Now here are some video game movies that could have potential... Star Trek, Lost, Super-8 and Star Wars Episode VII man, JJ Abrams and Valve boss Gabe Newell have been in discussions to collaborate on both games and movies, with Half-Life and Portal movies potentially in the offing.

The pair talked about the differences in storytelling across TV, film and games on stage today at the DICE Summit, remarking that they'd like their discussions to become "more than talks" as they seek to join forces to develop a game, as well as create the aforementioned Half-Life and Portal flicks.

Beyond that, Abrams and Newell stopped short of going into any further specifics on the collaboration, but no doubt there'll be announcements coming in the near future. For now however, we can start getting excited about the Half-Life and Portal movies, and Abrams and Valve's gaming collaboration, whatever that may be.

  • JJ Abrams is brilliant
  • I would pay almost any amount of money to see a Portal movie.
  • he is actually someone i could see doing it some justice if it did happen
  • Abrams is only a good project starter. They either fizzle out afterwards, or he just quits and hands over the projects to someone else.
  • New game? From Valve? Left 4 Dead 3 or Half Life Episode 3 please... :)
  • Half Life and Portal now with more Lens Flare!
  • Half-Life and Portal movies... Go fuck yourself, cheers!
  • @1 No, JJ Abrams is not brilliant, he's ok. He is a director that does not have his own style to bring a new take on franchises. All of his movies have been pretty good knockoffs of a previous directors sytle that, while adequate, were not that interesting in the sense that it is nothing new. the reason why the names of great directors usually include people like Spielberg, Lucas (back during the original movie and trilogy), Nolan, Daemon, etc. This is because they each take chances to share THEIR vision with their movies, taking a chance for artistic integrity. Nobody wantd to direct Star Wars, so when Lucas did it, he took a chance and brought a huge creative touch into the film Abrams has yet to show such a trait in films, instead diercting each movie as a pretty good knockoff of anothers style.
  • Anything but Half Life 3 eh Gabe
  • @8 What about Lost?
  • J.J Abrahms is a talented director and I am very excited to see what he'll do with Star Wars Episode VII. I loved Star Trek, Super 8 and I think Star Trek Into Darkness will be pretty special. Lost's first two season will go down as some of best television ever created, Lost's ending will go down as one of the worst television endings ever created.
  • @5 Come now we all know Valve can't count to three.
  • This... this is the news that will make the internet explode....
  • @11 The ending to lost was bad, why?
  • @11. You mean best?
  • People like Abrams and #11 are pretty much the sole reason Star Trek is now a summer blockbuster "do not engage brain" franchise. And the last season of Lost was terribad. Should've just ended with 5 seasons.
  • Awesome news! Can't wait, JJ is awesome, did a brilliant work with: Cloverfield/StarTrek/Fringe so can't wait for what he's going to do next.
  • abrams is getting his hands on EVERYTHING
  • Technically, they've already worked together, on that playable Super 8 trailer that came with the PC version of Portal 2. But as that scarcely counts... lens flare joke.
  • @8, Revoultion, Lost, Fringe, Person of Interest, Alcatraz, and Alias. Should I go on? These are just TV Shows too. You sir are probably a Shonda Rhimes fan, aren't you? Plus we're in the 21st century where everything is a knock off. Every thing falls back to something else and nothing is ever original anymore when you break it down in size.
  • Just no.
  • I really don't think JJ is the right guy for Star Wars, and I wasn't massively enamoured with what he did to Trek. On the other hand, Super 8 was awesome and I really think he might be the right fit for a half-life and/or portal movie. Seriously - if you want to mess about with alternate dimensions, JJ is your guy. I hope he doesn't make either of the Half-Life or Portal movies into a trilogy though - Gabe will never let him make the third part ;) (yeah I know....but I couldn't resist)
  • I don't personally think that Half Life or Portal would translate well to film for the simple reason that if either Gordon Freeman or Chell was to make even the slightest bit of sound then the film's would be ruined for the gamers, but if they doesn't say anything then non gamers won't like the characters.
  • Valve is absolutely overrated. You want to know why Half Life 3 hasn't been made (or episode 3)? Because the game isn't good. Or maybe it is, but it's not anywhere close to expectations obviously or it would be released. Half Life 3 must have been in development forever.
  • A Portal movie? What, we get to watch puzzles get completed?
  • WOW J.J. Abrams the guy who said I want Star Trek to be more like Star Wars. I'm pretty tired of people thinking he is "visionary" or "good" lol, All his movies are mediocre at best.
  • Isn't JJ Abrams directing the new Star Wars movie as well?
  • Took 5 more posts for a lens flare joke than I expected.
  • @25 Don't forget about the subplot of CAKE!
  • Since I recently heard that Guillermo del Toro absolutely loves the Portal games (he 'borrowed' GLaDOS' voice for Pacific Rim), I think they should really try to get him to direct if they actually do make a film.
  • I swear if a half-life movie comes out before half-life 3...
  • @25 it would probably be like saw (without the gore) mixed with i robot
  • I would like to see a Fringe game.
  • #11 doesn't answer me...
  • I hope the Portal movie has a similar feel as the original Cube film and isn't just some dude/chick running around with a portal gun making reaction faces at all of the crazy shit going on
  • If it's done in the right away, both a Portal and Half Life movie could be excellent.
  • Personally I can't stand Star Trek, I think Valve is the most over-rated developer in existence and I can't stand that flip floping fat ass Gabe Newall. First he calls PSN a trainwreck of a console and now Valve is developing first on Sony's gimped machine for nearly all 3rd party multiplats? I'm glad I boycotted all games from EA and Valve, and If JJ Abrams has anything to do with the next star wars film that could turn out to be a disaster. I loved Super 8 and alot of the other things he has done but NO ONE RELATED TO STAR TREK SHOULD BE AT THE HELM OF A STAR WARS FILM.. That line should never be crossed.
  • Abrams is an overrated hack. Nothing he has done has been good imo.
  • @38, You have no appreciation for the fantastic work this man has done in the movie and tv industry in the last decade. LOST, Star Trek, Cloverfield, Super 8, MI:3, Alias, and Fringe. Great titles and shows.
  • I would be excited to see a Half Life and Portal movie. But not with JJ behind it. I've watched all of Lost and the show just moved incredibly slow. MI3 felt just like an action movie than a Mission Impossible movie. While I did like most of the long 'takes' during Cloverfield, the movie itself was not that great. Sometimes I don't understand how people like one thing over another. Saw Star Trek on the IMAX and was just bored really. Why was Lost bigger than Prison Break? Why is Family Guy bigger than Futurama? Doesn't make sense. Again, I would love to see a HL and Portal movie. But saying JJ is on it doesn't mean anything to me. It's just a name. And one that does not mean high quality. I don't like the Nolan Batman movies either. But I know his work is good, and if I were into Batman I'm sure I'd love those movies. So it's not about not liking JJ = bad. It's about JJ doesn't make good things = bad.
  • Lost was awful in the end. Hollow mysteries that sometimes played out, sometimes didn't, but as a whole the show did not finish with any of the promise it started with. The writers basically lied saying they knew what the Island was and they had a big plan over the course of the series. Abrams actually abandoned it after a few seasons and left it to Lindelhoff and the other one; what a pair of hacks. It was mostly made up on the fly. It was genre soup. Star Trek I liked, and I hope the new one will be as good. And Fringe was a decent watch, it almost made up for Lost. I am not fussed about a HL film, or a Portal film. And Abrams will be busy with Star Wars. I am glad I did not attend this talk and stayed at home instead.
  • J.J Gaberams
  • Some emo kid will go see portal and say the cake was alie over and over and probably do some emo cutting then bam portal film will get bad response from mothers and so on but me I think portal the short film to go alongside the Half-Life film just like the game's do
  • For the love of all that is holy in this world, just make Half-Life 3 already!
  • I don't know why everybody is appalled by Abrams being involved in this, everybody here who says he is a hack is acting like he is a no-talent like Michael Bay who only brings Racial stereotypes and Excessive amounts of explosions to the table. Abrams is a great director the new Star Trek is actually exiting so what if its a different formula from the lets spend 2 thirds of the movie talking about what where going to do and the other 1 third actually doing it. And they did say a new game collaboration which could be Half Life 3 with Abrams writing the story, I hope to god it isn't Portal 3 or some new Ip which would be far less interesting than Half Life 3. I have a feeling we will here more about this at E3 or whatever other time of the year the announce gaming-related news. So for know all we can do is cross our fingers and wait hoping its Half Life 3... It could be afterall last year there was that leaked concept art which was said to be either Half Life 2 Episode 3 or Half Life 3, and old Gabe there confirmed it was Half Life and it was new official concept art. it only makes sense I mean the PC exclusive Black Mesa remake just came out getting people back into the series with Next Gen Consoles on the rise it would make alot of sense to just bite the bullet and focus on Half Life 3 already...
  • Should we all pitch in and send Gabe and the rest of the Valve dev team back to grade school so then can learn to count to 3 and make some 3rd entries to some of their series'? To name a few that could use third entries: -Half Life 3 -Left 4 Dead 3 -Portal 3 -Team Fortress 3 and probably more I am not thinking of but you get my point...
  • @ 45 I could give a shit what Abrams does with Valve... But he shouldn't be involved with Star Wars at all. I already could give a fuck less about Valves Games much less if they are made into movies or not.
  • Apparently e1 here thinks Abrams did all 6 seasons of Lost. lol He handed over the reigns of the show very early on. And does that with alot of his projects.. He's an idea man, he comes up with brilliant ideas, spells out how he wants em done, or does them himself, then once the wheels are a turning, lets someone else manage it, and goes to the next project.
  • And by idea i don't mean Star Trek, I meant the idea of doing a modern Star Trek, while a few ppl may of had the idea, only one did it... By the way, its already confirmed hes directing Episode VII... This isn't a rumor, it's about a week and half old
  • I'm surprised no one has mentioned this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4drucg1A6Xk That's how a portal movie should be done
  • cant say im happy about this, JJ isn't as good as people make him out to be, super 8 was meh, 'lets make people sympathy for an alien who wants to go home but yet just wrecks everything and kills people for no reason' and lens flare every film to fuck and lost jesus Christ did that go to crap after season 3 and yes it is the worst ending to a tv series ever don't remember many people liking the ending and his 'if the characters don't ask the question you wont find the answer' is just plain stupid and both half life and portal will not equate to film very well, if freeman speaks half life fans will be pissed and if he don't speak non half life fans wont like him same goes for chell
  • The only good thing about Lost's ending was seeing Shepard give Locke that awesome Falcon Punch.
  • Long overdue for another left 4 dead!
  • the only good thing about the ending of Lost, was that it was the ending.
  • @46 - I don't think there's ever going to be a Team Fortress 3. It's because the PC version is doing really, really good right now. Also with all their constant updates on the PC, you can call that Team Fortress 3! I just wish they did that for Xbox. Mann vs Machine on Xbox would be so cool!
