DmC: Devil May Cry

DmC: Devil May Cry Falls Short of Capcom Expectations
Written Tuesday, February 05, 2013 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

Capcom has reduced its target for DmC: Devil May Cry, following the disappointing performance of Ninja Theory’s reboot.

The publisher had hoped to ship two million copies of the game by the end of its financial year. With one million copies shipped as of January 2013, that figure is now expected to hit 1.2, 800,000 short of the initial target. PC sales, however, are not included.

DmC has led a somewhat troubled life, with fans responding negatively to Ninja Theory’s creative direction and the title performing poorly despite critical acclaim.

Launch week sales numbers for DmC compare poorly to those of its predecessor, Devil May Cry 4, coming in at less than one half in Japan and around a third in the UK. The poor numbers cast doubt over the future of the series.

loved the gameplay and the artistic style of limbo but hated Dante, and I hope that they continue using ninja theory to see what would they bring next in their second installment.

The thing is capcom destroyed most of their other franchises and fooled their customers with locked content they allready payed for...now its hard to gain the trust of the gamers back even with a solid game like this

Its a shame that people are not buying the game because of its reboot. It is an amazing game that shouldn't be missed out on. I have played all the dmc and this is by far my favourite out of all of them. People need to stop spitting their dummies out the pram because of the changes. Ninja Theory have done a brilliant job with this game and i would certainly love to see more from them.

This is what happens when the idiot fanboys would sooner shit themselves over the reboot being a complete travesty. Rather than actucally give the game a chance.

Congratulations, you fucking idiots. You've likely killed any chance at seeing another Devil May Cry game, ever, because you didn't bother giving this one the chance it rightly deserved.

Some need to grow up and stop being condescending morons to those who don't like it. People are entitled to an opinion and shouldn't have to be attacked for it. In the end, people will vote with their wallets, as proven here.

People just don't like the fact that an iconic character was turned into an emo guy with an attitude problem. Imagine if Nintendo decided Mario should be a 6'5" muscular blonde guy that drove a Corvette, people would be confused.

It's a shame that the industry needs immediate targets like this all the time. I plan on getting this but with work and other commitments I don't have time at the minute. I do want to pick this up though so hopefully ninja theory will keep the reboot going. It does look very good.

Hoo boy nobody sure this coming huh? The fans said we don't want this and what we got was hostility all around. Don't be entitled, it's about the white hair isn't it. This is a good game shut up and like it!

If every reviewer gave this game a ten it still would have sold shit. You know the reasons why. And no Capcom we don't want a DmC dmc 2 before you actually try that. Back to the drawing board for dmc 5 with ye.

It's not so surprising when you consider the series has had a 5 year break between DMC4 and this reboot.

Between the polarising change in art direction, the much stiffer competition (including the considerably more hyped Metal Gear Rising due only a month later), being released very shortly after Christmas and the sharper economic downturn that's kicked in since DMC4 was released...

Well, that's an awful lot of factors which aren't going to help it.

As for sales in Japan, well... we know this isn't entirely without precedent, Final Fantasy XIII-2 sold only ⅓ the quantity that Final Fantasy XIII did in it's first week.

The more hardcore Japanese gamers also tend to be... shall we say a little suspicious of foreign companies taking over much popular franchises.
For example, the Metroid Prime games did very very poorly in Japan.

@6 what the hell are you on buddy?! Yes, Ninja Theory developed it, but the game belongs to Capcom - bad sales figures mean bad news for Capcom.

This article and the subsequent one about Resident Evil makes me wonder who at Capcom is setting these targets?! They are obviously not particularly good at their job.

@20 You hit the nail on the head there about Japanese gamers, that why the COD series isn't massive over there.

This is one im going to pick up eventually but the simple fact is ive got a massive backlog of games already and theres too many other AAA titles out over the next two months. Maybe they should have looked at delaying this till the summer maybe???

@16 people are only entitle to their opinions once they've given the game the chance it deserves. And these sales numbers say most of them haven't.

It's kinda like voting. You don't get to bitch about who gets elected if you didn't bother getting off your ass to go and vote.

These "diehard" fans of the franchise are not entitled to an opinion of a game they couldn't be bothered to play. I don't give a shit if they redesigned Dante to more closely resemble Donald Duck. If the game is technically sound in the same respects that the previous installments were. Then their opinions based solely on cosmetic appearances are completely invalid.

@24

CoD doesn't really have anything to do with what I was saying.
That wasn't a Japanese series that started being developed by a foreign company.

The fact that First Person Shooters simply aren't a dominant genre in Japan is completely different.
(Though that said, Metroid Prime becoming one was probably a big factor in its Japanese sales performance. Not just being developed by a US company).

To everyone complaining about those of us who "haven't given the game a chance," a lot of us DID play the demo. And we didn't like the demo. So please, explain to me why we would go and spend $60 dollars on a game we didn't like? For some of us, the game proved to be exactly what we thought it would be. It isn't a true Devil May Cry game. The game would be just fine if it had a different title and character names and such. I probably would have bought it and played it then. But some of us made up our minds to stand against it, and that is exactly what we are doing.

Everyone who is giving the thumbs down to people like #15 need to seriously re-evaluate their stances on the gaming market DmC is a true marvel to the franchise and after playing it and getting to know the characters you come to appreciate all of them.

SPOILER ALERT

For those of you fuckers who are complaining about early concept designs (because that's what they were) he gets white hair at the end

END SPOILER

I digress though. As others have stated on here thanks for fucking the DMC franchise. This re telling had so much potential and they left it on a cliff hanger.

Their more games, smaller development teams model is going to backfire also. How about concentrate on one or two games at a time and give each it's proper attention. Capcom's greed is the catalyst.

Great game, the haters can use all of their alts to thumbs down support it doesn't make the game less great. @29, no, you didn't. You went in convinced, and never gave it a chance if you hated it, it isn't even a question. Playing it (if you actually bothered to) just to gain credibility when trolling it, well, doesn't give you credibility at all. Liking it on a personal level is a matter of taste, but only to a point--it's objectively a good game. I hate God of War, but it's objectively good.

As for sales, it's been bad times for most games sales the last couple years though, we're in end of generation decline.

The problem these days is that Capcom have given themselves a pretty poor reputation in recent times with things like the on-disc dlc and it's hard for gamers to trust them. On top of that the Resident Evil franchise has been getting worse in my opinion with the last 2 titles. Which is a shame as i loved the early games

@37

no not good news. If this game doesn't get the respect it deserves then the DMC franchise is finished. Also so what if Dante is gay do you have a problem with people of the homosexual sort? Also I'm guessing you're one of the people who are going off early concepts because a picture of Dante getting sucked off by a bunch of female angels hardly seems of the "gay" sort. Kudos to you though. You keen motherfucker.

Game was boring, the new Dante looks horrible and it did nothing new with the series. There was no reason to reboot it. The fact that DMC4 sold better should be a sign that they F'ed up big time changing so much. It has become a generic beat 'em up.

Nice to see this coming back to bite them in the ass. Stop rebooting these lousy games as only a handful of people wanted them back. Do something different for a change, make a new IP. It's time Capcom went the way of the Dodo, or just keep your crap in Japan.

DmC is a great game, anyone telling you otherwise is either lying or just can't get out of the old Dante love.

But to Capcom, that's what happens when you don't end your current story before rebooting the IP. Everyone would have been damn Happy and appreciated the new direction if you had completed the old dante saga before rebooting.

And Hats off to Ninja Theory for making a great game. I do miss the old DMC world but yours too is hell lot of crazy

I just love all of these people telling others how they should spend their money. I rented it, and played it up until mission 11 and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the first DMC game.

Why should I be compelled to shell out $60 when I have a family to support and other games that can and will hold my interest.

That is great some people liked this DMC, and it's great that others didn't. This is what makes us human! This is why we have so many different genres. I speak with my wallet, and I didn't enjoy this game. I don't think anyone should avoid it like the plague, but I got really bored with the characters and the story which is why I invest in games like this.

So all the haters keep hating, and all the lovers keep loving the game. Just stop telling people how to spend their money!

Its a shame, the first and third DmC games were incredible. I liked 4 also, even with a new main character with Dante popping in and out occasionally. They tried to reboot a series that didn't need a reboot IMO. This goes to show making too many changes scares way too many people. See Resident Evil 6, Gears of War Judgment, Halo 4 etc etc.

And to be fair I haven't played this new DmC yet so I don't have an opinion on it, other than I don't like how they changed Dantes look. But I do intend to buy the game and try it out.

DmC: Devil May Cry is great game, great story and gameplay as well nice graphics but... but ... it is very short that didnt bring many players as well new look Dante and show on game cover. Those everything affect this game sales. Another reason every January of years alway come with shortage of money for everyone in homes since Christmas over and most of people saving a bit, worked out some bills after Christmas's biggest shopping spents of years. Those also could affect. DmC maybe should release in Feb or March instead of Jan (bad month to release any games or movie dvds or anything to buys).

@41 No im not Im very open with that stuff...but if you do a mediocre character like this new "Dante" to replace a cool like the old one and naming it Dante so the game can sell. They even had to change his hair to white because it was having a very bad reception. Its Capcom's fault for rebooting sth that didn't need a reboot. Then try to buy hard-die fans and the ones that love Dante by naming an awful charac as "Dante" ... they have to be crazy and Im happy it did bad, so they wont continue it.

I love old Dante and old DMC, yes the old is metro and thats cool!

Maybe will won't have DMC in some time because of this failure, but Capcom is not stupid they know DMC sell, so maybe in some years will see another DMC with old Dante, they wont let DMC die Im sure. I can wait another 4 years for a good game this time.

I must confess, the more I play the demo the more I want to get it. It's on my list of "games I'll pick up one day on a whim". But damn, Dante is such a little punk. I've only played DMC4, so I'm no expert, but it seems to me that Ninja Theory did a serious disservice by changing him up so much.

I've been a diehard Devil May Cry fan for years. Played all the original games, loved the special edition of DMC3 above all else, it's one of my personal top 5 games ever made. I've only played the demo for this reboot. The gameplay was good, great even. I've replayed the demo multiple times and greatly enjoyed it, it's a lot of fun, and I anxiously await my next paycheck to pick up the full game.

BUT, it isn't Devil May Cry. The reboot is far too drasticly different for me, and many other long-time fans, to ever feel it's a true DMC title, and it's doubtful we could ever be convinced otherwise. The rebooted forms of each character pale in comparision to their original counterparts.

What people saying that we didn't "give it a chance" don't seem to understand is that there's more to a beloved series than just gameplay. Story, character, environments, they're all important to the series that we love. This reboot doesn't have any of those. Sure, some people won't give it any chance because of Dante's hair, or the game engine, or other equally childish reasons, but most fans DID try it. They did play the demo, and they didn't like it.

Like I said though, I plan to pick it up as soon as possible, because judged on it's own, it's a damn fun game. But, judged as a Devil May Cry game, it's rubbish.

I said after it came out I would get back on here & post a Big "I TOLD YOU SO!" I told you all it would suck & bomb & it did!
Do not ever change the main character on a well known series!
Continue always to step up game-play & graphics!
They failed altogether...
I hope they continue with another DMC with this in mind & lesson learned!

Its funny when people are saying Capcom deserves the low sales and all that it seems rather sad. I can understand people's reasoning for not buying the game such as not liking the demo, or the story but hating a game because you dont like how the characters looks seems rather sad also as mentioned earlier january is usually a bad time for game releases and the initial sales did not match up to DMC 4 which was an alright game but as the year goes on the sales might pick up when people have more money or the game goes on sale plus with the upcoming vergil's downfall DLC and Bloody Palace due in febuary the game might get even better. I personally love the game , since i nearly have 100% completion and around 40 hours of play time the possible future DLC's are keeping me hooked also it is ninja theory's best game and i hope they get a chance to create a sequal or capcom making the continuation of the main arc but i think on the whole the dante storyline has reached its peak considering he has surpassed sparda, defeated mundus, defeated the nasty demon argosax which makes me ask the question of if they make a DMC 5 and continue the nero story arc will people pull the same show they did for the new DmC or does the DMC franchise have to be stuck with dante as lead till people get bored of him
