EA Picks Up Brutal Legend

Quick gaming history lesson here for those unaware of the backdrop to Brutal Legend. Brutal Legend is the latest outing from Double Fine who were behined the critically acclaimed Psychonauts; a game that proved that high review scores doesn't necessarily sell games (Metacritic average of 88 and yet only sold around 100,000 copies).

Their latest outing, Brutal Legend, was one of the victims of the Activision Blizzard merger. Where Atari stepped in to save the day with the Ghostbusters title, EA have done the same with Tim Schafer's latest trip in to the unknown.

Brutal Legend is a third person action/adventure game starring Jack Black in the role of roadie Eddie Riggs, who sets on an epic quest to build an army of rockers with only a broad axe, a big block V8 and his faithful guitar in hand.

“This is awesome news!” stated Tim Schafer, President of Double Fine Productions. “The quality and creativity of the games EA Partners has been involved with make it a perfect home for our baby, Brütal Legend. Some people were starting to wonder if the saga of Eddie Riggs would ever see the light of day, but now I think it’s clear that this game, like Metal itself, cannot be killed!”

Brütal Legend tells the tale of Eddie Riggs, played by Jack Black, who is drawn back through time to a mythical world immersed in Rock and Roll folklore; where great Metal titans once ruled and power chords rang from the countryside for all to hear. When an oppressed people request Eddie’s knowledge of modern warfare, he pulls from his own experience in the only occupation he’s ever had, a roadie for a Heavy Metal band. From this springs the most hellacious army man has ever seen, and thus brings this ancient world into the Age of Metal.

Brutal Legend is set to touch down in autumn 2009 and will be shown at Spike TV's VGAs this Sunday.

That is awesome, I am so happy for Schafer and everyone at Double Fine. Psychonauts was an amazing game and I have high hopes for Brütal Legend.

Good news, Brutal Legend now has a publisher again, I saw this game and was thinking how awesome it would be. Jack Black truly did his best in Kung Fu Panda, both the movie and the game, and I can't wait to play this.

Bad news... EA picked it up. *groan*

@ #9

I have been saying it for months, EA have given us awesome games over the last year, all these EA bashers hating just because they think it's cool, Good Lord.

You didn't even mention Mirrors Edge, Battlefield: BC etc either!

To critise EA after 2008 makes you look dumb.

As for Brutal Legend, this is the best news I have heard for a while, I was gutted when all the other titles got picked up and that remained in limbo. It's going to be sweet, Shafer is a genius.

Can't wait!

yeah EA gets a lot of unfair cristiscm eventhough they did ruin the Need for Speed series but apart from that everything else is unfair

but the most important thing is that they make good games and this could be a classic if it is made properly and i believe EA is the right publisher for this

To be honest i've never heard of this game, but it certainly sounds interesting.

As for the EA bashing, it's just plain silly.

EA = FIFA...awesomeness

All you EA haters are douches. They have been apart of soo many awesome games this year and they are taking chances with games when they dont really need to (mirrors edge for one). They have breathed new life into the skateing genre with skate after the extremely poor THPG. I bet that anyone on here who is moaning about EA has picked up at least one EA title this year, so why complain? If you get enjoyment out of the game, does it really matter if EA are behind it or not?

EA may have made a "few" good games this year but it doesn't matter, if they eliminate all the competition they aren't required to make a better standard of game or to even go back to fix problems with some of their recent or old games

Re: EA Haters.

I'll hold my hand up, I was one of them. Then the likes of The Godfather (not a bad sandbox game to be fair), Skate (redefined skating games), FIFA 08/09 (overtaken Pro Evolution by a long shot, and I WAS a Pro Evo mark).

3 games sums up the difference in EA who now do seem to be increasing the quality of games rather than just simply "updating" them for the sequels etc.

Dead Space looked awesome, I just wasn't feeling the 3rd Person view, but story & gameplay weren't bad at all. Burnout, never played! NFS, downhill since MW, though ProStreet was a good game it should never have had the NFS tag on it, would have been represented better as a stand alone racer. Battlefield, meh, the game just felt too rigid compared to the fluid gameplay of COD, it's similar to Rainbo

Ok for one EA doesn't develop them their just the cash money behind it all. You have to look at the development team. I.E. Activison holds the money for the Call of Duty franchise, but Treyarch and Infinity Ward made them. Brutal Legend is being developed by Sierra Ent. and Double Fine. Dead Space was done by EA Redshores, Mirror's Edge was done by DICE. The only ones you could put the actual name of EA on development are the sports games. And they usually don't mess those up. So EA is not screwing up your games it's the shotty developers like Treyarch making bad games.

Now look here, I LOVED EA way back in the day, they were a very good company. I love some of the games they manage to pick up. EA themselves, their programmers work their ASSES off. The problem I have with EA is their SUITS who THINK they know about the whole programming side and push these games out the door way before they are ready. Mercs 2 was one of these casualties.

To reiterate: I LOVE EA, I HATE their SUITS in office!
