|I agree with Molyneux. Both the PS4 and next Xbox so far have been honestly rather uninteresting because they have yet to announce any games that I can't get on 360 or PS3. Why throw down hundreds of dollars on something that doesn't even have any super awesome next-gen-exclusive games announced? I'm sure this will change come closer to release, but really now. All I want is the games. |

|@2 i'll agree about PS4, not having any games worth picking it up yet, but you cant really say the same about the next xbox considering the only fact we know, that isn't a rumour, is that there will be a next xbox. |
OT: the thing is, the PS4 has been revealed and has a lot of social and media features, if MS doesn't include some of them then PS4 will have extra features over the next xbox and may affect peoples decision on what console to buy. its kind of funny that he mentions nothing about the PS4 though, when that has a button on the controller dedicated to that social stuff. if a game console can be more than a game console, then why not. as long as i can still play games on it i couldn't really give a fuck, and i'm pretty certain the next xbox will be capable of playing games

|You know, I've got no problem at all with Microsoft including all the video/web/social bollocks they like, my only problem is how they seem to want to do it. |
Make the console a dedicated games machine with the ability to install these twiddly bits if you want them rather than making a half a dozen pages that I have to flick through to find the one and only thing I'll use it for. Although as ZzZCrossyZzZ said above, a high level of dashboard customisation would be a good alternative.

If it has good hardware and plays the games, i wouldn't mind a recording gameplay and posting to youtube option, but the rest....no thanks. Of course it's moot if it's forced always online and no used games...then hello playstation. Microsoft need to learn you can't FORCE customers into liking a change. |

|@17 Because watching Netflix on a computer monitor is so much better than my 55 inch flat screen. |
I know there will still be a solid focus on games, I'm not concerned about Microsoft going out of its way to lock down exclusives I'd much rather have that $500 console do much more than simply play the video games.
This is essentially the same type of argument as people that assume if multiplayer was removed from a game the single player would be better, not an all encompassing true fact. So it stands to reason that even if Microsoft decided to end all entertainment venues that it does not mean anything more would come in the form of gaming. Providing less of something does not necessarily mean more of something else.

|I don`t want to pay extra money for all those apps and kinect shit you fucking idiots (microsoft). |
You can go from 299 Dollars, Euro`s whatever to like 150??? A price that players would pay for a strong gaming console. You can even sell more consoles with a price like 150 Dollars/Euros instead of 299 if you would just deliver us a very very strong gaming console.
When i talk with my friends on xbox live, i am not talking about real life stuff and shit, we are talking about the game we play, so why the fuck i would care about social stuff like Facebook and shit?
When i play a game i want to be in a different world, away from the "every day" life, but i have the feeling that you try to link Gaming with Real Life shit.
How can i jump into "another world" when i have shit like Facebook and other social media permanently on my back?
I KNOW i can ignore all that social stuff and apps , i don`t need to logg to facebook and i also don`t need to install those social media stuff, but this is just an example from what i feel.
Remember the good ol`days where you buy a console..JUST a gaming console..put your game in it and enjoy!
Now i have more and more the feeling that i have to go trough fucking labyrinths of apps, to find the "Play Button"
(sounds dumb but it`s just an example, yeah i am pissed off to pay extra cash $$$ for something which i will never use...

Im looking forward putting $400-$500 on the next gen xbox just so i can play BF4 with 64 players in one lobby, not 6v6.
by the by, you're not paying an extra $150 for apps. that money is going into the hardware to LET you play those games.

|I've always liked Peter Molyneux, it's sad that he isn't in the Xbox loop anymore since last year. but for someone who was in his position a year ago, just shows the gravity of the situation Microsoft is about to get them-self's into. by straying away from being a true "gaming console" and trying to make it everyone's one and only entertainment device across all boards. which I think is a VERY HUGE MISTAKE. |
and Microsoft will suffer greatly from it. but the Microsoft true fans like myself will suffer even more.

It's just stupid, if I want to watch TV, I turn on the TV, if I want to watch movies, I turn on the TV. If I want to play games, I'll buy a GAMES console. It's a bloody shame. The PS4 gets more and more appealing with every Xbox article I read. |

When the machine starts its right on whatever is in the disc and its one button push to play it and if you want to play an arcade game and its to much hassle to hit your bumper a few times you could always push your Xbox button and go to my games. Despite his hyperbole, Peter Molyneux is far from the only or even worst offender of over-promising.
Go have a watch of the Gearbox Dev Diary's about Aliens: Colonial Marines.
Take in everything they said about the game, the franchise and how much they were putting into it.
Then have a watch of this:

|@41 That's the point it cannot be proven that any of the money that goes into the entertainment and media points of the console would be converted into the gaming aspect of the console. They can't simply keep making the console more powerful and sell it for the same price tag. |
So by that logic you want them to roll the $150 million they spend on entertainment apps into the gaming aspect and cause the cost of the console to increase from $500 to $700-$800. It's unnecessary and would detract from sales for the business. However by that same notion exclusives just aren't created out of thin air so they would need the concepts available to them to pump money into them, while at the same finding an exclusive that is worth taking the risk on.
Not to mention the fact that their business model has PROVEN that the majority of gamers want something more than a gaming console. With a sole focus on gaming the risk is run that it will be forgotten by new tech. However you create something that has a broader scope than just the ability to play video games and you reach a broader market.
Maybe I'm in the minority but I'm glad my gaming console is no longer just a gaming console. If they continue on with the vision they have eventually the only thing you'll need is your Xbox and an internet connection to allow yourself to do anything you could possibly imagine. I'm fine with that because the focus on gaming is never going to go away, because inevitably it will be what sells the console above everything else.

|The price of Gold goes up, the number of ads and apps I never use increases. I'm paying for services I neither want nor use on my Xbox, and I'd prefer they stop blanketing their decisions on everybody uniformly. Despite what anybody says about these apps or their usefulness, I do not want to pay for them. |
My connection is 512 kbit ADSL, which barely qualifies as broadband. It's good enough to go 53/6 on MW2 or 35/9 on Halo 4, but it's absolute crap for streaming above 480p. The last time I used the Hulu app on the Xbox, I could not select the quality and it kept trying to ram HD of some flavor down my intertubes (720p+) and it plain was not happening.
Until the apps can do something useful (like playing last.fm stream over a video game, or running a browser concurrently) they will continue to be useless. I settled into using all of these things on my laptop and I see no reason whatsoever to do anything with my Xbox but game on it.

|I agree with Molyneux 100%. The XBOX is a GAME console, not an APP console. When I buy an XBOX, it's to play games, not look on Facebook or watch videos (things I can easily do on my computer). I'll admit, they were good ideas at first... until I found out they're not nearly as good as doing them on your computer (you still can't favorite videos on YouTube, for instance). The next XBOX should focus on games first, online service second, everything else last. |

If I wanted to be social, I would get on my computer. If I wanted to listen to music, I would listen to my ipod (2nd generation) or get on my computer. All of these new features going in to the next generation Xbox will crowd my hard drive and no one in my family, other than my brother, uses an Xbox. I tried the Kinect to get my family involved with games, but the Kinect is buggy as well and it's just a big hassle. |

he exaggerated a bit when it came to the fable series but theyre still solid games in them selves but honestly if you forget them completely hes still a legend and @42 i have a massive amount for respect for him because honestly hes one of a very few devs these days that deserve it, hes a real gamer himself, he doesnt try to stiff us every few days with stupid features and pretty much everything he touched for about 10 years straight was a masterpiece... a good few since but those were the years before EA royally screwed bullfrog.
also he developed a bunch of games that are still very enjoyable 20 years later so thats always a win since most out now will even be playable in 20 years.. even with lionhead he managed to do black and white and black and white 2 around fable which were fantastic games

I don't want to pay an extra AU$200 for Kinect and a bunch of apps I'll never use. That's why I like the Wii U - better than anything else out there, but cheaper than some PS3 & 360s packs and the same price as others. The new PS & Xboxes will be a lot more than a Wii U, possibly even the price of two Pro Wii U's. Considering games for the Wii U are about AU$20 to $40 cheaper ($50 to $80 instead of $90 to $100), and the games on the new Xbox and PS will only be a little bit prettier but without the awesome touchscreen Wii U gamepad (but cheap knockoffs again). |
I might buy a new Xbox or PS in 2 to 3 years when they are more reasonably priced, and then I can catch up with the older exclusive games that I want.

|All I want to be able to do is hide all the crap on the dash, as I seriously will probably never buy any movies or music on there. Closest I've come is using thirdparty stuff anyway...Netflix, HBO Go. But I will never use the Music channel and I seriously doubt anybody does. I'm just glad they finally had the common sense to take the Zune branding off it. A Zune wasn't even worth propping up a crooked table. Got my mom one for Christmas years ago and she just gets me socks for Christmas now. Not even new socks. Salvation Army socks. |

|wasn't he just talking about how gaming needs to move in the direction of mobile style minigames not that long ago? |
regardless, he hit the nail on the head. i want a system that plays games, and does that awesome. i don't need a system that lets someone remote desktop into my system and play my game for me.

|I never thought I'd say this... but Peter Molyneux is right. I get Facebook on my laptop, my phone, my tablet... if I switch my Xbox on, it's not to watch Facebook. I can almost understand Netflix/LoveFILM, it allows you to stream TV shows and movies (things that belong on TV, but have traditionally only been on PC) to your TV. Great. But putting things like Facebook, that have no business being on your TV, or Sky TV, which belongs on your TV but is in fact already on your TV (I mean, who's streaming Sky on 360 when they're a Sky subscriber? Apart from people too cheap to pay for multiroom?), it's going too far. Way too far. And even if they want to include that stuff, I mean fine, but make it subtle. Play it down. Don't big it up like it's actually anywhere near equal importance to the games. |

|@7 - I guess you aren't very old? Whilst he may have been a touch too full of shit the last few years, his resume is full of great games, both at Lionhead and his earlier work heading up Bullfrog. |
