Some Launch Sales Stats Just In

Some Launch Sales Stats Just In
Written Thursday, November 13, 2008 by Dan Webb

Rather than bore you with two separate news posts on very similar subjects, I thought I'd lump them all in to this one for ease.

It seems that the global economic crisis doesn't really affect the games industry ... It does, but not as far as sales goes for the blockbuster titles. Today, Microsoft and Ubisoft released some up-to-date stats for both Gears of War 2 and Far Cry 2 and it seems that everything is going swimmingly.

Gears of War 2 [which I'm still yet to stick in my console] sold an impressive 2 million units over its launch weekend, both online and midnight madness inclusive. More than 1.5 million people logged in to the game over the weekend [not me again] and clocked up a staggering 15 million hours. Even more impressive is that those 1.5 million people unlocked more than 19 million achievements. Now they're some serious stats!

Far Cry on the other hand, which is not as mainstream as Gears of War, also saw some impressive sales, amassing a whopping 1 million sales in 3 weeks since its launch. Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at Ubisoft commented "The holiday quarter is off to a solid start with the successful launch of Far Cry 2 ... The game is well on track to achieve our expectations for the year."

So good sales figures for good games. In other news; check back later for our Gears of War 2 review and next week for our Far Cry 2 review.

This is good to know, except for the fact that they are both first person shooters, I guess war sells!

Both are fantastic games. Its no suprise they have sold so well.

Farcry might look to have done much worse than gears on the face of things, but when you factor in the mainstreamness of gears and the costs of both games to the developers, farcry is doing great to have gotten those kind of sales in todays economic climate.

Have played gears from day one in sp and horde but think I'll be waiting for a patch before getting stuck into multiplayer.

Yeah - some work really needs to be done on GoW2 multiplayer - it was taking upwards of 20 mins to match teams & then half the players would DC when loading the map...

It was very frustrating.

@ 10

I agree, What I hate about gears is when you search for a game it takes so long compared to the first one, because it has to find you teammates and then other people with 'similar' skills, man I dont give a shit if they are higher rank, I'll still take them on if they remove that finding a game would be so much smoother.

I enjoy gow just the way it is other than the time it takes for matchmaking.

and that midnight madness was a painfull day/night

Far Cry 2 is a title I really want to get to after I wrap up all these games I recently got, it got very good reviews, especially when compared to that dogshit far cry instincts.

Amazed that Far Cry 2 sold that well. It's fun as hell, but also boring as hell.

I have yet to play Far Cry 2 yet, but Gears 2 is pretty good. That is insane on the achievement unlocking though!

@3 -- I fail to see how Epic can make a One Hit kill weapon weaker. Makes no sense. Make it so it just cuts them a little? :S

@17: Exactly what I was thinking. How can you make a chainsaw "less" powerful? It either 'saws' you, or it doesnt. Some people just cant handle the fact that Gears has become more tactical now, kinda like Vegas. Well done to Epic for making such a brilliant online game, it can be made even better with a few minor tweaks though.

@3...

How do you make the chainsaw "less powerful"? It's one rev and your dead anyway, unless your talking about the lancer..

I am in love with the Gears of war 2 achievements. They offer you half just doing the campaign and everything else requires only a little work except for "Party like its 1999 and Seriously 2.0". I have gotten 600 of the achievement points in 3 days.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
