Halo Wars Demo Now Available

Halo Wars Demo Now Available
Written Thursday, February 05, 2009 by Dan Webb

The much anticipated Halo Wars demo is now available for everyone to download, and by everyone, we mean everyone; no region restrictions. Rejoice!

The 1.40 GB demo allows you to test out the first two mission of the campaign as well as giving you a chance to sink your teeth in to 1 of the 14 multiplayer maps, "Chasms."

Like it? Hate it? Everything you expected and more? A letdown? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Played it just now. Controls are good, better than c and c. LB highlights all units. X moves them and attacks a target, press Y on a target and units perform special ability. Really simple base building system. Campaign missions short but sweet. This said, will not get this straight away, will wait for it to be 30 quid or less.

Love it, but I'm a sucker for Halo and RTSs so this is right up my alley. Controls are very intuitive, which was the biggest worry I think.

Pretty straight forward....simple, clean and smooth....the way an RTS needs to be on a console if we can only use a pad.

I hope I like this game. I was never ever into RTS games and actually hated them. But I'm pretty deep with the Halo Universe, so I really really hoping this game will be enjoyable for me.

Yea will give it ago, but i still think that when it comes to halo the 1st one was best. you basically need the 1st game with the 3rd ones multiplayer. while i understand that this is an entierly different style of halo, being RTS, i just think its nothin more than a distraction so people stop asking about Halo4. Still with that said i will try it.

@25 Killzone 1 was good but Nothin that the ps3 has even comes close to xbox. (im not a 360 fan boy, i own both consoles) (my ps3 is at this moment a blue-ray player, got no games for it lol)

Still not convinced into buying this, despite enjoying the demo. Maybe I'll just play it some more. Does anybody know how (if you can) you select all the same units or select a number of units and set them as a group?

Thursday, February 05, 2009 @ 10:33:41 AM

I might download this, I'm not really an RTS fan. But, after reading the first 4 Halo books it's looks like they hit the mark on this one. I need more memory for the console though. I hope the controls aren't wonky. I'm surprised that MicroSoft closed down the studio behind this one. Hopefully, the families and parties involved get compensated properly for their efforts. And I hope it isn't a rushed game full of bugs.

does anyone else feel that the only reason this game is hyped is because it has "halo" attached to it? Just because its halo doesnt mean its gonna be any good. I'll probably never play it though, i hate RTS's

Im really looking forward to this... and no #38 its nothing to do with the Halo tag on it... - the Halo games have been largely a disappointment interms of a campaign mode... but based on the tech demo we got months ago this looks to be one of the strongest Console RTS's to date... Looks even nicer then Red Alert 3 did (although RA3 did have Gemma Atkinson... lol)

Thursday, February 05, 2009 @ 11:27:10 AM

@38

It's finally a console RTS made specifically for console from the creators of Age of Empires...what's not to love? Half the reason they always suck is because they're half assed PC ports so this is really one of the only chances RTS fans have at a good console game (so of course there's hype!).

Thursday, February 05, 2009 @ 11:46:25 AM

@ 36 - The select system works in a few ways.

The left bumper does a regional select (on screen), the right bumper does a global select (everyone) and then you can select units out of that by cycling through with the right trigger.

Is it just me or does demo take a shitload of time to download? I started to download it but it took way too long, but ill try again later. And yes #40 Gemma Atkinson is hot, thats the main reason I brought RA3 haha, looks like Jenny McCartney has some competition now! :)

I played the demo earlier and I wasn't that impressed. The cut scenes are fun to watch and the graphics are amazing, but overall the game didn't seem that fun. I'll give it another shot over the weekend. Hopefully it is better the second time around.

@ 23 actually, you can uprage your base and when you do you get extra place :) and @ 38 i have played couple of RTS and i say Halo Wars is nice and simple, of course it's easier to play with PC, but i don't play with PC anymore (maybe sometimes), so good RTS for console is thumbs up from me :)

I thought Halo Wars was crap. I think its a nice approach for the Halo series and it will be great for tactical gamers who play those games, but also love Halo.

This, for them, is the ultimate game.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
