Disney Closes LucasArts

Disney is closing LucasArts as a games developer and publisher. Instead the company will now operate solely as a licensee of the Star Wars name to external developers.

The move will leave hundreds of games developers out of a job.

"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games,” reads a statement.

“As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."

LucasArts was acquired by Disney in late 2012, as part of a deal worth $4.05 billion. At the time CEO Robert Iger said, "We're likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console," leading to fears that Star Wars 1313, LucasArts’ “mature” oriented title may be scrapped.

Now it seems that not only will we never see Star Wars 1313, we’ll never see an internally-developed title from LucasArts ever again.

LucasArts is responsible for some of the most charished games in the history of the medium, starting with its classic adventure games of the late 80s and early 90s, including Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island. In later years the company focused increasingly on producing Star Wars titles, to varying degrees of success.

This story will no doubt run for some time. In the meantime, best of luck to all those that have lost their jobs.

  • FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!
  • Bit late for April fools isn't it? Seriously why the hell would Disney do this...
  • Wow indeed. Shame.
  • More proof that Disney will bugger up the whole damn franchise...
  • What the hell!?
  • I wish these men & women the best of luck in finding a new job. Their contributions to the gaming industry over the last decade have helped to shape gaming into what it is today. While this is certainly grim news for all affected employees, hopefully this will mean we see some new and fresh ideas come out of the Star Wars franchise. I will be crossing my fingers and hoping for a true sequel to KotORII.
  • Wow, that's just too much.
  • cunt's there goes a studio that has provided me with some fantastic games over the years
  • RIP Lucasarts, all the great games you put out (X-Wing, Dark Forces, Battlefront, Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, Sam & Max, Rebal Assault, LOOM and more) will never be forgotten. May 1982 - April 2013.
  • F××k U Disney :/
  • Fuck Disney and their child molesting giant rodent infested theme parks!
  • But April Fools was two days ago :'(
  • This deal keeps getting worse and worse. Is it just me or do Disney hate games? No Marvel Studios games have been made since Disney took that over and now Lucasarts is a goner
  • Oh. My. God.
  • Lucas Arts havent made anything near the quality of their older games in years, may be for the best, remember the good games they made and not Force Unleashed 2
  • Reminds me of that South Park episode we should of just given the IP to China.
  • I have seen Disney do NOTHING positive for Star Wars. A sad ending for a wonderful franchise. I guess money wins out in the end.
  • 'We'd like to thank all of the hard working employee's here at Lucasarts for developing some fantastic games for the past few decades. Now would you kindly pack up your stuff and GTFO, we're making an iPad game and you're too talented to be involved.' Seems kinda abrupt and not to mention unnecessary. It's also a big middle finger to the employees.
  • About time. Lucas Arts haven't done anything decent for years, and have just been rehashing the same old crap time and time again. This is a good thing. These people who have lost their jobs can go on and make games that aren't bound to lucas arts or the star wars franchise.
  • Disgusting.
  • Fuck - Well... literally stops writing his resume to Lucasarts.
  • https://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/04/03/lucasarts-rep-says-star-wars-1313-might-be-saved.aspx read
  • Old, this was announced 5 mins ago!! :P Also, I'm surprised no one has posted the noooooooooooooooooooo website on here!
  • Star Wars 1313 might have actually been a success... good one Disney, really well done..
  • Damn it Disney!! Was looking forward to 1313 sooo much. Fuck their "Your profit must be *This* high to ride".
  • Disney is going to ruin Star Wars
  • Lucasarts was dead long before Disney got to it, nerds.
  • I just screamed on my monitor
  • This does suck, but it doesn't mean all Star Wars games will suck. Knights of the Old Republic was contracted to Bioware and they were good. Gotta love shareholders.
  • The force is obviously not with Disney.
  • Gotta say, South Park all over. That damn Mickey Mouse is an evil bastard. Not only did he screw over the Jonas Brothers, now he's screwing with Star Wars! Not cool at all!
  • it i think i speak for most people when i say disney can fist themselves with a rusty fork
  • God damn it, Disney.
  • Release the NERD RAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • The possibility of 1313 being saved is the one silver lining in this. My heart goes out to all those folks who lost their jobs today.
  • Not only have you fucked over hundreds of hard workers that brought us the masterpieces of knights of the old republic or monkey island, but you fucked over your fans. Go fuck yourself Disney, goddamnit don't you know that George Lucas is the only one that can fuck up Star Wars? Jeez
  • As much as I like Disney, this is a bad move on their part to do this. Hopefully they will decide to do Star Wars games on consoles and not some stupid Iphone or Facebook game. I agree with someone who said that Lucas Arts was dead before this. I think people forget that Lucas wanted get rid of Lucas Arts awhile back anyways, so Disney just happened to be the one to pull the plug on it.
  • 1313 the new Duke Nukem ... :(
  • wow, this is ridiculous...
  • I love how all Parent companies that let a large amount of staff go always say "We really appreciate your hard work and dedication." Really if you did you wouldn't be letting them go. The translation to the statement that was released should read. "We are moving Lucasarts to a licensing model so as to get paid no matter how bad the Star Wars game that is released, actually is."
  • ...............................
  • Maybe they can do a Kingdom Hearts Star wars version now?
  • Disney ruins everything.
  • Disney does some amazing 1st party stuff especially mobile, the little bit of disney games on android show this, but they are horrible to console. I can't remember a console disney game I cared about since Ducktales on NES. It's a real shame all the renowned console game development studios getting shut down these days. Hopefully this will spur the revolution needed to change the industry and get developers/publishers growing, creating, and taking chances again with games. Last thing we need is more COD and Skylanders rip-off's (looking at you Disney Infinite).
  • Be prepared for a slough of awful Star Wars games. Licensing means a lot of loss of control on the games' development.
  • http://www.nooooooooooooooo.com/ (Sorry guys, couldn't resist. o_o Shame about 1313 too.)
  • Damn now that stinks.
  • Hope your happy George......
  • Disney sucks dick. I don't know what else to say..
  • @17 apart from commissioning three new films ,right?
  • When's the last time LucasArts put out a good game anyways? Maybe a top developer will license a Star Wars game that is good. Always hate to hear people lose their jobs but from a gaming perspective I don't think it's a big loss.
  • Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
  • @20 with your logic, Activision should have died a long time agao as well with their rehahed, copy & paste CoD. OT. Well there goes hope for KotOR3 & Battlefront 3. Fuck you Disney.
  • "We're likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console" Well..At least now I know what I WON'T be playing.
  • i can hear sound of silence playing at the background track of the closing doors
  • What the hell people? Lucasarts was dead for a long time. Lucasarts is the worst developer of the decade. Always pretending like their product is ground breaking or interesting, when it is based on half a decade old trends (Uncharted, God of War). The last game that was good was KOTOR, but that was shared effort with Bioware. And Monkey Island is in NO WAY comparable to games of the new times. Lucasarts is just chucking out a demented or mediocre game after another. When Disney finally outsources the license to more people than Bioware and sale bin developers we could actually get something that is better than KOTOR. Remember the RPG Obsidian pitched? Old Lucasarts would have never done that. With Disney we have at least a chance.
  • I'm sorry people, but Star Wars games suck, it's a fact, there fucking terrible, this was bound to happen sooner or later.
  • "We're likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console" F*** social and mobile! I want more mature content for console!
  • well there goes any hope for a new indiana jones game.
  • @52 - I agree wholeheartedly. Hate to see anyone loose their job, but fuck LucasArts. They've sat on Republic Commando, Battlefront and others while putting out Kinect shit and a sequel to Force Unleashed? Sorry but a business model like that is going to be the death of you.
  • Final nail in the Battlefront 3 game? Maybe they can sell the rights to another developer....like Activision.
  • No doubt this lessens the chance of a Grim Fandango HD release on XBLA... Seriously though, this sucks. Hope they get new work soon
  • shame.... i was looking forward to star wars 1313... oh welll.... i heard they prefer pixar studio over lucasarts.
  • I felt thousands shouting in rage through the force,......and i am among them. Seriously disney, your games don't do well, aside from KH, this is a massive mistake. And yes i am aware that KH is mostly done by square enix for those who're going to point it out
  • FUCK YOU DISNEY, FUCK YOU!
  • @20: Completely agreed. The last time LucasArts made anything worth playing was back in the goddamn 90's. Much like Rage 2's cancellation, nothing of value has been lost here.
  • na na na na naaaa I'm Lovin it
  • Thank fuck for that bye bye Lucas arts ya piece of shite :D
  • @68 except for people's jobs.
  • Dear Disney, Please go choke on a bag of dicks. Signed, Me.
  • Jesus give it a year or so and all well be stuck with is EA and Activision... Yay
  • dang guess no sequel for the force unleashed series which i personally enjoy however as the old saying goes "all good things must come to an end"
  • So Disney just killed Star Wars?
  • As much as 1313 interested me, I was wanting The Force Unleashed 3 the most. As mediocer as the second one was, I was invested in the story and the fact that it ended on a cliffhanger made me want a third. And here I thought Disney would respect the franchise, not kill it.
  • Grim Fangdango...good times. Run you pigeons, it's Robert Frost!
  • To all of the terrorist organizations in the world, please bomb Disney's corporate HQ. Thank you.
  • Disney you c*nt's, how dare you do this to the gaming developers and the gaming community itself. This is a major slap in the face and a humongous disappointment. Feeling especially unhappy myself for Star Wars 1313 which was shaping up to be fantastic. Damn you Disney, Damn you...
  • The only people I feel sorry for are all of those that have just lost their jobs, I hope they find work with other more sucessful studios.
  • Remember the days you hoped for First Assault and 1313 to come out? Yeah, me too... Seriously, LucasArts - R.I.P, will always remember the days when I had fun with Jedi Knight/Dark Forces series as a child. One more thing... fuck you disney, fuck you, if you do shit stuff like this, then what will happen to new movie trilogy, right? FUCK YOU DISNEY.
  • FUCK DISNEY. Really looking forward to 1313.
  • Cunts. Never liked Disney.
  • You have no idea how long I sat here screaming "NOOOOOO!" at my monitor. This is genuinely disappointing news.
  • Like many others on here, I am middle aged and grew up with lots of their games. X-Wing Tie fighter was one of my all time faves & my bro loves Monkey Island. Thanks to all the talented people at LucasArts for these & much more. Sad face.
  • Disney doesn't care about humans. They're just excited about adding JarJar to their ranks.
  • Fuck yourself Disney........... Fuck yourself. Not only did lucasarts create some great games but they have also been around forever. How can you close a company that is a big part of video game history.
  • Darth Vader made with microtransactions or something trained by ewan mcgregor married to Natalie Portman father of mark hamill Darth Vader survived Jar Jar Binks but could not survive Mickey Mouse
  • Now I gotta turn my back on Disney.
  • Well there goes all my hopes for KotOR3. Up yours Disney.
  • There are only three words I need to say about this: FUCK. YOU. DISNEY.
  • dam phone . I delete that post but mobile bucks up again after mark hamill it was going to say destroyed by Ian mcdermid brutally killed by mickey mouse I need a better mobile phone before I post again
  • This is awful. Disney, you are awful.
  • Sucks for all the people who lost jobs, but they haven't made a good game in a long time. Hopefully someone picks up 1313 and some of the current developers get picked up with it.
  • FFS Disney carry on making Hannah Montana and leave the big stuff to the big boys. Battlefront 3 oh dear
  • Confirmed via Kotaku that 150 employees have lost their jobs AND Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault have both been officially cancelled.
  • Good by Star Wars.
  • HATE YOU DISNEY!!! Thank for ruined LucasArts and Star Wars franchise!!!
  • @90 "Well there goes all my hopes for KotOR3" for all honesty?,we have probably got better chance now...they say they have closed LucasArts, but they will license out Star wars to external developers this is probably the best news this year!!...back could be the days of a Knights of the old republic game by Bioware or Obsidian,or Star Wars Battlefront from Pandemic(or someone else, seen as though EA closed Pandemic) LucasArts announcement a year or two back saying they would be entirely in-house was a very poor decision based on what LucasArts have developed this gen So,yeah at first i was upset....but it could turn out to be great I just hope the 150 employees are able to find work....I know Gearbox and Ubisoft are hiring,so hopefully they can be okay
  • Well this sucks, was looking forward to 1313, hopefully someone picks it up. Also hope all the people that lost their jobs in this ordeal find another.
  • Good bye GOTY2014 Star Wars 1313, rest in peace...
  • @99, Didn't Bioware make the KotOR games?
  • That's sad. First for the people who lost their jobs and second because I was really looking forward to next-gen Star Wars games. A lot of people complained about the Force Unleashed series, but I loved them. I guess the only future of Star Wars games will be based on the movies?
  • Seriously guys, let's be rational here and think about what Lucasarts have done on Xbox 360...Star Wars Kinect - shit, Star Wars: Republic Heroes - shit, The Force Unleashed - decent, The Force Unleashed II - shit, cancelled Battlefront III 80% through development, cancelled an Indiana Jones game a few years back and refused to release any games that gamers wanted like KOTOR3. It's been a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away since they did anything remotely noteworthy or that fans have been clamouring for. 1313 looked good but it probably would have turned out an average game. Don't get me wrong, Disney are a big bag of dicks but we really haven't lost anything here!
  • @99, well I completely missed half of your comment. Sorry about that.
  • Lucasarts has been a huge part of my gaming life for almost 30 years, the monkey island series has been one of many favourite series ever, I'm not surprised that Disney closed them though, they're all about the dollar signs. Bunch of scumbags the lot of them. Good luck to everyone who's lost their job
  • No way :( Gutted. My thoughts go out to the people who lost their jobs. Sad as well if we lose 1313.
  • Well shit.... I knew there was a reason I hated Disney.
  • KOTOR3 would be fucked anyway since Bioware is owned by EA. Well... I will always remember fondly the countless hours I've put in the first X-Wing Simulator game and its sequel Tie-Fighter. Those were excellent games. Thank you again Lucas Art. Full Throttle was quite fun also...
  • Great, whore out the license to no-name studios who will work for the lowest amount of money and produce total garbage. Awesome.
  • Because they don't have enough money...shame. Leave it to Disney to ruin something good. And here goes the rest of the Star Wars franchise. What were you thinking George Lucas?!
  • I've got mixed feelings on this. There hasn't been a great Lucas Arts game in a long time. There have been good ones, but a bunch of mediocre games and a few good ones are not enough anymore.
  • So bye bye Star Wars original games hello cheap movie tie ins
  • I find Disney's lack of faith in lucasarts disturbing. It sucks they are closing some of my favorite games came from lucasarts.
  • Next is marvel comics!
  • This could work out for the better. LucasArts has been a mess for a while now and the quality of Star Wars games have plummeted.
  • More jobs lost US just keeps gettin shittier economy wise and as for Disney why buy lucasfilms than shutdown everything? I mean it is common practice when large corporations buy other big ones to shutdown some projects but their cleaning house!!!
  • Absolutely gutted! Was bringing back memories of Star Wars Bounty Hunter on my ps2 :( This is pretty indicative of how I feel about this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q81O4wXBlD4
  • This is absolutely heartbreaking news. I grew up on the adventure games that LucasArts released in the 90s, and they are the reason why I still play games to this day. Those games were clever, well written, and full of heart. RIP, LucasArts. I will miss you.
  • #116 agreed... ppl this doesnt mean the end to Star Wars games or other games/ip's from Lucas Arts. It just means, those ppl(that specific developer) won't be making them. That is actaully good news for gamers/fans, except for the ppl who were layed off. Disney still owns the games/IP's, and never said anything about shelving games, nor ip/s. So dont get your panties is a bunch. Sheesh. Like someone else mentioned, this is the best thing to happen to the star Wars games IP, to let some other decent developer get a crack at Star Wars games.
  • And they'll sell the license to outside developers for more money. Remove the cost of paying the LucasArts employees, remove the cost of making the games, collect from selling the license, collect from profits made on each copy. Nice. I see them thinking with their wallets, but what a magnificent dick move. It is incredibly heartless to displace hundreds of developers overnight. I'm sure they'll be able to find work somewhere else, because LucasArts was not small potatoes, and I'm sure having past experience there will mean something to potential employers. Still, good luck to them, thanks for the memories. I'm actually heading to Disney World in two weeks. First thing I'm going to do when I get there is find Mickey and rocket kick him in the cock.
  • It was as if thousands cried out in the force and then fell silent... Lucas Arts made so many great games ack in he day... All my favorite point and click games... Damn you Disney!
  • And after I rocket kick Mickey in the cock, I'm going to 122's house.
  • FTA: "After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games,” someone needs to remind disney that lucasarts made more than just star wars games
  • This sounds like a move straight out EA's playbook.
  • Fu disney
  • geuss we'll never see a worthwhile star wars game ever again
  • Guys calm down and read this: “After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”
  • @73 If it comes to that I'm just gonna permanently go back to N64...
  • To all the people moaning about Disney cashing in and money etc, I think you all need to remember that the games industry is a BUSINESS and therefore will always make games and all gaming decisions based on money, there is not one entertainment franchise which will put fans before money and that is the way it has to be if you want to keep playing games and using this site. Disney aren't the enemy here (Nobody is moaning at them for their part in the Marvel film franchise), Lucas himself is to blame for poor decisions regarding Lucas Arts games in the past
  • @122 Thanks for fucking up the whole forum!!!
  • There was bound to be some fxcking truly terrible news to come out of this Disney/Star Wars sale. The death of Lucas Arts & The death of SW:1313 just had to be that news didn't? Tomorrow Disney will announce Star Wars Kinect 2 the top feature will be a song "La Bombad" a cover of Labomba sung by Jar Jar Binks & Cpt. Tarpals...
  • Battlefront 3!
  • i bet their going to release star wars stuff for disney infinite though..............
  • While this is a sad day for those losing their jobs, why is everyone so angry that their "beloved" Lucas Arts is no more? Lucas Arts has ruined the Star Wars game license a long time ago. People here keep listing great games they made and most, if not all, were made 10+ years ago. I can't think of a single game on current gen systems that was a commercial and critical success. Force Unleashed 1 & 2 were disappointing albeit slightly fun. Star Wars Kinect, well, need I say more? Old Republic was just WoW with a Star Wars coat of paint. No innovation or pushing boundaries. They wanted to capitalize on Wow's success, but were too afraid or shortsighted to try something new. This had the highest rating of all four here and wasn't it developed primarily by BioWare? Disney is a company and can't funnel money in ventures that won't recoup their costs and pleasant memories of games past can't keep a company afloat in today's economy. Yes, maybe they are thinking with their wallets by shutting down Lucas Arts, but would you rather they shut it down and never make another Star Wars game or license it out and we can get a broad vision of what other studios can do with the property? If Disney licenses games out one at a time and a studio pulls an Aliens: Colonial Marines debacle, they don't get to make another one. And if they license it out, think of how many great studios will fight for the chance to make a game. If Bethesda was given the opportunity to make KOTOR 3, would you still complain? If Epic made a TPS following Rebels and Stormtroopers, would that really be a bad thing? If Eidos made a Deus Ex: HR style game in the middle of Coruscant or Rockstar made a sandbox game, albeit toned down a bit. If they stumble and make licensing mistakes, would the really be any worse off than they are right now? Everyone was predicting the fall of Star Wars when it was bought by Disney and now they have an amazing writer and director attached to a new Star Wars film.
  • So I heard the new movie that Alec Guinness is gonna be brought back to life by Walt Disneys frozen head....should be good
  • Why are a 3rd of the comments half way off the page?
  • @136 Disney buying Star Wars really was the best thing for it, people are upset but will come round eventually
  • Disney you fucking idiots... and I bet the new star wars movies suck dick
  • I thought they would have made more Disney games, like we had back in the 90's. That means no Monkey Island 3 remake or any Indiana Jones games. Disney fuck you.
  • Fuck this. Fuck Disney. Fuck George Lucas.
  • This is horrible. I truly think I'm going to cry...
  • @132, not my fault their developers HTML code broke due to alot of $$$$.. their fault!!!
  • What a dick move. You have to wonder if Georgie boy knew this was in the cards when he signed over the franchise, and if not, what he thinks about this? I got an idea George! Take some of your newly acquired mega billions and help out your former employees now.
  • Fuck you Disney! lol
  • Fucking bunch of kiddy fiddlers. Star Wars should be the one thing least associated with children's entertainment. I just hope that if they say they will outsource it to other devs, maybe we could actually get a decent Star Wars game for once. Still very cunty though.
  • why close it down disney when you could've let lucaarts merge with you to still produce games under your company people anticipated for :'(
  • Fuck Disney thats all im saying I hope your star wars venture fails fucking miserably my parents grew up on the originals and I grew up on the re mastered versions....they are now dead and buried anything else is a total joke and embarrassment..get to fuck you whoring scumbags
  • @139 I agree. I was happy when I heard Star Wars was no longer in Lucas' control and a bit wary of Disney handling it. But, Disney hasn't screwed up Marvel since they bought it, so I have some faith. @140 Even IF the new movies suck, which we won't know until 2015, will they really be any worse than the Prequels that were made by Lucas?
  • Poor dudes. I guess all their current work just gets lost in the Disney vault no matter how far along it was. That shit's gotta sting.
  • "LucasArts is responsible for some of the most charished games in the history of the medium, starting with its classic adventure games of the late 80s and early 90s, including Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island." I'm sure you meant 'cherished' Lee.... :p
  • Wow, just wow. Do they realize how much money they could have made on consoles, especially with next-gen coming out this year. Knew from the start Disney taking star wars wasn't going to be good.
  • Bioware buckle-up.
  • Ha ha
  • damn why is this forum all mess up? i refresh several time to no avail. Anyways this is sad news. My favorite Star Wars game is Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire for Nintendo 64. Not the most popular game but very good. game is sadly overlooked and under rated due to being released on N64.
  • Dear disney, your the WORST POSSIBLE DEFINITION OF HUMAN BEINGS UNDER POLITICAL FIGURES, a good chunk of Star Wars fans.
  • Lucasarts may as well have been dead already. What was the last great game they put out? The Force Unleashed wasn't bad but remove the franchise and its nothing special. Before that... what, Monkey Island 3?
  • So is Disney challenging EA for the Worst Company in the World then. They've got my vote! Feel sorry for everyone who works there. 1313 looked fantastic as well.
  • Noooooooooooooo! Why Disney, why?!
  • Saddening, the games industry I knew and loved is dieing...
  • In addition to the great games we have heard about and were expecting... I was "hoping" they might re-release HD updates of "Full Throttle" and "Outlaws." I enjoyed those games on the PC, and was hoping for an XBLA (or GonD) version. I can't imagine what Disney is thinking!
  • Another piece of my childhood just died.
  • Wow indeed..
  • There goes my hope for a new Full Throttle I have been harboring deep within my heart
  • Wow guys... grab a drink or a beer and try to relax for a second. Is it possible that Disney has decided to focus all of their resources (Star Wars related anyway) towards their upcoming attempt at tackling the next closely watched trilogy, which is bound to have the most ridiculously outrageous expectations attached to it that any filmmaker has ever encountered before? I'm just saying. Lets just wait and see, and try our best to stay cautiously optimistic.
  • Considering Lucasarts hasn't put out anything other than Star Wars for like a decade, maybe this was a smart move.
  • With the shutting down of Lucas Arts, Start Wars 1313 can be revived elsewhere after it started dying a slow death.
  • *Cocks shotgun* Some little mouse b*stard is getting his head blown off.
  • I really wanted 1313, Disney why would you?
  • Never understand why Disney is not consider a monopole like Microsoft. They should not be allow to buy company anymore. They always take something good and scrap it... i include toy story 3 and the lion king 2 into the scraping part of my comment.
  • All I can say is "It's about time." Now if MS & 343 would be next the world would be a better place.
  • Disney is like a little rich girl using daddy's money to walk into all areas of life that are sweetly corrupt and to unjustly "purify" it with her annoying perfume and excessively pink clothing. There is simply no excuse and we might as well try and except that the moment Disney came into the picture..that Star Wars is dead and a thing of the past and that we shall remember all the more-than-great experiences we had, from Lucas and from games... R.I.P. STAR WARS
  • Disney is shutting down LucasArts. In related news, the Death Star just aimed its laser at Disney's headquarters.
  • This certainly does suck to hear, but let's be honest, LucasArts' titles have gone down hill in quality in recent years. I don't see this so much as Disney messing with the franchise, as I see it as plugging up a hole that was seeping money and pumping out sub-par games.
  • I must be the only one who's disappointed that we'll never receive any more remakes of their adventure games (particularly Grim Fandango). I couldn't care less about the Star Wars games. Truly disappointing news.
  • @177: Dude, I'm pretty sure Disney still holds the rights to the old Lucasarts adventures. They can outsource any number of them for remakes, if they find it profitable.
  • I always wondered why the display would get screwed-up (#122 and now, #168). Can't a moderator delete the posts of people who do that?! Better, still... how about someone patch the software so it truncates overly long words that are beyond a set number of characters!!
  • Why the fuck would Disney do that? It's so damn stupid. And all of the Star Wars games that had potential in the last 5 years have been canceled. God damn it!
  • You wont see me at disney land or world anytime soon...
  • Why WOULDN'T they? LucasArts has done nothing of worth in a long time nad is just a diseased appendage. Makes great business sense.
  • I understand the point some people make that they haven't done anything worth much lately, and that this is a good business decision. However in my opinion, that makes no damn sense! Didn't they already say they are going to make movies 7, 8, and 9? If that is true, making a game for each movie to milk pennies out of people seems like a wiser business decision then to close the studio down entirely... unless they plan on opening up their own game studio and hiring the same staff, that is the only logic I can think of. Let us be honest with each other though, with the dozen or so Star Wars games running around through the years, how many of them were actually quality games? KOTOR, Battlefront, the first Force Unleashed, and Republic Commando will be the the titles that live on forever for me.
  • Here is a thought, with Lucas Arts no longer making Star Wars games, I can't believe the Star Wars entity is gone in video games. Maybe they think they can make more money by selling the licence to other developers to make Star Wars games, let the bidding commence!
  • Fuc disney.
  • I love Disney, but fuck off Disney dafuq is wrong with you.
  • This is a very sad day. And for people who are stating that Lucas Arts was rubbish, I beg to differ. The Battlefront games were fantastic and they were working on the 3rd one which would have had full online multiplayer, along with making 1313. They also made the original Mercenaries game which was super fun, the Lego Indiana and Star Wars games and a large back catalogue of classics which a lot of people have fond memories of. (Go and compare this to what Disney Interactive have made, seriously what the fuck was Disney thinking?!?!? They can't make games for shit!!!) As much as SWTOR was not the huge success we were all hoping for, their work when it came to story telling in that game was impeccable, far beyond anything that WOW ever did with narrative. As a final note, even if a developer has produced fewer great titles over the years, why would you want to see them go? It does no damage to still have them exist and produce games. All this does is limit the amount of material on the market, and also postpone titles we were looking forward or even cancel them for good. I don't see how shutting down LucasArts could be a good thing in any way. I'm going to miss LucasArts, thank you for being such brilliant works and fond memories guys, I hope all those that have lost their jobs are okay and quickly get picked up by other developers because they are some talented people!
  • Disney are fucking morons 1313 was looking amazing
  • Wow they are destroying the just like they will destroy Star Wars. Lucas arts made some of my favourite games mainly Lego ones but that is besides the point.
  • @190: See. The Lego ones were made by TT-Games. KOTOR was made by Bioware. You have to go back at least 14 years to find a good and succesfull game made by LucasArts. I grew up with LucasArts and love them. But sooner or later even Lucas would have had to close the studio. Disney, beeing the big company is just a little quicker and mercyless in cutting and closing everything they don't need. The Clone Wars TV-Show and 3D-Releases are also canceld and Studios closed already.
  • If you strike them down they will come back more powerful than you can possibly imagine
  • @188 Ignoring your douchebag, arguably racist comments, you are aware that Star Wars is the biggest commercial success of all time?
  • Monkey Island was gash anyway!
  • So no more KOTOR? Well eff you too, Disney.
  • Walt Disney is secretly a Sith Lord that faked his death and is now set to ruin Lucas
  • i wonder if this is why North Korea's kicking off.
  • Everyone seems to be forgetting that they will still be licensing the SW IP to other developers to make Star Wars games, someone will buy 1313 and release it
  • @197 Have you heard of a full stop?
  • Well looks like the empire finally won! @197 a discriminating American calling British people stupid! Aw Shucks ive heard it all now! Go back to school fella!
  • They need to give Mickey mouse the role of the major villain in the new movies, with Donald Duck as his side-kick.
  • @197 the american government had to issue a statement saying mermaids arent real real because of program on the discovery channel.... and you call british people stupid lol shit, so no battlefront again either??
  • @191 nah,not 14 years.... Republic Commando was all LucasArts, and their last great developed game IMO(2005),and was quite a popular game
  • While at least 99% of Lucasarts' truly classic stuff was before The Phantom Menace* (both movie and PS1 game), this does mark another end of an era**. * Look at Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle & Zombies Ate My Neighbours (yes, that was developed by Lucasarts), and then look at Super Bombad Racing, that XBox Obi-Wan game & Kinect Star Wars. ** Sony Liverpool/Psygnosis is gone. Bizarre Creations is gone. Now Lucasarts is gone. What prime 1990s game developer is left?
  • We can still see remakes of classic LucasArts games - Disney can license them out.
  • LucasArts dropped 1313 and Battlefront 3. Disney will likely revive them.
  • wow fuck disney for that, now we will never see a battlefront 3 or the amazing looking 1313 :( if they ruin the films and the games Lucas will never live it down.
  • Fuck.. and everyone thinks EA is bad.. this is just.. wow.. fuck you Disney... 25yrs a gamer.. Lucas arts has always had a special place in my heart,, and now Disney kills them off.. just.. wow... Sad Day for gamers I hope everyone they fired finds work in a company that will value the skills they have or they set up their own and show Disney how fucking retarded they are.
  • Fuck Disney...period.
  • God Damn you Mickey and your tormenting laugh "ha ha ha". So now the company with a history of racism, anti-semitism, sexism, and long lines now include being a Star Wars assassin. Disney snuck in 2012 to buy Lusas and Star Wars and slowly put a knife in it's back...
  • Wow indeed, terrible decision from Disney.
  • Sad to hear all those people losing their jobs. On the plus side doesn't this free up the Star Wars universe for other developers ?
  • so from now on Disney will just hold on to their yearly Child movie based games and ohh yes their own kind of rip of game Disney Infinite.
  • I have always considered Disney top notch and all class but they lose a little respect with this. Big mistake, Disney. That's a whole lot of uber-talented guys and gals without jobs. Good luck to them.
  • @188 see its mumbo jumbo shit like that ,that makes the whole world hate USA ,damn bro kill that shit travel the world see it for yourself it's not like that
  • NOOOO!
  • All I can say is WOW!
  • The Empire couldn't stop Luke Skywalker The Sith couldn't stop Luke Skywalker Even George Lucas couldn't stop Luke Skywalker but a mouse ?
