people pay the 150 dollar entry fee, then the grand total would be 9,830,400 Dollars. Almost 10 times the grand prize. And I cant expect them to give all the 8 million dollars to charity

Saturday, February 28, 2009 @ 06:17:03 PM

Thats a ton of cash #39! I guess they don't expect a lot of participation then if the grand prize is only 1/10th the total input costs. Still... thats a lot of bones for playing NCAA.

@14 L4D only did that to top Dead Rising =P

Anyway, getting 65 thousand people to shell out 150 bucks in the middle of an economic crisis isn't exactly going to be a walk in the park for EA.

Sunday, March 01, 2009 @ 09:28:20 AM

@12: NERRRRRRRRDDDDDDD!!!

Yeah, you folks are right, though. I seriously doubt that this many people would shell out that crapload of money when the chances of winning are 1 in 65,536. Let me just tear my paycheck in half, and feed the smaller half to a dog.

If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
