The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, First Details Emerge

CD Projekt Red has finally, officially announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Heading to all available “high-end platforms,” which presumably means next-gen consoles,  Wild Hunt will be an open world game, a first for the series.

Just how big will the game be? Pretty bloody big. Up to 20% bigger than Skyrim, even. Traveling from one end of the map to the other end will take 30-40 minutes on horseback, with areas streamed in live so as to avoid loading times. That's courtesy of CD Projekt RED's new CRED Engine 3.

The structure of the game encompasses crafting and monster hunts, important side-quests and an overarching main storyline in which Geralt attempts to rescue loved ones from his arch nemesis. Apparently, the witcher has now reached a stage where he is fed up with helping everyone else.

At the heart of the enhanced features is monster hunting, in which you source potion ideas and tactics from books and townsfolk with which to take on beasties. Time of day will also be a factor for some of these monster confrontations. Preperation is key.

All of this ties in nicely with the source material, as Geralt is a monster hunter. That’s his job. But in the previous games this element has been slightly underplayed. In Wild Hunt it looks like this is coming to the forefront.

Skill trees will be developed beyond those in The Witcher 2. Secondary forms of spells will let you add things like a 360-degree blast. Work is in place to make the swordplay more graceful, with new strikes and abilities that increase things like parrying and stamina. A new mutation mechanic has also been mentioned, but we don’t know any further details.

Building the story around Geralt himself? More monster hunting against big, gruesome beasties? A larger game with Roach, Geralt’s horse? Looks like we were thinking along the right lines when we wrote our What We Want From The Witcher 2's Sequel piece lat year.

All of this information comes from Game Informer, the latest edition of which has been summarised by NeoGaf.

These few details are already intriguing me. Better get around to playing The Witcher 2 sometime soon.

I've said it elsewhere, but I love these guys. Absolutely fantastic studio - not just because of the games, but because of the attitudes they have towards creativity, independence, different platforms, piracy and their fan base. They really have got it right.

I own both of the current Witcher games, and I've hardly dabbled in either of them yet (I have a large backlog - I'm really looking forward to playing them), but purely because of the company ethics and attitudes they can already have my money for the next one.

I really wanted to enjoy witcher 2 but something just didnt click for me...possibly the linearity as it started out so promisingly but soon I lost interest. Hopefully the open world will fix my issues with 2.

Telling producers from company X Y and Z to shove it should be the number one priority for game studios and development. I am looking at you EA and Activision....But, mostly at EA. You guys effed up on Mass Effect 3 and hopefully(but not likely) won't screw up Dead Space 3.
Looking forward to the Witcher 3. Loved the two other games.

@3 Yeah, if any other developer had made the Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition the extra content would have been, at the very least, accessed via a single use redeem code or, more likely, paid DLC. I'll pre-order everything CD Projekt Red make.

@6 Exactly! Publishers are a bunch of no-talent suits. A company like Bioware, after the success of KotOR and Mass Effect, should have been able to tell EA "Here are the rules. We make the games. We make the decisions. You pay for marketing."

Looks like there making an absolute epic, so looking forward to what CD Projekt Red can do with a next gen Witcher game, such a great company, such a great franchise...imo The Witcher 2 was amazing, it takes time to get your head around the combat system in the beginnig, but once you've worked that out it really draws you into it's world... it's a brilliant game.

@9, I couldn't agree more with you there, so many games that wouldn't of been ruined (or aspects ruined) by pushy publishers, you don't put a piece of art in a gallery before it's finished, the same can be said of a game, a game is a piece of art.

I played the first one on PC, the second on 360, and who knows where I'll play the 3rd? Here's hoping they put out something like Mass Effect's decision making comic book.

As long as this game has controversial decisions to make that don't create the illusion that some games do, this'll be a day one purchase for me.

I read about this before i went to sleep. I think that was a bad idea, because it got me very excited.

I'll definitely support these devs.

"Traveling from one end of the map to the other end will take 30-40 minutes on horseback"

In Skyrim, it takes me longer than that. Just 20% bigger? Why not make it 30%, 40% or even 50% bigger?

I'm so fucking glad this is already on its way out! Witcher 2 is now one of my favorite games of all time, and everything 3 is looking to do can only be better. CDPR never disappoints, so I know this one'll be the smash they're looking for!

@9 - Of course its all the fault of the publisher >_> I stay clear of making comments like that as I do not know a great deal of how the inside of the industry works and i'm pretty sure neither do you or most other people who generally spout it at any chance they get. One thing im sure of is that the publisher gets the ruling hand because they put the cash down.

The title makes more sense if you're familiar with the game's lore.

Now...if only I can get The Witcher released for a console, then things would be grand.

"Apparently, the witcher has now reached a stage where he is fed up with helping everyone else."

But yet will still help everyone. Without the classic game situation of an NPC saying "Hi, these are all my problems, but since I just met you, they are all your problems too!" games like this would be nothing but a world to walk aimlessly around in. Which isn't really a bad thing. I found most of my aimless wandering in Skyrim was more enjoyable than actual quests!

So finally The Witcher 3 jump in a biggest Open World. Pre order it once game dated, next generation consoles, price. I will support CD everything they do with next series of The Witcher!!!!

@9 - Had it just been a publishing deal, they could have. They sold out though, so EA took over lock, stock and barrel. To see an untalented hack like Casey Hudson in charge of Mass Effect is so sad.
