Portal: Still Alive Requires Hard Drive

Portal: Still Alive Requires Hard Drive
Written Wednesday, October 22, 2008 by Dan Webb

Today's arcade title, Portal: Still Alive is the first arcade game to scale the dizzy heights of 629 Mbs. With that, it becomes the first Xbox Live Arcade game that actually requires the hard drive to play because the biggest memory card on the market at the moment is 512 Mb.

It kind of rubs dirt in the 350 Mb Live Arcade limit that Marc Whitten announced a while back doesn't it? Will this spur a new memory card release by Microsoft? Is this the first of many arcade games jumping the 512Mb mark?

In order to find out the answers to these and more, tune in to the Microsoft Xbox Live Arcade drama, each and every day.

its not even worth the 1200 points
iv been looking forward to it for ages
but its just the same portal frmo the orange box
its just got 12 or so extra challenge maps
they took about 20 minutes to get through]

you can get the orange box for pretty much the same price now off certain sites

629 MB? I mean, damn, I've got a 120 GB, but that's a lot for an arcade game. And I'm waiting for a few more opinions before I decide whether to buy this or not. I already beat the first one + all advanced maps, and right now I'm thinking the token extras aren't even close to worth the $15.

They said that this is the same game with just a few more mission's. And there isn't any added story mission's. It's kinda of like getting a map pack without the story added on. We will have to wait for portal 2 for that.

The 15 added maps are amazing, very difficult and a must for Portal fans seeking more challenge than the main game produced
And if you have never played Portal, get this as it has the whole main game with it

Don't you need a HDD for XBL anyway... lol

You can have a memory card for LIVE, it's how they made the Arcade 360 pack. The 5 games that come with the system are on the memory card, and you can use that to connect to the service.

@Comment #5: I thought the game in the Orange Box was already too hard (not the story part, but those danged impossible Challenges!).

@Comment #6: Not for Live Silver, I believe, which is all you'd need to download a game.

Honestly, this would be more of a shock if Microsoft hadn't recently broken its own rules with all those new Achievements for Halo 3. And you'd have to be kinda crazy to have a memory card and no hard drive, as the current prices (at Gamestop, anyway) are $50 for a half-gig memory card, or $80 for a 20gig hard drive. Granted, these are both new prices, while a new 20gig hard drive is near impossible to find (they don't make them anymore, after all). If you're buying an Xbox360 intending to go online at all, it makes no sense to buy an Arcade anyway (it's missi

1200MSP is a RIPOFF! Ill stick with the Portal on Orange Box, wasnt even that good of a game anyway

@ Comment #7: Actually, the five games come on a disc in the box. I used to have the same misconception, but it turns out the memory card is just for save files. Really, there'd be no room left for saves if there were five games on the thing!

@ Comment #9: True, but the Arcade wasn't designed for people who intended to go online (missing components that were cut off my previous post). You can't sell an Arcade to someone who plans to go online (from the perspective of a Gamestop employee).

Hmm... I didn't know about the disk. Ah well. Still wouldn't buy the Arcade edition anyway, I got the elite for all the extras, and understood the price, I didn't go for the cheapest solution just because I wanted the entry level 'we are competing with the Wii' part.

Still don't want a Wii, most of the games on that are shovel-ware.

I enjoyed it, despite the length.

Its a sad fact that as games get more technically better they are going to be bigger in file size not rocket science is it, anyone who wants to go online really should purchase a console with a HDD anyway the arcade was aimed at the more casual on off gamer who was not interested in online gaming a competitor for the Wii in essence. When you can get a 60GB HDD model now for £160 ($200) there is no excuse for moaning about not having access to all the features if you buy an arcade unit.

Is this the same as the Orange Box Portal. Because if it is it wasn't that good. About 20 min to beat it tops. Besides GOW2 and Fallout 3 are coming soon!!!

Definetley worth the 1200 MS points! especially if you have never played Portal before and dont want Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 along with it.

And if you want a kick ass puzzle/shooter with a creepy homicidal cyborg promising you cake XD

the cake is a lie
the cake is a lie
the cake is a lie
the cake is a lie

Not worth 1200mp or 629mb of hdd.
If you bought this game you are just acknowledging that your cattle and Microsoft just milked you.

I was getting it if it was only 800, but considering I own the Orange Box, and I just got Far Cry 2 today, I'll not be getting it.

I would say get orange box over this, you get 5 great games.

i wished they released the extras seperate as i don't wanna pay 1200 for something i have most of.

If this takes up that much space maybe we can see the original Rainbow Six and both System Shock games come to the arcade.

this is only good news i think.

it might mean that if more start to come out then they will drop the arcade SKEW, and sell just the xbox so that people can buy it if theres breaks and they want the same hard drive, but itll be cheaper and all the prices can come down as theyre only manufacturing 2 SKEWS.

#26, although I love the game and am not about to buy it because I already have TOB, this is not a valve fan site so anyone who wants to talk shit about it is very welcome too. Sometimes people need others opinions to make a purchase. Consumer ratings are part of this site. By your logic if you are on this site and you buy a game you should give it a 100% rating or not one at all...causing it to have a 100% rating.

Anyway, love portal but the prices for games on arcade are getting old. 800 or less or I am not buying.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
