Tomb Raider Multiplayer Has Bleed Outs, Team Deathmatch

Details of Tomb Raider’s multiplayer have been revealed, including info on three different modes.

In Team Deathmatch a team of Lara's surviving allies and a group of hostile natives called scavengers fight it out in a best of three matches, with players alternating between sides.

The twist comes with the presence of destructible environments including bridges, and lever-based traps that spit out lethal spikes.

Another of the modes is called Rescue, in which survivors deliver med packs to destinations across the map, while scavengers try and rack up the kills.

There’s another mode too, called Cry for Help. Details on this one are a little scant, but apparently the mode emphasises exploration and collection, not combat.

Multiplayer takes a leaf out of Gears of War’s book, in that when you are downed you have a bleed out time that can be cut short with brutal finishers.

Players will be able to choose from a variety of characters, each with their own stats and loadouts. You can access weapons from the single-player campaign, including the bow, grenades, guns and an axe.

Plus, of course, there’s XP which can be used to improve your stats and buy new characters.

Tomb Raider’s multiplayer was announced over Christmas, to a skeptical reception. It will be developed by Deus Ex: Human Revolution creator Eidos Montreal.

The multiplayer info comes via Official Xbox Magazine, via the Tomb Raider forums. It's not official info, but looks to be on the money.

  • Because so much times has been added...
  • Im not sure this'll work.
  • Spend some more time in the Single Player and dont add MP things like this :(
  • This is like a kick in the balls for me, I really wanted this game :( I'll wait to see more about this
  • Doesn't sound great to be honest. Hopefully they'll keep 1000/1000 gs on single player.
  • So it's being developed by a second team - this is good, because Eidos Montreal are a good team, and it's good because it means development of the main game won't have been affected. On the other hand, usually in this situation the MP component feels pretty alien from the main SP. Also, why was this necessary? Tomb Raider is about story, exploration, and puzzle solving. Obviously it contains combat, but it's not the focus of the game. I don't see how MP is a positive addition to this series, I really don't. Much like the addition of MP to Uncharted, it's completely unnecessary. No we don't have to play it, yes it's optional, no we aren't being forced into it. What I'm concerned with is that the MP responsibility will be pushed onto the Crystal Dynamics dev team for future titles, and we will see a decline in the quality/polish/story of the SP game, which will lead us down the route of 'yet-another-generic-3rd-person-shooter'.
  • I guess what I'm saying is, this doesn't need diluting. The last thing we need is more generic derivative crap. There's enough of that floating about already.
  • LOL really! Coop or something non competitive may have worked possibly but it seems once again mp is tacked on to another sp game.
  • @6 you could have said that in one word: unnecessary
  • I was skeptical about what they would do but i must admit MP is sounding pretty good, it sounds like they have put alot of effort into it.
  • @8 yes why do companies think this is neccessary, imo it can only harm the game, its not going to be any good if other companies m/p attempts are anythink to go by.Toraider is a single playgame , always has been , always should be .
  • Don't see why people are bothered about multiplayer. Don't like it, don't play it, simple.
  • Groan, another one bites the dust!
  • @12. That's not the reason people are upset. It's because yet again a pointless multiplayer is tacked on to a game that until now has always been about the single player story. It's completely unnecessary much like many other games that have done this in the past. And in almost every case it never works out. Hopefully what I wrote actually makes sense, I'm half asleep right now :P The point is tt's not needed and they are only doing it because multiplayer is what is "in" right now. Not because it actually fits the game or they think they could make a really new and interesting experience.
  • Really? Why whine? people claiming this game as a failure before they even play it, because you know, someone is going to force you to play the MP! Play the portion of the game you want to play, you know that part that would of been there had MP been added or not. Aside from that, This is wonderful news!
  • I think the MP will suffice just because it's being produced by a group which has proved in the past to be absolutely awesome at making shit.
  • I can't imagine how the Tomb Raider engine could really adapt to Multiplayer... Then again, I thought the exact same thing about Assassins Creed, and that actually turned out pretty good, so I'll reserve judgement :)
  • To help #14 elaborate his point a little further, another very large worry is that to create MP content cost quite a few quid. Now that puts the amount of units sold to become considered a success by the publisher considerably higher. Cut a long story short, there is a very real possibility that studios or franchises can get canned due to "not meeting financial targets" all because some twat in a suit says "that CoD game does alright...."
  • It wont be long before we see MP in Hitman aswell.
  • It's a completely different team, has nothing to do with taking away from single player. You don't have to play it, there is no reason for anyone to complain.
  • @6 'So it's being developed by a second team - this is good, because Eidos Montreal are a good team, and it's good because it means development of the main game won't have been affected.' See this type of comment so often and it still makes no sense to me. How does spending £ on MP not affect the SP. it all comes out of the same budget, and will be £ that could have been spent on the SP to make it better. Unless the team developing the unnecessary MP are doing it for free; and we know that isn't the case. I'm pretty sure if you did a survey for TR fans, 9/10 would say they would rather have improved SP then add MP. Was so looking forward to this as well.
  • Sounds fun!
  • The most disappointing thing about this whole story is not that Tomb Raider has multiplayer, but that Eidos Montreal are being wasted on it. Deus Ex:HR was awesome, and they should be working on another Deus Ex game, or something of equal magnitude.
  • Just because it's another team does not always mean the SP will not be affected. The developers and publishers could take money away from it and put it into MP. So that just means they will probably cut out content and offer it as day one DLC or something that should have been included in first place.
  • @21 Plus there's the concern they may try and reduce manufacturing fees by keeping it all on one disc. This could potentially lead to SP content having to make way for the MP side of things. I'm hoping this won't be a problem; they are trying to totally reboot the series, and they might as well go all out by having multiple discs, if it's necessary. Only time will tell on that front.
  • They finally did it, there trying turn tomb raider into call of duty. I'm losing hope in humanity...........
  • So an action heavy MP mode is being developed by a team who had to outsource their boss fights to another company?
  • @26 rofl ... Tomb of duty - Camp or Raid
  • Thanks for making my decision to not waste Money on this Game even easier... Keep your Raid of Duty, MP Addons and Season Pass.. i'm getting Bioshock Infinite and Gears of War Judgement instead.
  • @6 i agree fully, and the fact that in this day and age people go after the achievements and they base there buying of a game on the achievement list which may relault is sale losses, alot of people will choose not to buy the game simply because of the mp if it has achievements before they even give it a try.
  • you know what personally i couldn't give a shit about the multiplayer and whether achievements are attached to it or not. all i know is im gonna more than likely enjoy the sp and achievements have just been a side attraction for me to keep playing the game (i just like to try and grab them all...if i can) :)
  • From the moment I played Tomb Raider on the PSX I was in love. But adding multiplayer will make this a game I used to know :(
  • Bommm, Bom Bom Bom bommm
  • @30 Yeah, I must Admit that Achievements sometimes dictate how I play a Game. In this Case i don't want to Spend Full Retail Price on this Game and even more on pointless Multiplayer DLC , which is the cheapest way to Milk Money out of Customers. I might get this Game later when it's on Sale besides im a Multiplatform Gamer so i can skip MP DLC because i don't give a damn about Trophies on Ps3.
  • Destructible environments are a 'twist' now? That's hardly unique!
  • Firstly, (and I say this every time!) not every game needs a multiplayer mode. More often than not, games that have the most successful multiplayer modes are the ones that people are happy to buy and then ignore the single player modes available, i.e. Gears, CoD, Battlefield and Halo - there are many, many people who play these games endlessly without every straying into the campaign. Secondly, when a game is reviewed, the whole package is taken into account, so if the developers put in an unoriginal or sub-par multiplayer mode, then it will affect the reviews and so potentially affect sales, and for a game such as Tomb Raider, where it is all about the story, this could be particularly problematic. I’m afraid we’re pretty much at the point where there are very few games that can actually compete in the multiplayer world with the big 4. It is also the case that any game attempting a multiplayer mode is compared to that big 4, each of which has had years to hone the quality, which in turn means that they are effectively setting themselves up to fail. The multiplayer mode in Tomb Raider will have a small spike in play upon release as people have a look and chase the inevitable achievements (which will have to be included in order to entice people to play the mode for any length of time), but then it will die a death just as in every other game that has attempted (and failed) to compete in what is a very closed market. The problem is, that the publishers will expect to hit certain sales targets, and the more that is included in the game, the more sales they expect to make. If the multiplayer is not successful, it is just possible that a sequel will not get made - and because of the big 4, I have strong doubts as to just how successful this will be.
  • Looking forward to it actually. These 'tacked on' multiplayers to previously SP franchises have provided a lot of enjoyment from Assassins Creed Brotherhood, Max Payne 3 and Mass Effect 3. @14: There will always be multiplayer games. It isn't an 'in' thing to play with others or to want to play with others be they friends or strangers. @18: This is Tomb Raider we're talking about here. It'll sell and have a decent player base for a long while. Not exactly Binary Domain. @21: There's only so much you can polish a turd before you see it for what it truly is. Would scrapping the MP entirely and adding the funds to SP make it any better? Longer definitely, sleeker production values but a better quality game? @27: Haha, Learn something new every day. @30: This is in actuality a very miniscule amount of people. @32: Yeah the multiplayer will be why it's different and you end up hating it, not entering the 3rd generation (or 4th if you include GoL) of this franchise. Not so hot on the idea of the DX:HR guys making it because I remember that game having some serious whack gunplay for the short time I played it. By the logic shown on this site some of you probably think Bioshock: Infinite is going to sell more copies now that it's scrapped it's MP and Co-op ambitions. Not bloody likely.
  • Deathmatch in Tomb Raider.........picard facepalm.
  • Also means that more than likely that instead of solid SP DLC we'll see countless map packs instead (see Max Payne 3) :-(
  • Gears Raider/Tombs of War...focus on the single player experience please.
  • This sound terrible. Please no Multi-player cheevos
  • Noooooooo........!!!!
  • Oh noes more gamemodes!!! :( Fucking morons
  • ...nope, struggling to see how this is going to work. This, coupled with the recent previews, have me a little worried to be honest.
  • Exactly how many long-time Tomb Raider fans were clamouring for team deathmatch?
  • I was going to buy this but now I'm going to pass. Consider this my protest of the recent trend of adding multiplayer to single player franchises.
  • Come on, multiplayer in any game could be deemed "unnecessary", but if it works, then why the hell not? I'm actually looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Extending play time in the Tomb Raider world by means of competitive and even co-operative multiplayer? Why not? Play before you judge folks.
  • Fuck that. I just won't play it at all, I'll Youtube the SP. These companies never learn because of stooges like #37, trying to make you feel bad if you don't give in and buy, buy, buy. It isn't even about the Achievement side of things, thought that's shit as well. Mass Effect 3 was shit, SP and MP both--none of this 'it was good until the end' rubbish. It was a mindless shootbang with auto dialog and none of the charm of the other two. Shit. Max Payne 3 was shit, SP and MP. MP added nothing, and the SP couldn't decide what generation it wanted its gameplay to be from. Then again, there's no remedy like Remedy. Short that it was never going to be good unless you're a gaping simpleton who loves motion capture cut scenes. Assassins Creed... not entirely shit, but took a huge dive from Revelations onward. I don't think anything short of a reboot will save it from the steaming pile of 3. MP added nothing worthwhile to the series, even if it was a little more creative than most, mode-wise. This also benefitted from regular iteration which meant much of the assets were ready to go from day one. If Brotherhood were the second AC, with the change in setting and all, it would have hurt the SP a LOT more. Bioshock 2 was shit, it aped everything from one but got none of it right. The MP was buggy and forgettable five seconds after you quit it out of boredom. Oh, but it has dual-wielding, bros! Bitch please. GTA4 was definitely compromised by anything other than freeroam MP, those obnoxious co-op missions and the dreadfully yawn inducing side stuff like races. This is maybe the only game with SP not expressly damaged by MP, but it certainly killed most peoples interest in the achievements for it. Uncharted was always a poor mans Tomb Raider shootbang for folks who hurt their brains trying to solve Tomb Raiders already super easy puzzles and got bored by exploration. It was overrated (though glossy) shit from the start but it was demonstrably more shallow and pointless when MP appeared and SP became ME3 (all shootbang and cinematics). Even the platforming was toned down to accommodate the MP bro's. But they keep selling. Sad thing is, many of you who are voicing disappointment are shills who aren't even being paid and don't realise it, you're just going to be weak when the time comes and listen to the others like 37 and buy it, then you'll be in denial that you were taken so easily (yet again) and you'll perpetrate the lie that any of these games weren't utterly ruined by MP (they were, most of them anyway). It's like politics, you whinge and whinge, but then you vote the lesser of two (or three) evils and ignore the outliers because 'lol, no chance' and then whinge some more when you got what you voted for. It's a bucket of crabs, keeping each other down. MP is a cancer for anything but shooters and sports. well... and I guess stuff like board/card games, but that's hardly relevant. Go ahead and down-vote this fount of wisdom and truth, you know I'm right.
  • I'm not too happy about this, Tomb Raider has ALWAYS been single player, but i'm still getting the game prob wont touch multiplayer.
  • @32 I read your arti in the style of GOTYE! OT: TR time has past looong ago with me.
  • this game just dropped WAY down on the list of games that i care about in 2013. i'd take a great single player game with no multiplayer any day over splitting the dev time and getting what now will probably be a mediocre single player and a horrible multiplayer.
  • They should stop making single player games! COD GOTY
  • fucking shit doesn't need multiplayer, its always been a single player game, why the fuck add multiplayer? some games do take away from the single player experience, not saying this one will, but definatley doesn't need it. Pretty sure its just a tack on to make more people buy the game.
  • I don't get why people are mad about tomb raider being single player. it still is. They just have multiplayer modes with it. that does not make the story mode any less single player. I think all the hate just comes from people hoping there wont be any multiplayer achievements. that shouldn't be a reason to call off the game. (and cod isn't the only game with multiplayer. why does every one compare games with mp to cod? that's stupider than this game having multiplayer.)
  • It's now official, I will NOT be getting this game. Such a shame. FUCK ALL THIS MP SHIT NOW-A-DAYS. So many good games have been ruined.
  • Boooooo!!!
  • The reason they've put on mp cos its piss easy cheap dlc to add on rather than campaign dlc mark my words I will be right. If there are mp achs then I'm cancelling my pre order. Only way they will stop slapping unwanted mp is to vote with your wallet and not buy it
  • To anyone defending this as "Don't like it don't play it." You're on a site dedicated to achievements, people don't want multiplayer achievements in what up until a couple months before it's release was marketed as a single player experience.
  • Not buying it, sorry.
  • What is your next move, Square? Adding MP to Final Fantasy?
  • Scrap it, put all your effort into the single player!
  • @60 - Uhm.... Excited for this one, let's just say thank fuck devs don't take advice from the people who comment on this site, otherwise the game industry would be ass.
  • So online pass then?
  • I don't have a ps3 But TR make a gd single player game, we're judge it on those merits. But let Uncharted take its crown n stop copying it, just because U took too fecking long getting some decent machanics n gameplay in your games. You left it simply too long.
  • You guys are so stupid, your not buying a game BECAUSE it has a Team Deathmatch mode which you don't even have to play... If you don't buy it, it won't do very well and call of duty will continue to be the best of the best.
  • Wasn't sure how I felt about the MP reception. But it being developed by a separate studio is GOOD. Means that the SP shouldn't suffer. Still. Day 1 purchase.
  • so lots of hard work etc has gone into... team death match, escort and what sounds like it will be capture the flag from those buszzwords. brilliant i really wish these companies would piss off with this, i thought skyrim might have been a positive influence and shown that SP franchises dont need this bullshit
  • This actually sounds really bad.
  • Cancelled my pre-order and I won't regret it.
  • This just dropped from the top of my 'must haves' to the bottom of my 'bargain bins'
  • Uncharted put in a multiplayer and it turned out to be an outstanding component to the game just as fun as the campaign. I laugh at all those saying that because it has multiplayer they are no longer getting it. Because that totally destroys all the appeal of the single player, the reason you wanted it in the first place. Gotta love people
  • @71 I didn't enjoy Uncharted MP mode I did like the co-op. I also enjoy Assassin Creed MP. So Not every game needs MP and not everyone is going to enjoy the MP. Tomb Raider should not be getting MP at all. It's been a Single Player franchise for over a decade.
  • I don't really like the sound of this, but there are apparently some more modes that they haven't revealed yet.
  • I felt the same way when I heard about Mass Effect multiplayer. I'll be picking up anyway so any additional mode is... nice
  • @50 Agh I'm glad someone noticed ;)
  • I personally don't see why they did this, though if there are little if not any mp achievements it wont turn out bad, though i do think that this should have been a sp game only, it wont become automatically shit even if the mp is horrible. (which i doubt it will be)will be a good game nonetheless cant wait for its release.
  • @ 48 You are one jaded and ingorant SOB.. you know that? Your opinions remind me of those crybaby Star Wars fans that bitched and moaned about the new digital footage in the films. Thanks for the laugh!
  • Not looking forward to this at all
  • I haven't signed into this site in almost a year, but I just had to comment on the people cancelling pre-orders and talking about they aren't gonna get this game because of the MP. You guys are idiots and do not deserve to call yourselves gamers. Plain and simple. Go ahead and down thumbs my comment to make yourselves feel better.
  • @79 "You guys are idiots and do not deserve to call yourselves gamers. Plain and simple." Yeah, how dare people not buy things they dont like or dont want. Probably a good thing you dont come here often if it saves us reading drivel like that.
  • My nerves is that Tomb Raider's campers and noobs ruin MP just like CoD and Halo and other MP games. Square Enix is stupid move for it. Very sad Tomb Raider is all about Single-player. Sad Square Enix is ruin this franchise. :((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
  • But if achievements is only for single-player then I give Square Enix a chance. :))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
  • I'm so tired of people crying about MP. I'm not a big fan of MP cheevos, but always loved having the ability to play it as an option. I will buy this day one, online cheevos or not. I love me some cheevos, however it doesn't dictate my purchases or enjoyment of a game.
  • @79 do everyone a favour mate and don't sign in for another couple of years. Like #80 said how dare we hesitate to by this game. It's people like you that make me feel embarrassed to be a "gamer" at times.
  • You have to hand it to Square Enix, it's a pretty epically oxymoron thing to introduce multiplayer into a franchise that out-dates online multiplayer by years. They obviously must think that everyone played the original in 1996 is either dead or has been brain-washed into thinking MP makes every game ever more playable x6. It's starting to get a bit disturbing how many franchises have turned to shit, and most of them have tacked on MP - same as this shit. RIP Tomb Raider 1996-2013
  • @48 cool story bro, tell it again.
  • OMG!!! Is this real? Lets put MP in all the games, because perhaps we can make a buck or two. I like contracts in hitman. I like MP in COD. They make sence. I just don't see a sensible way of putting MP in Tomb Raider. Tomb raider is as most people said focused on SP, adventure, exploring! You can't have team deathmatch, bunch of Lara's shooting eachother? You really don't want to play with no named characters, do you? Tomb Raider is Lara Croft! And really dealing out medpacks? Here have some! They are free. I don't mind MP as long as it makes sence. This just makes me want ask why? Why? So could the person who came up with this idea please stand up? I want to say something to you. Someting from a movie (do you know wich one?):: McFlyyyy you are terminated! Read my fax! You're fired!
