Older THQ Games Will be Sold Off in the Coming Weeks, as SEGA and Crytek Outline Future

More news following the auction of THQ’s assets earlier in the week, including the possible sale of the publisher’s older IP, and updates from new Relic owner SEGA and Homefront developer Crytek.

First up it has been revealed that the publisher’s older IP is set to be sold off, meaning series such as Homeworld, Red Faction and De Blob could find themselves in new homes.

That’s according to THQ president Jason Rubin. He told Game Informer, “There will be a separate process to sell off the back catalogue and IP. That process will take place in the coming weeks.”

Meanwhile, SEGA has confirmed the acquisition of Company of Heroes developer Relic Entertainment. "We are incredibly excited to welcome Relic Entertainment into the SEGA family,” said the publisher.

To go along with the announcement, Company of Heroes 2 game director Quinn Duffy has published an open letter to fans.

"The good news is that Relic and Company of Heroes 2 are intact," he wrote. "Relic will continue moving forward with Company of Heroes 2, but we have some gaps on our team in the short term.

“What's next? I can only personally speculate that Relic has unique value for SEGA; that they liked what we were doing, and that they will want us to continue what we are doing. I know they're excited.

“Apart from that, we don't have a lot we can talk about yet – if you can use Google, you likely have the same information we do.

“We promise we'll try to tackle the transition as efficiently as possible so that we can get back to Company of Heroes 2 as quickly as we can.”

For Crytek, which purchased the rights to Homefront during the THQ auction, there would seem to be a little more stability.

“Since we first reached an agreement to develop Homefront 2, we’ve been firm believers in the IP and its potential to excite and amaze players,” said Yerli in an official statement.

“Our cooperation with THQ was always positive and we would like to thank them for all their support over the last two years and express our sympathy to those affected by the recent events at the company.”

Crytek’s general Nick Button-Brown added, “Nothing has changed with regards our development of the game, and we look forward to sharing the finished product with players.”

On the fate of the Darksiders franchise and its developer Vigil, however, nothing more has been revealed.

I really do hope Platinum Games picks up Vigil/Darksiders. It'd be really sad if they were the only ones left unbought.

To be honest I think Platinum games is more interested in the Darksiders license and not in buying Vigil. I'm hoping for a good ending to this, as well as no server shutdowns, a new Red Faction/Homeworld/Freespace game(s) and as little problems for the developers effected.

Also wondering when we'll see Saint's Island or Dead Row lol

@5 Nope, they bought Relic and the CoH IP, they don't have the 40K license.

company of heroes? i bought that game on PC like a decade ago, they trying to ride off the strength of one game?

your sequel is long overdue shut up and just get it finished so we can all download PC ISO rips for free like we did with the first game and give you no sales.

just been on the website, apart from company of heroes they are all mediaocre games that never heard of and i loved strategy.

we need age of empires back, who made that?

CoH was released in 2006 so your decade claim is way off. Their have been two standalone expansions since as well as a short lived MMO. You may not have a been a fan of their over work but most if it has been extremely well received.

You love Strategy and don't know who made Age of Empires - you don't even make a mediocre troll.

OK, I've read up a bit on the 40K licence. It's not that Sega definitely didn't buy it, it's currently unknown for sure. They could well have bought it, or alternatively Games Workshop could have had the right to refuse the sale of it's IP and have instead chosen to deal separately. If such is this case I'd say that Sega will still end up with the rights as they have already dealt with GW to acquire Warhammer. There is also a chance though that GW don't want both licences with one studio and want someone else to take on the 40K licence.

My personal little dream is that Zenimax dropped out of the bidding for Relic as they were given first refusal to negotiate for the 40K licence. Won't be true of course, but it's a nice little dream nonetheless.

Tbh, I expect in the coming week or 2 we'll find that Sega have the 40K rights as well, but we shall see.
