BioWare Discusses Details of the Next Mass Effect Game
Written Thursday, February 07, 2013 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

BioWare has attempted to clarify the direction of the Mass Effect series, encouraging fans not to call the next game Mass Effect 4.

"To call the next game Mass Effect 4 or ME4 is doing it a disservice and seems to cause a lot of confusion here," wrote Community Manager Chris Priestly on the company's forums.

"We have already said that the Commander Shepard trilogy is over and that the next game will not feature him/her. That is the only detail you have on the game. I see people saying 'well, they'll have to pick a canon ending'. No, because the game does not have to come after. Or before. Or off to the side. Or with characters you know. Or yaddayaddayadda."

Following up Priestly’s comments, BioWare Edmonton boss Yanick Roy suggests that the next Mass Effect game could take place after the events of Mass Effect 3.

"Thinking of the next Mass Effect game as Mass Effect 4 would imply a certain linearity, a straight evolution of the gameplay and story of the first three games," wrote Roy. "That doesn't mean that events of the first three games and the choices you made won't get recognised, but they likely won't be what this new story will focus on.

"If you had three games centred around a group of key soldiers in the US army during World War I and then decided to make a game about another group of people during the Second World War, the games could have many points in common and feel true to one another," he added.

"You likely would have to recognise how the events of the first war influenced the ones of the second, but you would not necessarily think of it as a sequel. Again, the analogy is not great, but what I'm trying to say is that the ME universe is so rich that we are not limited to a single track when coming up with a new story."

Roy also suggested that the next Mass Effect game will be set in the same galaxy, with the same races and lore.

"What makes it Mass Effect is indeed the alien races, the technology, the lore, history, etc,” he wrote. “You can safely expect those in the next Mass Effect."

Despite the fact that BioWare Edmonton seems happy to discuss vague details of the game, however, a full reveal shouldn’t be expected for some time, wrote Roy.

"We don't have a firm communication timeline established at this point, but I don't expect it will be for several more months. Early in development, things fluctuate so much that any detail we communicate could have to be 'uncommunicated' a few months later.

“I think we'd rather have something solid to show by the time we step in the spotlight."

Yeah, but you know whenever the game is referred to in articles by its actual game, it'll be "Mass Effect: whatever, or more commonly known as Mass Effect 4 / the fourth Mass Effect game in the series, blah blah rest of the article here."

So basically EA are telling them to turn it into a straight FPS or TPS.

I'm excited to see them branch out into the ME universe in ways that the Shepard Trilogy would not have allowed.

I have the exact same thoughts as 2 and 3. EA are goin to turn ME into a generic FPS with some dialogue sections between firefights... I'm not a huge fan of the series, but I liked ME2, and I have ME3 but haven't had the time to go throug the campaign yet..

I hope Bioware surprise me, but I fear the Bioware I know and love died a few years ago.

so what, are they going down the Final Fantasy route? the same name but new worlds/characters etc? i wouldnt mind that, as square enix have fucked FF completely by doing a trilogy out of the same shit game instead of creating new worlds

The WW1 and WWII comment is interesting. Is it going to be another war against the Reapers or a similar threat? That would immediately come off as an incestuous move.

[spoiler alert]I don't believe for a second they won't have to pick a canon ending, simply because so many things will be influenced by one; the existence of geth, or the control/destruction of reapers by Shepard is simply too big an event to not acknowledge in any game that takes place in the same universe and after the events of Mass Effect 3. The fates of many races are decided by Shepard's actions, like the hanar and drell.
But anyway, i really hope they'll make it work, and stay true to the concept; meaning that I would still like to see some RPG elements, and dialogue-heavy sections.

Maybe a new story line from the Asari perspective for instance. Or any other race. Can't wait. Hope it will become a launch title for the next gen.

I definitely want the next Mass Effect to go back to the roots of the first game that was heavily more RPG, I love ME2 and ME3 but they were too much like FPS cover games.

I want a game similar to Dragon Age Origins where you can pick a race and get a different backstory and conversation options depending on which you picked.

I think to make sweeping statements about any future changes to the direction of the series in terms of stylistic presentations is a little shirt sighted. To conjecture that a company famed for RPG's with a heavy emphasis on choice and user-impacted story is going to be focusing on the thing they are least capable of ie combat gameplay is also a little OTT!

"No, because the game does not have to come after. Or before. Or off to the side"

Which leaves what, an alternate reality? Very original :-/

Also, the WW1 & 2 game analogy doesn't work. The variations in the ME3 endings would be the equivalent of the WW1 end game allowing either the Allies or Germany to win.. which would create two very different WW2s...

If any thing they should have the soldier from the trailer who was cooped up in Big Ben be the main character. My friends and I were wanting him in ME3 but you know how that turned out. We thought he was awesome. Final member of his team, sniping husks to protect stray civilians, and struggling to keep himself alive.

"This is NOT Mass Effect 4... Even though it technically is... But don't call it Mass Effect 4 because we're going to do our best not to recognize anything done in the first three games as well as never introduce familiar faces so that it is like a reboot... Except that it's not. It's the fourth in the series, but it's not a sequel!"

I'm sorry, but that's circular logic. You're basically telling your consumers that you're going to try to go the route of Final Fantasy and make it a sequel "in name only".

We all know that Shepard is done and over with. He's dead in most every playthrough. We GET IT. However, we DO NOT think the story of the Mass Effect universe is over, so it IS a sequel if it's set in that universe. It is then MASS EFFECT 4. It isn't "Shepard 4". No consumer ever thought that it WOULD be that. If it comes after the first three games, it's four. If it comes before them, it's probably 0. The trick is... If you don't want it called "Mass Effect 4", perhaps you should give us its actual name? Just saying...

They can call it whatever they want. They can do whatever they want with it. At this point, my expectations for this game being good are about as high as my expectations for Dragon Age 3: non-existent.

EA buying BioWare was about the worst thing that could have happened to them.

Just give us a Mass Effect MMORRGP and let us pick what alien race we want to play as, each race can have thier own skills and then you could learn skills from other races.

Good. Following the trilogy directly can lead only to disappointment. A fresh take on the series would be welcomed, as long as they take the same amount of care shown in the first two ME games.

I'm so sick of the Bioware hate. Get the fuck over it guys and stop bagging them out just because it's the cool thing to do on the interwebs nowadays.

Hate the ending of ME3 or not you'd have to have a terrible taste in games to honestly think it was a bad game.

@28 That'd be great, but just look at SWToR which is made by BioWare. You have the entire Star Wars universe, but you're only allowed playing as human races (or very human-looking races). You can't even play as a Wookie.

i'd love to see mass effect become an rpg similar to the elder scrolls. be any race, do anything. bioware needs to return to its roots and make rpgs. sadly the next mass effect is gonna be a multi-player focused shooter filled with micro transactions and over-priced dlc.

can't wait for it, i hope you can choose a race this time and have the beginning different for whatever race you choose, like in DA:O. it should be after ME3 and the story is to try to rebuild the galactic universe and re-establish a cross race/species universe and it be set maybe a couple hundred years after ME3.

just a thought:)

I agree with #30, it's not like ME3 or DA2 were terrible, they were just different than the originals. People bash ME3's ending all they want but they fail to see that everything before then was great. DA2 was pretty fun too, it just lacked proper dungeons.

People need to stop using their EA hate (which I have plenty of because of DS3) and showing it towards BioWare. The fact of the matter is: it's still Mass Effect! All three Mass Effects were great for what they were, and unique ending or not, I think BioWare has the potential to bounce back and create a staggering game, whatever genre it is.

As long as it's not an MMO. That would be utter garbage. They should stick to what has worked for them in the past. They need to focus on creating a story that makes sense at its conclusion. I Love the ME games. After ME3 though, the franchise has kind of been knocked out. Here's hoping Bioware will be able to pick it back up, dust it off, and create something as beautiful as ME1 and ME2.

Ah who am I kidding, EA will find some way to f*ck it ALL up.

In the end, they really said nothing at all. It could be anything - after, before, during, a side story, 10k years into the future, there are ways to sidestep that mess of an ending without retconning it and without really adressing it.

I think they it should be a game about a young asian warrior, and their familiar cast of friends going out to explore new threats to the world, exploring new countries, andd finding new paths of mysticism and philosophy along the way

That way they could avoid the whole mass effect 4 thing by calling it JADE EMPIRE 2

FTA:
"To call the next game Mass Effect 4 or ME4 is doing it a disservice"

and to call the next game mass effect anything is going mass effect 1 a disservice

the tl;dr for this article is ea is just trying to cash in on the mass effect name. they aren't done running the franchise into the dirt and want to beat this dead horse some more.

Well. I have no idea what BioWare would to do with new ME. I hope and say "FUCK EA" and "DO NOT LISTEN TO EA". Wish BioWare think about themself and think about what fans want. Every ME fans want ME stay with Third-Person Shooter RPG this what true ME 1 had. ME 2 and 3 is great games yeah but franchise is ruined but games great. Wish Microsoft stick with ME franchise and not finish with it and handed it to EA (well I knew Microsoft will let BioWare to do what they want for ME series but Microsoft not want ME anymore so then EA bought it then ruined everything on ME 2 to 3) :/

That World War comment is ridiculous. The choices at the end have huge implications. To trivialise them would be a huge mistake. If they make a game set in the future, they have to pick a canon ending.

I could never get into KotOR 2 because they did exactly what that comment implies they're planning to do with Mass Effect. I hated that my decisions in the first game meant nothing, and I never really gave KotOR 2 a chance because of it.

I'm fine if they continue on in a parallel universe where Shepard made different choices than I did. I would see what happened because of those choices, and because I could see that Shepard's choices had mattered, then I would know that in an alternate universe my Shepard's choices mattered.

Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way, but I would rather be left wondering how the galaxy changed because of my choices then be told that my choices didn't matter.

I don't understand why everyone seems to be so negative about the idea of a new Mass Effect game. Mass Effect is probably my favorite game series of all time, and I can't wait to see what Bioware does with the next one.

Also, as someone who has loved the series from the beginning and played through the first game probably 7 or 8 times, I thought Bioware did a fantastic job with Mass Effect 3. Were there things I didn't like about the ending? Absolutely. However, I think it's unfair to Bioware to judge the whole game based solely on that, and I thought it was really cool of them to provide the extended cut dlc. Not trying to be ranty here, just sayin I think we should remember the 20+ hours of the game that were awesome, instead of the 10 minutes that weren't. :)

@50 I'm with you... I have replayed the original Mass Effect more times than I can remember and still very much enjoy playing through the story (I am currently working a trilogy playthrough - one character the whole way through all three games). I LOVED this franchise, until ME3. The 20+ hours of gameplay were great but that last ten minutes was a HUGE let down. Not because Shepard died but because all your choices throughout the series just became nullified. Not complaining, just stating fact. While that was a controller-throwing moment, the tell-tale sign of the progression of this IP was the inclusion of multiplayer. And, unfortunately, I think @3 may be right on this one. The most multiplayer I ever wanted to see in this game was a CO-OP mode, not the ever-popular and over-rated HORDE mode. But I have seen the changes in other beloved franchises (Tomb Raider and Splinter Cell to name a few) and fear the same for Mass Effect, especially since uber-fuck-up gaming company EA has a hold of the purse strings (I do not think Bioware is the problem in this case). I hate to say it folks, but I think Mass Effect died with Shepard. I can only pray that I will be pleasantly surprised but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I played all 3 with the same character all the way thru. But like so many have already said... it was those dreaded last 10 minutes that kinda killed it for me.

Point being that my hopes and expectations are dim to the least for this upcoming "Mass Effect 4" game. And I do mean DIM... we're talking DIM like Joker's chances of beating the world record in the 100-meter dash... and that's DIM.

Something I'd still like, even though I know it's very unlikely, is to your character be a descendant of Shepard; whatever race you were romancing became a part of the family after the fact or had Shep's baby (only a couple combos could do that but still), and then let you play as whatever race you want from the species intermingling. I want to play as an Asari just like we did with Shepard, same as a Drell. I'd love more customization like being able to add as many features as we want to the character (choose were there's scars, tats, etc and have more than one of them things like that).
