Will the Next Xbox Be Able To Control Your Entire House? - Microsoft Acquires Household Control Tech
Written Thursday, January 03, 2013 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

In what could be something of a big old coup for the next-generation Xbox, Microsoft has acquired home entertainment technology company id8 Group R2 Studios, despite rival bids for the firm from Apple and Google. That's according to The Wall Street Journal (via The Verge), who report the move will "beef up" the Xbox division.

The acquisition brings with it a host of patents, most notable of which are devices and software that ties together various household technology, potentially enabling users to control gadgets around the house. Popping the kettle on while playing Halo could at last become a reality! Maybe...

It's entirely possible that Microsoft could be planning some sort of control interface using Xbox SmartGlass for instance, with Kinect 2 probably slotting somewhere into the equation too. Other patents for the next-gen Xbox also includes something that can theoretically project interactive images all over your playing space. Hmm... we still prefer the ability to turn on the kettle with our controller. Make it happen, Microsoft!

Why the fuck do we have legs any more? We may as well sell them to fund the new technology coming out...

I'm surely not alone in thinking that with all these steps forwards in technology, we're actually taking steps back in terms of our humanity?

We evolved as a species, learned to survive, and we can now do some amazing things. Why are we suddenly throwing that all out of the window, to allow everything to be done for us? Laziness was not the ultimate goal of evolution, surely?

I'm still of the opinion that the new Xbox should be called "Infinity". With Windows and Windows Phone up to 8 and the symbol for Infinity looks like an 8 laying down it would look right. Plus they could say its because the new Xbox has infinite possibilities, or some lame line like that.

Umm they want people to buy it? More features mean more application and appeal to different target groups?

Like the entire forum does not want extra features?

I am really confused this is pretty much invetiable and people have been talking about this for ages. I am pretty damn excited fore more applicaion.

Especailly with my 50+ games backlogged for 360 I feel like features like this will be the selling point for me.

I like how some are acting like this is some huge distraction from games. It's just some software/protocols made by non-game divisions, chill out. They'd be spending money to bring this to W8 and phones anyways. You're still getting Alan Wake and Halo and Forza and Fable on your 720.

this will be expensive! i strongly believe that ms has lost all touch with its user base. i'm so turned off by ms, that i recently let my xbl expire. i also bought the 3dsxl handheld gaming device. which, imo, rivals the consoles. it has great graphics, sound, feels great & is b/c. with ds & dsi games. i can finalky play myst too. no adds shoved down my throat. no sub fees extra. i think handhelds will replace consoles. consolas are going in the wrong direction now. ps3 failed, now the 360 & kinect are failing. the 360 is nothing but a multi media hub. i recently told xbl rep how i felt about things. i've been a member for 10 yrs. now my sub is up for ny 11th year. which i wont be doing. the changes going on now. the possible future of the next gen. doesnt attract me. i just wanba play gamss & have fun! i strongly recommend the 3dsxl. it has rpgs, family, pinball, plateform, puzzle. not gay titles either. games like myst, spirit camera, soul devil, resident evil, pinball:hof, zelda, even stuff you cant find on consoles! myst, sherlock holmes:case of mummy, extra. priced half as cheap on system & games too! so i find myself now drawn to the handhelds. play them more than my ps3'360 & wii combined. handhelds is where its at now imo. :)

HANG ON A SEC. The company they acquired also do interactive image projection?
That fits perfectly into the rumors that have been circulating for the last few months. Incase people don't know the rumor is the full xbox system is the console + 2 mini kinect units + the much rumored AR goggles/glasses + projector all combining to create a holodeck in the living room. Microsoft owning this company pretty much confirms the rumors.
They will probably also use the tech for the projector phone they demo every few months.

Unless you monitor your lights very strictly, I think this could be a great way to save me. I hate when people leave a TV and lights on in a room then go out for 5 hours. I can see a kinect monitoring if anybody is in the room. After 20 minutes of nobody, turning off everything in that room. $$$

Well...about 95% of you sound absolutely miserable. Did any of you even stop to realize that no claims were even made? This was merely a speculation and the majority of you start hastily questioning humanity. And if this does end up being something with a ridiculous pricetag for all its features...allow me to remind you that you don't have to buy it. Perhaps you should all reevaluate your concept of a misguided culture because most of you are evidently under the imprssion that the "latest and greatest" is a necessity.

Well the co-creator of the ipod has already produced a thermostat that learns and connects to the home network. the have special outlet recpticles that can be controlled away from home via the ipod.TV's that are "smart". So why not MS break into home intergration. It is the way of the future. But this sounds more of something that probably be for the PC. Windows Media Center was alittle test bed for it,and the whole cloud thing. Remember embracing advancements in tecs advance our lifestyle and set us apart from other species. I personally would welcome the future of gaming. I can't wait for the day when I can Just close my eyes and see my games, the brain is the best unharnessed computer ever!!!

Laziness and luxary are not synonymous. Cutting corners at work is laziness. Taking a Segway to the mall is laziness.

To "do less" isn't necessarily laziness. It CAN be but not necessarily. Less input, more output is actually considered "efficient". Efficiency is a result of innovation. Facilitating convenience has always been a human condition. Why chase these quick rabbits and kill them with our bare hands when we can develop spears to throw at them and kill them to eat? Why drag around and lumber these heavy objects when we can invent the wheel and create a "cart" to tow them to their destination?

You see? It's not such a sinister concept. But honestly, you still missed the point. My point was that no one even said the next gen console would do this. This is just a speculation based on a technology Microsoft has yet to even reveal. And even if the next Xbox does exaclty what people here are hastily assuming who's forcing anyone to buy it?

My next point is -- people here need to learn how to smile. Christ, if you read the conversations that happen on most of these threads it's fucking depressing. It's like a bunch of rioting pessimists lit on fire running around in shit.

And so it begins. The machine are taking over. 2011 IT started with Skynet.. I mean Skinect... I mean KINECT... 2012 = Surface tablet and Windows phone 8 & Windows 8 working together with no problem. 2015 = Apple shares drop to 340 while Microsoft jumps up mysteriously to 98,575. The machines are taking over... U_U

You beat me to it with your Skynet and Borg comment!!! :) The good news is this patent is not an AI. So I doubt we'll see Borgs, Global Thermal Nuclear War, or Cylons taking over anytime soon. Haha!

Will all this added crap make it more expensive? Hopefully live doesn't go up another $10. Sticking to my quad core pc and xbox since I can still earn achievements for a while.

Stop Kinect and force on regluar/normal controllers. Kinect is well annoyed just like Wii and PS3'S Move. They are useless and more hardcore gamers want normal controllers all times. Go back to original Xbox where is only normal controller so bring next Xbox with it. Kinect 2 is fine but not into next Xbox just release both different consoles.

Maybe bring gamepad like Wii U they are fun. Kinect is crap now. Sorry Microsoft. ;P

Normal gamer here, I've been gaming since the first Nintendo came out and I love my Kinect. I wish people would stop assuming the world shares their opinions, everyone knows the new Xbox is a lot more powerful than the 360, I love how people are crying like its not going to play games. The more my Xbox can do the better, and I still mostly use it for games but I'm not gonna cry cause I can use it for Netflix and web surfing also. It still plays games just as good and the games are still getting better so if you don't want to play a Kinect don't play one, if you don't want to watch Netflix on your 360 than don't. It's not like when you put on a game your Xbox won't play it because A Facebook app destroyed your Xbox.

I always laugh at things like this. It is like hitting the eject button on my controller to open my disc tray. I still have to get my lazy ass up and switch discs. Sure maybe you can start your coffee pot or keurig with some app the new consoles will have, but you'll still have to get your lazy ass up to retrieve the cup.

I bet you 10 to one most of the kiddies here don't even know what Hal was, much less what classic Sci-Fi film it was from. Not saying everyone wouldn't know but I think alot of people here wouldn't.

Oh but I do.. being a huge Kuberic fan and all!

It makes me laugh how people go on about this topic. As stated already this is all just speculation on technology microsoft has acquired. Chill out fs! And on top of that i really doubt that if it ever did become a reality it'd make people more lazy. For a start most of us still have to work. It won't do that for us. Plus out lives don't revolve around sitting in our homes 24/7.

I think it'd be a great idea though, if our home lives are made easier then we can enjoy the things that make us happy more, like PLAYING GAMES!! (This is just one example of many other enjoyable hobbies)

Just for the sake of being lighthearted -

Unless I missed it, nobody has yet said:

"Xbox: Tea, Earl Grey, Hot'

Is that because I'm getting old? Or is it because Earl Grey tastes like dishwater? ;)

lol if your getting old, then I'm getting old to! And if it could do that then I'm getting one on launch day. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm earl grey!
(btw if your earl grey tastes like dishwater, try adding just a splash of milk or letting it brew for a few extra minutes. Make it so) ;)

@EVERYONE WHO OVEREACTED TO THIS NEWS ARTICLE

The XBOX360 has more choice of top games than many consoles before it in my opinion. I have never known so many top quality releases, theres no time to play them all! There is no danger of Microsoft sidelining games... All they are trying to do with XBOX is add more and more entertainment choices and options for its use. There is nothing wrong with that. Theres no reason to start a panic. Im sure there was a similar debate when Kinect was announced, because people dont like change. It didnt ruin XBOX, it only provides people with more choice. It doesnt matter if you dont use it because there is something for everyone and thats what they are trying to achieve. They want as many households as possible to have one under the TV. Makes perfect business sense to look at other ways to improve it and add more options, but lets not forget this is all speculation. They may add things to Xbox that you dont use or want but THEY ARENT TAKING ANYTHING AWAY FROM YOU so dont worry yourself about it

Ummm....my Apple phone can pull down the blinds, turn on the ceiling fan, adjust the thermostat, play the house speakers, program the hot water heater, open the garage, lock the doors, dim the lights, change the channel, start by blue ray player, and control my Xbox.

Seems a little behind the times if you ask me.

Also...people are complaining about price, Xbox has substantially increased its apps and connectivity to remain relevant to the casual gamer and has done so with cheaper Xbox live(4 annual accounts for $25 each) and cheaper consoles(250 for a 240gig).

Can you cry anymore about something we literally have no idea about?
