I wonder what the first ever DLC was..i know they help make more money but how awesome would it be if we got everything for the £40/$60 we pay.

@#1 - Initially, DLC was actual content that was made later.
It started with things like "Expansion Packs". Things like Half-Life 2's Episodes, or Sims upgrades, then it transitioned to smaller things.
Regardless, DLC was meant to be new content to extend a game's life, but also content made -after- the initial release. Specifically, either stuff fans wanted, or things the developers just didn't have time to finish (or things they wanted to do, but wasn't enough to make a new game). This could then be added to games. DLC wasn't made beforehand because developers weren't cocky in assuming people would buy their game. They hoped it did well, and if it did, they would add new stuff.
Some devs still do that, or they plan for DLC, but don't actually make it yet (like Gearbox or Ken Levine), but most of them just make DLC immediately or on disc and defeat the whole thing.
I mean, we now live in an era where even Nintendo are making paid DLC for Mario games.
But to be perfectly honest, the only reason DLC got as awful as it is is because people buy it. Because there are people stupid enough to buy every useless DLC, they will continue to make it. And there are apologists for all the bad ways they're distributed. And this goes hand in hand with achievement whoring, since people will pay money solely to keep their 100% in a game.
So the real problem is the players supporting this kind of stuff, but what can you do? There's simply too many people who don't care.

What a great answer to (@1's) question. Completely agree with everything you said, it is quite disheartening to see a game I'm looking forward to have DLC specific to a certain retalier. I always wonder what the people making those maps are thinking at the time of creating them. Knowing their work will only be accessed by a limited amount of people, even they must dislike the whole system that is in place now. I miss the days where DLC was made after the games release and for the fans satisfaction, today DLC is mainly used as a bargaining chip or a money making scheme. DLC seems to have lost its soul, (some devs still do it right though as you stated)

Boo Challenge Maps...
The Arkham series was far too wedded to them for my liking, they're nothing more than a chore. However Harley Quinn's revenge was a nice apology for all of the Challenge packs.

What was everyone's problem with the challenge maps? I always found them quite fun. And if I got pissed off with a hard one I would just check youtube - most can be done in a couple of mins maximum

@7 - I tend to agree. Though at first I thought completing all the challenge maps would be a chore, once I got into them, they were just what they were supposed to be, a challenge! I enjoyed them and if I got too frustrated, just as you said, check youtube for a quick and easy solution. I'm actually looking forward to more.

Ah yes, expansions... Like Lord of Destruction, which made Diablo II feel like a new game. Or how about Opposing Force and Blue Shift for Half-Life?
Still, I love the IDEA of todays DLC, extending games life and story and all that. But that's just what it should be restricted to; extending the story of a game. A few challenge maps or new set of clothes doesn't quite cut it. But then again that's just my humble opinion.

I can agree to some extent with seasons passes but only when the majority of the pass's content is single-player (I never play online multi-player). Take Assassin's Creed III for example. I'm enjoying the game a lot and the Season Pass gives me the the three part alternate story and some missions, weapons and costumes for single player. And I've saved money by getting the season pass rather than paying for each individual piece of DLC. However season passes that add nothing more than skins and weapons are just unfair to the customers that want a fair deal and a nice bargain.
If all season passes contained content that expanded on the story, adding new characters, missions, weapons, modes and systems, people would care for them a bit more.

@6 after everything @1 said about achievement whoring you dont have to do them. if you find the challenge maps to be a chore then ignore them and stick to the story. but if yur so hellbent on yur 100%, which judging by yur 90k gamerscore you are, then don't complain.

Instead of just doing challenge maps I think it would have been better if they had made these prequel campaigns to Arkahm Origins.
