Confirmed: Games With Xbox 360 and Xbox One Releases = Two Achievement Lists

One of the first questions many of us had in this community with the announcement of cross-generational releases (aka the same game being released on both the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One) was "will we be able to earn achievements from both versions?"

In IGN's "Ask Microsoft Anything About Xbox One" today this has been confirmed to be the case. Speaking with Marc Whitten, Xbox One's Chief Platform Architect, IGN asked specifically "Can you earn two sets of Achievements for the same game (i.e. Playing Call of Duty Ghosts on Xbox 360 and on Xbox One)?"

"WHITTEN: Every game has its own set of achievements, so if you’re playing Call of Duty: Ghosts on Xbox 360 and on Xbox One, you can earn a separate set of Gamerscore in each game. But on the Xbox One version, you’re getting a much richer set of features, such as seeing your achievements progress on the Xbox One console, being able to unlock new achievements throughout the year, and earning real prizes inside and outside of the game. Xbox One also enables a new concept of challenges, where games will be offering special time-based opportunities to earn various goals and collect the rewards. More info on challenges can be found on Major Nelson's blog here."

So there you have it. One list as we're used to it for 360 owners and one special cloudy changy list for One owners. "Stacking" games for extra Gamerscore is not really a new thing, though I have a feeling it will be a bit more common in a few months. I've been running this thread for years to keep all the different versions of games that are available multiple times in one place (due to cut content, publisher changes from one region to the next, platform differences, etc), though the hobby has never been cheap. It will become much more accessible with these stacks however, as you will not need to import the games or an entire extra console to play them.

Will you pony up and buy the same game twice to earn double the Gamerscore? Are you even keeping your 360 once the One releases? Sound off below.

  • I'm not going to double up on the achievements...initially. Once the price comes down for the Xbox One games, I'll consider it. But I've never been one to play the same game again and again. There are too many other games out there I want to get into.
  • I guess its good for all those who love gamerscore :D
  • Ahhh, reminds me of my friend, Fruit Ninja. :)
  • I can understand getting a game on PC and on a console. It can at times be good to have both, but a game on a console and another console? I don't think it's worth it.
  • That seems like a complete waste of time and money. I'm not sure why people do that. I get that this is an achievements site, but the concept of getting a game multiple times just for double score is just idiotic to me. It's bad enough people buy games and DLC they don't even want/enjoy, but double/triple dipping just proves that people buy into stupid numbers that don't mean anything. That said, considering they are entirely different systems, I have no idea why this was even a question in anyone's head. It never crossed my mind at all since I thought it would be obvious they would be different lists.
  • On the other hand, I totally understand if you like, got a different version for free, or were in one of those fancy 'trading' groups or you just rented an alternate version, so you wouldn't be paying actual money or a lot. It'd just be a waste of time unless you loved the game. I also get having a game on multiple consoles if, say, you have friends on other consoles and want to play with ALL your friends or there are exclusives and you want everything and are frivolous/have a lot of money to throw around for stuff like that. But paying for a game multiple times on the same console or another solely for gamerscore is just ridiculous. There's no way you don't have a better use for that money than a number to show off that is completely irrelevant in the real world.
  • So let me get this straight, that means you'll be able to earn the achievements for the same game 7 times: PC, X360 USA, X360 EU, X360 Japan, X1 USA, X1 EU and X1 Japan... Overkill?
  • Stacking to boost your gamer score should not count. I dont see how boosting your GS is considered legit gamer score. Anybody can play the same game over and over and even transport their saves. One copy should be good enough, But then again just my opinion, people are free to do as they please xD lol
  • One game is fine enough for me all I really care about is the completion.
  • No way would I buy the same game twice. Yeah, i'll get achievements for games that I buy but I'm not that desperate, I have other things to do.
  • Worried about these "time-based opportunities" As someone who loves 100%ing games, missing out on a time based achievement because of whatever reason and not being able to get 100% would be really infuriating
  • @5/6: I never doubted it would happen, but the confirmation was nice. I don't really like that sentiment in your second post though. People work hard for their money and if this is what they enjoy doing and what they choose to spend their time and money on, they should have no hesitation in doing so. @7: Well, with the X1 being region free, I don't think we'll see as many regional stacks. PS3 still has quite a few even though it is a region free console though, so who knows, it may not change @8: You can't transfer your save between the versions (that is the entire reason they stack). I put 130+ hours into both versions of Tales of Vesperia. I earned that 2000G, and I deserve every point of it, and it's completely legit. @11: The time-based achievements ("challenges") are worth 0G. Every single challenge in fact is worth 0G. The only thing we don't know is if they will be on the same list as the normal achievements. I have submitted that question to IGN in the hopes that it gets answered next Monday.
  • @8 Did you ever consider that some people love to play a game more than once and thusly, being able to stack the gamerscore is an added bonus? I loved Bully, Velvet Assassin and Borderlands so it was great to be able to not only revist them on my Japanese console, but also earn the gamerscore again. In fact, this year, I've replayed more games than ever before due to the releases schedule this year being so light on titles.
  • Arkham Asylum better get an X1 port so we can complete it 6 times. :P
  • @12 I'm pretty new to the site, will there be a place I can find that information should you get a response?
  • Great, now I will hear it even more with my double GS on games. -_-
  • I sometimes play through games twice. I'd definitely wait for a sale on the second copy though.
  • Doubling up is absolutely stupid and tons of people are going to be going at it like crazy. If you don't have OCD or any other illness related to collecting, spending money and generally making the irresponsibly choices in life, you won't be doing this and if you do it'll be purely coincidental (see Divinity II or Dragon's Dogma for examples, where some people will have bought both games originally and bought both disc expansions after).
  • I actually bough GOW1 for PC because i wanted to replay it and be able to earn GS. Sadly i never was able to have it work(damn computer games) BUT would i had the chance to replay ANY GOW on another platform, i would, cause i know i could earn again every single achievement minus the ugle ones like seriously(i could had do seriously 1.0 3 times tough, as a matter of fact, i did 5 time on xbox lol, but the third game... no way) Also it could mean a lot of fun replaying a game like skyrim with a whole different character YET still earning all those achievements again on your profile... that would be a good motivation. But i get that the concept of buying 2 times the game seem extremly stupid to some people, it even do with me but i would do it(for very selected games tough) so well...
  • @15: In the IGN article I linked above, they say they will update that page every week with new questions and answers. I will make a new news post here as well if I get a response.
  • I plan on playing Assassins Creed IV: Blackflag for Xbox 360 before I get my Xbox One Day One Console, and I'm only going to do this just to see if I can notice a huge difference between the Xbox 360 version VS Xbox One version. And I cannot wait to see what it looks like on Xbox One. Even though I'm not all about graphics, when it comes to playing games, but I'm just curious to see.
  • I'll get the PS4 instead of the Xbone, so I'll keep my good old 360. So no stacking for me.
  • nice!
  • The thing that I would like to know the most is whether or not missing a challenge will affect your ability to complete a game or if missed challenges will show up uncompleted? I would hate to miss the challenge for "killing 75 bad guys on July 4th 2013" and just see it sitting there, taunting me, on my achievement/challenge list until the end of time...man that would really piss me off.
  • I'm not going to be doubling down unless the two versions are VERY different and both enjoyable but that's good news. No reason for them to share lists.
  • not buying double games but definitely will be renting
  • Sounds kinda dumb in my opinion. So pretty much If I compared destiny achievements with a friend I would have to jump back and forth between our versions.
  • Theres a line that falls between entertainment and obsession, and neither side should receive criticism for having an opinion or playing how they want to play. I personally don't double up games, nor will I unless it's a special circumstance. If you are putting the time into completion, even if it's two separate copies of the same game from different regions, suggesting it shouldn't count is kind of ridiculous. It isn't like you are putting in the Japanese version, loading your save file from the american version you already completed and its automatically unlocking 1000 GS again, the effort and time still needs to go into it. I do agree with 5's comment though because it makes me roll my eyes when I see people post "Oh no another bad DLC I must buy because there's gamerscore attached". It's beyond me why a completion percentage forces you to continue playing games you hate and spending money on something you don't want. Just skip it, it's not going to ruin your life if your percent is now 99.17 instead of 99.19. @18 if that is your legitimate gamerscore you don't have much of a voice in a conversation like this because you have experienced no grind, no effort, and no significant progress in obtaining achievements. If that's a really old and non-updated score then I apologize.
  • I go for 100% completions, not overall GS. This is cool for those who love raising their score, but for me, this is a waste of money. To each their own.
  • Buying an Xbox One game should be like buying a Blu Ray. Blu Ray cd and DVD = a Xbox One cd and Xbox 360 cd.
  • I'd only bother with games I REALLY love. Let's say, hypothetically, I end up loving Dark Souls 2 as much as the first one. Let's further assume in this hypothetical situation that sometime down the line, Namco/From announce an enhanced port for next gen consoles. In this particular case, I would buy and play the "same" game twice. Otherwise, it will only be because I end up buying an Xbone when Halo 5 comes out, and I'm suckered into one of the known cross-gen games for one reason or another (and then decide I want the next-gen version just because). This may happen with Destiny, or perhaps even Titanfall. It really just depends.
  • Keeping my 360 but not for any stacking purposes. I'm holding off on next generation for a while for a couple of reasons, mainly because of a new addition to my family.
  • Got too much of a backlog to sell my 360's, also, you hardly get anything for them so why even bother selling...
  • @29 Same with me. Don't care about overall GS, but more about the games I can 100%. If I can't get 100%, then I don't try to go for achievements at all. Also, does anyone else hate when games end up with an odd amount of GS? Like when games end up with 1625 or something stupid like that. I understand that some people will buy a game for 360 because they don't have the Xbox One, then eventually get it for Xbox One, but I do think it is pointless to buy it on both consoles simply to have more gamerscore.
  • I will not be doubling up unless they are post xbox1 launch games ie. FIFA14.
  • As rumored, once you transfer your gamertag to One, you cant go back and play games in 360. It would be fatal since there is no backward compatibility, and its probably gonna happen. So wrong questions.
  • @37 MS would be completely stupid to confirm that rumor. Especially with a couple big named 360 games coming out post XBO, like FFXIII-3 and DS2.
  • I completely agree with #5,I assumed this months ago,of course they would be 2 different lists, and I personally would never buy the same game twice just for the Gamerscore, that's just kind of stupid to me,I mean y'all can go do that,Idgaf what everyone else does, but for me? It's just a waste of time and money and I couldn't see me doing something like that
  • I'd like it if you could delete gamerscore instead so you could go back and get them all again. I made 3 different profiles just to 100% bioshock
  • @#40 Like a prestige system?
  • I'll buy some games on both platforms, but it really depends on the game and if I feel like playing it through a second time.
  • @37, sorry but you are wrong. I asked that question to xbox support on twitter and they confirmed that you will be able to use both consoles with 1 gamertag
  • @5 I agree with every word you said. achievements are supposed to be something extra to strive for in the game, not the entire reason for getting the game. Here's something I sort of realized after trying forever to get tower of babble and it'll probably make everyone mad but ill say it anyway, an achievement is literally a little square that shows up on yur screen. I still like getting them but killing yourself and spending money on the same game to get as many as you can is just, IMO, pathetic.
  • @37 Muppet, even now you can use your gamertag on multiple devices without issue. 360, windows phone, surface, windows 8 & 7 etc. To even think that's true, you'd have to be several shades of gullible.
  • @41 that would be sweet yea
  • Does anybody know if stuff like levels will be different across consoles? Like say for example I play some COD: Ghosts on 360, get to say third prestige or something, will I be level 1 on Ghosts or will it keep me third because it's the same gamertag?
  • Looks like a scam for you to buy both versions...
  • Achievement whores.....REJOICE!!!!
  • @47. Assuming they will be completely separate. What I really want is to be able to delete games from my profile altogether. I'd probably play a lot more games that way. Having a game that I have no intention of ever playing again at 20/1000 really bugs me..!!
  • I like the completions, will stick to 360 versions so they don't keep updating with 0g achievements.
  • I like it. Granted I won't buy both versions on release, but I do like having the option.
  • I'll buy both versions of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes.
  • I very much doubt I'd replay a game unless it was something really good. Half the crap I pick up, one play through is more than enough - especially if going for achievements. I think I'm gonna stick with 360 for 2014 then make a choice between PS4 and Xbone.
  • I won't buy 2 games for each console. Too many games to play!
  • That is cool. Can't wait for launch day of Xbox One and around birthday time in 2014 or sometime in 2014 for PS4. :) For me is Xbox One is important this Christmas over PS4. :)
  • when Xbox One takes over, it seems inevitable that certain 360 games and 360 arcade games will eventually be made available to purchase on the new system as 'classics'. Of course they will be different versions on a different console so they would have to be paid for again. Plus then the flood gates will really open for achievements as there will be a generation of games you have already completed on 360 with new xbox one achievements to unlock. Microsoft arent daft. Like Nintendo they will ensure that money continues to be made on older classic games and many will want to have the older games on the new system. Without backwards compatibility this is the way it will be, and it will make millions off a new generation of gamers as well as the people who played them first time round. If this happened then it would be interesting to see if they introduced an upgrade fee like nintendo did with wii u virtual console (for people who purchased them first time) or whether they would be bold and just charge full price again (which they would be entitled to do if they wished)
  • @43 Thanks for good info, great news!
  • will people with xbox 1 still be able to play games with those on 360 or what ?
  • I don't really see any value in that. This is probably something cheevo whores do normally, but I never found a need to buy a different version of the game, whether I liked it or not. I played many games over and over, but never even thought about getting another copy just to get same achievements over.
  • i started reading the title and thought that this was gonna be about 360 games working on the xbox one, but then i got to achievements :(
  • waste of money unless they are both bargain bin titles..
  • Hmmmm seperate list, well this will come in handy for Stallion83 and Smrnov.
  • by the time I 100% a game ... like Dragon Age: Origins or Fallout: New Vegas ... I am utterly DONE with that game. I have played it so long and so hard that I will absolutely never play it again. That being the case, I can't imagine ever wanting to play a game all over again on a different system. Even though I might go back and play and prequel to get ready for a sequel, playing it again with the hope of getting another 100% just isn't going to happen!
  • No, I'm not doubling gamerscores. Yes, I'm keeping my X360 because I have a list of about 15 games I want to play (and lots of Rock Band DLC). Also, I can wait until a Halo Xbox One bundle comes out on November 2014 (really looking forward to that). By that time, there wil be a very good amount of Xbox One games to choose from.
  • i'm a used game gamer. I go for bargin nim and recently reduced games. i've only bought a game new twice in the past few years (2006 FFXII was the last one before I got my 360). when prices drop... I will get a second copy for both consoles.
  • All you ass-hats who will buy the same game on different consoles are only condoning the high price of games. On one had sure it's your money, do whatever tickles your fancy (except for all the whiny little twerps who complain about the price of DLC or numerous title releases around the same time have to wait to pay day). On the other hand, these titles that will be released on multiples platforms will have overly inflated sales figures that will eventually lead to price increases for games on the Xbone.
  • Seeing as I won't be getting an X1 right away, I definitely won't be bothered about stacking achievements across both consoles. I can also see Xbox360 and X1 achievements being somehow separated on your gamer card, with another combined score being displayed as your main score. So instead of having one games list mixing both 360 and One games, I'd imagine there would be two, each with it's own total for it's respective console.
  • Who cares, honestly? Boosting your gamerscore got boring ages ago when it became too easy. Achievements are fun to collect, but no one is impressed with your gamerscore nowadays when there's a huge array of easy games to play.
  • Why would you not keep the 360 without backwards compatibility and of course I'm not going to buy the same game twice. Ill game fly the same game twice.
  • @71 I totally agree with you why worry about the 360 if its not going to be backwards compatiibility. This is just MS being their money grubbing self trying to get more money
  • I've ordered the Day One Xbox One edition, mostly because of GTA V and Rocksmith 2014 Edition. However, I'm still going to keep my Xbox 360 to get the remaining achievements in the games that I'm yet to get all achievements in.
  • All the people saying achievements are boring now and crying, this is an achievement website. If you're not into achievements then why the fuck are you here.
  • nah ill just stick to finishing it once, if thats what people wanna do though fair play to them. :)
  • The only games i would do this for are the ones i would be playing even 2-3 years down the road, like GTA5 if they bring out a version for X1(Which i'm guessing they will.)
  • the question never even had to be asked, it pretty much common sense that considering they are 2 different platforms they would give seperate achievement list and gs just like the xbox 360 and the games for windows live did.
  • So NO ONE on here who commented uses Gamefly or Redbox (ripoff)? Jeez. Why BUY the game twice, just rent the 360 version if that's your thing. Gamefly is 23.99 for 2 games a month. Rent the two, beat the one, send it back, play the other while the other is coming..Easy, and cheap. I might do it for games I absolutely love.
  • If i ever do all Devil May Cry's one after another and then see that they're on Xbox One i may Cry! *Huh huh huh get it! Because im talking about Devil May Cry and i may cry if they're all on Xbox One? WHAT DYA MEAN NO FUA!* Anyways lol i will attempt majority of the games again.
  • double dipping is for people who suck and can't get a decent gamerscore on their own skill. 91,000 + gamerscore - a44Special
  • I might if it's a short game with easy achievements but I doubt I'd be willing to double up on a long game such as a Bethesda RPG or something of the open world action variety
  • That's why I really loved and enjoyed GFWL. My favorites trip was playing Dark souls on both platforms. It's really sad that GFWL doesn't more games and supports today.
  • I don't know about buying two versions of the same game - especially if the quality of one is better than the other. I bought "Burnout Revenge" for the original Xbox, because the Xbox 360 version wasn't going to release until much later (I think it was almost a year). If both versions of games release the same day (or within a month of each other)... I'll get the better version! Another consideration, is how many of my friends that I play MP games with, that will get the Xbox One. If some want to wait until the console has been out for a while, or whatever their reason... if they get the 360 version of a game - even if I have the Xbox One already... I might get the 360 version of a game, instead. Would I later get the Xbox One version of the same game... who knows?!
  • I will just get one game but I will still play on the xbox360. and play more on the new xbox.
  • Somehow I missed this announcement. I don't know that I'll buy two versions of anything, but I'll probably rent or borrow the games I really enjoy and double up on them.
  • I don't see the point of having 2 same games get the game for X1 if u can. you can always finish older game on your 360 which you will have.
  • Why would they do this it's so stupid, I have to re do all of this junk all over again, ugh, this is why I'm getting PS4
  • @13 same here I have went back and played bioshock 1 and 2, deadrising and numerous other games just this year.
  • i just hate xbox lets GO SONY whos with type YAY
  • i just hate xbox lets GO SONY whos ever is with me on this type YAY
  • Your gamer score should be the same no matter which one your on because that is your cumulative gamer score that you got on both consoles combined! With the current confusion Mico$oft apparently loves to create they indeed might go with some other stupid system as others on here have mentioned. I will wait & see what the developers are going to do on the new consoles before buying any. Micro transactions & monthly fees for playing multi-player is just as bad as the DRM policy Mico$oft revealed at E3. Any game that does this should be abandoned by all & never bought. Because what have we gamers have learned? The only way to get them to change is hit them where their wallet is!
  • I just need one game and that's it all I really care is about completion.
  • not going to read all of the msgs but just to let you all know... I plan on getting COD: Ghosts for the 360 and on Dec. 31st I am going to trade up to the xbox one version for the extra $10 figure that's not a bad deal even if I don't finish the 360 version so what I got the xb-1 ver for $10 I wont have the xb-1 till probably early 2014 but figure $10 for the game is worth it seeing I am getting it no real point in keeping the 360 copy wont have a use for both would just be stupid and not paying another $65 for the xb-1 copy that be stupid also :P lol so something for you all to think about doing specially if your a achievement wh**e.....
