Despite Wii having really good games, when I want to play games I don't think "I'm going to play Wii," for whatever reason. I'd rather play xbox because I can talk to friends. The only reason I would want a PS3 is for Demon's Souls and a couple of other games, but not enough to warrant me buying one.
I think that in a few years I'll still be picking up Xbox 360 games that I've never tried and playing them because there's so much content. As long as Microsoft doesn't pull some BS with Live that is.

I think the Wii did so well in the beginning because there was a huge hype about the motion controlling, but by now a lot of people have realized that most Wii games are average at best (of course, there are a few exceptions). Wii might still rule retirement homes and the rooms of little girls, but gamers better stick to the 360 or the Playstation.

Despite the negatives, tmg100 doesn't make an entirely invalid point.
All in all, I bought 4 Xbox 360's.
One was in upgrading from a Xenon Pro console to a Jasper Arcade model because of a 2nd RRoD, a mere one year after MS had repaired it.
I subsequently upgraded to a Slim model when that was released due to it's larger HDD and quieter, more energy efficient and to put all reliability problems behind me.
Finally, I got a silver LE Reach console.
Now my case is far from typical, but it's not outrageous to suggest that a percentage of Xbox 360 owners have bought at least 2 consoles.
As for the Wii, it's not really a surprise.
The market reached saturation point some time ago.
That's why Nintendo have now released a new console.

How does this compare to installed user base though. Surely this is a non story? I'm on my third XBox after two failures but still on my first Wii (it's a long one folks!). Sure the XBox gets far more (ab)use but the sales figure alone quoted as 'over lifetime' is meaningless unless correlated with user base or average console lifetime.

I have bought 3 Xbox's, although I still have two of them are currently working.
Should imagine most earlier buyers have got through at least 2.
There sales in the last two years have still be quite impressive though.

@15 only if it breaks down within a certain time frame, i think its 3 years for the traditional RROD but there are a number of failures that have come from them and they break after an unspecified time frame so thats not always true.
also it wasent as easy to get them fixed when it first started happening and MS were in denile over it... and eventually you get sick of dealing with them

@16 I was wondering the same thing.
As for buying multiple 360s, I bought an original black Elite off of a friend's brother for $100 a few years ago. A few months later, it red ringed. They repaired it (for free) and sent it back (with a month of free Xbox Live) and I've had the same one ever since. That was a few years ago. Technically I've only bought one 360, but mine doesn't count for sales figures since I bought it from someone else.

I have bought three xbox 360's over the years, and the Wii I bought for my son was sold two years later because he never played it. After the intial fascination and a month of playing it, he powered it up exactly five times in the following 2 years.

I'm have PURCHASED 5 360s. I still have 4 of them, one under each tv in my house, and one in a box for on the go fun.
I purchased the original white fat pro about a year after it came out. I used the warranty to replace that one three times. It eventually died, but I towel tricked it back to life and GAVE it away with a caveat that it would probably die.
I purchased a black elite when I sent my original white in for its first fix. I have had it fixed under warranty once.
I purchased a slim 250 right after the kinect came out because I was running out of room on my hd.
I purchased the GOW 320 when it came out because I was out of room on my hd.
I purchased the Star Wars 320 during the summer on clearance because it is cool.
I would have purchased the new halo 360 if it came with a larger hard drive. I am down to less than a gig free on my GOW hard drive with no disc games installed. I recently bought a couple 32 gb thumb drives to keep me going until the new xbox comes out.
(Cool story, bro)

Also, the reason the Nintendo Wii sells more is because it's cheaper, if it was the same price as other 7th generation consoles it would probably be around the 70 million mark too.

I got RROD several times. I had a launch console and then it seemed like every year I had the problem. The last time I got it they said it was no longer in warranty and much to my anger I purchased another 360. So its not case closed but there's an extra xbox right there.

My Wii got traded after the laser on my original 360 went (original console). Now have 2 slims (reach and gears) and no problem with either, touch wood. I got my original 2nd hand, so I've only ever bought 2 360's from new.
I'm sure you all really enjoyed that story lol

I hate how everyone bashes the Wii. It is a great console and it brought something new to the table when it was first released. Granted, the Wii U isn't much involving new tech, but the entire concept was pretty incredible and has set the stage for both competitors' take on motion gaming.
Let's face it, most people were first exposed to video games through Nintendo. Most kids don't pick up an xbox controller and start playing Halo at age 5...most are introduced to Pokemon and Mario and Sonic, probably because of TV and other media. I know the Wii may not be the best console, but it definitely has some fun games.
I guess it is about time for it to be outsold, but I think people should definitely give the Wii more credit.

Wii will always be known as the novelty system it introduced the new feature and milked it for 6 years. It's hard to get past seeing it like this as wii sports was the main reason to buy it and personally I haven't bought a game for my wii in 5 years since launch

Nah..You are wrong
1.The warranty time was increased far litter in console life cycle, so many people got wasted on their consoles.
2.At start of generation MS didn't covered RROD at certain places or clauses, don't remember though but people complained a lot
3.X360 starting motherboards before mid 2010 (I guess) were subjected to RROD a lot
4.MS doesn't covers worldwide warranty, only in selected countries. They have increased with time.
So you see a lot of RROD consoles will be responsible for sales.
