Xbox Live's successful Games with Gold program (who'd have thought free games would ever be successful?!) is set to continue on Xbox One, Major Nelson has announced on Twitter. We'll have to wait until 2014 for details though.

"Great news: Access to free games each month is coming for Xbox Live Gold members on – Details coming later in 2014," the Major writes.

Presently, A World of Keflings is available for free with Games with Gold on Xbox 360 until November 16th. From then on, Iron Brigade will be available to download for free until November 30th. We can only imagine what free next-gen games await on Xbox One.

  • Sweet nice to see them doing good thing like this
  • Oh fuck yes. Way to do things right MS.
  • Interesting. Look foward to seeing what we get.
  • Does this mean that Games with Gold will also run simultaneously on Xbox 360 as well as Xbox One - a game for each console?
  • I'll bet my socks that Killer Instinct with all characters unlocked will be the first one. :P
  • Well the details arent been released until later in 2014, and it probably won't launch as soon as it's revealed, so I'm guessing it'll start about this time next year. Free is always good though, unless it's a turd of course.
  • First free retail game on Xbox One.....Ryse: Son of Rome.
  • "Details coming later in 2014" means Q4 2014?
  • Im sure people will find a reason to complain about this program too.
  • super cool keep the Xbox 360 get free games on that and on the Xbox 1
  • @9 that's what I was thinking but I'm fine with that.
  • even if they don't start giving them out till end of 2014 means we're getting games at most a year old unlike atm where they're like 6
  • Very curious has to what the games will be since the free games on 360 were years old. Although I doubt anyone could have predicted Fifa 14 or Forza 5 been given free so who knows.
  • Hell yeah this is good to hear. I'm always down for a free game.
  • First free games: Nov 2014 - Smurfs 3: Smurfed Again / My Horse & Me 3
  • @16 Why would you expect anything free from a business? Mcdonalds start giving out free burgers tomorrow would you say no because they started selling burgers 50 years ago? free is free and yet you still complain..ITS FREE.
  • fab news.
  • I'm more looking forward to this then the 360 counterpart. It should offer a lot newer titles since there is no backwards compatibility.
  • For all the hate that x360a gets about its Xbox One news stories Let's just be thankful that we can still comment... without Google+ and to make this comment partially relevant again yay for free games
  • Considering the only XB1 Arcade games are Powerstar Golf and Loco Cycle, I'm guessing we'll get one or both of those?
  • @25 you can claim games on the website, as long as you tell it to purchase there shouldn't be an issue. Assassin's Creed 2, Crackdown, Dead Rising 2, Halo 3...all great games, just because they're older and you've played them already doesn't lessen their quality.
  • I'm honestly hoping for arcade games. I'm going to be buying all the retail games that I want.
  • @10 actually we are getting really good games. just so old that anyone and everyone who cared already had them. The rest just played them cause it was free
  • they'll probably give us games like tetris or peggle every month.
  • Great news. Also good to see no dipstick has mentioned how Playstation Plus compares to this. Hopefully it stays that way.
  • I hope its not there crappy games that didnt sell to have a reason give away! I want GOOD decent games and not tooo outdated as well!
  • @9 that's the only game I've preordered !!
  • That didn't take as long as I thought....it's not even out and people are complaining. Ungrateful little children.
  • I think it's great news. Really glad I decided to get the X1. Already got 2 free games and it isn't even out yet (FIFA 14 & killer instinct). Now they will carry on games with gold !!!
  • I hear this is going to start with some of the indie games coming around February from the rumours so maybe a brand new game will be free for 2 weeks
  • Wait. He says "access for free games.." That Implies that it's not going to be a downloadable version... It's gonna be free, but maybe it'll turn into a demo or something at the end of the month... Sounds weird to me.
  • @27 They've set it up before where you could only get stuff on the console and not online. Hopefully you're right though otherwise I won't see these for at least a year.
  • I wonder if the games with gold will continue on the 360 even after it has started on the One, i wouldn't mind 4 games a month.
  • @30 Im hoping we get peggle 2 for free. Peggle is awesome.
  • Congrats to every1 getting a free game with xbone. Here in the states, we don't get a free game with our xbone purchase.
  • Well #12, I dislike digital games but i know if i don't like it i don't have to get it. @5 It will be 1 game not 2. I like to be more positive but knowing microsoft it will be 1 shitty arcade game not a decent retail game like I hear PSN offer regularly
  • @#43 To bad you don't keep those games on PSN
  • Why do people keep bringing up PS+? I mean, who cares? I PS+ is better, go there. I personally don't have a PlayStation product and likely never will. So, obviously Games with Gold is the best of the best to me, and should be to anyone else with only the Xbox 360/One. Stop comparing your experience to everyone else and just enjoy what you DO have. @28: There are no "arcade" games next-gen.
  • So free games? On xbone? Does this mean a possible backwards compatibility in the future?
  • @45 You're paying to much for Gold. Amazon.com routinely has 12 months of Gold on sale for around $45.
  • @45. Stop trying, theres way too many xbots here to admit ps+ has better value. I have Gold and PS+, and it takes a really fanboy to to say PSplus doesn't have better free games. And comments like 44 are just out of comebacks. You would be an idiot to not have a ps3(or 4) without plus. You never lose the game, if you don't drop the subscription. And if you drop the subscription your probably not playing as many games, let alone your older free games. I'm very happy Microsoft is doing anything like this. Free is free, so who cares. If you don't like the game, don't play it. I just hope Microsoft has a similar response to Sonys multiple free games on their launch. And the amazon buy 2 games get 1 free, that is a steal that no one can deny.
  • People will still bitch about it like they do now. It also says the program will continue, it says nowhere that it will still be 2 games a month. I don't anticipate it will remain 2 games a month next-gen.
  • @49 A paragraph on an OPINION? You two have way too much free time
  • @49 I don't know where the idea that you loose the game came from. I've let my membership lapse before and I kept the game, it was simply locked till I started paying again. It will always exist either on your HdD or your download history. For games with gold, I don't feel like its worth getting gold for, but nice for people who already have it. It will probably get better with time, it's a relatively new service. Ps+ originally only gave ps one games and discounts, and sometimes an indie. It wasn't till IGC that it became what it is now, and that actually started with the hack. People were pretty damn happy to get lbp and infamous as an apology and they realized they will make more than they spend if they keep us happy, go figure a business figuring that out lol.
  • sweet
  • Very interested as to what will be the early games. Will the have developed some arcade (or Xbone equivalent) games especially for this in advance? Maybe give the core away but have DLC so it should still make some money for them. Either way, no complaints from me. I hope I can somehow add them to my download queue on the website and if I buy an Xbone get a whole bunch of games for free.
  • This news story is actually quite misleading. Major Nelson said nothing about the Games With Gold program; in fact, his wording seemed to kind of avoid that purposely.
  • MS I knocking this out of the park. Glad I made my pre-order early when the One seemed like more of a risk (although I always wanted an all-in-1 media box).
  • @55, after reading your comment, I re-read Major Nelson's words. Maybe backward compatibility update to Xbox One will allow us to "access" the Xbox 360 games released for the Games with Gold program. He mentions that Xbox One users will get access to free games, but nothing about what kind of games it is.
  • @57 yea i have a feeling they're going to announce backward compatibility that guy who got his console earlier said there's some good news but he can't say what so maybe that:D but yea any free game is good :D
  • I know this will probably get dislikes but THIS website is for xbox360 achievements! so playstation fanboys take your ps+ and faulty ps4's somewhere freaking else.
  • "We'll have to wait until 2014 for details though." ...and probably 2016 for a free game that isn't a piece of shit. Heck, some of these 360 free games are older than dirt's grandfather.
  • @21 I would be complaining if McDonalds was giving me a 50year old burger, even if it was free. (Though you probably couldn't tell, they look exactly them same when they are years old). @31 I guess you're that first dipstick then? And OT: Although I don't really like the arcade games being released with games for gold, it's not like they are FORCING me to have their FREE game.
  • Good cheers! here's a thought.... they find a way to port 360 games to the one. I'm sure they are smart enough to do that after all isn't the backwards compatibility down mostly to the disk drive so if its a digital copy i'm sure they will find a way to do it (sorry if my ignorance on the tech stuff is wrong). that way they can give the same games with gold to 360 and 1 users. Then it will be like a new game so you can get all your cheevo's again.... which means buying the dlc's all over again. As for expecting launch games (ryse, DR3, project spark, forza) to be free in a years time (besides KI even if they give you free characters now there will be something new to buy for it soon enough)here is a reality pill take 2, 3 times a day and if your still not right in a month GET A GRIP!
  • I hate to see people complaining about this program, I mean how can you complain about FREE stuff. I always download the games, most of them are good.
  • Next gen is looking better and better no matter what console you get.
  • I think people are reading into this wrong. He says you will get "access" to free games not you will get to keep free games. It sounds to me like it might be like that other thing we don't mention, as long as you have gold you will have access to free games. Go silver, however and you will lose access.
  • that's great news for 2014 ms.
  • @61 terrible analogy. Just because a game is old doesn't mean it's a bad game, unlike you're 50year old burger from McDonalds
  • Not much to cheer about...Meanwhile PLAYSTATION PLUS users playing games like METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE, REMEMBER ME and next month GRID 2!!! Can't touch this with our lame advertising can you...
  • this is awesome news
  • @69 So they're what, 8 months old or less? Say you payed full price for all 3 then 8 or less months later everyones getting them for free. Am I the only person that would find that annoying?
  • @48 if you are paying $45 for Gold you are paying too much... I have eight total gold accounts (I have four children, each have their own Xbox plus three additional systems and all need to have Gold) no way in hell I'm paying $45 each for that... I had the Family Gold times two up until they ditched it so I was only paying $25 each... luckily I was able to renew before they ditched it and they gave an extra three months so my Gold is now good well into 2015. Outside of that I'll be stocking up on Live cards this Black Friday... also as a PSA for those like myself that have both PS3/X360 and PS4/Xbone you can get PSPlus Cards and Xbox Live Cards on BlackFriday for only $29 (I know PSPlus cards are at Gamestop, I think XBlive is at Sams Club, check the links at blackfriday.com or the front page of cheapassgamer.com).
  • SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE! IM TRYING TO ORDER AN XBOX ONE BUT I CAN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE. NOR THE PS4! I NEED SOMETHING! HELP!
  • my gf's aunt just got an awesome 6 month old Volkswagen Touareg by working parttime off of a pc. Read Full Report http://www.jobs64.com
  • They should continue free games with gold on Xbox One. They finally learned something. Look at Sony, they're giving away 2 free games day one with the PS4 and they're good games. Contrast and Resogun (which is the highest rated PS4 launch game btw). They were going to give away Drive Club until it was delayed, that's why Contrast is free. It remains to be seen just what game they'll give for free on Xbox One but hopefully they'll be some good titles.
  • I haven't picked up any of the free games, nor have I felt entitled to free stuff. With a lot of noise about getting free games, what's to stop devs from relying on the free-to-play model in the future? I hate free-to-play, because you end paying way more in micro transactions then the game is worth. Look at transformers legends. People have easily sunk 100'sof dollars into it.
  • @76 happy wars is free to play but kinda of pay to win.. Ive heard a lot of people putting hundreds of dollars in that game.
  • yay lets play halo 3 and assassins creed 2 on xbox one !! oh wait i almost forgot the amazing rainbow six vegas !!! yay !!
  • Nice one
  • Well that's interesting. As for everyone whining about 360 getting old games: Good for you that you don't like old games, mediocre Arcade titles and already played all of these. Not everyone did. And not everyone who 'cares' played them already. For example- I, for one, didn't get into Halo until more recently, and backlog was primarily what stopped me from picking up a few of these games. Most of the retail games (Dead Rising 2, Halo 3, Assassin's Creed II, Fable 3, Crackdown, etc) have been good. Sucks for you that you played them already, but I didn't. Too busy playing other games. This gave me an opportunity to pick them up without worrying so much about my huge backlog, since they were free. For those going on about PlayStation+: 1. To those defending it: If you stop paying, you can't play the games. They're still there, yes, but not being able to play them is about the same as not having them. And not paying doesn't mean you don't play a lot, it means you don't like paying constantly just to keep playing a few games you could've just got for like $10 used, paying ONCE. 2. To those saying it's worse: Regardless of the fact you lose the ability to play the games if you cancel, they're still better or more current games. You can go on and on about whatever you want, but at the end of the day, they're getting 2013 games for free. Ones that are still at least $40 in stores, while we're getting $10 and under games for free. It evens out. Both of them have glaring flaws. @#76 - The only time this is a problem is if they do something like some mobile games where you have limits and have to 'recharge' or pay to keep playing. Free-to-Play games on consoles, as of right now, are primarily games where you have a full game for free, and the microtransactions only serve to make the game go by faster. People spend money because they're impatient for completion/gamerscore or because they want better stuff and don't want to work for it. You can complete games like Happy Wars and Doritos Crash Course 2 or the Spartan or Ascend games without ever spending a cent. It's harder, and takes more time, but if you're enjoying it, it doesn't matter. If you're not, then don't play it. Nothing of value is lost. People dumping hundreds of dollars into a game is their own stupidity. They can beat the game without spending money. They're just frivolous. I mean, it's the same thing as Avatar stuff, dashboard themes and gamerpics. Nobody needs to buy any of those. There's tons of free ones available, but people have spent hundreds on meaningless props, costumes, themes and pics. For what?
  • I hope it's gonna start after the Dutch launch of the Xbox One. Wouldn't want to miss out on some free games!
  • Have fun with your free games, my friends.
