@5 It's simple, just don't buy it or play the SP on a guest gamertag and you'll never have to tough the MP. People will no doubt rant at me for deciding not to buy a game based on its achievements now. To a degree you have a point, but so do I. I say it's not stupid. I have a right to choose what I buy and what games I support. I whole-heartedly do not support developers who tack on unwanted MPs to traditionally SP games simply for the sake of map pack dlc sales/online stats or whatever. If I were to buy the game it would be interprested by the developers as support for their apprach to making games/that people want more MPs. My wallet is the only true power I have to contribute to stopping crap MPs being added in. |

...oh. Was hoping this was going to be a fun extra (which seems reasonable given Uncharted's MP is a lot of fun) but it sounds a bit flat to me. Hopefully with some patching and balancing it improves a bit, else its going to be a long grind to level 60. |

I've said it before, but not every game needs a multiplayer component, and for a game like Tomb Raider it could be disastrous. There are many factors, but essentially: • A poorly implemented MP mode will drag down the rating that the game receives; thus a game which may have received a score of 10 for a superb campaign, will suddenly see a score of maybe 7 or 8 when the MP is taken into account, and for those that listen to reviews of a game before buying, this could be very impactive. • There will also those that will protest with their wallets; they will not buy (either initially or at all) because of their views of having MP foisted into a game that they love. • There will be some that won’t buy because they won’t want to attempt, or be able to get, all the achievements because some are linked to online play (a minority, I accept, but some none-the-less). Ultimately, there are the big 4 when it comes to multiplayer shooters: Gears, Halo, CoD and Battlefield. I’m not suggesting that this means no other game should attempt MP, but if you’re going to do so, you should approach it in the manner that these 4 do: create a MP game and then (to an extent!) tack on the campaign. Finally, it's actually refreshing to read an article that speaks the truth, rather than running scared of telling it for fear of being excluded from hands-on sessions for future game. |

Lee said it himself, "This isn’t innovation, invention, or even progress; it’s just a rather bland and predictable me-too mode that fails to separate itself from the pack." Not purchasing this game. I do not wish to support the Devs this time around. I'll save myself the money. |

"Dante's haircut" Really? Does everyone have to jump on the haircut bandwagon these days. That stopped becoming relevant about a month after it was announced. Anyway, Change is great but big companies do it wrong. DMC got rebooted. Why? For change? Dead space 3 got turned into an action shooter. Why? Tomb raider (and in fairness every other single player game) tacks on mp. Why? The list goes on. Change is a great thing. But don't fuck with existing franchises. Create a new one. Anarchy reigns is something new and is my GOTY already. It tried to make a unique game and succeeded. If you hop online and learn the game mechanics with the single player (that's what the single player is a big tutorial it's not the meat of the game) you WILL enjoy it. |

I'm just blown away at the significant amount of achievements for MP. AC: Brotherhood did the same thing with adding, in my opinion, some pretty tough and time consuming achievements. They later learned their lesson by putting in relatively easy ones for Revelations and AC3. I can see the same thing happening to this series, albeit MP is still a useless addition. I support all who say it doesn't belong in every game because it doesn't. To everyone saying "you don't have to buy it or play it", get your head out of your ass and get real. The whole reason people buy these games is for the single player experience, and if a game such as this comes out to which they have dedicated many hours then why should they stop playing such a game? I've never played Tomb Raider and was going to give this a chance, however with the serious grinding needed for a mode I'm not favourable too I will be giving it a swift pass. @15 I'd much prefer spending time on a single player achievement than having to grind and rely on a bunch of dumbasses online. |

| See, I'd like a multiplayer game along the lines of what Tomb Raider's is obviously trying to get at, but it seems like it's going to be a huge fail. The idea of a survival multiplayer is brilliant, but the fact that guns and traps at specific points (as opposed to being able to set them at whatever point your want) are involved just makes it TOO generic. |

@26, something like that exists already. Uncharted! I agree that MP doesn't need to be added to every game, Bioshock saw that and took it out. Hell you can even do what Vicreal Games (Dead Space 2) and Yager (Spec Ops: the Line) did and not put achievements in for your MP. But that would mean that Crystal Dynamics would have to come up with a decent achievement list and not the shitty one they have now. You got 9 achievements just for getting collectables alone. I don't support the decision to make this a multiplayer game (@12 those 4 started out the same place Tomb Raider is as well). No one liked the idea of Call of Duty having an online but look at it now. Even if we buy the game new, used or not at all. It won't stop Crystal Dynamics from trying again. Practice makes perfect (but no one will ever have a perfect MP) but you gotta at least give it a chance. If you don't like it then don't play it ever again. When they notice no one is playing their game online then they will probably start looking at ways to fix it. And yes the same point would be proven if you don't buy the game at all, but why would you miss out on what could be a great game just because YOU'RE to close minded?! |

@30 Do you lose sleep over other people exercising their free speech or right to spend their money as they see fit? But to answer your question, no matter how exaggerated or condescending, I don't lose sleep over it but it does lessen my fun. 100%ing is half the fun of games to me. Before Achievements, I gravitated towards collectathons and other games in which there was an explicit internal % counter, or x/xx collection counters. I want official feedback from the game on my progress. Same reason in games with morality alignment, I want morality bars. I prefer the explicit feedback to the point that games without it feel incomplete and less satisfying. Sucks for me. TR reboot though, it's just so needlessly tacked on that I feel compelled to voice my opinion and respond with a non-purchase. People bring up Mass Effect or Assassins Creed, but ignore that those are current gen games with no history. TR is going into four generations of tradition soon, it isn't the same as tinkering with a series five or six years old. |

Really dissapointing obsevervation by Lee, but also a little bit of a wake up call as well. For the first time, I'm starting to have a concern about this now. Personally I blame the popularity of online gaming, COD and the publishers themselves (all of them, not just CD) for making tacked on MP, making games too MP centric and online passes the norm in this industry today. I still havn't played through Resident Evil 6 yet and I'm not sure I want to with those tacked on MP modes Capcom has been tacking on since RE5. I am honestly contemplating letting two of my most beloved franchise die.. RE and TR... Maybe I won't play either.. |

Jesus. you people act like they're forcing you to play it. Just because it's there, and has achievements tied to it, does NOT mean you have to play it. Yeah, blah, blah. This is a site for achievements. But who cares? If you want the game for the single player. Buy it. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face. Or in this case, skip it entirely just because there are achievements tied to MP. That's a childish, bullshit mentality that really makes me think that the gaming population is little more than preteen crybabies that'd rather throw a fit than just play the parts they want to, and skip the parts they don't. I'm buying it. Do I support the decision to unclude MP? Nope. But I am stoked for the single player. So I'll play it. And I'l skip the MP. And so will anyone else that doesn't think it should be there. This game will include MP. Regardless of how much the fans protest. They've already dumped too much time and effort to just scrap it. So deal with it. Just enjoy the game for what it is. And skip the MP. Dead servers will send a clear enough message to Crystal Dynamics. Or, don't buy the game. But that'll be your own loss. Because, MP or not. The single player experience is shaping up to be pretty impressive. |

I love how people think they can tell someone how they should spend their hard earned money. I really like the old Tomb Raider games, and with the inclusion of MP (hoping there is no online pass) I will be renting this game as I don't agree with its inclusion. I'm glad this preview was written because I was on the fence about the game and hearing that MP feels completely tacked on and unbalance just turns me off of the game completely. I do want to see how this games single player pans out, however I don't care for this games MP. I see people mentioning Uncharted and I own all 4 (1 for PS Vita), and I hated the MP in that game as well. I'm voting with my wallet on this one. It is a double edge sword though because the game may get low sales and Square Enix may think Tomb Raider is dead and not give us a sequel when in fact it's just because of the MP. |

Multiplayer achievements? Man, I'm definitely not going to spend my money for a fun game since it has an optional mode in it that I don't like because I care more about digital points on a profile no one else really looks at than I do having fun with the game I spent my $60 on. You guys really need to stop spending $60 for 1000 points and start spending it for fun. The joke's on you, not Crystal Dynamics. They'll make a good chunk of money off this (most likely) brilliantly-received game, whereas you'll lose the experience of it because you'd rather have some points tied to an account that holds literally no meaning. Points are just points; experiences and memories hold real meaning. Grow up. |

There over 10 of my friends over Xbox Live they loved those like me not only achievements. So yes out there some and here some need achievements all times. It's just how Microsoft bring it when launched 2005 then many Xbox players so addicts to it. :) It's like danger and stupid people who want ruins, cheats, mods and hacks into game and mp. It's not just about having 1000 points, many people including myself like to complete every single aspect of a game, which includes collecting every achievement associated with it. I personally hate MP in games, but I accept that it is a part of many of them (I'm getting Aliens next month). I also like that I have games that are SP only, where the game is mine alone to enjoy. Sadly previous SP titles I've enjoyed now include MP as standard - RE, Mass Effect, DA3, Dead Space and now Tomb Raider. MP tends to bring out the worst in the gaming community, people say that gamerscore is a meaningless number, true it is. But so is a K/D ratio, somehow people love to talk about that. I was going to hold off and wait for reviews on this game, but the inclusion of MP has already helped me make my mind up. I won't be getting this. |

| @45 You say to start spending our money on fun. Err, we are! For us doing the MP to complete this is not fun, so we spend our money elsewhere. As for missing out on a games SP experience, I doubt we will loose sleep over it as there are so many other gaming choices out there which we would find more fun to play. Thus we are actually doing exactly what your telling us to do, yet you are still bitching... Remember, what one person thinks is fun, simply isn't to others. |

I've never before allowed achievements to factor into my game buying decisions, however I may make an exception in this case, but for all the people saying not playing a game because of them is silly, hear me out. I've watched all the campaign videos for this and think they look great, I have the survival edition preordered and was looking forward to a well executed campaign. I hear that MP has been added, which doesn't change my mind about getting it. I see the amount of achievements given to it by the developers. Now i'm worried. I still don't care about getting all of the achievements, and couldn't care less about the inclusion of MP, but to see that the dev team believe that the MP is 3rd of the game (15/50 MP 'chieves, not 25%) makes me wonder if the campaign hsan't had as much care and attention as it deserves. I've played too many games where the focus has shifted from campaign to MP and ruined the SP experience. Hopefully my worries are unfounded, but I'll be reading the reviews of this thoroughly to make sure the SP is worth my money before it's despatched. |

I understand MP can be a pain, but IMO it hasn't ruined any game. MP has not deterred me from purchasing a game. I'm not all for MP in EVERY game, however I can look past the "well it wasn't there before" argument and accept the fact that a dev wants to add longevity to a game. If I am paying $65 for a game (my apologies as I do not know the equivilant in other countries, I'm ignorant I suppose) I want that game to last me a while, whether it be a great engaging SP experience (Skyrim, Final Fantasy, etc) or I want the ability to play the MP well into the mornings with my friends (halo, cod, etc.). I want to feel like my money went a long way. It frustrates me paying X-amount for a game only to beat the SP in a few hours, then grind for the cheevos (not to say MP doesn't have time consuming cheevos). I hold judgement for the MP until I play it, however this does look fun. If the MP in any game is bad, I'll avoid it. That's just me, a broke college student who wants longevity from his games, whether that be through fun MP, or a long engaging story. |

I hate the multiplayer idea. Hated it ever since they announced it on Twitter. BUT I'm sick and tired of hearing people say "oh it looks just like Uncharted" and "the MP looks like an Uncharted clone!" It does not, in fact, look like Uncharted. You've seen little screenshots here and there, but don't go around saying "oh it's a clone!" when the game hasn't even come out yet. The MP? Uncharted doesn't have traps nor crossbows, and from what I saw, they were different from each other. Does it still look shitty? Yes, and if I wasn't a gamerscore whore I'd never touch the MP. But I'm really getting agitated by everyone comparing this to Uncharted (which was a crappy game in itself). |

I'll be buying this but I won't even look at the MP. There aren't many games where I can honestly say I enjoyed the MP aspect. I really don't like the fact that some manufacturers or publishers tack on the MP knowing that the only way their game is going to have any longevity is MP and I really don't like the companies that charge to activate their MP... case in point the Resident Evil fiasco some time back where they were charging to unlock 96kb of code. |

I cannot stand the fact that developers feel they MUST without question add some form of MP to their games. There are plain and simply some games where it just does not belong. Tomb Raider is one of those games. And while I personally will not be buying this game (right out of the gate it gets a 7/10 because of the 30% MP achievements and more likely a 6/10 because one of those achievements is a level 60 grindfest which just sucks the fun out of everything), I hold nothing against those who choose to do so. I will rent this title and play the campaign on an offline account so it does not screw with my completion rating (I already have enough games doing that). However, I need to ask you all a question: I have read other articles regarding this game that state the campaign is, at best, 10 hours of play time. Why would you pay full price ($60) for a 120-campaign with a tacked on MP? And what are the chances they have DLC just waiting in in the wings that they will charge a total of another $40 for? Are you going to buy that too? My point is that if you do not appreciate the direction a developer is going with a certain title, you are doing a yourself, and everyone else, a disservice by paying the full nut and in essence, telling the company that what they have done is OK. Just my opinion. Thank you for your honesty in this article, Mr. Bradley. |
