Valve to Include Achievements in the 360 Team Fortress Update

Valve to Include Achievements in the 360 Team Fortress Update
Written Tuesday, September 23, 2008 by Dan Webb

In a recent interview with 1UP, Valve's Gabe Newell mentioned that the huge Team Fortress 2 update that is due for the Xbox 360 in the next few months will include achievements.

This is despite the original title having 99 achievements and The Orange Box could become the first game to break the 100 achievement mark. Newell said, when talking about charges for the pack and the inclusion of achievements that:

"One of the reasons you have to charge for the update is so that you can have more Achievements. That's one of the several ways that Microsoft pushes you. Since we're charging for the update, we can add the same set of Achievements that have been added on the PC side."

I'm not sure that it's possible to take that out of context, so have Microsoft really let the reins loose on their achievement policies? Is Newell just assuming they'll be cool with it? Only time will tell, but more Team Fortress 2 achievements can't be bad.

While I have 1000 in this game, I think I may pass on the DLC considering I have three free updates, with achievements, on my PC version.

No complaints, but they should really stomp down on their rules.

Since 1750 has just happened, I'd say 100 achievements max for 2000 GS

Doesn't everyone hate how good games take soooo long for fricking bonus achievements. I wish they came out like a month or two after. The game starts to get boring after you get the achievements becausae their is nothing left to do.

Message me if you want to. I have most of the new releases and we can play together or something.

Let's hope that after those extra 750GS points addded to Halo Microsoft will allow The Orange Box to have a similar points limit. 250/500GS for this update and another 250/500GS for future updates.

I have a good 20 something left, mainly thanks to Portal. But I enjoy playing TF2 and can't wait for some new shit. It sucks that on the PC we get it for free, while Microsoft and Sony will make us charge extra for it.

Well I'm glad I got it for the pc. I get free things for free.

@ Zee - Take a read of the whole interview at 1UP. Valve are just as unhappy about it as you but it's Microsoft policy. Really, really good interview that covers loads of topics. Link in the article.

New TF2 achievements would be bad because 1) the game is pretty boring and 2) the achievements they released for the PC were just pathetic and unneeded.

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 @ 12:34:40 AM

Oh, and another thing the achievements did was break the game since everyone went gaga playing those classes trying to get the achievements. Don't even think about adding achievements Valve!

loved the achievement progress bar.

not too keen about paying for updates tho.

they must think we r achievement whores.

im sure if they wanted they cud make it free even withut achievement points.

too many games out next few months.

Aren't some of the PC achievements impossible on the 360?

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 @ 01:30:31 AM

I've gotta say, that's a shitload of achievements.

Considering the three current class updates total up a whopping 115 achievements total, that would make the game have... 214 achievements! At this rate, considering they would be doing it 3 classes at a time and there are nine classes... if I did my math correctly, there would be an incredible amount of 444 achievements total.

Now that's if they release all 9 class updates. I'm probably not going to buy this considering I've got it for free on the PC and the 360 version blows when it comes to multiplayer hosting.

I love points as much as everyone else (57k score...) but I don't like the idea of standards going out the window with a 750 for halo and 100+ achievements in Orange Box. This creates the potential for games with 200 five point achievements, or games with too many points. Is Gears 2 going to get 1000 DLC points? I love points, but I want games to have fixed values. I don't like the presedents these exceptions create. If games have more and more points, those old 1,000s feel less significant, and you'll see score inflation where 100k scores wouldn't be as impressive as they are now. That's what I think.

Excellent game, I cannot wait for more achievements so I have a reason to drop Halo 3 and get back on TF2. Far more fun and rewarding, just a shame there are so little maps and no dedicated servers. If Valve sort these two simple problems TF2 would easily be my favorite FPS.

@ #34

Valve did have cross-platform working between the 360 and PC, but Microsoft stepped in and said "no" to that. If it weren't for Microsoft, you'd have the amazing dedicated servers us PC players have. And possibly even the custom maps! (That's a long shot though.)

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 @ 03:21:34 AM

@ Myself

I checked my sources and it seems it was Valve's fault, not Microsoft. I can understand why the game wasn't cross platform (it would have had to be a Games for Windows game, thus complicating it's integration with Valve's Steam), so it would have honestly been a huge hassle for Valve to go through.

Hell, at least they are supporting the title for 360. Good thing those of us here didn't get it for the PS3. (Though I do have a PS3...)

Due in a few months? Please, I will be busy with Gears 2, Left 4 Dead, and countless other co-op games such as Fable 2 and Resident Evil 5. Then add Street Fighter IV, Call of Duty WaW, etc. Where will the time be in a few months?

Valve raped 360 customers. GTFO. imo. kthx.

This is pretty good info, but it is not that surprising. Halo 3 broke the 1250 barrier just recently but a full 500 points, so I don't see why Valve wouldn't be able to do the same.

Only problem is, they will be for the worst game on the disc. I want more Portal Achievements. Hell, even Platinum Challenges, I've done the Gold :p.

Now I have to go buy the game again, but oh well, it's in my top 5 favourite games!

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 @ 11:16:12 AM

@ 31 i totally agree, games need to have some sort of boundries otheriwise its just going devalue the achievements from a completionists point of view

i dont want to say "yes finally 1000/1000 fully complete" then have to do another 1000 in 3 months and another in 6 months. There would be no sense of closure it would get annoying.

So wait, the achievements ARE 100% going to count towards your gamerscore? Each achievement will have a set value? Just want to be sure, since I've heard that they might not come with any gamerscore. Much like the PC achievements.

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 @ 06:51:18 PM

Unless microsoft understands that there are games better than Halo (such as Half-Life), this update with extra TF2 achievments could be bad... If Valve releases HL2: Episode 3 as DLC on the Orange Box, then microsoft prob wont let them add another 250 pts for achvmnts... That would suck. But then again Episode 3 could be its own game...

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 @ 07:52:13 PM

#57 - Episode 3 will probably be its own game. I doubt them releasing it as DLC with 250 points. They wouldnt make enough money from it to warrant it. Plus I think it would be too big as well.

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 @ 08:46:59 PM

How much will they charge for this?

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 @ 09:30:05 PM

If they give us all those medic achievements that the pc has, then the game will just turn into a total boost fest. And any game that isn't a boosting match, everyone will be medics or one of the other classes with achievements. It will completely ruin the multiplayer. Well it's not as if I play it anymore. TOB was a hard game to complete and now I'm gonna have to drop some money and do a lot of boosting if I want to keep it completed. I'd rather they not release these achievements to be honest.

Thursday, September 25, 2008 @ 12:57:16 AM

^^ Totally, the bulk of my achievements have been done on achievement servers with help from friends or other players.

I just got 1000/1000 for this game and I am more than happy to leave it that way :) no DLC for me

I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
