Achievement History is Made: First PC-Exclusive [Update]

Achievement History is Made: First PC-Exclusive [Update]
Written Saturday, December 27, 2008 by Alan Pettit

I meant to post this yesterday, but I had to run out and meet some friends right after posting the achievements. I'm sure many people here don't know what Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II is or even that there was a first one. That is of course because it is a PC only title. The first was a very popular RTS game on the PC, and this sequel will be the first PC-exclusive game with achievements. There have of course been other PC games with achievements until now, but this will be the first to not have a 360 counterpart. This can only mean good things for fans of PC gaming. Here's hoping the newly formed Activision Blizzard, Inc. take note and Starcraft II may have some hope of getting its own list.

To read more about how to earn achievements on the PC and which games are available, check here.

Update: There is a lot of discussion on this which is awesome, but I feel I need to clarify a few things. First of all, people are suggesting things like Halo 2 and World of Warcraft. Halo 2 was indeed the first game to have achievements only in its PC version, but it was not a PC-exclusive game. It was also released on the Xbox and playable on the 360. So, I suppose its achievement list was PC-exclusive, but not the game itself which is what this article is about. And as for World of Warcraft (or any Steam game), those "achievements" do not collect points for your Gamertag and really have nothing to do with Microsoft's system in general. If you're trying to include those games, you'd even have to include something like Smash Brothers for the Wii which had all kinds of medals to unlock. But, again, those aren't the same thing.

However, it appears there has been a PC-exclusive game already. "Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu aka Legend of the Galactic Heroes" was a PC-exclusive game released exclusively in Japan. So, there you have it, for everyone trying so hard to prove me wrong, someone finally did. Good job, Sangriaz. So, we'll call this the first widely known, widely available PC-exclusive game I suppose.

#5: Achievements were created by Microsoft, they can do what they want with the system. A wider fanbase is only a good thing.

#7: Companies can allow or disallow the use of cheats in games to unlock achievements. There are tons of 360 games that allow the use of cheat codes while still giving achievements (Lego Batman, etc) and using those is not a breach of the Terms of Service. The same holds true for the PC. If the developer does not put in code to disable achievements when cheats are used, that is not the fault of the player. Just like playing games on "easy" is not wrong, neither is using cheat codes when available.

#11 - I think you'll find that's not quite what #7 meant. Do you not remember the fuss made by microsoft and developers about the fact that people were save sharing etc as a way to cheat their gamerscore and increase it significantly, very quickly, and without achieving anything. This is a problem on PC because it is so much easier to manipulate the system. Registries can be edited, files can be changed, and if Microsoft monitor the PC achievements in the same way that they monitor Xbox360 achievements, then a fair number of hefty scores will be getting reset pretty quickly I imagine.

Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 10:12:00 AM

@Alan Pettit : That brings about a question I never thought of with your Blizzard Activision remark. Blizzard has almost always released it's games for PC / Mac both, I wouldn't think you could get a "Games for Windows" header for a game thats a hybrid disk, so wouldn't that mean no achievements possible?

#11: You do understand the scope of cheating on PCs, right? We aren't talking petty cheat codes here.

Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 10:29:29 AM

@20 Dude, GFW Live games work the same as 360 games. Saves are tied to the gamertag. If your gamertag was on my pc (on Universe at War) you wouldn't be able to play any of my saves.

Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 10:31:29 AM

As if cheating is exclusive to PC gaming anyway, why cry and moan over people cheating 1000 in DoW 2 when so many people do the exact same thing on the 360 every single day for dozens of games.

Oh woe is us achie-whores who have to compete with people who haxor and get 1000 on Dawn of War 2! We honorable 360 only players NEVER cheat! Ever! What's game-saving I've never even heard of that.

This is a non-issue, if this opens the doors to more PC titles getting achievements (Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, etc) then I'm all for it, just gives me more of an reason to play games on my PC again.

I will put this another way for the retards who dont know what i mean by cheating. Its very easy to HACK a game on the pc and mess around with anything they want. Its bad news for people online and people who like to get achievemennts in general.

What will be next games on your cell phones with achievements? These what made the xbox stand out from the crowd.I for one am not happy about this but thats just my opinion.

Just dont think cheating ends at up,down, left, left, right,a.Ow great ive unlocked a extra health pack!

Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 10:50:31 AM

The Killer- that's a good statement, but note that it can still be played on an Xbox 360. For this reason, it was built as a port to the PC, so it doesn't count. Dawn of War II is the first game BUILT FOR the PC that can support achievements, so it is first.

Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 11:11:08 AM

halo 2 is pc exclusive and has achievements??

if your guna say you can play halo 2 on your xbox360, you still wont get achievements!!!!

alot of other people have brought this up already. lol

Comment #28 by The Pants Party
Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 11:14:49 AM

#15 (and others): I suppose that works, but Halo 2 was technically a dual-platform game, just only had achievements on one of them. This is the first PC-exclusive game to have achievements.

#17 (and others): The act of "gamesaving" is now extinct and impossible. There are newer ways of cheating to unlock achievements, but trading saved games is not possible anymore. Still shouldn't be possible on the PC, but we'll see.

#18: Didn't even think of that... damn!

Comment #29 by The Pants Party
Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 11:21:33 AM

#24: I suppose I am the "retard" you're referring to, and I see what you're saying (misunderstood at first). There is a way to cheat already to edit files for Halo 2 and get all the single player done without actually playing it. I'm sure people will find other ways to cheat things. I hope Microsoft does look out for that and act against it, but enough people cheat on the 360 as it is that they have not acted on, so who knows.

@Pants : Unless the merger changed how Blizzard operates, which is possible since Activision Blizzard now acts more like EA than EA does =P I was surprised to hear that they were still bring out any of the Diablo/Starcraft/etc due to the CEO stating the reason all the Vivendi titles that were dropped were dropped due to it not being feasible to bring out a sequel on a yearly basis... maybe we'll see at least yearly expansions in that case.

Comment #36 by The Pants Party
Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 12:05:07 PM

#32: Was Halo 2 a PC-exclusive game? No. My point here is that this is the first PC-exclusive game with achievements and that holds true no matter how you try to argue it.

#33: I actually hope we don't get expansions. Brood Wars was awful, in my opinion. I am a little bit worried about Blizzard's future though. They have been one of the best companies around for a long time, and Activision has, well, not been so good. Hopefully the two parts of the comapny can exist without Blizzard being pushed under the rug and bullied. They have been notable for delays, but their end products are always worth the wait.

Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 12:15:06 PM

For Pants Party about comment #35. I think Blizzard will be allowed to be autonomous and allowed to do what they wish. Activision mainly wanted the extra cash flow that World of Warcraft brings, along with the great games Blizzard is usually known for. Oh, and I think if Blizzard wanted achievements in a hybrid game, Microsoft would probably allow it because of who they are, but its hard to say if Mac owners would be able to get access to their gamertag or if they'll just have to settle for in game achievements without a score.

Also, this may not stay PC exclusive long. Relic has said they've wanted to bring their games to consoles, most notable 360 and this may be there way of showing they are leaning further into it. I'm sure they just want to get the PC version out first and then giv

Saturday, December 27, 2008 @ 02:24:17 PM

@#45 - Uh... that's not the point. Halo 2 is a port of a original Xbox game. The initial game was not designed to be a PC game first where and, because of this, is not a PC-Exclusive. Yeah, Halo 2 got Achievements but you can still play it on another system. Dawn of War 2, however, is only on the PC with no sign of an announcement of it going multi-platform.

People always claim it's easy as hell to hack into the PC games. BULL EFFING CRAP! "Change Registry" GFW Live has checks and balances in its system. It will prevent most if not all issues with registry or file problems. If anyone can modify a file on the local machine to edit the game, that's an oversight that the developers should patch, or they aren't good devs. Simple as that. Any smart company wouldn't allow this. Anyone remember CoD4 hacks? They did away with that on CoD5 because it now has a local file AND a server file on Activision's servers. Same with America's Army for the PC. So if you change one, it won't work. And any good developer will continue to use systems like that.

To the people complaining that other PC games have achievements and are not on the 360, such as WoW, Spore, etc etc... Those are not Microsoft Games for Windows LIVE/Xbox LIVE achievements, these are.

Halo 2s system had to have you logged into LIVE to earn the achivments. If you played the campain offline it would make you reset where you were if you wanted achivements. Or at least it does now, I remember Youtube videos of ways to replace some files to get all mission achivements but those don't work anymore. I am guessing it will use the same system to stop most cheating from happening, but then again I have only played Halo 2 for PC and nothing else so I could be blowing smoke...

I guess I dont see the advantage of achievements on a PC. Personally I stopped PC gaming in favor of consoles as I know the game will work and for the most part the games are less buggy.

Then again they may be tossing them in right now so they are ready to port it down the road. THey may claim its Windows only but there were plenty of Xbox only also till they ported.

Didn't Warhammer Online, WotLK and perhaps some more games already infuse achievements?

I am open to the idea of achievements on a PC game. There are certain games I would enjoy more on the PC. FPS and RTS are good examples of types of games I would enjoy more on a computer. Mainly because mouse and keyboard are > two d-sticks. Some would say get better, I'm workin on it, 1k on WaW

Dawn of War is pretty sweet. Although not a big fan of RTS achievements it should be alright cause I'll be putting triple digit hours into this game for sure.

yay!!! I'm going to buy this game just cause it's a pc exclusive w/ achievements.(i know it's a dumb reason but w/e) never even played it b4. I downloaded the mp beta and got pwned but it's all good. I've got halo 2 also but i don't play cause it's outdated (graphics). I rather turn on my xbox and play halo 3. Wish crysis had achievements!!!!! that would be delicious!!!

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
