New Tomb Raider Comic Book to Lead Directly into the Sequel

Tomb Raider is to receive a new comic book next year that will pave the way for the next game in the series following Crystal Dynamic's successful reboot released earlier this year. According to seasoned comic book writer Gail Simone, the new 2014 comic will retain the tone of the first game and lead directly into the sequel.

"I chose to do this series solely because I loved the game so much, so we're definitely keeping the tone of the game," Simone told Kotaku. "I've always loved the classic, cool Lara Croft, but this feels like her origin story, like we're seeing her before she becomes the icon, and it's very compelling to me. The storytelling in the game hooked me instantly.

"The biggest difference is, the game told a claustrophobic story in an isolated setting. We are going globetrotting," she added. "We start just a few weeks after the end of the game, and this is all in continuity, it will be Tomb Raider canon, and lead DIRECTLY into the sequel. This is what got me excited; we get to be part of Lara Croft history."

The new Tomb Raider comic is set to be published by Dark Horse and released on 26th February, 2014. Does that mean Crystal Dynamic's next Tomb Raider game will be revealed to coincide with the comic book? Anything's possible.

  • Great News. The new game was great direction for the series
  • I loved the Tomb Raider game from this year. I'd love to play the sequel too, hopefully it'll be a Next Gen title
  • One of the best games this year IMO.
  • Please ... please ... please ... leave out the multiplayer and have a longer Sinple Player.
  • iv always been a mass tomb raider fan and played them all multiple times, and this reboot was absolutely amazing, one of the best games of this year in my opinion, and really looking forward to see where it goes, but as sinz said, leave the multiplayer out and no co op, tomb raider always and should be a total single player immersion
  • Awesome! Normally I don't really read novels or comics for games but I'm going to check this out! :)
  • I remember playing the originals on PS1 and really not liking them [controls or story,] she's a character I never even slightly cared about or liked. The new game though has a good story with plenty of character growth and immersion and I look forward to seeing what happens with the character even though I usually dislike playing as females in games.
  • Was it just me or did tomb raider have abit much shooting (action) in it. Im not saying it was bad or anything cause I loved the game. Looking forward to it.
  • I loved Tomb Raider Remake it dominated the Classic ones i would love and hope for an amazing sequel to the one and only Tomb Raider.
  • 2013's Tomb Raider was a solid game, I'd love a sequel. I just hope they remove all MP aspects of the game so achievement hunters don't feel burdened with completing that portion.
  • I am up for it. The comic that shipped with my copy of the game wasn't too bad but this sounds more fleshed out.
  • #4 Agreed, agreed with you. MP need remove off in Tomb Raider 2 and ontoward to more series. Tomb Raider got amazing story, graphics and gameplay in huge single-player campaign. MP is ruined. MP no need in Tomb Raider 2. I really hope Lara Croft can now swim underwater in Tomb Raider 2. :)
  • Tomb Raider - How she got her dual pistols The comic - How she got her shorts?
  • KEEP THE MULTIPLAYER, Didn't affect the single player at all so leave it in, I had a shit load of fun with it.
  • @10 that's not how it works. They're not going to leave out a feature just so some achievement whores can get an easier 1000 G
  • My guess is the second game will have a hub world within the Croft Mansion and you will go on globe trotting missions from there. Next gen, multiplayer, and there will be challenges within missions and the missions will be big multi part ones (or open areas) each tying into a greater story.
  • @15 They should leave out the feature because it was terribly done and was a massive waste of time and money that could have been spent on the single player portion of the game.
  • @15, that's not the only reasons....and achievement whores and achievement hunters are two completely different things but whatever you say. The MP was awful as is, there's absolutely no need for it in the sequel. People who enjoyed it are in the minority.
  • Hayley Atwell should play Lara Croft in the movie reboot.
  • I'm surprised after enix saying that the reboot flopped I was expecting that to be it.
  • 2 days late with this story, Shacknews has you beat yet again 360a! But in all seriousness, I'll look forward to the sequel, just get rid of the crap MP and give us a longer story and more side stuff to do.
  • The latest TR was absolutely brilliant. However, it had way too few classic Tomb Raider puzzles and actual tomb raiding. Looking forward to the sequel on Xbox One. My guess is Christmas 2014 for release date.
  • @18 there's nothing wrong with the multiplayer, it functions well enough (although it is frustrating starting out) and it adds longevity to the game which is a good thing.
  • surprise it's not top cow. first time by dark horse.
  • @23 - Well enough simply isn't good enough. They're competing with heavyweights like Battlefield, CoD and Halo.
  • This is some great news that even though Square thought the reboot was a failure to see that they're not giving up on the franchise and moving forward with not only an sequel, but a comic as well. Can't wait to pick up the comic next year and hopefully the next TR will be on the Xbox One.
  • Well, if 4 millions of sale is a failure, Square Enix should rather stop producing video games. They are just too greedy and want to sell as much as Call of Duty franchise.
  • Should be Top Cow doing the comics.
  • Loved the Singleplayer, meh with the Multiplayer. Not every game needs to have multiplayer, some rely on it but TR doesnt need too. Thought it was a lovely balance of Stealth, shoot them up! & raiding tombs. Need more Tombs to raid as that brings in a bit of the old TR which i loved. Also need to bring the Mansion back as your base, with hidden rooms, tombs & be able to Explore the mansion like back in the day. Recommend this game to anyone.
  • @25 Competing with Battlefield, CoD and Halo? You can't really say that TR was competing with them when they are entirely different genre's with largely different demographics [which only some overlap.] Nevermind the fact that CoD/Battlefield are completely different to Halo so you're comparing three very different groups. Attitudes like this are why we didn't see an improved multiplayer in DS3, the DS2 multiplayer was fun but needed more work and it was a shame not to see it in DS3.
