Rumour: Crystal Dynamics Lay-Offs Uncover More Eidos Controversy

Rumour: Crystal Dynamics Lay-Offs Uncover More Eidos Controversy
Written Monday, January 12, 2009 by Dan Webb

This is the story of a struggling publisher who pin their hopes on a long standing franchise. When that franchise fails to hit the publisher's lofty limits and said publisher's share value drops 25% (although it rose 8% again this morning), people have to be held accountable ... usually the wrong ones, as is the case here.

Of course, I'm talking about the 30 lay-offs from Tomb Raider: Underworld developer Crystal Dynamics and usually when the wrong heads roll, you get disgruntled ex-employees sounding off, which is clearly the case here.

There are numerous threads over at the Tomb Raider Forums from disgruntled ex-employees, one of those is supposedly even ex-Tomb Raider Creative Director, Eric Lindstrom, with some frankly shocking controversies.

Ex-employee, SacrificialLamb commented that if you "ask anyone who is part of it and if they are honest they will tell you around 40% of the DLC was meant to be in the game itself, originally. But it was decided later on to take out those parts because they were expecting most sales on the 360 and the DLC the way it looked at the time was looking to be a bit 'thin'. So we were asked to cut some parts out to be used in the DLC."

They also states the bigwigs were the real reason for their demise and stated that "Eidos and the people with high paid jobs who 'couldn't care less about this silly game' (real quote from a small unofficial meeting about Tomb Raider by one of them) are the problem and everyone knows this"

Real or not real, you make the choice here. The fact that the threads are still going and the admins of Tomb Raider Forums are getting involved, speaks volumes from my standpoint.

You've got to feel for the Crystal Dynamics ex-employees here who surely are the victims. With what is surely one of the best Tomb Raider games the franchise has ever seen, the lofty and unreasonable expectations of Eidos are placing a shadow of doubt over the title. It even looks like the time constraints they put on the team negatively affected the game as a whole in the end meaning they had to chop cheats, the ability to replay cinematics and a whole load of other stuff from the final game.

The 1.5 million sales weren't enough to keep the Eidos bigwigs happy, but what do they expect releasing a title in the hottest release period we've ever seen? I wish some people would do their maths. From a personal standpoint, I can see titles like Tomb Raider: Underworld, Mirror's Edge, Prince of Persia and Dead Space's sales increase well in to next year. The fact remains that people will always pick from the top of the tree before moving down, so your Gears of War and Call of Duty titles will nearly always come first.

"I can see titles like Tomb Raider: Underworld, Mirror's Edge, Prince of Persia and Dead Space's sales increase well in to next year."

That is exactly what I am going to do. I'm going to get Dead SPace, PoP and Tomb Raider when i'm finished with Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2

Seems like the Economy is finally starting to effect video games, with all the PS3 Lay offs and the rumor of Microsoft Xbox Related Lay offs.

@9

You don't play a game because it's popular and then say it sucks? Strange.

Tomb Raider Underworld is a decent game. I got it and Mirrors Edge on sale at Best Buy. I bought Legends and used some points to buy Anniversary off the marketplace. But I'm a little iffy buying the TRU DLC if it doesn't add achievements in light of this all.

This is pretty dumb, those guys still worked their asses off to crank this game out (and the game actually isn't bad at all other than being only a good 6-8 hours of play time to beat it). But why should they get fired? The Tomb Raider sales have never been blockbuster like COD or GOW. It's an old franchise with more of a cult following than a massive fan base...what the hell did they expect?
The Ex-Employees have every right to be pissed, they got the shit end of stick on this one...just isn't right.

Not only does he have a very strange standpoint of not liking a game simply because its popular, he is also stating this fact in discussion about something completely unrelated. One word springs to mind, but I'll let you decide on which on your own ;-)

Back on topic: this isn't good news at all. But as you have rightly said, sales should pick up during the months where there are no massive releases. Its strange how blind Directors can get about their chances of selling a product, when even the most layman of gamers, with no business experience can tell you that a release in Oct/Nov/Dec means trouble.

Not playing a game is the best way to make an educated decision as to whether it sucks or not, duh!

This situation is just further proof that as the video game industry continues to grow, more and more of the wrong people will get into the high positions. It's all about the money. Just like every other business in the world, the suits will care less and less about the product and the consumer and more about the green.

Not called Call of Duty, maybe if it was 'Call of Duty: Tomb Raider' the little kids will buy it.

I might pick it up during this year when my gaming appetite is dry.

Unfortunately layoffs are part of the economic times right now. They may just be using the sales numbers as an excuse. It certainly is a shame I enjoy the Tomb Raider Series.

Seriously if that is the best Tomb Raider game ever its a testment to how mediocre the series really is. They also made a mistake on when to release it because it was against the other big sellers, TR should have come out after all the good games were out.

Forgive me if I'm missing something here, but why wouldn't Eidos care about this game? Isn't it the ONLY big franchise they have? The only other game from them recently that I know of is Puzzle Arcade. Not exactly a big game.

As for the DLC, I expect the two free costume packs already released are prime examples of stuff that was meant to be on the disc. What a waste of hard drive space.

Great. So get rid of everyone who knows what they are doing, so the bugs in the game never get fixed and the DLC, if it's not done yet, will be crappy.

They should lay off the bigwigs instead. You know, the jerks who just hang around the office all day and don't really do anything.

I don't like the Tomb Raider games and will never play them, but it does still sound upsetting that they're laying off good workers, just because the game didn't sell quite as they expected in one of the hottest game quarters ever.

I didn't even know about this game until it was already released and on the shelves. They should fire the Marketing people, as they didn't advertise this game well.

Anyhoo, this is so retarded I love tomb raider games and have played since the first when I was quite young and this game is awesome I have it on PS3 and am loving it but not completed yet as I have a few more games to play/finish first but it will be done soon. I think it was the guys fault for rushing them not only ruining the game but thinking they could compete with COD5, Gears 2, ect (BTW thats not me saying game is rubbish Im just saying everyone just wants gears and the like COZ EVERY ELSE IS!!!)
And on the case of the DLC *Insert swering filled rage here (aimed at edios not CD)*

This doesn't really make me as sad as 2 things: the 1UP Show is cancelled (those who know about it should be equally upset) and... and... get this... x360a ruined a part of Fable 2 for me! Yay!

Speaking as a programmer myself - that sucks! Tomb Raider is a very old franchise and Underworld wasnt that bad in comparison to the other attempts. To expect it to do more then a million or 2 sales is very optimistic since the other games such as Angel of Darkness have alienated a lot of fans.
That said im still annoyed that Crystal Dynamics havnt released a next installment to the Legacy of Kain saga.

I noticed over the christmas period that games were having DLC released just weeks after the full game was released. This is worrying as games are not being released as they should be with publishers looking to make a quick buck. Very annoying!

This falling economy has been invading us and even technology is affected, of course, everything is affected. Lay off is the primary alternative of most companies to make their business more profitable on this day of recession. Layoffs are occurring in other nations too. Japan, Germany, and the UK are being hard hit, and payday loans are being taken out there too. President Obama is promising investment in infrastructure and creating jobs – we hope so. The middle class should return to prominence so they don't have to take out as many payday loans.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
