HMV Reaches a Deal With Key Suppliers

HMV has managed to strike an agreement with its key suppliers to ensure that major new film, music and video game releases will still make it into any of the troubled retail chain's stores that currently remain open. This means that potential big DVD and Blu-ray seller Skyfall (James Bond's latest outing) will be available in HMV this coming Monday, which should help generate some much-needed revenue.

“We are pleased that these agreements are now in place, allowing us to replenish stock and bring in new titles,” stated joint administrator Nick Edwards. “The support of suppliers over the past few weeks has been significant and these agreements demonstrate their ongoing commitment to supporting HMV.”

Current HMV administrator Deloitte is also confident that a buyer will soon be found for the chain, meaning that the historic brand could still be thrown a lifeline.

“Good progress has been made to date and we have received a positive level of interest in the business,” Edwards added. “Discussions are progressing with a number of parties interested in both the business as a going concern and individual assets despite the high fixed cost base associated with a store network.

“Landlords have been generally flexible and supportive and we hope to continue working closely.”

Despite a number of recent store closures, this latest update offers a glimmer of hope for HMV.

Their prices will still be higher than the supermarkets and online so people won't be buying new releases from hmv

We're still going to lose HMV no matter what happens unless the price's are permanently dropped. Or who knows, maybe it'll hang on by the skin of it's teeth the way Game did...

I don't get the logic of this the reason they're in such a mess is high prices and yet they rack more stock to sell at high prices = more loss?

Doesn't really bother me now, as I'll have to go out of my way to actually get to an HMV.

I prefer to use independent stores if I can, especially for DVD's. I've not bought in HMV for 2 years and a good 8 years before that. I like to shop around and find the best price. Maybe they can pick the pieces up and get themselves back on track. Be a s game if they do go as many big name high street stores have closed in recent years. My town is now full of pubs and charity shops and the odd bank.

We won't loose HMV. The movie and music industry can't afford not to have a dedicated shop on the high street. Yes, they will have to change their business model, but no, they won't be disappearing from the high street just yet.

@10 They can and will, the physical market for the entertainment industry is dying with people preferring to purchase online. The only place it seems to be doing okay is in supermarkets where they can run low profit margins and benefit from economies of scale. As a few people have said the only way they will survive is if they manage to get their prices competitive because as it stands they are failing to do so.

HMV will survive because there are enough people who won't shop around for cheaper options and someone will invest in them knowing this.
I don't buy from HMV and haven't for a long time because their prices are so high. I'm surprised it's taken so long for the administrators to be called in

I don't think any of you are talking any sense. I worked for HMV for a few years and the prices of new release games and DVDS were always competitive on launch day. New titles selling for £35-£40 the same as the online prices you get online.

New DVD releases regularly are £10 for the first week then rise a few quid, the same goes for Blu Rays that release as low as £12 for the first week. Don't think you know it all just because you pop your head in once every few months, if you paid regular visits then you will notice they do and quite a lot of the times try to compete, especially the past two years.

Battlefield, Fifa 12, Uncharted 3 at the time were constantly in the £25-£30 range every couple of months when I worked there as they rotate sales, you just have to look out for sales once in a while instead of walking on past, or entering a store once or twice a year. Do your research.

@17. I hate HMV because of their apawling prices on old stuff.
I agree they have an occasional good deal. And that there new releases are sometime on par with other prices and occasionally cheaper but usually £5 more expensive.

But I got to 4 different stores between Edinburgh and Glasgow and everytime I look for an old album or game it's crazy CDs often as high as £15 which have been out for 5+years
Last year they were selling blue dragon for £49.99. Among other oldies. Games rarely even release at that price it's bullshit.
However I got kill zone special Ediiob with the mask for £40 a few months after release.

And it's not because I don't look often enough I got to HMV and spend up to an hour looking around 1-2 times per week.

#17 is correct. I do not have a local HMV but whenever I visit a town/city which has I always have a look in HMV. They have competitive prices and sometimes some bloody nice deals! As a HUGE James Bond fan and yet add Bond 23 to my collection I will purchase it from HMV. I normally prefer to purchase it in store but I can make an exception. ^^

I hope HMV do go out of business. Last year I was browsing the TV box sets and saw Friends Season 1-10 with a sticker on the box saying "Was £79 now £49". Doing my shopping at Tesco that night, what should I see? Friends Season 1-10 recommended retail price £49 reduced to £39. What HMV did is not only dishonest, it's probably illegal. Karma's a bitch, you soon to be unemployed bastards.

@20 Peculiar because if you look at Amazon now it is £60. I guess they deserve to go out of business as well? Looking online a lot of sites list the RRP as £100, not sure where you saw it listed as £50? RRPs are pointless anyway; they always fluctuate and you can always find stuff cheaper.

Used to work for them. Were horrible to work for, would raise there prices sneakily after 2 weeks. Always have back catalogue titles worth a fortune and always laughed when the other stores closed down and were doing bad cause they were that smug and competitive. Really thought they were "Top Dog".

No sympathy at all, huge slap of karma! If you're going to be the stuck up pricey bad guy on the high street you are going to loose customers, especially when they said the digital market was no competition when I Tunes came about.
