[Update 2]

VideoGamer has now reponded too, with a long post. Basically the outlet is saying, "We firmly deny any accusations of fabrication."

[Update] EA has responded to the rumours regarding the Dead Space series, with the following statement: "These rumours are patently false. While we have not released sales data for Dead Space 3, we are proud of the game and it continues to be an important IP to EA."

Does that mean the Dead Space franchise still has a future? Watch this space.

[Original Story] Despite being in the early stages of development, Dead Space 4 has been cancelled following the disappointing sales of Dead Space 3.

That’s according to a report published this morning, citing an anonymous source close to the unannounced project. Should it be true the revelation casts doubt over the future of the once-promising action horror series.

The source claims that Dead Space 4 was in production at developer Visceral Games, with a small team working on prototypes and potential narratives for the game.

However, following the failure of Dead Space 3 to live up to EA’s expectations, the publisher visited the studio last month to inform the team that work should stop.

In addition to this the source also provided some insight into the development of Dead Space 3 and none of it reflects well on EA.

Apparently the game endured several budget cuts and at one point was almost cancelled. What’s more the publisher is said to have ordered Visceral to change the ammo system in the game to allow for a microtransaction implementation.

Dead Space 3’s microtransactions would go on to cause quite a stir, generating ill-will for the title before it was even released.

The source claims that Dead Space 3 was to feature a weapon-specific ammo system, but it made a potential microtransaction system cumbersome, so generic ammo was introduced instead.

During development and post-release much of the discussion around Dead Space 3 centered on the game’s continuing shift towards all-out action and away from the series’ creepy horror.

According to the source this was a publisher-led decision, as EA wanted the game to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. The studio was reportedly told to make Dead Space 3 feel more like Mass Effect.

Unfortunately for both EA and Visceral, Dead Space 3’s shift wasn’t enough to secure the future of the series. Launched last month first week sales were down 26.6 per cent on those of Dead Space 2.

It has slid pretty quickly down the UK charts too, suggesting that sales are dropping pretty sharply.

EA has yet to comment.

  • Probably because their Microtransaction plan didn't go as well as they had hoped.
  • I don't know how to feel about this news... :(
  • Haven't played it yet, but this new game barely looks like a Dead Space game to me.
  • When will the suits stop interfering with the creatives? They can only ruin things.
  • Maybe its also because of the cost of the game its £59.99 on the playstation store and £53 in blockbuster. I'm pretty sure this will happen to all their series if they go ahead with this micro transactions in all their games. Despite what they think it is the opposite of what 99% of gamers wamt.
  • That´s what happens when you take a Survival Horror game and turn it in to a TPS.. I´m so glad to hear this!! :)
  • I didnt buy it because of the micro-transactions, i strongly believe EA ruin games, they ruined Bioware, Mass Effect 2+3 as well as Dragon Age 2 sucked so much. Im glad they are losing money.
  • Good, a proper boot in the ass to EA. Their money-grubbing seemed to have screwed up a decent franchise.
  • I would say one reason for the lack of sales is because of their ad campaign. Remember the dead space 2 commercials scaring people's moms?
  • Great news. Dead Space 1 and 2 were great... fantastic even. And while Dead Space 3 was not a bad game, it was a huge step backwards. Rather than see the series continue going downhill, it's a good idea to end the game on a trilogy and allow Visceral to move onto something new. It would be wise for Crysis to follow suit.
  • The ironic thing of course being that call the changes that EA wanted implemented to boost sales where the things that turned people off and lead to the disappointing sales. Whoops!
  • I'm glad this series is down the pan, shows that survival horror can outsell a shooter. It's tiresome that every single game gets changed into a gears of war clone because it sold well. All this is because resident evil 4 was so good yet no one seems to be able to replicate that in a horror. Resident evil has been ruined and now dead space. What's next? A first person shooter slender man? In which you pay via micro transactions to get extra time before he gets you?
  • Damn. Didn't realise sales were down that much. DS3 may have more action than DS & DS2 but it's still a great game. While i don't like micro-transactions they were implemented in a really non intrusive way that didn't detract from the game. (and made them completely unneeded) Big respect to Visceral from me for managing to put out such a good game while under the thumb of EA. Bioware should be learning from them, not the other way around.
  • It's EA's actions that lead to this, but they still try to shift the blame...Will they ever learn?
  • Yo EA, how many more game franchises are you going to butcher with your profit-hungry claws? You destroyed Dead Space and ruined Mass Effect. What else are you going to run into the ground? The news is out about Dead Space 3 and how you forced Visceral Games to adapt the game to allow for easier microtransactions. And now Dead Space 4 is cancelled because Dead Space 3 didn't sell enough? Figures. I mean Activision has it bad with their yearly cawadooty rehashes but you take underhanded tactics to the next level. EA Games: Ruin Everything
  • The weapon crafting was passable, but unnecessary. My biggest gripe with the game was the uninspired, claustrophobic level design that had not only similar looking areas but identical assets and layouts as well. It's a shame suits don't know what makes a game a hit. Viceral has very talented people, but EA is sure to snuff out their spark eventually.
  • Do you think EA will learn a lesson from this? I don't. I can imagine the meeting going something like this "so dead space 3 hasn't done too well? I guess we didn't make it generic enough" "it's odd cause gamers love microtransactions so this should have sold loads", "well we surely can't return to what made the series a success" "lets can it"
  • @15 Dead space had on good entry, that was the first. It was something really good then 2 was poor, cheap scares and enemies dropping down in front of you. I love survival horror but that game bored me. That's EAs fault and hopefully that dev will split from them and go back to what we want. Dead space had massive potential but was ruined.
  • Well, congrats to all of the idiots who cried about the game having MTs. Now we may never see DS4.
  • *Slow clap* Well done EA, you screwed the pooch just as well as Capcom did with Resi...
  • The hell are you fools talking about? Dead Space 3 was hardly a failure, it was a great game and never for a single second did it bore me, it was a step in the RIGHT direction, co-op was fun and different and no MP, micro transactions didn't effect my game in anyway, it's called ignoring it, so quit bitching about something you can barely notice. To the people who didn't buy this game: i hope your happy.
  • You want to know who ruined this game? You people. The microtransactions were completely optional, in fact not even needed at all. The developers left loop holes in the game to make harvesting items easy. If you choose to spend money, it becomes easier, and quicker. But people who choose to boycott a game because of ego enraged stupidity, are killing it for the rest of us (I did not need to spend additional money to complete the game, however appreciate any options that come my way). I played this game on single player, it is a great experience, helping me relive my Dead Space glory. Now I'll admit the co-op does take some of the "horror" out of it, but it is still a ton of fun to play with someone. Get your heads out of your asses people. Games of the future will have post launch DLC, and games will have microtransactions. This is a dark day for me as a fan of this series.
  • @23 You are clearly a shooter fan and not a horror fan. Co op does not belong in horror.
  • But but but it was the most downloaded demo like EVER and pre orders were up and the micro transactions were fully embraced and appreciated......good fucking riddance, keep a watch for the next destroyed franchise to be shelved
  • finally something good done by ea
  • I havnt bought this game. despite loving the last two. everything ive heard tarnishes its reputation
  • @27 putting spoilers doesn't give u right to do that, you are an arse. I did eventually plan on playing this. Arse. How about I tell u ending to tomb raider? Put spoiler then tell u ending?
  • Hate it when the big guys "think" they know best. Loved DS1, looked at DS2 but with the multiplayer bolt on i avoided and it'll be the same with DS3. If EA do the same with say Battlefield I'll be pissed.
  • Did anyone else find the issue with the series becoming less scary was due to not enough change as opposed to having too much? (eg co-op, more action oriented) I mean a necromorph can only jump out of a vent or spawn behind you so many times before it no longer effects you. I was over this by Chapter 3 of the first game. Either way this is still really crap news as I really enjoyed the series
  • this is good news because now they can get to work on dante's inferno 2.
  • Quick to dislike you idiot trolls, I don't read things after people say spoilers. I only said the thing later to remind people who HAVE finished the game.. and to discuss
  • Finally. It's best to go out well than bad, so they should have ended the series with the first game.
  • Until EA realise that taking an unbroken formula, then pillaging it for what its worth by turning it into (pardon the pun) a freak show by means of transactions, then I am afraid most IP's they pick up will be ruined. It's got to be almost time boycott EA for their persistent exploitation of gamers. I'll start by having my photo taken outside their Guildford office with my trousers down and a sign saying "I'm not dropping these for you anymore" (or words to that effect)
  • This has nothing to do with people angsting about microtransactions. While I don't personally own the game (for those eager to check my profile and call me out), from what I've observed (and the demo), it's just a mediocre action game parading as Dead Space. It's not bad, but it's definitely not what made the original a success. At least Capcom's rationale was because RE4, which was action oriented, WAS a success (as were clones of its formula, like Dead Space). Obviously that's not what stopped people from buying it though. Fans of the original probably didn't get it solely because it's a different game from what they wanted. People may not have liked the demo. EA's DLC concept in general. And let's not forget, it's only been out ONE MONTH. Some people probably just didn't have the money yet, due to other games. Or didn't get around to it yet. I wish I understood why companies just give up after 1 month and decide a game is a failure. They DO realize that not everyone is going to buy or CAN buy in the first 30 days, right? The good news is that this means people won't all stand for EA's shit. The bad news is that EA won't understand that this means people don't like their changes and that they should've been happy with the steady 2 million the series generated and that fans wanted horror to be the focus. Even Capcom knows that bad sales means it is something wrong on their part. @#25 - Be that as it may, he's right. You can ignore the multiplayer. Even moreso than RE5/6.
  • @34 If there is no way to block out what your spoiler is then you shouldn't post it. The game is only a month old and some people haven't got around to it. Some people can skim through comments and accidentally read it. But hey you don't care do ya?
  • @24, no, people who loved this series didn't ruin it, people who made the changes, they ruined it. You say that the future is micro transaction? Can't you see how much of a bad thing that is? Paying for a full game, then (for now optional) having to buy in micro transactions. How long before its a necessity to purchase through micro transactions? There'll be a point in the next decade or two where video games companies will crash. It's happened once before in the wooden age of gaming, and it'll happen again. When that happens, we'll see new consoles and new companies grow, and these money hungry ass's fall. There is only so long a publisher of anything can abuse it's customers and developers.
  • If you just let creative people be creative they'll make something special. When you make decisions based on making more money, it's incredibly transparent and smart consumers see right through it. I'm sort of easy to scare as I don't play much horror games. Dead Space 1 and 2 I was always just walking through the game slowly. Dead Space 3 I was comfortable running through it and stopping when I reached "the next wave of enemies". It's shitty to see developers being told to make something different than what they want. You have a Mass Effect game already, you don't need two. Dead Space is meant to be your 'horror' market, EA. You've got sports, you've got FPS with Battlefield, you have action with Mass Effect. Dead Space is your horror. And now Visceral cop the consequences because of your decisions, EA.
  • @30 You could have just denied it...
  • Its a shame EA probably wont take anything away from this. They are refusing to admit that they are wrong about microtransactions. DS3 should be proof that they dont work in full price titles and that gamers wont fall for their bullshit. If DS3 didnt wrap up the story (havent gotten around to buying it second hand on ebay yet) then i probably dont want to continue with the franchise. I dont think EA will ever be able to admit they were wrong so im sure DS4 would have been even more action orientated than DS3 and it would have done even worse.
  • This is what happens when u try to force stupid MP Into a SP horror title. They ran off the original fans me being one. I bought the first two day one, and as soon as they announced micro transactions, and Co Op I was done.
  • This is worrying news. I would rate the first 2 Dead Space games as probably my favourite games of all that I have played (and I’ve played over 200 on the current 360 console!). However, DS3 is lacking at times and there are only a couple of moments in which it feels like a true DS game (namely the regenerating necromorphs, which always raise the blood pressure just slightly!). I have completed the game 5 times, including once in co-op, and though I enjoyed it in co-op, I enjoyed it for the fun of the banter between myself and my friend as it just felt like a good action game romp rather than a proper DS game. I was saying on these very forums before the games release that co-op would diminish the tension of the first two games and that the inclusion of universal ammo would mean not being forced to change weapons when you least wanted to, and I was absolutely right. The inclusion of human enemies, whilst making sense to the story, does completely remove all tension, though the ability to roll adds nothing as there is only one point where I found it useful. Weapon crafting is fun, though not in co-op as waiting for 10 minutes for your co-op partner to experiment with poorly designed weapons is absolutely boring, and so for co-op the ability to craft weapons should have been left out. With at least 10 achievements and, more significantly, parts of the story only being only available if the game is played in co-op, I think many people felt like they were being shut out from the full game (myself included), and so I am not surprised that in protest some people have chosen to boycott the game upon release, either choosing to buy the game when the price is reduced or not buying it at all. It just goes to show that meddling in the popular format of a game (a format that made the game successful in the first place) with a view to broadening its appeal, can have completely backfire and in fact end up alienating those fans that made the franchise successful in the first place. I hope that there will be a DS4, but also hope that it returns to its roots as in my opinion that is where success for the franchise lies.
  • Maybe it's meant to be. I mean, storywise, where do you go after Dead Space 3? If you've seen the story for the 3rd play out, you'll know what I mean.
  • Just fuck off EA.
  • If it ain't broke don't fix it. I sense there may be servers closing even sooner than usual.
  • This makes me sick, and all the people who pretend to be fans, yet never gave 3 a chance, pathetic.Too few are realizing how much crwp this means. Name any other succesfull console survival horror, with a future, and ill consider being "wrong", but for me, this was it. Regardless of how good it was, it was leagues better than any other in its genre, because its genre is dying. Rather than go back to its roots, this game dies, and who knows when or if another truly great one will come along to replace it. Honestly, between "gamers" making freaking call of duty out sell everything else, and pubs like EA trying to emulate them, I'm about done with the gaming industry as a whole. It was one thing when mainstream games came in, but there were always still those gold nuggets mixed in for us real gamers. Now... What's the point? This is just depressing. Hope you guys enjoy your next 12 call of duty games.
  • EA killed it, just like we knew they would. It's sad but if this had been a massive hit you'd find that EA would churn out a 'Generic' Dead Space every year. So the series was doomed before it even had a chance. Maybe one day in the future when EA lets go of it a new developer will bring it back to its roots.
  • Wasn't it Cliff Bleszinski that recently said a horror game won't sell and that's why we wouldn't get more games like Dead Space 1 and 2? They would be more action orientated because the market dictates that kind of game being made. Looks like another thing he got right.
  • I hope someday EA goes out of business for there stupidity. The gaming industry is being ruined by them, slowly, but surely.
  • I just traded in DS3. I 1000G-ed it. It's not exactly bad, I liked it, but compared to DS1 the atmosphere is obviously not right. I could hardly feel the scariness and nervousnes I enjoyed while playing DS1. EA was sure shooting is what gamers want, and ruined the series with packing it with more actions. Now, it said because of poor sales that it would cancel the entire series. EA should realize that it was not the fault of the series, but its bad player preference anticipation. I'm sure if it returns the series to its original state, sales will boost again. I do hope EA will reconsider making DS4.
  • It wasn't Micro-transactions that killed this off... it was the me-too TPS shooter vibe, pandering to the lowest common denominator. They can't make every game a TPS/FPS.
  • Bacon
  • good news.
  • You can't expect something to be a sure bet if you change what made it great.
  • EA is stupid to bring coop and less horror in first place so it is mean ruined Dead Space 3 then now they want cancelled for next series. FUCK YOU EA!!! Dead Space 4 is must coming in future. Single-player only, full Survival Horror and better story!!! Come on, EA!!
  • I like the series. Shame on you, EA!
  • Leave it to EA to FUCK UP a good series - Fuck off EA and let them make Dead Space 4 like they want
  • Shame. Dead Space 3 was a pretty good game, the least good of the three but still with its merits. It's downfall wasn't any of the new additions but the clearly padded length (Identical optional mission layouts, back tracking in the temple to rearrange columns), some momentum killers, STILL having enemies spawn in identical places every playthrough really negates the horror/surprise/fun/etc. and a lack of any GREAT moments on disc 2. Heard DS3 needed to sell *5 million* to break even and I'm pretty sure the previous 2 have only sold about 3 million each. Sounds like EA allowed the budget to spiral out of control as I doubt they'd expect the numbers to jump by 66% despite advertising the game less than DS2.
  • Hopefully this is a lesson to other companies with micro transactions. DLC is getting milked too much already with games in general lately but micro transactions just crosses the line imo.
  • Because EA turned it into a "decent" action game! Fuck EA, for apparently canceling one of my favorite new series and having it go out with a whimper rather than bang.
  • im very glad that others besides myself stayed the course and did not purchase this game. i was looking forward to this game untill the micro$ news hit, then the demo droped and i knew i would not be buying this title.(the flood!) i also never once felt scared of anything while playing this franchises first games.did i did think they were excellent third person sci fi shooters, thats it.not ever scary.
  • Bad news, im a dead space fan and to be honest im gutted, loved dead space 3. hopefully they put this behind them and go back to making dead space how ti should be made, not trying to make it into something its not. DAMMM DIRTY EA!!!
  • I have to admit Dead Space 3 was not making a good impression on me, It was more like the first lost planet game in the snow the whole time.
  • There we go, EA fucking everything up again, EA needs to bugger off they ruin damn near everything they touch because they're money hungry morons. They single handedly ruined DS3 and ME3, can't wait to see what great promising company they ruin next.
  • Like 67 said: There goes EA fucking up everything again... Why couldn't they just leave it alone?
  • well this really sucks, I like Dead Space, but this doesn't surprise me. EA doesn't give a damn about anything or anyone except money and Benjamin Franklin. Dead Space 3 doesn't sell well so the kill off 4. After they nearly ruined 3 by forcing Visceral to add stupid transactions as another attempt to milk the consumer, then they force them to make it feel more like Mass Effect which they forced Bioware to make feel more like Gears of War. I don't know why they haven't cancelled the Need For Speed series yet then, if they're concerned about sells. I love NFS, but for the last 5 years, with the exception of Hot Pursuit in 2010, Need For Speed has sucked, and hasn't sold well at all either. EA sucks man, worst game company on the planet, followed by Activision and Ubisoft. I'm sure now EA will force Visceral to make some new FPS game.
  • imagine if EA went bankrupt and dead space was brought by fucktivision and became call of duty in space with monsters
  • First RE now Dead Space, why do companys keep killing these franchises because they wasnt more action and get away from the roots, i liked dead space 3, loved the first 2. Just liek RE you get away from your horror roots and you get watered down action junk.
  • why do EA get to live when THQ die credit THQ for being nicer than fuckertronic arse capcom are getting like EA with those dlc stuff
  • @25 No shit there buddy, if people were awarded medals for pointing out the obvious then you would have one medal right now. But then again did you play DS3? Is the survival mode not survival enough for you? Is hardcore mode not horror enough for you? Is classic mode not SP enough for you?
  • Good. Screw microtransactions. And screw EA.
  • @51: Apart from DS3 selling less than the previous, ahem, "rental material" then yeah, totally right. Still a dick though.
  • why are people bitching about the micro transactioning? its hilarious, even dead space 1 had stuff you could buy to improve your character, where was all your bitching and moaning back then?
  • @23 So because I did not buy this game it is somehow my fault?! Please enlighten me with your wisdom...So if I don't go and buy another game because I don't know; it's crap, not to my taste, too expensive or perhaps I'm skint that month I'll somehow be responsible for it not selling well? @24 so it's the fault of 'you people' is it? You completely miss the point like so many seem to be... Yes we understand that microtransactions are optional, we genuinly do but we are completely against it! This game costs what £40 to £50 in the UK depending on where you buy it?! They tend to make levelling up, etc so painfully slow in these games purely so people give in and spend some money to unlock something quicker, etc. (Mass Effect 3 co-op I'm looking at you). Out of principle I am well within my right to decide that actually I will not be handing over my money to these guys because I don't like their methods, pricing, microtransactions or whatever my gripe might be. That my friend is called being a savvy consumer and if more people did the same these companies would realise that the gaming community as a whole won't stand for it. What is more powerful than speaking with your wallet or lack of. Oh and 'ego enraged stupidity'...seriously pal you don't know me or most people on this forum for that matter but it's nice to know you've created an opinion of everyone who boycotted the game you're obviously a fan boy over. For the record there were several factors as to why I did not purchase this game, microtransactions being just one of them albeit one that I myself and many others feel strongly about. x
  • Disappointing that they will shut down the series potentially but fuck you EA you greedy pricks. Make Dead Space feel more like Mass Effect? Publishers like EA have no idea nor do they care about the fans only their profit margins
  • @77 Did you just put a kiss at the bottom of your comment? @75 I agree, I was being sarcastic - sorry. He got it wrong again which was my point, he seems to be making a living at the moment just winding up gamers and saying that EA's policies are right because they are a business and need to make money. Obviously in this case they got it all wrong.
  • That's a shame. I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the series over the years, and I'm disappointed it seems to be going on hiatus for a while. Maybe a more survival-horror-y reboot on next-gen consoles would be a better move for the franchise. I'm sure it will be brought back at some point (it is a pretty lucrative IP overall), but it may be a few years before we see it.
  • EA fuck off already.
  • @77 One mans happiness is another mans misery, i can't hold individuals accountable for what happens, yes EA are the devil incarnate, yes micro-transactions is a digital mugging, BUT here is a news flash, micro-transactions aren't going to disappear over night, in fact they are going to be everywhere soon enough so get used to it, I will continue to ignore them but have a odd appreciation that the optional is available, like a nod from the devs. If you feel so strongly against it then go talk to a wall.
  • Any one of you that didn't support the third entry in the series has no right to complain about this whatsoever. The 4th game was cancelled due to poor sales. That translates to the game being canned because of the idiots that refused to give it a chance because of the co-op and microtransactions. Both of which were completely optional. I've been a fan of this series since day one. I own all three. I loved the third. It wasn't perfect. But it was by no means "ruined" because of the inclusion of microtransactions and co-op. I didn't buy a single resource pack with points. I used in game means. And I absolutely loved the co-op. Contrary to popular belief. This news has nothing to do with EA. And everything to do with the morons that bailed on the franchise. You people should all be slapped.
  • It's EA's fault the game failed, not the series'
  • I am happy about this. I love all DS (well except for the Wii title and that hacking arcade game) but it has to end and the ending was acceptable. If it wasn't for the after credit scene it would have been perfect.
  • God I hate EA, Dead Space has been my favourite series in the past few years but EA completely ruined it, it's not visceral's fault! I love DS3 by the way, i think it's better than the second game, so i'm not bitching about how DS3 sucks, it's a good game.
  • So apparantly, because a game is no longer scary it's no longer considered fun? What a great argument people put up as a reason to not purchase a game. If your a real fan of the franchise, you will purchase the game regardless of how it has changed. If you want the company to continue creating great games based on a franchise that you enjoy, you will buy the game and support because in reality, you are feeding the developers and paying for there life to live and to be able to continue to make the games you like to play. Dead Space 3 was an amazing game and the co-op added to the story more and made it more fun to play with friends. Co-op always make every game more fun.
  • I used to defend EA but it's getting incredibly difficult
  • Good. You took a great horror franchise and ruined it a la Resident Evil by trying to appeal to the masses, and then to add insult to injury, you sprinkle bullshit microtransactions on top. Fortunately, I doubt this will result in layoffs at Visceral Games. I mean, MoH: Warfighter bombed hard and I don't recall hearing about any layoffs at Danger Close.
  • Man, when did EA become worse than Activision?
  • I dont get how people say the resident evil games after 4 suck. Thats not true. The only dead space that was good was the first. I played it beat it left it alone and then i got into it for no reason amd i must have played it over and over with no bore affect at all. But #2 forget it. Once o fought them damb things that hide i got way to agrravated to play. I wanna play a game for fun not to stress out . To be honest i bought resident evil 6 and i dont regret it .one of the best buys i got from the mega sale. Thats a good game .. dead space 3 just sucked. If ea think these micro transactions are going to pull in massive bank they really need to pull there heads out there asses and see that people wont buy the games if they have to pay more than 60 bucks to enjoy a game .
  • @79 I certainly did my friend, I find that leaving a kiss can defuse nearly any situation @82 I think you're spot on with that, they will pop up in other games that's for sure and then there will be a decision to make, as I dare say some games I'm chomping at the bit to play will include them. There's a massive wall on the side of my flat so I'm just gonna pop out and give it what's for. For the record there were other reasons I did not buy this game like so many other games I pass up on over the years. The first and most important reason being that my friends who had played the game and whose opinions I respect and trust did not like it.
  • Good thing people voted with their wallets. We need more of this to start happening. Gamers shouldn't put up with money grubbing schemes that fucks them over. Some of the interviews from developers were cringe worthy. Maybe they were forced by EA, but what was said definitely didn't reflect well on Visceral. Power to the people, not the suits.
  • Typical...i believed this is why Mass Effect 3 was so bad storywise as well. Big company comes in says make a great game with as little money and resources as possible, then gets upset and wants to shut everything down when sales dont meet expectations. Oh yeah...and microtrasactions are stupid, greed is very bad. Stick to sports games, Need for Speed and Battlefield EA, leave the little developers alone and let them continue to make awesome games, there is no need for your input
  • "The studio was reportedly told to make Dead Space 3 feel more like Mass Effect." And theres your problem EA. Let Dead Space be the great survival horror game it is! Not everything has to be your billion dollar cash cow. The beauty of Dead Space was in its perfection as current gen survival horror. When you start messing with the basics of what makes Dead Space great, of course its not going to sell as well. If I had a batch of bruised apples, I could still sell them to those who wanted it and make a good amount of money on them, but if I dip them all in Paint beforehand so they look like all the good apples, no one is going to want them!
  • For all those that say that the franchise died because of the people that refuse to play DS3 because of the microtransactions instead of just ignore them all together, do you realize that the fact that you play the game ignoring the microtransactions contributed to the less than 5 millions profit EA espected? The dead space franchise was doomed the moment they decided to put microtransactions; they'd already decided by then that the estimated revenue had to be higher than a non microtransaction oriented game. So yes. Fuck EA.
  • @87 Whether or not you're a fan of a series is irrelevant. Some people don't like a lot of action in what WAS a "Survival Horror" game, it just does not belong. and a REAL fan STOPS buying their favorite game at some point to make the point of, "Hey EA, you fucked up. Thanks for ruining my favorite series. -My ass is no longer for the taking, _________"The point of the matter was that EA Fucked up by adding Co-op, Micro-transactions and made the game more action-y. Yea, i still bought DS3, but it's because my cousin and I wanted to play co-op together after we beat the game and I have to admit, the Co-Op was worth it because of the witty conversations between Clark and Carver. Micro-transactions aren't fit to be in a $60 game, but I ignored them, it wasn't hard to do, that and the game wasn't scary. DS3 didn't have the overbearing sense of fear and dread CONSTANTLY breathing down your neck like DS1 did. /rant
  • EA: its in the game, then it was EA: it isnt in the game. Now its EA: we've fucked are games.
  • Dang this is terrible news as the dead space series has been amazing and they shouldn't just leave us on a cliffhanger ending, anyone that has traded this in already is completely thick as there is DLC coming out for the game this month called awakened so technically you haven't got 100% on dead space 3. MAKE MORE DEAD SPACE ITS AWESOME
  • @92 Its great and all that you got friends whose opinions you respect but sometimes you gotta form your own opinions, relying on what others say may cost you a good time, you just gotta take the first step. Your friends didn't enjoy it? then borrow a copy for a night and find out for yourself. It's a better option than 99% of the posts here.
  • @92 I hear ya mate, I am all about forming my own opinion but when you work full time, have a pile of games to catch up on (Arkham City is still in the shrink wrap!) it looks like it will be one of those games that got away. No intention to be argumentative...internet forums bring out the worst in people and a lot of people feel passionately about this. Can you imagine the hell that will be unleashed when microsoft unveil the new xbox and the specs turn out to be not that great or you need a permanent internet connection!!! Take it easy x
  • I'm glad, the series went from a legitimately scary survival horror to a lackluster TPS, I remember playing the demo of DS3 and being pissed about it. Developers these days need to stop catering to large crowds and focus on a target audience. Games like Dead Space and Mass Effect for example turned into generic shooters simply because they wanted to atract more people for higher sales.
  • Say no to Microtransaction.
  • Probably for the best. I can't see the how the series could improve anymore anyway.
  • @101 I hear you, i work full time as well yknow, plus taking care of my old man, i nab games but never get round to it, it can't be helped and oddly enough this is the first time I've angrily wrote on a forum, just disappointed to read this article but not sure who to point the blame finger at. As for the new Xbox, who cares? i'll be glad just to hear about it. @102 Nice one you toolbox.
  • Thanks EA. Yet another game and IP they have ruined. I really wish developers would stop using EA as a publisher.
  • EA is the kiss of death to the greatest video game franchises. Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Dead Space - they are the Great Destroyer of IPs.
  • An unknown source says a lot of shit about EA and immediately we are supposed to think this is 100% true. While some or all of this might be true, the fact is EA has all rights to make them change whatever to help sell more copies. After all, its their money that's being used to make the game. Again, I have no problem with microtransactions since I'm not going to buy anything through it anyway, and I will one day get around to playing this because I love the series, like the demo, and my friends say they liked it as well.
  • So, basically, those greedy bastards ruined a great game by dragging it away from its roots, and they stop the series because their now shitty game didn't sell as much as they wanted?
  • Just posting to say that @27 should be banned from ever commenting on any article again if he's going to be a rude disrespectful asshole to those who haven't beaten the game yet. Was skimming through and saw his comment.
  • @108 We all hope its true, as EA deserved to fail on this one.
  • You know...I was once offered a possible job with them... I turned it down. And they continue to prove why.
  • I will still never understand to this day why people consider the first Dead Space game as a horror game. None of the games were ever scary since all they do is the whole jump scare tactic, which is NOT horror. I started playing Dead Space because I enjoyed it. I thought it was fun. Not because I thought it was so scary or any kind of survival game, which it wasn't. In fact, the first time that necro at the beginning of the first game got crushed by the elevator door, it was no longer ever close to scary. Because at that moment the game was hilarious. I have 100% on Dead Space 1,2, and 3, and I can say that I was not disappointed by any of them. But the so called "True Fans" are so quick to say that anyone who enjoyed the 3rd game only likes shooters and not horror, just because they can't get over the fact that they are chicken shits who were scared of the first game.
  • It just shows that people who play mobile games are more than happy to pay microtransactions, but on a console we pay £40 for quality and a proper game! Dont want any of this or F2P to tarnish my gaming experiences. That bullshit needs to stay on mobile devices only!
  • EA wants a CoD to call their own, and they don't care how many franchises they have to ruin until we give it to them.
  • To all of the idiots in the comments who are applauding this, you're essentially applauding the death of yet another franchise. This is the attitude that will eventually leave us with nothing but Call of Duty games and Call of Duty clones to play. Losing a solid franchise like this isn't good for gamers in any way. Keep clapping sheep, keep clapping.
  • I hope this isnt true I really want a DS4
  • Typical EA. This is why I boycott them. They change all the good things about the past 2 games, they then add a load of shit to Dead space 3 and the game sells badly. So, instead of admitting there mistake and going back to what it was they plan to just cancel the entire series. LolEA
  • So what was this about gamers WANTING micro-transactions and WANTING an action game and WANTING a a co-op experience. I think this proves how ignorant some of the publishers really are to their customer base.
  • They haven't even given DS3 enough time for it to make big sales. Jesus EA. I want DS4. DS3 is really a great game.
  • I know I'm going to set slaughtered for this, but I'm actually glad. To many series are dragged on and on and on just for profit. If dead space 3 DLC adds to the story at the end then I'm happy to wrap things up and remember dead space as a great trilogy of games.
  • Not buying an EA game with the exception of Battlefield 4 ever again, sick of micro transactions and server cuts.
  • Hate on me if you want, but I actually found Dead Space 3 more enjoyable for my taste. DS1 was really creepy but I wanted more than just running through dark areas. DS2 got better but still was same thing just different locations. DS3 while the story sometimes was lacking was fun to me. I never used the cover system and I liked how I rarely had to look for ammo and never had to try and balance my storage with health and ammo with fear of running out. I don't have time anymore to play games like that and want fun instant action. I used the micro transactions for supplies to craft things, and I even bought one of the suit and gun packs and bot upgrade. If I am paying for a game why not give me the option to enjoy it the way I want to without affecting the story? So for me DS3 pulled me back into the franchise and if they stayed on the same track I would have pre ordered DS4. I feel bad more for the devs than anything.
  • Maybe if they hadn't tried giving into the little cry babies who complain the game is too hard and want instant power weapons and kept it true to the series instead of turning it into another shooter then maybe more people, the people who made the franchise popular would have picked it up.
  • That's too bad. I love all the dead space games and would of purchased DS4 on day one. This franchise deserves to stay! You can add me to the 'never buy anything from EA again' list. Go microtrans-fuck yourself!
  • Shame, I really liked the series a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if mass effect, crysis, army of two and all of EA's shooters fail eventually and they cancel them all due to sales. Wish the people working at EA let the devs do what they want instead of interfering to just make more money, There would be a lot more original games and a lot more great games out there.
  • Okay I'm starting to see claims that this rumor is false. EA has commented that they haven't released sales figures for Dead Space 3 and that the IP remains important to them. Also Visceral is denying this rumor on Twitter.
  • HAHAHAHA...good. They should have let it die after DS 2. The first DS was the best.
  • Im shocked at the retards on these comments, the microtransactions didn't ruin DS3 it was the shift from survival horror - those of you who didn't find any problem with this game are part of the "wider audience" EA was trying to reach - the dumb down crowd who just was to button mash and drool and play games without having to think or plan ahead
  • JUST LIKE HOW THEY DESTROYED BIOWARE FUCK YOU EA I HOPE ALL THE EA BIGWIGS FAMILIES GET BAD ILLNESSES.
  • EA are just shooting themselves in the foot. We as consumers, have obviously done our talking with our wallets and it has hit their sales. Hopefully it will make them rethink their 'micro-transactions' plans for future game releases. When are they going to realise that we won't stand for being ripped off?
  • they shouldn't cancel dead space 4 continue it I want to see what happens to Isaac since he is still alive
  • Well honestly Dead Space 4 would have to be way different than 3, If they made it more like 2 with no co-op, micro transactions it could be a great game that sells well.
  • GameSpot posted in their article on this that EA responded by calling the report false. They didn't out and out say that DS4 wasn't cancelled, but note that the original report to VideoGamer came from an unnamed source so...take it for what you will. This is one instance where I actually believe EA...it makes no sense monetarily to close shop on of their flagship franchises, especially one that comes from an in-house development studio.
  • This EA's usual MO. Whenever you hear that phrase "appeal to a broader audience", you know that series you once loved is doomed. EA's job as a publisher is to fund and market the game. That's it, stop ordering the developers around and let them make the game they want. DS3 didn't get the sales EA was looking for because it's barely Dead Space. I would have gladly bought this game day 1 if it played like the previous games, but the demo showed it was just a generic TPS starring Issac Clarke. The epitome of EA's stupidity is Medal of Honor: Warfighter. Why does that game even exist? It contributes nothing of value to the sub-genre it belongs to, which is dominated by COD and BF. If the game had its own identity, instead of running around as a poor man's BF or COD, maybe it could have succeeded.
  • Glad to hear that my dead space 3 boycotting meant something! EA has noone to blame but themselves. If they would have kept the game closer to 1 and 2 they probably would have made better sales. All they did was piss off the majority or their series long fanbase. A friend got it so I borrowed their copy and the game is garbage I got scared maybe twice. It ruins the terror of the game when you KNOW there will be a nerco swarm in each and every room. Too much action,
  • Wouldn't surprise me if this was a hoax. Considering how many people hate EA I wouldn't put it past someone to create a false story just to get even more anger stirred towards EA.
  • EA literally does ruin every franchise and developer it touches. Without exception. Maybe not immediately, but they get the job done in the end. And I agree with whoever said it, there's no way the people responsible will realise that they're the cause of DS3's failure. They'll just keep ploughing ahead, ruining more games. Like interfering TV network executives. I enjoyed Dead Space 3, and I thought the co-op was fun. But the story lacked depth, and really lacked quite a bit of sense too. The tone was totally different as people have said, far more action than horror oriented. Far too many moments - like Mass Effect 2 actually - where you could walk into a room and say "oh look, a lot of knee high walls and crates, guess I'm going to fight some guys with guns in this area". Little things, like totally overhauling the ammo and resource systems in ways that make no sense (which we now know was to facilitate microtransactions, big surprise). Because one "ammo" is simultaneously able to become a bullet, a plasma charge, a rocket propelled grenade, or a javelin-like spike. It was just little things like that that made it so "meh". All the little generic tweaks that made no sense. They EA'd it and it blew up in their faces. A surprise to no one but themselves.
  • @127 @134 People won't care, they hate EA that much that any rumor is true. It doesn't help when the site uses "report" instead of "rumor" in their headline either.
  • EA just announced that this is a lie http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/03/05/rumor-dead-space-4-canceled.aspx
  • Yeah, credibility was lost here today as far as the site's news section goes. Any decent editior wouldn't have let that title get through without confirmation.
  • @139 They can choose to not care but it doesn't change the fact that the original report came anonymously, and that EA has not only responded...but responded very quickly, which suggests that it is indeed a false claim. When this site has to update yet another article because they jumped the gun and piggy-backed on larger media reports that are in fact unconfirmed, you'll see a complete switch in the comment section from that point forward.
  • That's what happens when you turn a survival horror into an co-oping action shooter.
  • It's a shame to see this series go. It's one of my favorite series ever. It's better than Resident Evil in some aspects. I agree that the microtransaction system wasn't implemented well and the high-school love triangle is completely befitting of the series, but that shouldn't be any excuse to kill off this series. EA should reconsider that decision.
  • Sorry to disappoint people but http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-03-05-ea-cans-dead-space-series-following-poor-sales-of-dead-space-3-report So edit this please.
  • I guess the regular gamers didn't like to be put in the same category as the microtransaction cellphone gamers... Nice move EA... Now get your game in the bargain bin alongside RE6 so I can finally play it. Told ya I would cancel my pre-order.
  • We are witnessing the demise of the gaming market. By this time next year it will crash, games cost to much add on top of that the season pass crap and a 60$ turns into a 100$ game.
  • Sad day... I love the Dead Space series and thoroughly enjoyed 3
  • @147 What? Demise of the gaming market? Games getting to much? I just bought Sim City for $60, like every other game that has come out this entire generation. You know what was expensive, $60 games back in N64 era, they basically cost $80. Gaming is the one thing that hasn't been inflated, hell, its even gone down thanks to Steam and all the Xbox sales. You know what the problem is? Cheap gamers who want everything to be free now a days. What kills me about DS3 is that everyone raged about two totally optional features that no one forced you to use. I will never understand how options can ever been seen as a bad thing, especially when one of them is free
  • @148 EA has said this is a false report and that Dead Space remains an important IP to them.
  • I'd love for some good to come of this story and for EA to actually learn something. Maybe even letting game developers work on their projects without interference.
  • Bitch bitch bitch, cheap entitled gamer rants yeah!
  • I've not bought Dead Space 3 yet, the microtransactions really put me off it, loved the first and enjoyed the second, I'll probably pick it up when it's cheap though.
  • #24 is right. Love or hate EA, this is bad news for all of us gamers who don't fit the "Action/COD kid" mold. By boycotting or not buying this game from a quality developer, we only hurt Visceral. Do you think EA cares about that? Hell no! They just shelve it and look to the next revenue stream, which as a business, is what they are supposed to do. Meanwhile, us serious gamers lose one more quality franchise which could have possibly turned back into a horror classic if EA saw enough demand for the franchise/genre. In the end we only screwed ourselves here.
  • Also, EA denied this. They said they're happy with how Dead Space 3 is doing.
  • @149 At least back in the day when you bought a game you got the complete fucking game. OT: I couldn't care less about this news as I own DS 1 & 2 and didn't even bother with 3 because of the direction it went. Resident Evil 6 was also a huge disappointment and I'm sad to see that the Survival Horror franchise has long gone.
  • Bwahahahaha i got this from love film and getting an online pass from ebay ea wont get my money since when should we pay for co op lol
  • "doubt over the future of the once-promising action horror series." Don't you mean doubt over the once successful horror series...
  • EA sabotages it's own game, and then kills the developer because of it. *slow clap*
  • I bought it out of support for the guys at Visceral and I must say that I really enjoyed it. Sure, it could have been somewhat better if EA hadn't interfered. But still, great game.
  • Holy crap, what a (another) absolutely vile move on EA's part. Many vile moves with just this one game actually. Who makes these shitty decisions at EA? Who pushes around a Dev. with past success?!? VG is not at fault, the EA drones who forced anti-DS changes are at fault. Why are you not fired from your job!?! Are you freaking serious!?! EA is pure evil at this point, there is no one at EA who is an actual video game fan, or has any type of interest in putting the desires of game fans before their own profits. I have lost all hope for games published by EA, period. Even with a committed/honest Dev, EA will force bullshit moves, EVERY TIME. I no longer have ANY faith in ANY developer who is owned/run by EA. EA pulls the strings, and EA makes the final calls... even with EA consistently making decisions that are negative for the gamers who support them. I will now go out of my way to stop spending any of my money on products with an EA logo anywhere on it. EA forced the changes that causes a lot of the DS3 fan-upset! IT IS THEIR FAULT! Many of the poor decisions in DS3 can be traced to EA, they altered the game while shitting on past DS-fans in an attempt to find a larger demographic, it did not work like they hoped, now everyone looses what should have been a unique and long lasting series. After decades of watching EA slowing morph into the game-destroyer they are today, I am done with EA products. No matter what the past success/fan praise for a game.... whatever EA touches turns to PURE SHIT! Fuck you EA, you always screw over the people who support your entire business.
  • "EA sabotages it's own game, and then kills the developer because of it. *slow clap* " -R0Y4LEwitCHEESE lol, WELL PUT! That is exactly how I feel.... It is 100% EA's fault.
  • EVERYONE ITS FALSE INFORMATION!!!
  • and for the record, DeadSpace 3 was a great game, with a lot of replayability... I had a ton a fun, three times already!! Felt like a playable action movie though, like Uncharted or something like that... Was a good game, but the reasons I had fun with DS3, were not the same reasons I enjoyed past DS games. But I still had fun with DS3, 3 playthroughs and counting. (the ending was not that great however, too much like ME story; just remove The Reaper element and add in The Flood)
  • Remember last year when EA won the Golden Poo Award for being the worst company in America? It's stuff like this that is why people showed up in droves to vote them over Bank of America and Wal Mart. And what did they do? Did they take the award as a sign that people are fed up with them and maybe they should shift the way they service loyal customers? No, they issued a dickish statement saying how other companies are worse and that they are essentially too big to fail so everyone can screw off. Enough with the microtransactions and gutting series of the qualities that made us all fall in love with them so you can broaden the appeal. You make video games, EA, not apps. It's sad that you don't listen to the people that keep you in business. I wonder how many of your cash cows you'll have to screw up before things change for the better.
  • @142 I don't see the comments switching even if this site updates the article, people will still go on about how evil EA is. And by the time they do this article will be on the second page where no one will see the update.
  • So the game's a flop, but micro-transactions are a hit? Eh?
  • @166 Comments switching meaning that you'll see less commentary from EA haters and more from Dead Space fans. At this point, they probably won't update this article though. They'll just make a new one, and maybe even remove this since its essentially proven to be a blatant lie at this point.
  • @76: There are no microtransactions in Dead Space 1 you dumb fuck. Microtransactions means buying things with REAL LIFE MONEY. Jesus you're fucking stupid.
  • This will no doubt go unheeded, but this is absolutely silly. EA is not at fault here. Without EA, the game wouldn't have been made at all. "Suits" may kill games off that may have been good, but they also provide the funding. Until you're off funding development of high budget games with no care for a return on your investment, you probably shouldn't be complaining. And saying the TPS elements are what killed it is silly. You have no clue. Stop looking at things like this through the eyes of a "gamer" and consider it from an investment perspective. You guys must be like 15. Such ignorance...
  • Visceral Games employees are saying that this is completely false. http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/03/rumors-of-dead-spaces-demise-are-false-says-studio/
  • Micro transactions? I had to hunt the menu down, it wasn't in any way obvious. Viscreal actually added in ways to farm resources just to fuck with EA, played on impossible all the way through and never once had to even look at this menu it was only after playing for the last achievements did I decide to look. Dead space 1... those times when you had no ammo, money or health, if the option to buy these things was suddenly added in a TU would you buy them? The tone seems to be 'they added micro transactions urpdederp I better not buy DS3 because I won't be able to help myself hur hur hur'
  • Damn, well I really enjoyed ds and ds2. Playing ds3 co-op right now with my buddy and its kinda boring.
  • EA will never change. They are at their core evil.
  • It's hilarious that the people who do these news articles for this site will put up a new article about Deus Ex, but won't update this blatantly false article. It's bad enough the news person ran with this "report" without seeing if this story was true, but to fail to update the story hours after other sites to have is horrible journalism. What the hell happened to this site.
  • Well what did EA expect? You butcher one of your greatest franchises by making it not scary and by apparently changing the game so you can have you're stupid fucking micro transactions!
  • Part of me should feel bad that EA have butchered a once proud series- - But part of me is rejoicing the fact that DS3 will no doubt be going rather cheap rather soon, if figures are to be believed. But seriously, R.I.P. Dead Space. Or at least, as much peace as you'll have before EA dump Mass Effect in the grave with you :/
  • Real...Fake...EA kills everything that is good. I have watched them rape Mass Effect,Dead Space,Dragon Age...Even Madden 13 was a step backwards for them. I hope this isn't the end for Dead Space but if it is then thanks for the hours of fun and f@#k you EA. Oh and John Riccitiello I hope you get fired for having your head up your ass.
  • EA should change their name to MEA - Murderers of Electronic Arts. Dead Space 1 was a fucking masterpiece and then EA shit on it.
  • hopefully, someone other then EA will pick it up. I hate EA with a passion, but I do agree the game wasn't that scary. Co-Op was fine, I just wish it was scarier like the 1st or 2nd dead space.
  • I'm truly surprised they messed about with the formula that made the original dead space great, Bioware first now visceral, next DICE? I seriously have no games left to play if Battlefield goes down the toilet, other than waiting 4-5 years for the publishers with the correct approach and understanding of game development such as Take 2 and Zenimax.
  • What a load of shit.. i have nothing more to say
  • I'm almost sure that all the haters in the comments haven't even played half of the game... I'm on Chapter 12 and its amazing. The gameplay took a tweak and micro transactions were implemented but it is still Dead Space. I have played the other two and maybe it's not that scary, but it has some heart-stopping moments (I would tell you but that would be spoiler), as I see the developers were fulfilling EA stupid demands of "please moar action because action sellz pew pew" but they tried really hard to not screw you, even micro transactions and suits can be bought with in-game credits (ration seals), so you just have to deploy the robot by time to time and enjoy the experience. I'm sad about this news but I hope EA stop acting stupid and let the game recover on sales, and maybe in a few years we can talk about dead space 4.
  • @183 EA won't stop acting stupid while John Riccitiello is their CEO, under him in the last four fiscal year they are 2.5 billion dollars in the red and still falling. He was named as one of eight CEO's a company should fire in 2013. @181 Hey man I feel you but EA already messed with DICE and the Battlefield series by taking a huge dump on anybody that bought BF3 on it's first day. If I have of known I could of got the same game with all the DLC for the same 60 dollar price tag I would of said "Okay forget being a day one customer" But EA wants me to pay fifty bucks worth of Microsoft points later to get a season pass raising my costs to 110 bucks total to play a game they now sell for 60 bucks.
  • While the game bored me, I was curious about finding out more about the story.
  • I am going to be honest. I am fine with them cancelling a series. All stories need a good ending, and I hate it when series carry on for ever. Besides, 3 actually ends the series, and I am all for it being the final one. As for EA, nothing new. We all know EA is ruining gaming.
  • Damn you EA. This is a great series even if Dead Space 3 wasn't as good as it was meant to be. I really hope someone else picks up the rights to this great series.
  • See this? If it's not broke, don't fix it. Sorry, it's EA - if it's not broke, let's fuck it up entirely...
  • #44,there are only 6 achievements in ds3 that require you to be in coop in any way,so "at least 10 achievements" is pure BS.
  • Well, it's official. Dead Space 4 was never cancelled. x360a stole a news article from a site that fabricated this story. I thought you guys had more integrity than this. Seriously? Posting a story like this without fact checking? EA's Chief Operating Officer has denounced this rumor. This is official. Dead Space 4 is not cancelled. I am quickly losing faith in this site.
  • Why is this story back at the top of the news feed? :/
  • @12 I very much doubt that even EA would have thought that implementation of a micro-transaction system would have boosted games sales as they know, despite lying through their teeth and trying to tell the consumer what the consumer thinks, that most people don't want them. They may have thought they'd make more money out of it long term with the sales from the micro-transactions, but they'd have had to have been utterly inept/misinformed/idiotic to have thought that the micro-transaction thing would help, rather than damage, initial retail sales.
  • @191 i hope you're being sarcastic. Sites post news all the time with confirmation, that's why it's called a RUMOR. Secondly, of course and EA exec is not going to confirm a rumor that one of their biggest franchises is cancelled two months after the last game released.
  • Rumor or not, it doesn't change the fact that they fucked the franchise over.
  • i wish EA would just... go away. im not one to normally jump to conclusions but based on many things like this with games and EA always seeming to be the publisher and/or developer i feel like they are just too much a corporation trying to make money and too little a studio that wants to make awesome games. i get that they of course need to make money, but there reaches a point where that takes too much precedent over what they are actually making. and in the long run, if you set out to and just plain make good games, you will make money. a loyal fan following for a series will make you more money and earn you more respect within the industry than doing it simply for the money. there are fewer and fewer examples of that because companies like EA want to get there hands on EVERYTHING.
  • @191 - http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rumour @192 - Because of the update ;)
  • @188 So? Bugger off back to the Nazi party with your anti-semitic views. You're making the human race look bad.
  • @197 Then next time you should try "rumor" instead of "report" in the headline. I know "report" also is defined as gossip/rumor, but most commenters associated it as a fact and not as a rumor.
  • Dead space will never be the same! I hope i'm wrong
  • ds3 is ok, nowhere close to 1 or 2. i'm glad about them canceling 4, fuck EA and their profit loving SOB's. They want to take advantage of everyone? well turns out noone's going to buy your shitty game you fuckers. DS is like a never ending series, every game ends some riduculously epic way, and then at the end of the credits they throw a hail mary and lead right into a sequel. Wish all of EA would be discontinued..
  • Couldn't afford it in January. Not that bothered tbh.
  • Seems this game caught the Resident Evil disease. RE went the same way, awesome survival horror, last 2 games became action TPS. Dead Space helped with making 2 awesome survival horrors and helped fill the void that RE could no longer deliver. So what do they do with dead space 3, the exact same thing they done with RE 5/6, which is the exact same thing fans do not want
  • While i really don't think I am going to like the way that DS3 went I think we should all remember that EA is the sole parent company of Visceral Games. And without EA there would never have been a DS one or DS two and def not the quality that those games achieved. I personally think that the microtransactions systems are trash but non the less we should all remember that this isn't EA's very first game series. They are in this business to strictly make money and without them you can bet alot of other games would have never made it out of development hell.
  • Some comments here are really &"£%ing ignorant, like comment #1 "All about the money..." The above seems to be a general hate trend here. Well yes of course it is, they are trying to run a business. No money means no games and no games means some of you will have nothing to spend your time bitching about anymore! then what will you do. Seriously some people need to grow up and understand the world a little better.
  • "Watch this space." Why bother? It's dead. =D @205: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/6814-Companies-Exist-To-Make-Money You need to grow up and realize that "they are trying to run a business" does not justify horrible decisions.
  • this game is bad. that's all
  • Good, maybe they'll learn from this. The money hungry twats.
  • Ea is so fucking dumb. They take out the best part of what made the series great and then sit around and wonder why it didnt do as well. Seriously EA take a long walk off a short cliff please.
  • @5 - Suits have always done it. I bought the history of sonic book a few weeks ago and its really interesting to see how even in 91 suits were giving the overall say and what to do regarding big projects. Really intersting reading.
  • @198 Actually, you do lose credibility when you're constantly citing forum posts and no-name cites for half the news you do. Even a moderate amount of fact checking disproves most of the forum rumors you guys post every single day. Simply because NeoGAF ignores the truth does not mean you should. NeoGAF and random websites are not viable sources. Have some integrity...
  • And I only tell you this because I do like your site. The reviews are actually much better than the major gaming news outlets and some of the small time stuff you highlight is interesting. I just wish you'd substantiate it.
  • @169 - I guess buying a tank suit with 400 ms points doesn't cost real money then. Try realizing what you're saying before calling someone else an idiot. Why are all these complaints arising with Dead Space 3? Mass Effect 3 had micro transactions, does that game suck too? I didn't think so. Other games have them as well, it doesn't mean the game is bad. For all those complaining about all the action and lack of horror, trying playing game first. The first 3 chapters had a lot of action, the other 16 were quite scary in my opinion. It's just like AC3, people just start bitching because the intro of the game isn't what they wanted, even though the rest of the game is still pretty good.
  • Surprised you posted this news when it was already reported and updated on all other news sites that it was completely false.
  • People will probably downvote me and say shit about me but honestly boycotting a game or company because they have optional content in their product that in no way impacts your ability to enjoy it is stupid. I haven't played any Deadspace game but it's stupid how people bitch about EA's microtransactions when they are completely optional and don't give people an advantage over one another. I've played so called free to play pc games that are actually built around the philosophy of pay to win where in order to get all the content in the free game you have to pay for content passes and the best gear cost real money to buy. I hate that shit but being able to get a couple extra equipment packs in ME3 when I have some extra MS points is a nice option to have considering that playing matches it will usually take you between one and two hours to unlock the better packs. If they were charging sixty dollars for an incomplete game and then making you pay to get content that should have been free like basic weapons and gear and not additional content that isn't required to play the game and that was released after the game hit shelves then and only then would I refuse to buy their products. The fact is EA is a publicly traded company that means they have to balance the products the customers want with the products that will pay their stockholders and allow the company to continue to operate. Sadly with the increasing cost of triple A games only small companies like Mojang who put all their resources into one title that is both innovative and fun will be making unique games anymore and they won't have the best graphics or other things we have come to associate with major games.
  • Or how about the long shot option. EA has listened to the vocal complaints and canned the then planned version of DS4. In favor of going back to a more suspense style atmosphere.
  • You cant really blame EA for wanting to make money, that's what companies do. And lets not forget visceral games, along with other devs sold out to EA, why, to make money, so really visceral and all the others have only got themselves to blame to a degree. Its why people sell up, big cash injection and probs bonuses, but without the responsibility, that then becomes EA's in this case. As for microtransactions, there nothing new, been around ages. Microtransactions are away of continuing to make money even if sales are lo. And on the whole are optional. Pc games been doing it for ages. Its the future, get to grips with it people, it works and its here to stay. Don't like it, dont buy anything, simpleas that.
  • For all you Dumbshits out there that think EA is running a business, so they need to make money, shut up for a second. We ALL understand EA is a business, thus needs to be run as one and needs to make money. However, this does NOT dictate that they can just shelf a game and move on to the next one like it's Call of Duty or Gears of War. Where i work, yes, we try to get a sale, but at the same time, we don't want to give our customers SHIT to use for themselves. That, kids, is what we call being a TERRIBLE BUSINESS! on the basis of: 1. Selling Shit quality products passing them off as Great. 2. Lack of sales because of unhappy customers 3. Only having that "WE NEED MOAR MONEY!" Mentality 4. Not caring what the customer thinks you need to do with/have as a Product. and, 5. When your sales go down and think it's not their fault in anyway. I understand that some times there are things that reduce sales in games, IE: What quarter it was released in, Economy, Financial issues on the consumers part, etc. All well and dandy, however, it doesn't excuse EA at all for fucking over a LOT of games they publish. And for those that say "but without EA, we wouldn't have Dead Space!" You are correct. BUT! If EA would have let Visceral alone and let them make THEIR game, and let EA Publish it, we might have seen a great end to the series. Instead, a rumor goes around stating that DS4 is cut, Visceral is dying, and EA denies it all. I honestly don't believe Visceral is dying, but I can believe the DS4 Cut. Whether it's due to sales in the first month and a half or not, no one knows. But to me, it sounds like EA is trying to save face before they get burned down by a lot of angry DS Fans.
  • So EA tells them to quit DS4 but go ahead with DS3 DLC. OF course.
  • Probably because everyone is too cowardly to make survival horror anymore. Survival Horror was a massively successful genre, and suddenly developers said "well....what if we just made action games that no one will like and get rid of the horror element that the fans crave"? Idiots.
  • I was originally going to rent it.. but the addition of an online pass simply for co-op killed that idea. EA will not get extra money out of me with online, and season passes and micro-transactions.
  • Of course they'll try another Dead Space game. A first-person bro shooter, just like they want all their action games to be.
  • First EA destroys Mass Effect, then Dragon Age,and now Dead Space. I hope EA burns.
  • There will be a dead space 4 no doubt, Even if they sell the rights to a outside party, someone will definitely take on the project.
  • It didnt have the full feal of the first 2 but it was still a good game and how it ends followed by the ending of the DLC i am really wishing for a fourth game such a cliffhanger
