Website and Trailers Disappear for XCOM Shooter

The future of 2K’s XCOM first-person shooter has been thrown into doubt after the website and trailers for the game were removed from the internet. Could this be in preperation for the rumoured The Bureau announcement?

Visit the XCOM FPS’s official website and you’ll be greeted by a 404 error, while the two trailers for the game on 2K’s official YouTube page have also been removed.

Announced in 2010, the XCOM FPS angered purists and fans of the original games, thanks to its shift to the shooter genre. It has since suffered several delays and was said to have shifted to a downloadable squad-based, third-person shooter title. Most recently, rumours have begun circulating that XCOM was being rebranded as something called The Bureau.

Indeed, such have been delays that XCOM: Enemy Unknown, last year’s hit strategy reboot, was announced and released during the time the XCOM FPS has been quiet.

During a financial call in February, 2K told investors that production on the title continued. Now it looks as though it has either been scrapped or radically overhauled.

For their part, 2K "has no comment about the sites being down today."

  • Was Really Looking forward to this, I hope its just being rebranded rather than being canned completely.
  • It's gone. -_-
  • Heard about this yesterday. Blows. Probably the last FPS game I was looking forward to.
  • Honestly i'm not fussed about this. After playing the reboot of the classic (Enemy Unknown) I don't feel any other genre could have competed with that game. It was fantastic and it definitely suits Xcom more than another FPS. I've played though Enemy Unknown so many times and it doesn't get old.
  • I'm glad, saves people been ripped off, after a game gets delayed so many times, it usually means they are having trouble with it. See: Duke Nukem, and more recently Aliens.
  • @5 The thing is, DNF and A:CM were supposed to be developed mostly by Gearbox Software. And arguably, the only decent game those guys have under their belt is Borderlands. I think 2K Marin would handle "development hell" differently than Gearbox Software. I mean, Marin was responsible for Bioshock 2. Which obviously wasn't as phenomenal as the original or Infinite, but it was still a fine game.
  • I probably won't buy this game if it becomes a third-person, squad-based shooter, unless it for some reason keeps all of the style, which I doubt it will. I was excited for the first-person aspect and the whole style of the game in comparison to the other XCOMs. It would be something new and different, but it seems that they're trying to make it closer to the older (or the newest one) of the XCOMs. They're fine games but they're not for me.
  • If the website and videos were taken down for this game, that isn't a good sign. It usually means that the game has been canceled or going through a complete overhaul. Regardless, I'm not exactly looking forward to this game. Not that it's terrible, but it doesn't look like something that we'd expect from the people who brought us Bioshock.
  • Maybe it'll reappear next gen. Heres hoping.
