SEGA Announce the SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection

SEGA Announce the SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection
Written Thursday, November 06, 2008 by Dan Webb

Believe it or not, back in the 1990's SEGA were a major player in the console market, leading the way with its SEGA Mega Drive and boy did it have some awesome titles; Sonic, Columns, Streets of Rage, Shinobi and many, many more.

Right, enough reminiscing because as of early 2009, reminiscing will be a thing of the past because today SEGA have announced the "SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection".

This package will feature 40 of SEGA's greatest first party titles from its 16-bit Mega Drive years and even better; it'll feature some 8-bit classics from its Master System era to sweeten the deal.

“SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is a must-have for any SEGA enthusiast,” commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director for SEGA Europe. “Fans will get a chance to relive fond memories from these classic games in HD format.”

Developers Backbone Entertainment have said to include some classics and according to the SEGA site, the list is as follows:

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Altered Beast
Beyond Oasis
Bonanza Bros.
Columns
Comix Zone
Decap Attack starring Chuck D. Head
Dr. Robotnik's MBM
Dynamite Headdy
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco II: The Tides of Time
E-SWAT
Fatal Labyrinth
Flicky
Gain Ground
Golden Axe I
Golden Axe II
Golden Axe III
Kid Chameleon
Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Ristar
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force
Shining Force 2
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic and Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 3
Super Thunder Blade
Vectorman
Vectorman 2

Of course, there are a few of these on the arcades already, but bear in mind that these games have been "reproduced with the utmost detail and accuracy to commend their originals" as well as being able to output the titles in 720p with higher resolution graphics.

I'm usually pretty cynical about companies cashing in on the whole nostalgia thing, but old skool Mega Drive? You had me at hello, now where do I send the cash?

The SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is scheduled for release in early 2009  on both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

why didn't they just release a whole heap of these over xbox live? Especially those games which already are part of a series (streets of rage, sonic, golden axe)? With these being on the collection, no one will buy the arcade versions in the future. And with these now re-released on a collection disc, it's annoying for those who have already paid for the xbla games.

If they did an ultimate edition, they should have redrawn the games in high-res like they are doing with street fighter 2. Now that WOULD be awesome!

YES!!! SHINING FORCE 2!!!

For Phantasy Star and Shining force, this game is worth it. Now I won't have to use my emulator! :-)

It'll be really interesting to see what they do for the Achievements list. There's no way they treat each game as an arcade title with 200 GS is there?

sorry about double post, but they may do what the namco done with namco museum and just let u get points on the already released xbla games and the rest u get nothing. totals at 1000-1200G(not 100% sure) with just the arcade games alone.

Holy Fuck. Doctor Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. I remember getting grounded as a kid because I "forgot" to take that game back to the rental store on time. Good times.

This will be absolutely immense, retro goodness, and achievements. Hail Sega.

Thursday, November 06, 2008 @ 10:58:29 AM

This game has been in Gamestop's preorder list as "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" for over a month, but I didn't know what was on it. Is that really the full game list, though? I don't THINK any of the listed games are on Master System, and if there are supposed to be Master System games on the collection, they should really put Phantasy Star ONE on there. Looking at that list, it looks like the best stuff from the Sonic Mega Collection and the Sega Genesis Collection, plus a few great games like Beyond Oasis and the Shining series.

Gamestop lists this game at $30 to release in February, so it's an amazing deal AND not too far off!

Sorry for posting again, but I just checked the Sega site's list. It said that there will be unlockable games, which will be revealed soon. So this ISN'T the full list, and there'll be EVEN MORE on the way!

Decap Attack starring Chuck D Head

Sold!

I have a few of these on my Megadrive already, but damn that is one nice compilation. No Gunstar Heroes though, for shame! Or Revenge of Shinobi!

I digress though, seems churlish to quibble when there is so much goodness on offer. Bring on the nostalgia!

Thursday, November 06, 2008 @ 11:55:31 AM

I remember those good old days! I can see SEGA releasing most or all of them eventually on XBLA. It would be silly not to - I'd get this, but there may be people who only want one or two of the games and aren't willing pay for them all. Nice to see this, though.

I still want Capcom to release Powerstone on XBLA, though. I'd give my own knees for it!

Thursday, November 06, 2008 @ 12:14:08 PM

Yes! Ristar, the most underrated game for the Genesis! No one played it on the Genesis because it came out so late in the console generation, and no one played it on the Sonic Mega Collection because it was so annoying to unlock. :(

I'd wanted an XBLA release, but this works I guess.

this is the only way to have the achievements:

I already have the Sega Megadrive Collection on the PS2, BUT this is the Ultimate collection. I'll be buying this just for Gain Ground.
.
What about the achievements? If there's 40 games, that's only 25 points per game, they could have 5 achievements per game at 5G each... 200 achievements. That won't happen, but the way Halo 3 is going who knows how the ach system works anymore... ESSAY

Comment #102 by Rusty Nail zh
Friday, November 07, 2008 @ 04:56:48 AM

...oh yes. About the achievements. There are 40 old school games. Well, I think you will get a achievement, if you finish a game. And only then. If you got 40 games, there is no place for little silly achievements.

Friday, November 07, 2008 @ 05:30:43 AM

I notice both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are listed there. I wonder if Sega will include the lock-on feature as an unlockable extra, as they have done in previous compilations featuring the two games.

Hopefully it will be possible to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles, otherwise I think I'll pass on this, even if it has got Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Streets of Rage 3 and Decap Attack.

hehehe...like every game has 200 points. Like a XBLA game. :) = 200 x 40 --> 8000 points for 1 game! :D That would be nice! :)

Oh..and for the mega CD...I have one more for "the best of..." ---> SNATCHER!

i only hope it has improved graphics, because i hardly like any of the 3D sonic games (i do like sonic 3D for the megadrive/genesis but that was it.) so sonic 1-3, sonic and knuckles and sonic spinball is the, so hopefully you can have knuckles in sonic 2 again.
a few games i would like to see on there would be toejam & earl, robocop vs. the terminater and lemmings.

Poll

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
