[spoiler alert]I don't believe for a second they won't have to pick a canon ending, simply because so many things will be influenced by one; the existence of geth, or the control/destruction of reapers by Shepard is simply too big an event to not acknowledge in any game that takes place in the same universe and after the events of Mass Effect 3. The fates of many races are decided by Shepard's actions, like the hanar and drell. But anyway, i really hope they'll make it work, and stay true to the concept; meaning that I would still like to see some RPG elements, and dialogue-heavy sections. |

| I think to make sweeping statements about any future changes to the direction of the series in terms of stylistic presentations is a little shirt sighted. To conjecture that a company famed for RPG's with a heavy emphasis on choice and user-impacted story is going to be focusing on the thing they are least capable of ie combat gameplay is also a little OTT! |

"No, because the game does not have to come after. Or before. Or off to the side" Which leaves what, an alternate reality? Very original :-/ Also, the WW1 & 2 game analogy doesn't work. The variations in the ME3 endings would be the equivalent of the WW1 end game allowing either the Allies or Germany to win.. which would create two very different WW2s... |

"This is NOT Mass Effect 4... Even though it technically is... But don't call it Mass Effect 4 because we're going to do our best not to recognize anything done in the first three games as well as never introduce familiar faces so that it is like a reboot... Except that it's not. It's the fourth in the series, but it's not a sequel!" I'm sorry, but that's circular logic. You're basically telling your consumers that you're going to try to go the route of Final Fantasy and make it a sequel "in name only". We all know that Shepard is done and over with. He's dead in most every playthrough. We GET IT. However, we DO NOT think the story of the Mass Effect universe is over, so it IS a sequel if it's set in that universe. It is then MASS EFFECT 4. It isn't "Shepard 4". No consumer ever thought that it WOULD be that. If it comes after the first three games, it's four. If it comes before them, it's probably 0. The trick is... If you don't want it called "Mass Effect 4", perhaps you should give us its actual name? Just saying... |

They can call it whatever they want. They can do whatever they want with it. At this point, my expectations for this game being good are about as high as my expectations for Dragon Age 3: non-existent. EA buying BioWare was about the worst thing that could have happened to them. |

can't wait for it, i hope you can choose a race this time and have the beginning different for whatever race you choose, like in DA:O. it should be after ME3 and the story is to try to rebuild the galactic universe and re-establish a cross race/species universe and it be set maybe a couple hundred years after ME3. just a thought:) |

I agree with #30, it's not like ME3 or DA2 were terrible, they were just different than the originals. People bash ME3's ending all they want but they fail to see that everything before then was great. DA2 was pretty fun too, it just lacked proper dungeons. People need to stop using their EA hate (which I have plenty of because of DS3) and showing it towards BioWare. The fact of the matter is: it's still Mass Effect! All three Mass Effects were great for what they were, and unique ending or not, I think BioWare has the potential to bounce back and create a staggering game, whatever genre it is. |

As long as it's not an MMO. That would be utter garbage. They should stick to what has worked for them in the past. They need to focus on creating a story that makes sense at its conclusion. I Love the ME games. After ME3 though, the franchise has kind of been knocked out. Here's hoping Bioware will be able to pick it back up, dust it off, and create something as beautiful as ME1 and ME2. Ah who am I kidding, EA will find some way to f*ck it ALL up. |

FTA: "To call the next game Mass Effect 4 or ME4 is doing it a disservice" and to call the next game mass effect anything is going mass effect 1 a disservice the tl;dr for this article is ea is just trying to cash in on the mass effect name. they aren't done running the franchise into the dirt and want to beat this dead horse some more. |

Every ME fans want ME stay with Third-Person Shooter RPG this what true ME 1 had. ME 2 and 3 is great games yeah but franchise is ruined but games great. Wish Microsoft stick with ME franchise and not finish with it and handed it to EA (well I knew Microsoft will let BioWare to do what they want for ME series but Microsoft not want ME anymore so then EA bought it then ruined everything on ME 2 to 3) :/ |

That World War comment is ridiculous. The choices at the end have huge implications. To trivialise them would be a huge mistake. If they make a game set in the future, they have to pick a canon ending. I could never get into KotOR 2 because they did exactly what that comment implies they're planning to do with Mass Effect. I hated that my decisions in the first game meant nothing, and I never really gave KotOR 2 a chance because of it. I'm fine if they continue on in a parallel universe where Shepard made different choices than I did. I would see what happened because of those choices, and because I could see that Shepard's choices had mattered, then I would know that in an alternate universe my Shepard's choices mattered. Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way, but I would rather be left wondering how the galaxy changed because of my choices then be told that my choices didn't matter. |

I don't understand why everyone seems to be so negative about the idea of a new Mass Effect game. Mass Effect is probably my favorite game series of all time, and I can't wait to see what Bioware does with the next one. Also, as someone who has loved the series from the beginning and played through the first game probably 7 or 8 times, I thought Bioware did a fantastic job with Mass Effect 3. Were there things I didn't like about the ending? Absolutely. However, I think it's unfair to Bioware to judge the whole game based solely on that, and I thought it was really cool of them to provide the extended cut dlc. Not trying to be ranty here, just sayin I think we should remember the 20+ hours of the game that were awesome, instead of the 10 minutes that weren't. :) |

| @50 I'm with you... I have replayed the original Mass Effect more times than I can remember and still very much enjoy playing through the story (I am currently working a trilogy playthrough - one character the whole way through all three games). I LOVED this franchise, until ME3. The 20+ hours of gameplay were great but that last ten minutes was a HUGE let down. Not because Shepard died but because all your choices throughout the series just became nullified. Not complaining, just stating fact. While that was a controller-throwing moment, the tell-tale sign of the progression of this IP was the inclusion of multiplayer. And, unfortunately, I think @3 may be right on this one. The most multiplayer I ever wanted to see in this game was a CO-OP mode, not the ever-popular and over-rated HORDE mode. But I have seen the changes in other beloved franchises (Tomb Raider and Splinter Cell to name a few) and fear the same for Mass Effect, especially since uber-fuck-up gaming company EA has a hold of the purse strings (I do not think Bioware is the problem in this case). I hate to say it folks, but I think Mass Effect died with Shepard. I can only pray that I will be pleasantly surprised but I'm not getting my hopes up. |

I played all 3 with the same character all the way thru. But like so many have already said... it was those dreaded last 10 minutes that kinda killed it for me. Point being that my hopes and expectations are dim to the least for this upcoming "Mass Effect 4" game. And I do mean DIM... we're talking DIM like Joker's chances of beating the world record in the 100-meter dash... and that's DIM. |

| Something I'd still like, even though I know it's very unlikely, is to your character be a descendant of Shepard; whatever race you were romancing became a part of the family after the fact or had Shep's baby (only a couple combos could do that but still), and then let you play as whatever race you want from the species intermingling. I want to play as an Asari just like we did with Shepard, same as a Drell. I'd love more customization like being able to add as many features as we want to the character (choose were there's scars, tats, etc and have more than one of them things like that). |
