Jens Matthies Talks Wolfenstein: The New Order, Waging War Within Machine & That Scene With Jenny in The Darkness

We were fairly positive about the upcoming Wolfenstein: The New Order in our preview this week, and by fairly positive, we mean very. It’s no surprise that some of the people behind it were some of the people behind Starbreeze’s big hits, such as The Darkness and Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay.

Jens Matthies, Creative Director on Wolfenstein: The New Order, was one of those people. In fact, he was very influential when it came to creating that infamous Jenny scene in The Darkness… you know, the one from the couch. Great scene, by the way.

We caught up with Matthies recently to talk all things Wolfenstein: The New Order, from what were the pillars they forged the new game upon, all the way to what Matthies makes of a certain Warren Spector quote about their game. Gulp! Oh, and yes, we have a good chat about the aforementioned Jenny scene. I guess what I’m saying is, don’t miss this one, folks!

Oh, and don’t forget to read all our pre-E3 Bethesda previews, from Wolfenstein: The New Order to Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within.

  • i think it's the fact that every single video i watch on this website is preceded by an unskippable 30 second trailers, when on youtube only certain videos have adverts and even fewer have ones that cannot be skipped after 5 seconds :/ it's so annoying. At least you've gotten rid (for the time being...) of the interactive ads... OT: this could just be crazy enough to warrant a buy :D
  • Adverts? What adverts? I don't get any, on my PC, my tablet or phone.
  • It's called AdBlock... ;)
  • The Darkness was one of the best games this gen.
  • @ 1 I think this will be totally crazy enough to warrant a buy.
  • It seems weird that the only other games I want to play more than this is GTA5 and Watch Dogs. This game looks awesome. And I agree with #4. The Darkness 1 and 2 were both awesome. I'd love a Darkness 3.
  • #3 Does your adblock work here? I'm using Firefox with adblocker and it doesn't work on this site. Seems to work everywhere else, but not here. I really wouldn't mind the ads if - 1. They didn't usually last such a long time(I'd prefer 5 second skipable ads) 2. And if they didn't reset and make me watch them EVERY time I load the video up again. Sometimes I'll pause the video to leave a comment about something I just heard, then it will reset the page and make me watch it again.
  • I use adblock plus for firefox and I got rid of the ads. After seeing in-game footage, I am quite pleased by what I see. I hope they kept the level design of Wolfenstein & Doom. If they go linear like Duke did, I'll puke...
  • @3I have adblock and it doesn't always work on this site's video player.
  • unless I'm just not using a good enough filter. I just use the standard one, which do you use?
  • Also, the couch scene? Really dan? Thats what you call the Jenny scene? Not the really intense bit in the orphanage?
  • @11 that's what I was thinking too. Nothing can top that orphanage scene
  • @8 - Even the older shooters are still somewhat linear, all basic shooters are. The only true non-linear games are RPGs like Skyrim or Fallout. OT: Loving what I am seeing and I cannot wait for this game to come out. I do hope they stick to the older style of shooters (somewhat open level, locked doors, find weapons, ammo, armor, etc.). Loved that bit at the end of the video. XBone lol
  • @14 And a crap ton of secret places. OT:Been a while since I was excited for a first-person shooter. Hopefully we get some news on Doom 4 soon as well, since that game just doesn't seem to know when to come out. Doesn't have to be a release date, just any kind of news will suffice!
  • Holy shit I have that exact bacon and eggs shirt. That's all.
  • Looks good, but not like a next gen boost.
  • Looks really good. Also liked the mention of Darkness 1, that game rocked.
  • wasn't impressed at all with the last wolfenstein. don't know if i'll bother or not
  • @13 - Level design is just that, an entire level with no checkpoints, once you clear it out, you move on to the next level. You can go back and look for items, secret doors, etc. CoD and all of the modern shooters are linear. Although Halo, to a certain extent, is more of a level design.
  • Meant @13... Derp.
  • is this going to be on the xbox 1 or 360??
