Firaxis has detailed the new human EXALT faction that will feature in XCOM: Enemy Unknown’s upcoming expansion, Enemy Within.
As explained in a Firaxis blog post, EXALT aims to capture alien tech to build up its offensive capabilities, so that when the alien threat is extinguished the group can take over Earth for themselves.
They’ll also mess with XCOM, planting secret cell operations to spread propaganda and increase panic levels across the world, steal your funding, hack your research and generally act like dicks.
You’ll be able to kick their ass in retaliation though. Running an Intel Scan will reveal the location of EXALT bases, allowing you to plant a spy who will eventually call on you to send a team down to engage in missions.
According to Firaxis’ Ananda Gupta, “Covert ops missions take one of two forms: Covert Data Recovery, in which the player must protect a tactical asset from EXALT’s attempts to hack it (a bit like King of the Hill), and Covert Extraction, which works like a VIP mission except the VIP is the soldier on covert ops duty, and must hack two EXALT comm arrays before leaving the map.
“Our level design team did an amazing job getting both of these to work on many different maps – originally I had thought we might get eight covert ops missions of only a single type, and when we ended up with ten of each, I was overjoyed.”
If you take out enough EXALT bases you’ll eventually reach their headquarters, allowing you to stop the annoying bastards once and for all. you can see the EXALT faction in action in this previously released trailer.
XCOM: Enemy Within will be launching on November 12th in North America and November 15th in Europe. Find out more in our preview here.
