EA Announces Dante's Inferno

EA Announces Dante's Inferno
Written Monday, December 15, 2008 by Dan Webb

At Spike TV's VGAs yesterday, EA finally unveiled Dante's Inferno, a third-person action adventure adaptation of the medieval epic poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. The dark fiction gave birth to the Tuscan Italian dialect and is widely considered to have defined the western world’s contemporary conception of hell and purgatory. The poem tells the tale of Dante who journeys through the twisted, menacing nine circles of hell in pursuit of his beloved Beatrice.

The poem delivers a striking and allegorical vision of the Christian afterlife and the punishments of hell. In part one, known as Dante’s Inferno, Dante traverses all nine circles of hell; limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery.

“The time is right for the world of interactive entertainment to adapt this literary masterpiece, and to re-introduce Dante to an audience that, until now, may have been unfamiliar with the remarkable details of this great work of art,” said Jonathan Knight, executive producer for Dante’s Inferno. “It’s the perfect opportunity to fuse great gameplay with great story.”

The title is being developed by EA's Redwood Shores, the studio behind Dead Space, so we can only hope that they create a title of the same caliber. Take a look at the announcement trailer from last night's awards.

^^ wow, way to claim #1. lmao.

I love the Divine Comedy, and the image of Dante ramming crucifixes into decrepid minions eyes just may be the coolest thing i've ever seen XD

nice idea with the divine comedy though my faith in EA is pretty low at the moment, lets see what happens. I'm open minded

Agreed with #3. The idea is amazing, but lets hope EA doesn't ruin it.

Nice to see EA attempting to make some worth while games as of late.
I have never liked EA but Mirrors Edge is a unique idea which im sure will influence more (better) games like it.
And Dead Space could have been a lot worse.

Made by the same team as dead space? I'm sold already, those people know how to make incredible games.

@Zenquen: I'd say it's the latter. It ranks right up there with that game where you play as War of the four horsemen of the apocalypse (I forget the title) as being an EXTREMELY disturbing and bad idea...

Interesting indeed.

I hope they don't stray too far from the writing, it is by far one of my favorite works of literature.

Yes, I do love hating EA. After all the money spent on games of theirs that don't even work, I think it's only fair everyone else knows of the shabby work being put out.

Yes, Dead Space was good, and hopefully they'll follow suite with this and the upcoming LoTR game. It would be a shame to see another horrible venture through Middle Earth or Hell.

Go read "Dante's Inferno" before you play it. You'll get a much deeper introspective on what this game is about. It sounds great, but doesn't look as well. Maybe their ideas culminated well on paper, but haven't been translated into the game all that proficient. I hope it turns out to be great because it's an excellent story.

I read (most) of Dante's Inferno, and this appears to be a complete insult of the Christian Faith while looking completely stupid. Don't call me that guy, but this game will have to pull a full miracle out of its ass to make me like it. At least Doom 3 didn't have zombies being stabbed with crosses. It's just another reason to hate EA (sorry left 4 dead), and EA just made the fifth round of the ninth circle by being in it. Have fun rotting and distorting in the ice, John Riccitiello.

dante's inferno is one of my favorite stories. reading the book itself puts dark images into ones head. if ea can translate this feeling at all into a video game then it should be good.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
