It's evolution....survival of the fittest.
Blockbuster have failed to keep up with companies like CEX, Amazon, Play, Netflix & LoveFilm.
I am going to miss my little trips to the local blockbuster, the nerdy chats with the staff about the latest games and DLC.
Would love to see a slimmed down version of the chain.

unfortunately, blockbuster didn't evolve at all while online services such as lovefilm and Netflix became more popular and easier to use.
Feel bad for those who will lose there jobs.

I think to survive you either need to very aware of what the market is like i.e. keeping prices low, and competitive or have a really loyal customer base. I know of a video shop near me that has been going for years, way before Blockbuster was about, but its doing just fine, and its because they have a personality and have loyal customers who they have kept for years. Blockbuster has neither of these.
Im not surprised at all they are going under, its a shame that so many peopel will lose jobs, but when you offer 1 game for 2 nights at £5, compared to someone like Lovefilm who offer 2 games a month for about £5 you can see why they are going down.

Yay, now there is going to be nowhere near where I live that sells video games, except for an extremely overpriced market stall that's only there on Tuesdays and Saturdays. My local Blockbusters is where I got my original 360 from on the launch day of Gears of War, and got LotR:BFME2 as well, so it's sad to see them go. I guess I'll pop in there today, see if there's any bargains to be had before they're gone for good.

I used to rent games when I were kid but when I were around 15 or 16 I stop rent games and movies from them because I not want rent games and movies from them anymore also SKY TV got sky box office movies so I easy book movies if I want watch. From 15 or 16 yrs old until now (27 yrs old) been used SKY Box Office. I using SKY Box Office in our SKY HD Plus moment and sometime I using Lovefilm of course. :)
I do not want to see other people losing jobs. It is pain in ass. Good luck to Blockbuster for their future.

i used to work in my local blockbuster (in the days of VHS mind ) so it will be sad for me if that store shuts as its part of my history, and a couple of people still work there from when i did so i wish them all good luck.
But i will not miss the overpriced games, nor the so called special offers, i do buy from them regularly (and grudgingly) as its the closest place to me, but havnt rented a film since i worked there (it was free for me lol ).
Anyways good luck to all the staff who may lose their jobs, unfortunately its the way things are going for a lot of companies......

The problem with internet companies is that they can't employ the amount of people that a retail company. Its the reason why they can sell things so cheap is because they have such cmaller overheads than physical stores.
People are struggling to find jobs as it is and if everything in the country went via internet then unemployment rate will rise. Meaning more people on the doll, thus taxes being raise for ordinary people having to pay for jobless. The lost of companies like this, is a lost in everyones pocket in the long run.

It sucks, because not so long ago, along with Gamestation, they had the all-round best prices and deals in my opinion.
Their deals of the week were the best, too!
I picked up Gears 3 pre-owned for £9.99 on one of their deals of the week. Places like GAME still had it for £39.99.
Hope they get through it!

Now, we sit and wait for red box...
It's always sad to see things go, but I've been expecting blockbusters to go under for years, even when I was younger, I had to wonder how they stayed afloat allot of the time.
One thing people need to remember about evolving the shopping industry, is that shopping has been around for thousands of years, changing to incorporate the online market won't just flick on all of a sudden and things continue, it'll take time to find the even ground, after millennia of tradition.

Maybe if the spineless bastards who run this country, made Amazon and lovefilm,(an amazon company) pay taxes blockbusters and hmv may have had a chance.
It's easy to crush your competition when you don't pay taxes (£3.3billion sales in 2010 with no tax, hate to think how much they made in 2011,2012).

I love blockbuster because i dont rent much and are handy if u rent hear and there unlike lovefilm and netflix plus i think blu rays have better quality than streaming hd.

#23 I think you can keep if closed down same time you rent right before closed down. You can keep since Blockbuster cannot do anything. So yeah.
Keep game in shelf.
Give friend if you not want keep it anymore.
Throw to bin if you not want keep or give friend.
Those options once Blockbuster down and you still have their games. Hehehe :)

While this is too bad Blockbuster UK lasted a fairly long time. Lots of the Blockbusters in Canada have been gone for over 2 years now. Although I must admit I didn't follow too closely, is this the first round of shutdowns?

I can't help but think of the South Park episode where Randy buys a Blockbuster. I am not surprised though because Lovefilm has an amazing postal service deal, I can get three discs be it games or movies plus streaming to my 360 for £15 a month, and there is no deadlines !!

@26, I think all the blockbusters in Canada closed. I remember reading something along the lines of Blockbuster US used us as collateral to keep their stores open. I never really followed it though.. I did pick up a ton of games on the cheap when our 2 closed though.

That's what happens when large companies are too arrogant to adapt to the market and the technology. Now Coinstar/Redbox are busy buying those worthless Blockbuster kiosks.
