Battlefield 4 Install Options Weigh in at Over 12GB on Xbox 360

Battlefield 4 will offer over 12GB in optional install options on Xbox 360, with additional content available to install on both of the game's two discs.

As was the case with Battlefield 3, BF4 will ship on two discs, one of which will house the single-player campaign, while the other accomodates the game's multiplayer. Regardless of which disc you chuck into your console first, there'll be a mandatory 2GB installation.

If you're after better performance from your copy of Battlefield 4, each disc also boasts additional content that you can install on top of the required 2GB. Here's what's what:

  • The Multiplayer Disc, or Disc 1, has an additional 6.6 GB of content
  • The Single Player Disc, or Disc 2, has 5.8 GB of installation content.

"We highly recommend performing these additional installations to make sure you have the best experience possible in Battlefield 4," EA writes in a help article on its blog.

Looks like we'd better start clearing some space...

Battlefield 4 is out for Xbox 360 on October 29th in North America and November 1st in Europe.

  • How does that work? I vaguely recall Battlefield 3 requiring 15 or so gigabytes.
  • Even more with all of the planned DLC. Well, time and technology changes. Not like I didn't see increasingly high data space on it's way. The price we pay for the most realistic gameplay. Looking forward to it.
  • @1 BF3 doesn't "require" 15GB either. It's optional, but suggested for a better experience.
  • Sorry, I meant to say BF4* ^
  • You could always buy an external hard drive, not from xbox, as they are much cheaper.
  • getting on xbox one will be better
  • @5 listen to him if your gonna buy a usb flash drive. I love microsoft but I would never by a 16gb flash drive for 30$ just because it says microsoft on it never. You can get those mostly at bestbuy on sale for 9.99$...ofcouse not microsoft branded but still works the same.
  • @5 External drives, when formatted and used for 360 data, have a maximum partition size of 16GB. That's fine if you want to install the play discs to normally, but the extra content they're talking about here is for textures etc that use their own install routine from the disc. It's almost a certainty that the content will need to be installed to the primary hdd in the console. I think the best plan will be the same as that for GTA V - install the additional content (required and optional) to the internal HDD, then pick up a reasonable (and cheap) USB Flash drive and install the discs to that to keep the noise down whilst playing as normal. If it helps, I bought this: http://www.ebuyer.com/367886-verbatim-16gb-store-n-go-v3-usb-flash-drive-grey-49172 It meets the USB speed requirements on 360, and seems to work well.
  • @8 it's actually 32gb i bought a 32gb one for the smae price (get 30gb after it's formatted for xbox) and use it to store most of the downloadable games they've given us recently
  • @9 Yep - you're right. 32GB.
  • Will the Xbox One support any external drive and not limit to the max of 32GB? I hate how I'm forced to use three 2TB drives but can only use 32GB of each on the Xbox 360. I wouldn't mind at all about space as long as we're not force to use only a certain amount per external hard drive.
  • @8 there is no mention of having to install to an external drive like we had to do with GTA5, im glad about that as it's a pain having to use the external usb drive on GTA5. if it's both discs and extras all installed to the main HDD then all the better imo.
  • @12 I would agree with you - that would be better. On the other hand, that's the best part of 30GB of space before any DLC, and if the game is loading that much content from the HDD I'd expect that it would simply be more efficient to install the play discs to an external drive anyway. You are correct though - they haven't confirmed that either way.
  • Lucky I'm gonna be upgrading to an Xbox One, only got like 4 gig left on my 360.
  • I will just delete BF3 to accomodate the MP and dlc installs. I wont be installing the campaign
  • Omg. I've got the space and all but I remember when games only took like 80 KB.
  • I was expecting this
  • Well I for one will be waiting for the X One. I really cant be bothered to clear my hard drive lol
  • Not sure what all will need to be installed on X1. I am not worried about the 360 version. I am super ready to play the game, but it's gonna wait for next gen.
  • This is getting ridiculous. With all of the updates and extra maps we're going to end up needing around 20GB or maybe more just for the one game
  • @20 you're gonna need more than 20. BF3 is at or close to 20 when you have everything installed.
  • Won't be getting it for 360 anyway Lol
  • @ #20 It's a DICE thing. They make great games but they do very sloppy work when it comes to managing files, add-ons and updates. It's always a mess with this developer. Battlefield 3 had a number of huge updates to download which were all required to play and they never fixed it up so there was just one, they just continued to slap them up in the store to the point that it actually became confusing. By the time it's said and done and all of the DLC and title updates finish, Battlefield 4 will probably use 125GB of your hard drive on next-gen consoles.
  • I'd rather install 20GB and use one disc to play it all. Hate whole disc swapping thing these days, when some games are smart and make you install one disc and play off the other. No issue with space here. 250GB and I always try to keep at least 50GB free.
  • lol I'm happy I'll be playing this on my Xbox One Day One Console. If people thought GTA V messed up their console because the Xbox 360 can barely handle these games, I say Battlefield 4 will be just as worse if not more worse to play on Xbox 360. The console its-self just can't keep up with it.
  • You know this generation is over with day one updates this huge
  • lol god next gen can't come soon enough.
  • @26, where does it say anything about day one updates? This is installing data off the disc to make the game run better.
  • This is why the next gen 500 gb hard drives will be small. 12 GB on xbox360 probably be about 20 gb on the one.
  • @1 with DLC I think I have over 25GB of Battlefield 3 on my Hard Drive
  • Since they put the game on two discs - one for SP, one for MP... it's too bad they don't separate the achievement list for the games: Battlefield 4 SP & Battlefield 4 MP. 1000gs for the single-player campaign, and maybe 500gs for the original MP content... with up to 500gs more for DLC. That way, people like me who don't care for the MP because of the achievements... could skip that disc altogether! Just a thought. I'm still ticked-off the BF2:MC servers are offline now (been that way since late 2010).
  • so does each copy of BF4 come a free HDD? shame i already preordered months ago. might be canceling anyways if Gamestop doesnt come up with a preorder special.
  • Lets be honest though it isn't going to need the 12.4 GB, no. People if they would download the game to it would more than likely only download the multi-player part cause well after most people play the story once they are more than likely never going to touch that disk again.
  • @31 You buy battlefield for the story?
  • Actually... I never bought Battlefield 3. I loved the story for "Bad Company," but I didn't like the campaign for BF2: Modern Combat (mostly, because of the way it played). I actually liked the MP better for that game! I just wish there was a choice of MP or not, and with a separate achievement list. I did play the MP beta for BF3... I didn't like it (perhaps it was just a poor beta?).
  • only thing bad about BF games too much DLing
  • Just got BF4 and I have a xbox 360 slim with just the internal hard drive it came with. I also have a external hard drive which I use to save everything. But when trying to install the content it says: “The game content only permits installing HD content on the Xbox 360 Hard Drive." I can't download it on the internal hard drive or my external hard drive. Can anyone help me out?
