Good News Australia - Fallout 3 Gets the Green Light

Good News Australia - Fallout 3 Gets the Green Light
Written Wednesday, August 13, 2008 by Dan Webb

Just the other week, post apocalyptic RPG title, Fallout 3 was refused classification by Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification board. The reason behind its refusal boiled down to the in-game drug system, which positively benefits players when certain substances are used. The board said that the system was too close to real life methods and prescriptions of drug usage and positively promoted drug usage.

Good news arose recently however as Bethesda went back to the drawing board and edited the Australian version of the game by toning down the drug references and making slight adjustments to its overall system. This was enough to keep the board happy and they granted Fallout 3 an MA 15+ rating accordingly.

So congrats Australia, you don't get to miss out on a potential game of the year. If you didn't read our preview from earlier on in the month, go read it now, it's a real treat.

How can beneficial drug usage be frowned upon? Unless using substances in the game makes you violent and encourages stealing car stereos to get another hit. If so, fair enough. No one seemed to mind the intravenous use of substances in Bioshock.

Good news for Australia, although the original denial of a rating sounds like BS to me. Sucks that Bethesda has to tone down their game, but I guess they'll do it for sales. And everybody gets to enjoy the game now.

Eh, I see this getting the GTA treatment and being pushed back to the full version.

Either way, it's good to see that Australia doesn't get entirely screwed once again. It's bad enough they get everything last. x_X;

What is wrong with the laws in Australia??? you can catch deadly crocodille, but not watch a little drug use in a videogame? taht sucks for those who wants the "real" game and not some toned down shit.

Guess i'll just import the game from overseas and run the risk of becoming a drug addict in the process. Damn Gaming Board make a R18+ Rating already.

Yup, shoot off those heads, but inject some health and you are crossing the line. We can't escape our horrible history by censoring everything....

At least the Aussie's will get the game, even if it's a toned down version. But it seems that their rating system is complete shit tbh.

wow... their rated "M" games allow 15+ whereas the US's rated "M" games only allow 17+.

The game is rated "M" for a reason. It shouldn't have to be "toned" down to make the "M" rating. Parents should be more responsible and know what their child is like. If he's (or she) is a little bit creative and likes to act stuff out they see on a video game or movie, than do NOT buy them an "M" rated game obviously. That's what killed Manhunt 2. They had to block everything out, which makes the game horrible now.

What's next...will they ban Fable 2 due to orgy and public indencency acts?

well if someone is that easily influenced by a video game and would do drugs just because a make believe simulation does then they have bigger problems and should be shunned from society. and apparently, the leaders of australia are those kinds of people

Anyway, this is great that AUS gets it. I really wanted to play it and already pre-ordered it. GOTY FTW!!

Well, you van't really cath one here, it's illegal. Unless you have a hunting licence, live out far into the bush, with lots of lagoon's and swamps, and you tell the cops first.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
