The Walking Dead has racked up a whopping 8.5 million copies across all episodes and platforms.

That’s according to TellTale CEO Dan Connors who told the Wall Street Journal that the first season of the episodic series reached the figure after just seven months.

"November and December were our biggest months," said Connors. "It was the culmination of the product, the game of the year awards, the retail push and it still has a ton of head room in it."

Meanwhile, TellTale is also looking at a way in which to make your choices in the first season of the game meaningful in the second season. "We are definitely figuring out how to carry the saves over," Connors told Red Bull UK.

Did we tell you how much we love The Walking Dead? I think maybe we did.

  • Great game something different although haven't got round to it yet demo was great
  • this was the best arcade game ive ever played. I think its even better then the show.
  • Hopefully we'll be getting this in Australia soon. Looks so good.
  • I'm almost done with this (just finished Episode 4). I am excited to see how our save may carry over. I'm excited for Season 2 in general.
  • Hopefully with the R18 rating coming into play soon this will finally hit the shelves in Australia and New Zealand (I think some places in Europe too). I was a dumbass ordering it on Ebay FORGETTING about the region code, PAL is Australian/Europe only and NTSC is U.S only :/
  • Deserves more...
  • I'm assuming that 5 sold episodes (regardless of which) count as 1 copy?
  • Yay! Very much deserved, I know it was a lot of people's game of the year last year (including mine). Bring on season 2!
  • Roll on Season 2.... 1st Season had me hooked from day 1 but wish the release schedule would have been better organised
  • Best game of 2012 with no doubt. this game was so good in storytelling and choises, I cannot wait for Season 2
  • I completed the first 4 episodes, got anew Xbox, transferred my data over. Went to play episode 5 and it started from the beginning. Not very happy. The game is great but I wanted to finish the story with the choices I've made. Ah well. Worth another play so can't really complain, awesome game
  • Not supprising concidering ep 1 was free over xmas I'm sure Doritos dash done well at it's time aswell I downloaded it but havn't got around to trying it yet Need some more info on what these numbers mean
  • Do those numbers include the first episode being free for a while?
  • Shame it doesn't work anymore... I really want to finish it, but the game reset bug is dropping me gggaahhhh!!!
  • Amazing game but the fact my saves kept corrupting meant from episode 3 onwards my decisions never carried over which was a shame.
  • You have to cry when an interactive movie is many peoples GOTY :(
  • @16 Its called an adventure game. They came out long before the fifa and COd titles you have on your tag. also noticed you havent played it? 1.2.3 ....... MORON
  • #16 You don't have to.
  • Great game, but not GOTY for me. I liked to see what would happen in consequence to my actions which not many games have, but I would rather play a different game first. It was a nice expirence.
  • @ 5, just get yourself a US Xbox. That way you can play both regions.
  • @7 It says across all episodes so I think 1 episode counts as a copy. So its the eqiuvalent of 1.7 million buying all 5 episodes.
  • That sucks for me; I think I deleted my saved game. I figured if I ever played it again I would want to start over anyways. I guess I could replay season 1 to get ready for season 2?
  • this game was great until it decided to make me start again after 3 episodes, and save over my autosave in the process! just clicked continue on my game and suddenly the first episode is playing, i go back to main menu, and it's now the only save game there..... complete joke. nothing that can screw you over like that should even be considered as a potential GotY. no way i'm playing a 2nd season.
  • Terrible game but i still bought it. I guess just not my cup of Tea.
  • I thought the game was entertaining. Needed more shooting.. But story wise it was great.. Especially since I got all episodes for 800MSP.. Any more than that I would've never considered it.
  • Only time I loath living in Australia is when I see that I'm not apart of the Mullins of people who have enjoyed this game.
  • Really good game, but didn't all the choices wind up to the same ending? I ididn't notice much changing myself.
  • Amazing game really sucked me in the story was second to nothing and that's what this game was all about
  • @16, more like shout for joy, as it shows gamers are not just bloody violence hungry whores. This and Heavy rain on the PS3 are probably my favorite two games of this generation.
  • @16 I always cry when q crappy game like cod wins the story just feels so dam lazy ans the mp is the same basic thing as the cod before it and its not the interactive gameplay that gave the walking dead its success its the sheer quality writing that had its fans getting attached to It's characters
  • I'm so happy to read this; The Walking Dead is hands-down the most surprisingly good game I've ever played and it may well be my favourite game of all time. I could even argue it's the greatest game I've ever played... That sounds hyperbolic, but that's how I feel. It's a goddamn masterpiece. How Telltale could top this is beyond me.
  • this is a very good game and a pleasant change of pace. but considering it hardly requires any skill to complete, i disagree with it being GOTY.
  • Absolutely my favorite Arcade game of the year!!! Once i played the 1st Episode, i couldn't stop!!! Bring on Season 2 (ASAP!)
  • Richnaire TellTale Games!! Well done bought us awesome downloadable game last year. Look forward to see what their next project of new IP or even The Walking Dead 2 / Season 2. :)
  • amazing game, but can we please get past the obsession with Zombies? it has been increasing in numbers since the first Call of Duty Black-ops came out, thats when everyone was all like omg zombies are so cool!!! enough with it I say. gets old really fast. killing slow moving objects that are not scary at all.
  • Awesome, great game. Got it during the 'countdown to 2013' sale and so glad I did. :D But I was wondering, did they count the number of people who bought ALL episodes or just one (or maybe just episode 1). Since ep 1 was free during the aforementioned sale... ^_^' However, I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't get the other episodes after the playing the fantastic first one, apart from financial issues of course. Also, I doubt it matters that much, since it was only on 360 (I think) and looooads of people already bought them before that. So it's still a lot of sales, well done TellTale and bring on season 2! :-)))
  • I liked it. I just wish we could get a happy medium between overtly comic book visuals of TWD and the dead-eyed realism of Heavy Rain in this genre. TT has the cartoon stuff down, but I would like the formula applied to more serious stuff. In fact, I'd love it if it became a thing where all major tv shows got spin-offs like this. Firefly could return with minimal effort from the old cast! A House or Bones procedural spin-off with, say, Chase or Hodgins as the leads! This is the "original programming" direction I think MS should be investing in (as well as game shows and edutainment) instead of just financing traditional tv shows (if the rumors are true) for the future of Live/Xbox Video. Play to the strengths of interactive entertainment instead of trying to become a dinosaur media company.
  • (one of the) best games of 2012!
  • Game of the year for me.
  • Great game and story. BUT the game save reset bug needs to be addressed and fixed! It ruined 3 of my saves.
  • I think the price drop over Xmas contributed to these sales. I for one, bought the other four episodes after downloading, playing (and loving) episode one for FREE! Take heed Microsoft. LOWER PRICES = MORE SALES! FACT!!
  • Great story but not really an oustanding game.
  • I have read this news elsewhere and it seems that the number refers to individual episodes. I would be very surprised if most people didn't buy them all, but maybe a few tried the 1st and didn't like it. I loved it, but haven't finished it yet because of the amount of other stuff to play!
  • @#2 - Having read the comic to the current issue and having seen most of the TV program, I was astonished that the writing in this game was better than both of them. @#27 - The choices weren't there for the game to have branching story arcs or wildly different endings. They are there because you are choosing what kind of person you want Lee to be(come) and how you want other characters, especially Clementine, to react to him. I mean, seriously, just how different could the endings be anyway? @#35 - I think Left 4 Dead would like a word with you. ;)
  • Totally loved this game but need to finish episode 5! Think I'll finish it 2nite
  • @35 Yeah, L4D was before Blops, and Walking Dead was popular before both as the comic...
  • @35, zombie's have been a popular thing for allot longer the the CoD inclusions. They're a simple, weak enemy, in some ways, but horrifying in many other ways, 1 is only a danger if you're unarmed, inn numberes they incredibly dangerous. There's no complex ways to kill, no over the top ledgends, just destroy the head. The zombie is my favourite horror creature because of all of this, and more reasons. The only reason you don't find it scary, is because you've played CoD's over glorified action mini game, not a horror game, like they're intended to be in. This game gets the terror element very well, with allot of the 1 on 1 encounters to just how dangerous one can be. Never mind the modern reinvention of the zombie that 28 days later gave us. It's about time zombies get their praise, the walking dead is the hall mark of the praise, both in series, comic and even game, left 4 dead is the over the top action of running for you're life. Dead rising covering the fun beat em about side, resident evil... well... capcom tries, but they're lost what made the games good. They lost themself's. I've loved zombies personly since Resi Evil3, the first game I ever completed :3 Provided something is good, I welcome zombies. And for you're information, we still have about 60/70 issues to cover from the comics yet with the series, zombies aren't going anywhere fast. XD
  • @ #44; I thought I remembered a loading screen where it said that the choices I make changes the game, but didnt notice any big meaningful changes. Still one of the best games in recent times for me though :) it's all good!
  • Still waiting for the UK Disc so i can rent it
  • Ok game would have been better if your decisions actually had an effect on the game. Just a little pop up box saying they will remember but forget the next episode.
  • @17 you are aware that people play games on different tags or even at other peoples houses? 4 of my friends and me all had different choices but same ending. What is there to carry over to the next game? you play as Clem and long hair or short carries over?
  • @#48 - Seriously? Did you not get the choice to save either Carly or Doug? Or whether or not to shoot the woman or let her live to have more time to check for supplies? Or how about the one where you can decide whether or not to save Ben? Or dealing with Lee's arm? I'm sure there are probably others, but those stood out as significant changes to me. But again, I think the problem might come with people's expectation that the message about their choices affecting the story means those choices will affect the story drastically. Which, of course, isn't really the case. But there are changes and they are more subtle. It usually boils down to how the other characters react to you. Apparently there are 8 different configurations of your group that you can have at the end of Chapter 4 depending on your dialogue choices. Naturally, the group is simply made up of different combinations of the characters you've still got left, but it's still different. Not to mention pretty impressive from a developing perspective. @#51 - Perhaps there are some characters/things you've overlooked that could return down the road that remember/are connected to what happened in Season 1?
  • Now Telltale should bother trying to get it classified for us in New Zealand, as i heard they lumped us in with Australia with their strict game policy and didn't bother to try.
  • @32 What does skill have to do with making it GOTY?? last i checked it was GOTY because it was a great game, not because of the difficulty, i'm tired of your CoD kids who think difficulty matters when your playing a game that literally a six year old can be good at. @16 Yes because CoD should win GOTY all the time because it's SUCH an amazing game... *facedesk*
  • @54 None of those people even mentioned CoD... Y'know, it's not good when the only way to get your point across is to pass a slur about a totally unrelated series, based on a personal stereotype that anyone who disagree's with you MUST play that series. OT: Excellent to hear! Though like 48, I wish there had been more meaningful changes, thought the subtle changes were still brilliant. Small things like Clem swearing in episode 2 if you chose to do it in #1 :)
  • I don't care that its "GOTY" 2012, I don't care that people consider it one of the best story lines in gaming history, I don't care about people bitching about its gameplay. The one thing I really care about is the genre. Telltale's The Walking Dead isn't a FPS. It's basically a point and click down in its core. The attention that TWD has recieved so far is phenomenal, considering point and click is a dying genre in a market cluttered with FPS games. I hope this means that developers realize games don't have to be a FPS to be good.
  • I'll admit it was a great game, but the game is filled with stat/game resetting bugs. I havn't played a point and click adventure in over 20 years and The Walking Dead was a pleasant change of pace. When I consider how many times I had to start chapters over due to how buggy this game is, TT better implement some better quality control this time around with Season 2. Also I was thinking about replaying this as an evil SOB bad Lee. For those of you that played like this, I have a question for you: Do things really change that much when you're a prick to everyone? Personally I wanted to kill Kenny but played nice with him throughout the whole game only to see him die in that alley.
  • And they deserve every one of those sales too; excellent game -- infact, it probably makes it into my list of all time favourites. I can only hope this restores the developers' faith in point and click adventures again.
  • I was reserving judgement big time for this and it ended up blowing me away. After its ending I'm once again reserving judgement for Season 2, hope it can live up to expectations.
  • Must of been because of Xbox Lives and Steam's fire sales. I actually liked it a lot. I didn't expect this type of game be good. BRING ON SEASON 2!!!1! (btw, its not on my GT cuz i got it on steam)
  • This is good news. :D
  • SEASON 2! YES!
  • Disappointed for the people in AUS, if you were smart you would have made a US account so you could play this epic game
  • why is any negative comments on this game challenged with accusations of being a cod kid?
  • I picked it up because of the december deal. 1st episode free and 50% off all other episodes, great deal for a so far great game.
