People will be people. It doesn't matter the reason for insane, violent actions that some people take, video games and films will always be a frontrunner for an answer. "Hey, let's shelter and ignore those with social issues, obvious problems, or mental disorders who most certainly need assistance, and then when they lash out and kill innocent people, blame it on, uhh...Grand Theft Auto or something. Yeah!" |

Local gamers should hold a counter protest. It would be called "Grab what you can and run" initiative, and the purpose would be to save as many games as they can before destruction. Trade the games in for cash (after playing them, obviously) and donate the money to an actual cause, and turn this stupidity into something that actually does some good. Screw it, too much effort... *goes back to playing murder sims* |

| There may be ample evidence for correlation of violent media to violence, but there is also ample evidence that parents let their 8-year old kids play gears of war. By letting their kids watch violent rated r movies, play video-games meant for teenagers and adults, they are allowing their households to become a potential breeding ground for violence. Thats Home-Grown terrorism, America. Theres no reason to destroy violent video games. Its up to parents to decide what is right for their own children. |

Sure blame the media, rather than people not taking the responsibility and policing the media when it comes to children. I honestly feel that its because of the current generation of parents, been of the frame of mind that video games are only games, so whats the worst it can be? That said violence for the sake if violence in video games needs to stop IMO. Also they need to make it illegal to own older rating games, and buy them for underage people like, alcohol and cigarettes, I know that kind of thing is difficult to enforce, but it puts it into the parents mind that it is wrong. |

Catch 22 is notable for desensitization of violence through satire. Lord of the Flies is self explanatory to those who read it. What about racism presented in To Kill A Mockingbird? Catcher in the Rye inspired that one dickbag to kill John Lennon! BOOKS ARE VIOLENT TOO, WAKE UP PEOPLE! BURN DEM BOOKS TOO! |

Video games causing violent behavior is just a figment of our society's imagination, similar to how rock & roll was "the Devil's music" in the '50s-'80s. |

| God I fucking hate these people. The people that do shit like go and shoot up a school or a movie theater have a lot deeper problems then playing violent video games. Every time a shooting like this happens the parents get all up in arms about it (no pun intended) and then find a copy of GTA or something and go "Well there's your problem, its not that he had a mental breakdown or severe emotional problems, he played GTA and that's why he killed all those people." And maybe if those parents would stop using video games to babysit their kids we wouldn't have to hear about this kind of stuff. And if they're gonna start doing this to video games they better take a hard look at everything their kids are exposed to cause video games should be the least of their worries. |

errm... yeah... destroy the video games because thats what all the kids were shot with. should be destroying guns, if you allow guns legally in a country things like this will happen whether theres video games, movies, books, music... whatever around the evidence for that is true and proven where evidence that violent media causes it is circumstantial bullshit, there is no correlation between violence in media and actual violence because everybody these days indulges in some form of violent media if it actually made us violent we would all be killing each other |

The problem isn't the games, it's the parents who allow kids to play them without informing them that a game is a game, nothing more nothing less. The acts depicted in them should not be replicated in real life. Simple logic. |

Its not the games. Its not the guns. Its the fact that the mental health system of America was destroyed several decades ago. Instead of getting real help, these nutjobs are put on magic pills and left to do whatever they want. The solution isn't to destroy games, or violate our 2nd amendment rights. We need a mental health registry, we need more realistic mental health facilities and laws, and we need to get the dangerous people off the streets and lessen their ability to harm others. |

@44 - It's unfortunate that people think that. I think it's because weird stuff that happens in America is more widely reported. A consequence for being one of the biggest and most observed countries. :( I don't think it'll be long before this stuff starts happening in England. I live in a rather small, insignificant town that doesn't have a huge crime rate, and somebody was recently arrested for carrying firearm(s) and bullets. The world is a scary place, and it's because of the media, not because of America. |

When will people realise this is not the video game's fault and that it's the actual person's HEALTH issues to begin with. I've grown up playing video games since I was 4 playing "violent" games like GTA, man hunt etc, I'm sane I'm normal, I mean I admit when I was little I didn't quite understand why I was killing said person apart from the game told me to do so. But if you can't quite realise video games are for releasing stress doing whatever you want being free minded in a VIRTUAL game then fucking hell, it's game grow the fuck up, look at both quite big news based shootings last year the school + the cinema one. Both actually HAVE health issues. Could this be because they played video games? Sure it could of added to it but it would always be the person to begin with, with the problem. |

Here's an idea: Throw the fucking guns away instead. Gun related homicides in USA for 2011 (latest figures I could find): Just over 11,000. Gun related homicides in England for 2012: 58 Whoever thinks gun control isn't going to help is delusional. You can play violent video games and watch violent movies in England too, the last time I checked.....and yet 58 people vs 11,000 (possibly more in 2012) (for the record, I am American....so this isn't bias) |

Taking away video games will probable increase violence. Think all of all the kids that are going to see their games go up in flames and seek revenge! A tiny percentage of people that lose grip of reality is not down to violent media, its down to poor parenting that allow their troubled kids to play games all hours of the day, which they no doubt bought for them. Add legal guns, and you get a lot of dead people. |

| Why bother trying to run violent video games out of your town? Wouldn't organising relentless mass protests and petitions to government get the job done sooner in trying to get better, or more appropriate, legislation in place to deal with some of the inadequacies (or non-existance) of public healthcare and weapons control in America? I'm sure Southington is probably a nice place full of nice people who could help make a 'real' difference, like a whole bunch of towns all over the country. But still... the games will burn... *Sigh* |

Not even trying to address the real problems is just going to result in more dead kids down the road. So sad. |

Here we go again. How long has violence been around? my guess would be long before the video game, film & music industries. these days it's not violence that causes most problems, it's religion. the cause of so many problems in the world. Now I'm not on a religion bashing here, Im stating the facts/truth. The Bible as #40 pointed out has been in circulation for thousands of years containing very specific & quite graphic details of violence ( be it theft, murder, rape), but I dont hear anyone say to burn or destroy that. Im a proud gamer, & a very experienced one. 24 years gaming and counting, & no matter how much this debate rolls around the only point I have for it is that it all does come down to the parents of kids who ARE too young. Video games are an aid for parents an easy & lazy way to raise their children, yet when something does go wrong it's not the parents fault. Now I dont play COD anymore ( i did, but after years of the same thing i moved on) but other games with high ratings (in Australia MA15+) i get 12 year olds & under. Again, whats up with that? As a parent myself, with a child who is at the moment too young to play anything, i would never allow my child to play anything out of her age bracket, because I know what is out there, Im very well educated on this. In the end, video games would never be used as an excuse. There's my rant. This topic always pisses me off, I just had to say my piece. Cheers P.s. living in Australia, is this town in Connecticut a religious (hallelujah) town? If so, it would answer a number of questions. |

@ #57. Listen, I also agree this is stupid, but "assault rifle" is so generic that it could be applied to any rifle that is either semi-automatic or fully-automatic. I am not sure what country you are from, but I don't want my country to be telling me what firearms I can and cannot own. I should be able to choose whether to buy a shotgun or a rifle, or a pistol or a revolver for hunting, target practice, or for defense. I say don't blame the guns, don't blame the games, blame Adam Lanza for what he did. Bring back the mental health system like it used to, and keep these people from trying to harm others. |

Its not the Fault of the Developers for making such fun and violent games. Its the Parent's fault for: A. Buying a Rated M for MATURE game for their 8 year old son/daughter. B. NOT Checking the box and seeing that it has a M rating on the FRONT and BACK of the case, with the back telling you what to expect in the game contents. C. Not doing research on the game your kid wants before you buy it. D. Letting your kid play online without watching him/her when it SPECIFICALLY tells you when you load up online multiplayer that "Online interaction is NOT rated by the ESRB. E. You don't talk to your kid about the Distinctive FINE LINE of REALITY and FANTASY. If you don't want violence in America, it's like you're asking for World Peace. I understand there are parents on here that let their kids play whatever game, and that's fine, as long as you, the parent, are mindful of what your kid is saying/doing when playing said game or even outside. I'm sure there are some parents who don't talk to their kids about this fine line, and use the Gaming system and games as a $300 baby sitter because the parents dont want to put up with their kids shit, and thats repulsive. You chose to have a kid (in most cases), so do your part as a parent and quit being a damn pecker. |

@70 im pretty sure hes referring to any gun overall, if you allow somebody to have something thats made to kill people with you cant be surprised when they you know.. kill someone with it sure its he psycho kid that did it but this isnt an isolated incident and every psycho that is to blame individually is just a symptom of a deeper problem, violence will always happen but if the country didnt allow him access to guns so easily then a lot of lives would have been saved |

I wonder how many people joined the military after playing games like Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, but the media doesn't stop to think about aspects of the story like that. |

Hah. Back in the 1700s people blamed the opera for corrupting the people and now today people blame video games. People will always use violent media as a scapegoat. I'm 15 and have been playing violent video games for a long time and have no desire to commit any of these callous crimes. |

| i hate how they quickly blame video games, its not the games fault, before someone even buys a game, it clearly states on the box what is in the game, parents just buy the game and if something happens its there fault, second, retailers are told in several states that they have to be of age to buy an M rated game, if they dont follow that rule then its on the retailer not the game, there was more to this than video games, but games are gonna take the heat for this |

Guns dont kill people, its the twats that pull the triggers, who knows, maybe hitler had a very early copy of GTA somewhere which sent him on his quest for world domination, maybe red alerts time travel story actually hapened and video games were sent back in time to corrupt people. Anyone remember when Slipknot and Marilyn Manson were to blame for everything ? My thoughts are with the people of Connecticut, it was a tragedy, but they should stop being stupid and just admit Adam Lanza was a crazy cunt and there was no rhyme or reason to it. |

Very political dispute, However blaming Music, Media, Games etc is not the right approach. Studies have proven a child/teens enviornment or friends effect him/her more than anything. Guns don't kill people People Kill People! We all have evil thoughts or our moments we're also human. We learn from our mistakes. Music is a way to express how you feel whether its violent or really lyrical that's the way it is. My prayers to the Sandy Hook Elementary school. The lunatic that committed this hideous act was not mentally stable, Yet his mother took him to a shooting rage. Where were the parents at?? |

Sorry for the double post (not that I actually care), but I have been playing video games for eighteen years now - since the age of three - and I have a number of mental 'problems', and I've never felt like going on a massacre. Sure, I get annoyed with games, and I'll most likely take my anger out by punching myself in the leg or whatever, AND I've been PROFOUNDLY influenced by them... but not to kill people in real life. The witch hunt needs to fucking stop. xx |

@70. There is a massive gap, a huge and gaping fucking gap, between "I don't want gun violence" and "I don't want people telling me I can't buy guns". It's an oxymoron. Where there are firearms, there is gun violence. It's not about the government stopping the dissemination of weaponry, it's about the people actually taking responsibility. I'm from the UK and I live in New York. And I was taught how to use weapons back in England. Schooled for years. And I learned not only how to hit a target, I learned respect for the power of the instrument. Americans, hunters or otherwise, have no idea what that actually means because they're so blinded by their second amendment. If a threat came at me while I was holding a gun, I'd hit them with it. Because I understand that to pull the trigger is to take a life, and I don't think any one person has the right to make that decision. People should not own high caliber weapons, period. And they should not own any fucking weapons without an incredible amount of education. Hitting a certain age should not entitle a person to buy a gun just because the Constitution says so. Rights are not the same as responsibilities. |

@95 Except Religions around the world have the blood of billions on there hands. Just a few examples, The Crusades, millions killed in the name of "God" in an attempt to control his supposed "Holy City". Women accused of "witchcraft" and killed because they worshiped "Satan" not "God", but really it was just because they where smart, and people where scared of smart women. WWII, 6 Billion Jews killed by Hitler and the Nazi's, which led into one of the biggest wars ever seen, losing countless more lives. Religion has a lot to answer for, and until they do they have no rights to criticize anyone, or anything else. |

Never had guns, don't need guns.. want to hunt? go fishing...Ever hear of a mass murder with a fishing pole and hook? There are just too many mentally disturbed, uneducated idiots throughout the world that have access to firearms, and The Right To Bare Arms just allows more of our idiots to have them... Humans have had the instinct to take a life ever since the dawn of man, and sins like envy and greed currupted mens souls into taking a mans life. They know its wrong but do it anyways. Take away their means of mass murder, guns, and see how many public place get mass murders with bladed weaponed weilding maniacs... Sure there is knife wielding maniacs out there.. but 1 or 2 murders is better then mass shooting sprees... |

| It's not the games that cause people to do crazy shit, it's the individuals themselves. Normal people do not play Grand Theft Auto and think "I'm going to get me a hooker and steal some cars". Nor do they decide to shoot up a school. There may be some who are influenced by this, but that's their mental health. More money should be put towards identifying these people and control/cure them before it's too late. |

"Rather, SouthingtonSOS is saying is that there is ample evidence that violent video games, along with violent media of all kinds, including TV and movies portraying story after story showing a continuous stream of violence and killing, has contributed to increasing aggressiveness, fear, anxiety and is desensitizing our children to acts of violence including bullying." No there isn't. There are studies that show "possible links", but no proof of a definitive connection between playing a violent game and comitting a violent act. If there was such a case, we'd have 6 million violent people out right now killing people. One nut job for every sale of a Call of Duty game. But we don't have that because violent video games can only trigger violence in those who are already predisposed towards violence. It's also questionable they're giving out gift cirtificates. Mst likely for local stores so the people can give away their old games and feel virtuous, then go out and donate free money to corporations and be good little consumers again, spending money they probably wouldn't otherwise have spent. Turning tragedy into a commercial opportunity. That's such a western thing. |

Oh, for F sake. First, no child should have a game like CoD or other M rated games...because they're M rated. A stupid and lazy parent who buys their 10 year old GTA or CoD should be ashamed of themselves. Who cares if all his other friends are playing it, that just means their parents are just as stupid and lazy. As long as they're going after games, why not target movies, music and the news? A lot of them display and speak about violence. You can't target video games as a whole, no one sees Little Big Planet or Kinect Sports as a gateway to violent behavior. They want to control who can buy M rated games, fine. Kids shouldn't be allowed to buy them anyway, much in the same way as kids shouldn't be allowed in R rated movies. Parents need to be more diligent and make sure their kids aren't playing M rated games or watching/listening to mature movies/music, and if their child has mental health issues, they really need to keep on top of it. Personally, I'm sick of hearing about games, movies and music being the bane of existence and the cause of violence. I've played games since the Atari 2600 and played all genres and I've never committed an act of violence, and neither has any of my other gaming friends. Any study they conduct will most likely be skewed in their favor. I'm sure they'll hand pick which games they want to test, like Postal, instead of testing from all genres. |

Simple truth is that this is a fairly typical response for adults who are out of touch with their kids and modern media to a tragedy they can't explain. No one can explain it really, but when people don't know what to do they look for things to blame. It's human nature. Not saying it will fix anything, but I certainly can understand the rationale behind this program. |

Hooray for this completely moral victory that solves absolutely no problems! Don't worry though, it at least allows the community to FEEL BETTER about itself during the interims between shootings and shoddy parenting. After all, isn't that what it's all about? Feeling better without actually accomplishing something? After all, solving the problem would be HARD. Let's just burn violent media. That's EASY. It also LOOKS LIKE we care if we do it. It's not the RESULTS that matter! IT'S THE INTENT! Next week, this group is going to have a sit-in to stop world hunger! They're going to be burning high fat and high salt content foods behind the local McDonalds. SEE YOU ALL THERE! |

I only heard once that some one asked were are the parents in the columbine shooting. So my point is parents parent your children please. I have been expose to alot of violence in the media and movies and games when I was a kid but my parents told me right from wrong, how to be a good person and so forth. No offence to anybody... but I must say this. Seen from Europe, the USA seems a country populated by dumb people because to us it seems like you always miss the big picture. A guy enter a school, shoot a bunch of people, and what people do? They go to wal-mart and buy even more guns and teach their children how use them. And why they do that? Because they believe the enemy is always OUT there and if it gets closer WE KILL IT, WE SHOOT IT, WE BLOW ITS HEAD FIRST. Only in 2012 there were 4 major shooting all across the USA and everytime people were rushing to buy more weapons... to feel "safe", to be "prepared". When they will learn the lesson? WAKE UP AMERICA! the enemy is not out there! The enemy is NOT a rock group a bad movie, or a violent video game. The enemy is not even Satan or the Terrorists you are terribly afraid of... The enemy is inside the contraddictions of your system, is inside the fabric of your society where people are very unequal among them, where you have been taught since childhood that freedom means having the rights to keep a gun and shoot at your own judgment. You may think that people who do such acts are just plain crazy, but it's not always like that... Simply some people just cannot handle problems, and they react in the way they are taught: kill your enemy or what you see as an enemy. So just to start, You americans, should stop buying gun, you should see "bear arms" as not your right anymore and you should also teach your children how to handle life. No game, movie or book can mine the beliefs of those who have been given a solid non-violent education. |

oh for fucksake, AGIAN, really... my games collection and consoles has probably cost me over £3'000 the past 3 years, would they give me that in gift vouchers? no, of coarse they wouldnt... i live in the UK and while are gun laws are much stricter (no member of public can have pistols, assault rifles ect...) this kind of thing does still happen. the most recent example would be Raul Moat, who it turns out WANTED help from professionals, went to THE POLICE WARNING them wasn't right and was WORRIED that he would endanger lives. what happened? they TURNED HIM AWAY!! bottom line, in most cases like this, the individual is ignored and thrown out of the front door by a fucking idiot who doesn't care because he makes most peoples yearly pay in one month. |

| How about these fucks just ban CoD period? Yet its games such as Max Payne 3, GTA IV, hell, fucking Dead Rising that don't cause this shit, and are twice as violent, lay some fucking bans on CoD, its unplayable, and maybe if these fucking parents could read the "Mature" rating on the game, they could get something through their thick skulls. Most of these kids have never even heard of the games I've listed above, they are gonna "Destroy" games? Guaranteeing you already bought the game with your hard earned money, how stupid will it make you look to waste it all? Over some incident that relates NOTHING to gaming? |

Ok here is an idea. We have all these U.S. troops coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Why don't we send the ones that get discharged to schools as security. Maybe three-four per school/campus. This creates jobs for returning veterans, and it increases security at the schools as there are multiple armed guards who are military trained. |

| Automatic guns available to the public, and unstable people with access to them is why mass murders like this happen and will continue to happen unless laws are changed in the U.S, it has jack shit to do with video games and movies, and parents who house these unstable kids in there homes with automatic rifles and other guns have no one else to blame but themselves when these horrific murders occur. |

| blame parents not video games parents have the responsibility to teach their children to be nice upstanding citizens who are always there when you need them, the people that end up violent are the ones that suffer neglect and punishment and feel like they have no one to go to. so sort out everything else and after the main problem is sorted you will see video games are not to blame |

It's a knee-jerk reaction to a tragedy that no one fully understands. I can understand the mindset, but it's similar to shooting arrows at thunderclouds because lightning burned down your home last year. Children (and people in general) are not math equations; you can't change the videogame violence variable and get the solution you were looking for. There are so many things we don't know about the man who committed this crime, least of which is whether or not he even played violent videogames. I would like to think that we, as a society, have reached the point where we no longer believe the argument that "the devil/tv/Duke Nukem made me do it" is valid. There is no simple solution. We have to educate children on what violence is and peaceful ways of conflict resolution, improve our national mental healthcare state, at least place a basic set of guidelines in terms of firearm regulation, ensure proper enforcement of ESRB ratings, educate parents (yes, parents) on being brave enough to talk to their children to better understand what they're watching and playing instead of being the "cool mom or dad" that lets their kids do stuff they aren't supposed to do. Even if you made all these monumental changes, people are going to still kill senselessly, because some people just turn out that way; as monsters. Life is more random than any of us would like to admit. I'm not scared to send my kid to school, to go to a movie theatre, or to fly on airplanes, or any of it. Because as soon as any person (or a society) lets fear take over, that's when the real inhuman monster surfaces. |

| It may only be me, but I read that article a bit differently than it seems everyone else did. First, it seems to be entirely voluntary for parents, nobody is going door to door collecting games they deem "violent". If I were a parent and my child spent every waking moment thinking about or playing any game, regardless of content, I might consider trading it just to keep an obsession from becoming unhealthy. This goes double if I can get some worthwhile credit for it. I've known those 8-year-olds who only talk about Call of Duty. And I had friends fail out of college because of WoW. It looks to me like they are encouraging parents to take a closer look at the games their kids are playing, and to make the decision on whether their kids are mature enough not just to handle content, but to handle gaming in general. |

Maybe I missed something, but at what point was this proven to be the work of a religious group? A lot of people seem to be very quick to blame the religious and the 'God squad' for this. It's also worth noting that they have some noble and sensible goals, especially trying to encourage discussion between parents and children. Regardless of the school shooting, it has always been imperative for Parents to become more aware and better educated about what their children watch, read, listen to and play. This isn't just a games issue. The problem is that it's not a violent media issue. Violent media is regulated so only the people of the right level of maturity (represented in this case by reaching a certain age) can access the content, however this can be circumvented by ignorant parents or other 'responsible' adults who allow their children this content without care. I don't personally believe that a 14 year old playing GTA is going to go out and shoot hookers or somesuch, but I DO believe that parents should be educated regarding the content they let their children experience. If after learning this, they still decide to let their children experience that media, then so be it, for better or worse it is an informed decision. The trouble is ignorance. That is far more problematic than being able to shooting a computer generated image of a Russian or middle eastern man. This group have a good and noble purpose, but what they're dealing with it in a bad way. This is little more than a mob mentality or a panicked reaction that is scapegoating media rather than actually facing up to the bigger problems, ignorant and uneducated parents and adults. |

here's the way i see it,, violent video games, movies, music, cartoons, comics,, etc.. exist because PEOPLE are violent. violent video games, movies, music, cartoons, comics,, etc.. provide an outlet that probably saves more lives than they destroy. now a kid who gets exposed to these things way too early thanks to piss poor parents who let the tv basically raise the kid,, can easily grow up a bit twisted. that's just the truth. mature ratings on these forms of media are only useful if the parents heed them. all these violent video games this group is planning to throw in the bin,, who bought them in the first place? couldn't have been minors, since hopefully the local game shop IDs when these games are brought up to the till. supposedly this stunt is to encourge conversation between the parents and kids. great, fantastic,, but it's a violent means to an end which will continue to elude. and we all know how well prohibition works |

If someone goes on a killing spree there's something wrong with them mentally. It has absolutely nothing to do with violent games, if it did, there would be alot more shootings. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they did a study and violent games actually help with anger as it helps people get it all out of their system. And what's going to happen after they've take them all away and there's more shootings? What are they going to blame then? "Everyone who has been a part of the recent shootings liked to drink chocolate milk, therefore, chocolate milk must be the cause!" |

Im no parent, but i am an uncle. My sister lets her kids come to my apartment and play video games without worry of what Im allowing them to play. She knows I sit down and talk to them about the game they are wanting to play before playing it. For example, I let my oldest niece, who was nine at the time, play Fallout New Vegas. Before i allowed her to play I talked with her about why she shouldnt do the violent action she'll do in the game, in real life. I exsplained how such a world could come about, it even involved a brief history lesson. I also exsplained what good she could learn. I told about helping people, learning how to survive, and how to judge right from wrong when the situation maybe fuzzy on right and wrong. I let her ask questions as well so that i knew she was at the least pretending to pay attention. Granted she was only nine at the time, ten now, and I know she didn't understand everything, but I wasn't going to set her lose and let think it was alright to do those things in real life. I tried to do be responsible about it. |

Ignore the fact the shooter at Sandy Hook had mental issues...ignore the fact the shooter has access and maybe even motive for the shooting...ignore the fact his mother (this is my opinion) didn't seem to really care for the shooter completely. Let's blame everything else in the world, because those guns got up on their own and took all those lives. Though I do agree younger children should not being playing CoD, BF, Halo...etc. That is something that the PARENT is responsible for, and it disgusted me to no end that the parents are never blamed first... |

You want to stop these dam crimes from happening, well, here's an idea to cut them back: 1: Stop the sale of fire arm's to private citizens. Having such an easy access for guns is one of the reasons the US has shootings on such high rates compared to other country's. 2: Strengthen the mental health care bill. From what I understand, something about that was fucked up some time back, a friend of mine wanted to get some counselling at her uni in the us, there was a 7 month waiting list... for counselling... In the UK, you can get something for that sorted in minuets :/ not when the problem will either be over (for better or more likely worse) or it'll be to late to try to act on. 3: Get parents to teach their kids god dam common sense. I've had an argument with a mother buying her child GTA IV in a store, well, not so much an argument, but more of a heated discussion, she asked me if it was any good, i answered depends on the person, she pointed to her son, i ask how old, she says 8. 'You're going to buy you're 8 year old child a game that's made to be appropriate for adults only?' my exact words, her's 'yeh, it's only a game, why wouldn't I?' I said my views, she put the game back and walked off with the kid. He's to young to understand the game, at least until he's been taught by his parent what the difference of things are, but even then, the game it's self is to mature for his age. At least the women had the common sense not to buy it then, but there are to many parent's who will just buy it under that notion :/ Why is it that common sense is something that's so lacking for humans? :/ |

I work at Gamestop, I see plenty of parents DAILY enabling this happening. If it's apparently an issue, there is a simple stop to it. I live in Connecticut and although I feel for everyone involved in this tragedy, I don't think this is a good way to solve the problem. Violence has been around forever and will continue to be. I grew up playing games (some of them violent) on the Super Nintendo and have been a gamer since. I've never once thought about committing a crime. So I don't think video games are to blame here. They should focus more on improving mental healthcare and perhaps even stricter gun laws. And maybe parents need to start teaching their kids about this kind of stuff. My parents at least taught me right from wrong and how to make the good decisions in life. And they are not getting any games from me |

| Couldn't possibly be anything to do with gun laws and extremely bad parenting. There are so many parents these days that just don't give a fuck. The only reason they have kids is for money, putting no effort into parenting, when shit goes down lets blame the videogames because we can't be bothered to take responsability for our own mistakes. |

Well, there may be some truth to it, although it seems that they are throwing the baby out with the bath water. I suppose if nobody has violent images played in their mind, then the propensity to commit violent actions is kerbed slightly, & the graphic methods they use will to carry these out will not be presented to them through media formats. It will be an interesting social test, although I feel that the very fact that such an atrocity has occurred on their doorstep will act as a bigger deterent than any media ban. My thoughts go to the suffering families of those poor children:( |

It makes me feel sick to the core for these poor souls... & I live in another continent... I really can't condone any negative comments towards the citizens of Newtown if they want to try and do something to move on... don't forget that this is a true tragedy... far worse than anything as inconsequential as a handful of computer GAMES being banned or buried! Get some perspective people, rather than looking at the world through your own selfish lenses. |

Violent video games cause aggression in youth in USA and Japan: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18977956 Yet, gun-related deaths are much lower in Japan when compared to USA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate So, although violent games cause aggression world-wide, why are more people dying to gun violence in America? Clearly games are but a small factor and should just be better regulated in the hands of minors. But I'm not seeing a direct correlation between games and gun deaths. |

@232 I agree with you, it is heart breaking that all those kids lost their lives. But to say that video games had anything to do with it is completely and utterly ignorant and stupid. The guy was a piece of shit scum bag, plain and simple. Unfortunately there are lots of those monsters in the world, and there always has been, long before video games ever existed. If it makes the people that were affected by this tragic event feel better, then by all means they can go ahead and burn whatever they want. However, burning video games is not going to fix the problem and is not going to prevent something like this happening again. These people should stop wasting their time destroying things that make a lot of people happy, and should start putting their time and energy into coming up with ways to actually prevent this sort of horrible tragedy from happening in the future. |

This is what i believe: 1) Violent Media/Games are not the main reason for school schooting but they can be an inspiration how to kill somebody or how to make a kill-plan. 2) Sure the parents have much responsibility for their kids, but it`s not alone the parents fault, there are much more things than that. Connecticut shouldn`t scape goat violent media and WE shouldn`t scape goat the parentes alone, because the reason behind all of this goes much deeper than some people think. 3) Even if you are the best father and mother, you have not full control of the life of your child. Maybe you have controll of your kid when it`s home but what if your child goes to school? What if other students are bullying your child every day and you don`t recognize this as a father or mother, because your child doesn`t want to speak about that? Don`t forget that the actors of school shooting are in most cases victims too. I mean honestly ,if other students are bullying you every day, insulting you hurting you every day, you won`t be able to take this any longer, you will look for solutions. You could surely talk with your parents, change school, talk with the parents of the students who hurt you, but some people get hurt that much, they just can`t find a way but to suicide or seeking for revenge in form of killing. I am from germany and we also have kids who are playing violent games at the age of 9. Go and play Cod Black Ops 2 right now and you will see a bunch of german kids screaming like piggs in the game-chat, so stop calling american parents as dumb. We have the same problem too. Oh btw: In the german game news you can also see that there is a group of people like Connecticut who want to destroy violent games, so this action is not only in america. But the reactions of the german gamers are the same like from the americans. ;) |

Just wanted to say this real quick too: If you are not allowed to play games, you will get bored and this could make you go outside and make some trouble/crime. I strongly believe that boredom can cause much troubles than playing violent games, because you are entertained you have something to do. I see a lot of young people in the street. They have nothing to do ,so they are start with drinking and smoking, insulting people on the streets when its nights ,just because they are bored. This can make much more trouble than playing games IMO. |

^^ in Germany we have that for over 25 years. When i grew up playing Amiga and stuff they already banned violence (think about Doom). Still we dont have stuff like this happening here on a yearly basis (yes i know there was one incident here as well years ago - but that just 1). Everyone has to understand games or violent movies dont shoot people. People with guns shot other people so the more logical reason would be to ban guns. But America oh well..... |

I used to work in Gamestation (RIP) and I was always really strict about who I sold to. I always informed parents and grandparents about the content and if I felt they were been ignorent to what I was informing them about, I simply wouldn't sell them the game. @ RDrules, and a few other people advocating gun control. Get out of here with your "statistics". Banning any type of gun is 100% no different than banning any form of media. By saying we should start banning firearms you are the exact same type of person who started this movement in connecticut To destroy media. The government should not be able to tell me what i can and cannot purchase to protect my wife or myself. For the record, I grew up on a farm around guns. Ive shot guns my whole life, coincidentally ive also played "violent" video games for just as long. By your logic, doesnt this mean I should have went on a mass killing spree? How weird to you must it be that I havent. I own guns and shoot them to this day. I carry one almost everywhere I go to ensure some wackjob like Adam Lanza does not shoot my friends, or my wife, or anyone else wherever I go. Why do I do this? Because it is my Second Amendment right to do so. And my responsibilty as a Husband and friend to protect those I care about, it is my responsibility as a Human being in general to care about and protect others. |

"When the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliament was advised by an artful man, who was governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them; but that they should not do it openly, but weaken them, and let them sink gradually...I ask, who are the militia? They consist of now of the whole people, except a few public officers. But I cannot say who will be the militia of the future day. If that paper on the table gets no alteration, the militia of the future day may not consist of all classes, high and low, and rich and poor..." - George Mason, Virginia Constitution Convention "To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them." – Richard Henry Lee 1788 "When they took the 4th Amendment, I was quiet because I didn't deal drugs. When they took the 6th Amendment, I was quiet because I am innocent. When they took the 2nd Amendment, I was quiet because I don't own a gun. Now they have taken the 1st Amendment, and I can only be quiet." – Lyle Myhr Gun control isnt about guns, its about control. Censoring violent media isnt about the violent media its about the inability to acknolwedge that mental health is a serious issue. More people are killed in America each year by baseball bats than by guns. Do we ban baseball bats as well? |

@#248 - Croc 494 Make guns illegal and shootings will stop happening? How funny is it, that shootings are already illegal and they still happen? How funny is it that guns are not allowed(illegal) in schools, yet this is where the majority of shootings happen? Do you really think a criminal intent on killing someone will give a shit about whether or not guns are illegal? You are no different than these fools in Connecticut if you think banning guns will magically solve all problems. Guns are not the problem, violent games are not the problem. People, parenting, and mental health are the problem. |

If I was stateside I'd try to return games like Monsters Vs Aliens, and other really bad games like Prince Caspian. If they want games that incite violence surely these frustrating poor quality games are more likely to incite anger than a game that is of a good quality. But as usual and like most here suggest it is a knee jerk reaction to a problem that needs to be sorted rather than scape-goated. |

@ZingZitang i totally agree in some parts. I know its impossible to ban guns in your country because its the historical background. Same as you're trying to ban beer in Germany. On the other hand the U.S. had a murder rate of 4.2 while just over the border Canada has a murder rate of 1.6. So tell me why? By your logic this would mean U.S. citiziens are more mental disturbed then Canadians? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate now go and compare your murder rate to the ones western europe. |

@257 you miss all points entirely.. taking away firearms wont STOP violent crime that itself is impossible and if a solution existed for it im sure every country and person on the planet would love to hear it but if you allow people to have access to a tool that was invented with the sole reason to kill then when they do commit violent crimes you are allowing and been aiding them to commit them on a scale much worse than if they dont have access to them in just this case he would most likely have always committed the act itself but if he didnt have access ad training to a firearm then most if not all the lives lost because he would have had a knife or some other weapon instead of a gun. Also a document written hundreds of years ago isnt a defence for it, im not going to go into that too deeply but its a historical document written in a different time |

@ 257 as #269 said the problem lies in the easy access to guns, if it is impossible for people to get a gun there won't be any gun to take to school. I understand it's impossible to ban guns now but the selling of weapons really should be a lot stricter. Maybe you know how to shoot a gun and "respect" it, but I think the vast majority doesn't. It's not just bad parenting, bullies or mental illness that causes these horrible events, I always believed it's all of these things combined that can corrupt the weaker minds among us. This problem occurs everywhere else in the world, but those people usually don’t have the access to a weapon. The problem with the US is in my eyes that these people do have access to guns, whether they buy them themselves or take them from family. I can't believe there are so many people in the US who can't see this because they are to blinded by their "rights". Don’t tell me you also believe: the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun? |

@200 You are wrong on the Gun standpoint. It's not the registered, LEGALLY OWNING people that go on wild rampages, it's the lawless, the crazy, the ones who can NEVER LEGALLY own a weapon of ANY KIND. Ever hear of Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini? They "legally" took guns away from their citizens, then committed some of the worst possible crimes against those same citizens. On the same line of thinking as "Take Away All Guns", why don't we take fertalizer, racing fuel and panel vans off the market... Those are what Timothy McVey used on Oklahoma City, and were used in the FIRST WTC attack, which failed. |

@ 271 The purpose of a weapon is to kill, all other items you mentioned have a different purpose. Please stop these idiotic comparisons. and let's not make this a historical debate, because there are a lot of civilized countries out there where guns are illegal and I don't see the government of those countries commiting crimes against their people. |

#220 Hehehe. I am not smoking so what I tried said it is should leave violent games alone as they not harm it. Parents and mental people's their faults. Also some games should have some sex like maybe you play as male and female character with full nude and run around shooting stuffs to cover and climb to things and swimming with nude. This is something will be fun and new thing to do in game for adult games only. You know we alway have violent games, casual, hardcore games etc... so why not have some sex then? Hehehe |

@272: It's called Get An Education. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Yes, guns are meant to kill, but there is a serious distinction in who uses them. The person in question here STOLE those weapons from his family, used them to kill his own mother, THEN went on to commit this atrocity. 99.999999% of registered gun owners use them either for hunting or home defense. My family owns several, in multiple households, the prime one being a COP. I'd think I know a thing or two about firearms safety. |

The nasty American bashing comments need to stop. There is no excuse to be talking like that on a friggin video game achievement website. Insulting an entire countries' population based on shit you read in the news is stupid and ignorant. People making comments in this manner should not be allowed to exist on this site. People who actually believe these problems are only in America and spout off hate filled comments like 'American cunts' need to grow the hell up and get a proper education. There needs to be a zero tolerance policy for that kind of shit behavior. |

As a U.S. gun-owning person with kids, I play videogames a lot. But assault rifles that are designed for nothing more than murder do not belong. I am sorry, but these kids were 6 or 7 years old, and I can tell you that I shed many tears after hearing what happened. did you know this: The gunman burst into one room of special education students (who were handicapped) and killed all 14 of the kids and the teacher? Did you also know that while this was happening, the teacher next door hid all of her kids in the cabinets and told them not to move or breathe a word. The gunman burst into the room and said: "Where are all of the kids." The teacher answered (and lied): "We filed them all to the auditorium." Some of the kids heard this and ran out of the cabinets screaming. The teacher tried to shield them with her own body. Six kids and the teacher died. She saved over 15 kids. Don't tell me that this is not an assault rifle issue. Assault rifles need to be illegal. He killed six kids and a teacher faster than you can say: "Please don't kill me." .............. |

@281 You are the one conparing racing fuel and other "normal" items with guns. which doesn't make any sense. If you bring in hitler for example this becomes a different discussion entirely and I don't see what it has to do with the prpblem of gun control in the US. I never said that the murderer had a legal permit for the gun, but he stole it from his parents who have. So the problem is atill easy access. As I've said before these lunatics can get gunsso easily because they can borrow/steal it from their family. I don't understand why you feel the need to state yoyr gun situation. I never said you didn't understand how to handle guns. I merely said that I think most people don't have that control and still own a weapon. The problem I have with the situation is that i simply can't understand why some people won't even admit that guns form a PART of the problem. |

@ 283: Surely you understand that any weapon in a small classroom like that would have been just as deadly. Even a knife. Surely you understand that any civilian model(read:semi automatic)is little more than a glorified handgun. This whole "assault rifle" media frenzy is a scare tactic desidned expressly to scare people into thinking they want gun control. Making any weapon illegal will not solve any problems. After all, when did Columbine happen? Right in the middle of the previous "assault weapon" ban. And furthermore, making any weapon illegal will not stop violence. Two years ago a man in China Stabbed 22 kindergartners(same age as newtown kids). Yes, he stabbed them. With a knife. Because in China(under a totalitarian, communist regime) people arent allowed to have guns. And the whole argument "assault rifles are created solely to murder" is completely ridiculous. In America, More people are killed each year with hammers than "assault rifles". More people are killed each year by baseball bats than all guns. These are facts straight from the FBI. Like I said, this whole "assualt weapon" frenzy is a scare tactic. "A sword never kills anybody; it is a tool in the killer's hand." – Lucius Annaeus Seneca, c. 4BC - 65AD @269: A 230 year old document most definately defends an American citizens rights to own firearms. Do you know the sole purpose the 2nd Amendment was ever even concieved? Because 230 years ago Right before the Revolutionary War, Great Britain attemped to take guns away from Colonials in order to try and prevent the Revolutionary War. This is the sole purpose the 2nd Amendment exists. Because unarmed Citizens are easy to control, and will not be able to defend themselves. This is historical fact. Hitler, Stalin, Mousolini, Mao. Even as recent as recently as this very day with Al Assad in Syra. And as far back as the 14th century. "The people of the various provinces are strictly forbidden to have in their possession any swords, bows, spears, firearms or other types of arms. The possession of these elements makes difficult the collection of taxes and dues, and tends to permit uprising." – Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Japanese Shogun, August 29, 1558 All of these people took guns away from their citizens, expressly so the citizens could not defend themselves. The 2nd Amendment of a 230 year old document is designed expressly to prevent this from happening. And to keep our extremely corrupt and innefective government in check. There are solutions to these problems, gun control is not one of them. Banning guns is the exact same sort of thing these fools are doing with violent videogames. Gun Control isn't about guns, its about Control. |

@287, its a document that was written in a time when the country was coming out of a state of turmoil and weapons were not anything like they are today, it has no baring on the realities of modern life. The world is a completely different place then and there is just no place or need for it in a modern society, I know fine well the history of it but that history while important to remember doesnt mean anything now. The whole thing was also based upon an English law from our own bill of rights... which is still in force and contains the same right to bare arms... just we dont see that as a reason for it to mean everyone can have guns, theyre regulated and controlled by Parliament now because the world has changed |

It's funny to read some of the smug comments from Europeans who dismiss all Americans as a bunch of gun-toting, violent hicks. Since we're generalizing here, allow me. These are the same people who go to a soccer game, get completely inebriated, and in large numbers, decide to assault another group of fans because they're cheering for the other team. The same fans who start chants and scream racial epitaphs at players if they're not white. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." |

If you make guns illegal, only criminals will have them. Ever notice that it's always a REGULAR CITIZEN WITH A GUN who puts down the crazed gunmen? It's not hard to get a gun if you don't care about doing it illegally. Look at all the crime syndacates that do it regularly. Look at all the gangs who have them. All gun laws ever do is take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens, as if they were the ones who were causing the problems. Shouldn't we be more concerned with getting guns out of the hands of CRIMINALS? Making a crime illegal doesn't make it go away. It just makes it illegal. Or... am I the only person on the planet that remembers what happened during the Prohabition Era, when all forms of alcohol were made illegal? Illicit drugs are illegal, doesn't seem to stop people from getting their hands on them. Getting rid of guns only gets rid of them for people who want to obey the law. For those who are screwed in the head... Well, it's not even a minor annoyance. Though, it does make it a LOT easier to shoot unarmed people. |

What they need to do is take better care of the people that are mentally ill. I heard that this guy played Starcraft and Warcraft. Neither of which are violent. They are strategy based. He stayed inside and played video games all day. He was mentally ill because he had little human interaction, and he shut himself in. They have the COMPLETELY wrong idea here. |

@306 If you enforce the law well enough it actually does lower the problem considerably no one can be naive enough to believe that you can lower any crime rate to 0 someone with will enough will always find a way around them but people should always be striving to make it as hard as possible for the criminals and all evidence from cases around the world points towards the fact that controlling guns lowers gun crime. in the UK an incident just like this happened in 1996, 16 children and a teacher were shot to death in Dunblane, that is what forced us to bring in the strict legislation we have now on it - handguns and automatic weapons were banned completely as heres no real reason for a normal member of the public to own one at all and the weapons not banned were subject to masses of checks, paper work and a need for references in order for you to own one (yes guns are not completely illegal in the UK either but ill get to that) and that has lead to a massive drop in gun related crimes as it has made it very difficult to get hold of them, mass shootings are almost none existent of course its not 0 because that simply isnt possible but the interesting part with the mass shootings that have happened over recent years is that most if not all have still been by people that either own them legally or have gotten them from someone that owned them legally. Another example since i dont want it too just seem like UK Vs US as thats not my intention at all Australia around the same time in Port Arthur 35 people were shot dead in the biggest mass killing they had ever seen, they again banned all auto and semi auto weapons along with shotguns. 700 000 weapons were refunded and destroyed in the few years that followed and again it resulted in an almost immediate drop in gun related killings by 59% and there hasent been a mass shooting in the country since and Australia's political climate isnt that dissimilar to the us, the fact is it does work, it has been proven time and time again if you take guns out of the hands of the people gun crime falls. finally ill leave you with quotes from a legislator at the time of the British policy change and from the Australian PM that implemented theirs (mainly because the other guys ancient wartime quotes annoy me so want to use some good modern ones) "To use a gun is not a right, To take proper steps to avoid the disastrous misuse of guns is a duty of government and of every sensible citizen." - Alex Carlisle "The Second Amendment, crafted in the immediate post-revolutionary years, is more than 200 years old and was designed to protect the right of local communities to raise and maintain militia for use against external threats (including the newly formed national government!). It bears no relationship at all to the circumstances of everyday life in America today. Yet there is a near religious fervour about protecting the right of Americans to have their guns — and plenty of them." - John Howard |

@313 The gunman at the mall in Oregon killed himself when cornered... by a civilian citizen with a concealed carry permit. Of course, the news media didn't report about THAT fact. The citizen with the carry permit chose not to take a shot due to the possibility of hitting innocents if he missed. The gunman killed himself long before cops showed up, and the unarmed mall "security" was less than useful. Personally, I think that all citizens without criminal records and mental disabilities should be required to be trained with firearm use and be armed at all times in public. Crime rates would plummet when the criminals know everyone is else is armed. Most of these mass murders have been happening in "no gun zones" where the criminals know they will meet very little resistance from law-abiding citizens. Of course, criminals by definition will not be following the law. I know I sure as hell will not be a sitting duck for these psychopaths. If you gun grabbing fascists want my guns, just come and take them- I dare you. And I'm shocked by all you hypocrites who are so anti-gun, with tons of FPS games on your gamercards. Your attitudes show just how uneducated you are about firearms. |

@314 The guy said crazed gunmen were "ALWAYS" stopped by gun toting civilians, that is not true. Mentioning one case of a gunmen being stopped by a civilian does not mean that's the answer, especially when people still died in that shooting. The Aurora, Colorado theatre shooter was taken into custody by the cops. The Sandy Hook Elemantary shooter killed himself. The gunmen who shot Congresswoman Giffords, etc... There's many instances where the crazed gunmen wasn't stopped by a civilain with a gun. Also, you might want to look at the last time Australia had a mass shooting in the 1990's and the laws they've passed on guns since then and the fact they've had zero mass shootings since like #303 points. Also, I'm not anti-gun, I support the second amendment and am a gun owner, but I also realize that amendment was wrote in the 1700's when you could fire 1 shot a minute if you were really good at reloading... with a musket. Banning guns is NOT the answer, nor is arming everyone. This is a huge problem that will not be solved by doing one thing. Mental health issues need to be addressed, how easy accessible fire arms needs to be addressed. A person on the terrorist watch list can legally buy a gun in the USA, that to me seems ridiculous. There's so many things that need to be done but thinking a one pronged attack solves everythings isn't realistic. I'm not trying to sit here and say I know the answer, no one does, but arming everyone won't actually work out like you think, you can't predict human behaviour. |
|

Forum Posts: 138 | Comment #317 by smacd Sunday, January 06, 2013 @ 02:36:39 AM | |
@313 I realized you didn't say it never is solved by an armed civilian, but the fact is that it does happen, and far more of these cases would be as well if they weren't happening in places where law-abiding citizens were arbitrarily disarmed by the government. Most of my post wasn't directed at you, btw. One thing you may want to look at, is just how many potential crimes are stopped in America just by the fact that the potential victim or someone else nearby was armed and just displayed the weapon. Granted, these are virtually never news stories, and many more incidents are never reported. I agree, you can't predict human behavior. But what you can predict is that a law abiding citizen will disarm when the law tells them to, and a criminal will not if they have the intent to commit a crime. "Gun Free zones", like most schools, are places where people with criminal intent KNOW they have a group that simply cannot effectively fight back. I posted some time ago, and do believe that it has nothing to do with the games or guns at all, it is solely an issue that the mental health system is a mess in the United States. We've made up so many mental disorders, and put them on magic pills and leave them to do whatever. Because its the politically correct thing to do. Just because a person has a mental disorder doesn't make them dangerous, BUT it is very difficult to do anything about the people with disorders that are dangerous, before they do something. It really just torques me that every time something like this happens, the totalitarians immediately jump toward finding scapegoats and trying to limit our rights, rather than addressing the real problem. |

I agree that those people destroying the games are misled, but can people stop blaming the Bible? I am a Christian and a gamer that plays violent video games. I love Gears, Halo, Black Ops II... I haven't done anything that could be construed as violent and aggressive. Anyways, my point is, you people should not retaliate by saying Bibles should be burned/destroyed. By doing so, you are falling to the same level as those people who blame games. I don't care about thumbs up or down. Do your worst or agree with me. |

| Here is what I'm what I'm actually reading when I see and hear people doing crazy stuff like this. Increased video game sales for the company's that make the games. I mean, let's say you purchase a $60.00 game, then go out and burn it for a gift certificate for a Redbox rental or whatever the gift certificate is for. The beneficiary is the video game game, and the company for which the gift certificate was bought from. It's a win win... Now the people that organize this make me want to go and play some Bad Company 2 right now and shoot the shit out of some peeps. Maybe run some goons over with my M1 Abrams, or gut someone with my knife. All in all, a good day! |

@314 im not anti gun at all, i just think that they are a dangerous object to just allow people to have with very little forethought whatsoever, im also not for banning them altogether, in the hands of a trained professional such as a soldier they are needed. I wouldnt even have a problem without police carrying them if they were trained well enough in their use. I just think that what people can get their hands on in the Us needs a serious look at without the government even thinking about the second amendment, stringent checks are needed, not just on mental well being and criminal history but also on what they need it for in the first place, who else might have access too them, how they will be stored and kept etc. This case is a great example of why they need such measures in place the man here had a serious mental health issue and wasent allowed a gun of his own but why was his mother when he would be easily able to access it, why was he even allowed to use it in public at shooting ranges without someone removing it from them, why was she allowed something so powerful in the first place. you cant ban them completely because there are people that use them for very good reasons even in the UK where restrictions are really tight people are allowed to own and use guns they are just subject to checks that attempt to ensure that they are safe to use them and have a good reason to do so. |

| There's a rating system for a reason people. Stop blaming video games for the reason of school shootings! Blame the parents who allow kids to play M-Rated games. When are parents going to realize that video games aren't just a kid market anymore? You wouldn't let your kid see an R-Rated movie right? So why would you let your kid play a M-Rated game if they can't take the violence seriously? IF YOU SHOOT SOMEONE IN REAL LIFE, IT'S GOING TO HURT! |

president obama told these retards what the problem is, it is not video games as video games are sold all over the world, it is only the US that has this problem as they make firearms legal to own the retards! we dont have this level of gun crime as we dont allow guns! the americans need to look at themselves not at the world as a scapegoat as usual |

in the uk people are only alowed single shot rifles and shotguns for hunting, so if we wanted to do a massacre we would need a long time to pull it off i dont see why americans need to be allowed to fire assault rifles with 10 bullets a second while the UK only need to be allowed a single shot as you can only kill one animal at a time anyway. no point anyone else discussing it as its jsut the americans with the problem, and it is only them that need to sort it out. |

314 - "Personally, I think that all citizens without criminal records and mental disabilities should be required to be trained with firearm use and be armed at all times in public" right, i've read this over several times, and this has to be a joke. there is no way, on earth, you can be serious right? |

| After doing a web search I have discovered that the enemy of the gamer ex-lawyer Jack Thompson is behind this modern day rendition of a book burning. Even after becoming the laughing stock of the Justice Department, he is still causing trouble for the average gamer by basically forming a lynch mob and coming to false conclusions about the role video games play in the violence of the world. |

"Rather, SouthingtonSOS is saying is that there is ample evidence that violent video games, along with violent media of all kinds, including TV and movies portraying story after story showing a continuous stream of violence and killing, has contributed to increasing aggressiveness, fear, anxiety and is desensitizing our children to acts of violence including bullying." Couple of things here: 1) More interest in the 'cause' of bullying than the effects of it on the victim. This attitude to bullying is even more harmful to the victim as the focus is on the bully. 2) 'Ample evidence'... yeah. It's funny how most research tends to support the view points of whoever funds it. Cigarette companies, for instance, still produce research which shows evidence of there being no link between smoking and lung cancer. They used to even sport 'evidence' which claimed it helped promote a healthy regulatory system. Horror comics were once 'proven' to harm the innocent and the less said about the illegal (yes, illegal) persecution of horror films in the UK (the so-called 'Video Nasties') by the religious, 'moral' the better. 3) If there is, indeed, a connection between violent media and violent actions then there is one simple solution. Don’t burn things (which could be seen as an act of violence itself - you hate something…. BURN IT!), just stick on a few, wholesome Disney movies because if violent media causes the problem then surely some Enchanted and Toy Story will fix things. Isn’t that how it works? Sorry for the long post. I’ve spent years doing academic work on such topics and it really gets me angry that we’re still ‘burning witches’ rather than dealing with problems. |

| This really gets to me, its not games that make people like they are, these people would go out and do random acts even without playing GTA4. Christ I have been playing violent video games for years, and watching violent movies way before that, but I dont feel the need to go out and kill a load of people. I suffer from bipolar disorder as well and still when at my most depressed stage I dont try and hurt people, its sad that this group are going out burning and destroying creative works, didnt the nazi's do something similar. |
