Resident Evil 5 Shorter than Anticipated

Resident Evil 5 Shorter than Anticipated
Written Monday, February 23, 2009 by Dan Webb

UK mag, Xbox World 360 are reporting that the upcoming survival horror title from Capcom is measuring in at a paltry 8 hours which will surprise many after Resident Evil 4's rather lengthy affair.

The mag who have already completed the full version of Resident Evil 5 clocked their first playthrough in at "seven hours, thirty-six minutes and one second." That time does not include the cutscenes which for all intents and purposes adds up to 80 additional  minutes.

The mag states "this time was achieved in single player and on the normal difficulty. This was not a speed-run, nor were we pressured for time."

Of course, the longevity of the title will depend on replayability but is that still too short for you to spend top whack on it?

Initially this sounds disappointing but I wouldn't mind shorter games if it was high on content and replayability.

resi 4 wasn't much longer. first time maybe but after you know where you're going it's really not. resi 1-3 aren't very long games either. i know they're old and shit but still. resi 5 will still rock despite length...

@ #2 and #3...epic fail...on topic though, that does suck to hear that, as I was hoping for this game to be longer than that. Here's to hoping that the replay value is high.

LOL epic fail, #2,3 knobbyrots! Why can't it be longer, damn I was so looking forward to gritting it out for a good 20 hours or so, like you said especially after Resi4.

It'll still probably be a sick game, and if its anything like RE4 then the replay value will be unlimited...

Monday, February 23, 2009 @ 09:43:50 AM

Yes it is too short for a game. You buy a game, beat it in 7-8 hours and then you just stare off at your television thinking... "Was that it!?" People, especially nowadays with the way the worlds economy is, are truly looking for good value for their hard earned dollar, pound, euro, whatever currency have you. I think it is too short for a game which is why rental stores both local and online are undoubtedly doing very well and will continue to prosper.

As much as I hate collecting thing in games, it does give replayability to games. I'm kind of disappointed to read this as I'm a huge RE series fan and look forward to this game.

Monday, February 23, 2009 @ 09:49:18 AM

At #9: I can't say I agree with that logic at all. It's that kind of thinking that makes developers/studios churn out any crap, knowing people will play it solely on it's name(i.e. Guitar Hero). I am still getting this game, however, I am losing interest in the Resident Evil franchise, seeing as it's more of a shooter/action title and less like a survival horror title like it used to be.

But back to the topic at hand...8 hours is real disappointing.

I've completed all of the other Resi games in about 1-2 hours for the S ranking, except for 4 and Code Veronica which naturally took longer but I still got an S rank on both of those in well under 8 hours.

Resi games have never been that long and, for me, the first play is to figure out what to do before going for an S rank. BRING IT ON!

If players only but games for mp then why do you have gaming consoles? mp is the lowest end of any game, sure it's fun but never tally's what campaign's have.I already payed for my re5 in full which will rock as hard as 1,2,4 and cv! 3 was ok but not as strong as the rest of the series.

Well I played the demo a lot and that was what, 20 minutes a level? So the length of the game doesn't really bother me and from what I've seen of the game so far it's gonna be awesome enough.

Monday, February 23, 2009 @ 10:07:20 AM

Quality over quantity and that. I can see myself doing at least 3 playthroughs (Normal, Hardest difficulty & Co-Op) so as long as it's a solid, fun 8 hours, I'm not too concerned.

I signed up to this site just to tell #3 he's a idiot. Resident evil 1-3 are better than you, better than your face, and better than christmas, all rolled into one.

On topic I completed Resi 1 in 45 mins and 7 seconds, yet it's one of the best games i've ever played. It's not about length, it's about delivery and replay value.

Monday, February 23, 2009 @ 10:28:48 AM

i personally cant see much replay value in this game tbh, resi has never been a series for replay value. It depends on the gamer and whether they wanna do the same thing numerous times for no reward (except maybe achievements) Based on the demo the only replay value would be going about killing the bosses in a slightly different way.
Im biased tho cos i hated the demo with a passion. Come on- No movement while aiming? Seems a bit last gen if u ask me no matter how 'resi style' it is.

I was planning on getting this, but after this news, I don't know. I'm a fan of RE only after 4, and that one I had a lot of fun with. I don't remember how long it took me on my first run of that game, because I like to explore every nook and cranny before I start going for the fast playthroughs. So, so far this game has released a demo where the controls play like shit, and now it's shorter than some current DLC, i think this is explains why amazon are selling it at £29.99, it also explains why Capcom won't be getting any £ out of my for it!

I've always wanted a co-op resident evil game, I hope they add a real multiplayer though and don't make the achievements as hard as megaman9.

I rather a long as game with not much replay value, like most RPGs. That way, once you beat the story, you can put it to rest, only to bring it out a year later and enjoy it again :).

Can people just stop for a minute? Three other "official" sources say otherwise on the game time. Go with the majority folks.

UK Playstation Mag stated 18 hours, so did GamePro Germany. OXM and OPM said 15-20. Other people have disputed the author of that article on forums, and they have also played RE5, seen people play RE5 at conventions. They said it takes 8 hours just to complete three chapters.

Don't believe one article when four others say the opposite.

I have to say, I'm the biggest Resi fan going, but I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be disappointed come March 13th. I've been looking forward to this for ages, since I saw the very first trailer, but the demo and varying reports suggest this is Resi 4 with shiny graphics and a few half arsed badly implemented ideas to keep with the crowd (a cover system etc). Now it's short too.

Resi has never disappointed me. Ever. But I am genuinely concerned for this installment. Since 4, we have had a genuine slew of quality 3rd person shooters (Gears and Dead Space leap immediately to mind) and resi 5 just doesn't seem to have evolved.

lease Capcom, prove me wrong.

"Average price of a 90 minute movie on DVD = $15

At $60, a 6 hour game is approximately the same value for $."

This is the stupidest thing I've ever read.

And this is why there's another higher difficulty and achievements! Seriously, 8 hours is fine with me, cause the 3rd one took me and my cousin 5 and a half hours :b
I'm still interested. Maybe DLC will also come, so my hopes are still up!

The shorter the sweeter perhaps? Just because a game is 20+ hours or even 15+ doesn't make it better... I know for a lot of people this will be a disappointment but I would rather play a good short game then a game that's long and sucks. Not to say that if it were long it would suck but if you played 20 hours in a game and it sucks, you would be even more pissed off then playing a game that is shorter and sucks......

For those us us that go for as many achievements as we can, this isn't bad news at all. We don't play games once and then move on. Going for achievements will add many many hours of game play.

Hardly a surprise... RE4 wasnt particularly length at all... 10-12 hrs tops.... 8 hours has unforunately become pretty average for games these days... There are some that have more breadth as well as depth but on the whole, action games are about guns and thrills... and since RE has moved distinctly away from the Survival horror genre to the survival action one, its not a shock.... if you want length - go for an RPG

Eh, I don't know if this is too bad. Devil May Cry 4 can take me 4 hours, but it's got some crazy replay value. Short games generally have higher replay value (Dead Rising, Devil May Cry 4), while as other games like Oblivion or Fallout 3 you spend many hours on at a time, but it's not something you'd particularly like to do all over again.

Eh, I have no problem seeing as I normally play though any RE game more than once so I can get my hands on unlockables. (Unlimited Rocket launcher anyone?) I switched my controls to classic RE4 controls on the demo and had a blast. The only problem I had is that the finshers didn't feel as solid as they did in RE4. I am still getting it on release though.

I've played through Re 4 about 5 times now.. Never gets me bored. I just love... umm.. all about it :) And trust me, the game will last longer since you guys hopefully won't skip the cutscenes and playing on the hardest difficulty is the only way to play this game ;)

I don't see why everyone is complaining about the length. It only took a few hours to beat L4D but I have played through that game countless times. Up the difficulty, play with a friend, and enjoy.

That's ok for this game, just as long as FF13 isn't just 8 hours long. But that short of a time makes me think that there will be some serious DLC later. But for me it has to just be a weekender.

im kinda surprised but if its good we wont have to worry about its length, and if they throw in some bonus modes like mercenaries maybe made it multiplayer? (Left 4 Dead, Nazi Zombies) that could really boost its replay value

Monday, February 23, 2009 @ 09:30:55 PM

Scratch RE4 but most Resident Evil stories are pretty well set-up and have for my money, some of the best pacing ever seen.

Resident Evil 4 was pure fun, the demo for 5 is good. Didn't blow me away like RE4 did but I'm positive I'll like it at the very least.

And wait, we're on a site for achievement hunters and we're complaining about length. Let's wait and see what the achievements look like before we go and say how long we'll play this game.

Monday, February 23, 2009 @ 09:47:27 PM

I've also read other sources stating that RE5 was closer to 15 hours not 8. That would mean that each chapter of the game would only take about an hour to complete. If it does turn out to be only 8 hours long, I'll still get it.

I'd rather play a short game that's awesome than a long game that's boring or just seems to drag on and on and on and...

for me if a game is over 10 hours or so it had better be really freakin good or else I just start to lose interest. I'm actually just now getting around to finishing my game of Eternal Sonata that I started last summer

To be honest, I'm glad it's shorter. I have so many video-games now that it's ridiculous, and I hardly have time to play them all. It'll be nice to pick up and play through a game in just a couple of sittings for once.

Im still gonna buy it reguardless. RE4 wasnt much longer anyway, and the game needs to be played through multiple times. Besides, it'll probably take the majority of people longer on their first playthrough.

This isn't US playing it, this is a magizine, they don't have time to play a game to it's full potential and length. They might have rushed through it as fast as possible to make it into the mag. I can finish RE4 in 4 hours (10 hours on first playthrough), I'm sure RE5 will be fine.

Just as long as I can still have fun on my 5th play-through like i did with RE4 I think 8 hrs is ok.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
