No big loss for me... don't play any of those games at all not even the current versions of the games. Thing is.. those games are only 2 years old. There are games that came out 5 years ago.. some are 10 years old a least and the server for those games are still up and running. My Girlfriends son still plays Fifa 2011 with his friends as the don't play the new games and that is the one they prefer playing... this will cause them to stop playing a game with each other just cause EA.. One of the biggest Developers and producers of games. with all that cash just don't wanna pay for servers.. I say they should keep the servers running for people that like the older games.. I have friends that have FIFA 2013 and they got rid of it after a month cause it was crap. they have went back to FIFA 2012 cause they prefer that one to the new one |

| Raise your hands, how many of you will be affected by this but quickly moved on to a different game? They look at peak online activity and less than 1% of you play the game. Oddly enough, gamers have the opportunity to delay server shutdowns. Stop buying their yearly releases and this might not happen so often. |

maybe if they didn't tack the shitty online pass system into all of their games, there would be a bigger pool of people using the servers. how about ea shutdown their exclusivity contracts that prevent anyone else from making a sports game instead of their servers? that sounds like a great idea. it sucks when shitty companies monopolize a genre. |

EA can suck it. I have stopped buying their games all together, I just rent them. I refuse to keep paying for an incomplete experience. I can still play Perfect Dark Zero (2005) online if I wanted to, but not an EA game after 2 years. |

@20 - Why can't those game have a host-option so you can run your own server, just like many, many other games? Because people wouldn't buy the newer version of the game. They actually force people to get a 'newer' version if you want to keep playing online. EA - It's not about the game, it's all about the money. |

| And this is why i'll never buy another sports game published by EA, I wouldn't mind so much if their games didn't have online achievements, but unachievable stuff really bugs me and Essentially making part of the game unusable after 2 years is terrible, I think the prices of their games should reflect this. |

@2 I agree. Just look at Bungie (prior to 343 switch) supporting Halo 2 and 3 servers. Halo 2's MP servers were up for what, 5 or 6 years? Halo 3's are still up to this day! Just because a new title comes out doesn't mean you should shut down old servers! |

""The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy," the publisher states on its official site. "The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. But as games get replaced with newer titles" Maybe stop replacing them every fucking year then you idiots. The world won't end if we don't get a new Madden, FIFA, NBA, and NHL game every year. Instead of constantly pumping a new one out each year, keep the current one alive with DLC. Or at least stop with the fucking online passes, it's bullshit to ask people to buy the damn things when the money doesn't go to keeping the game's server running. |

Correct me if i'm wrong...but is this why i can't play DS2 online or Mercs 2 AT ALL? (obviously older servers closes are the cause but really?) i mean i understand pandemic closed it's doors a few years ago...but you couldn't set it up so i can play mercs without completely disconnecting my console...these people act like it costs them money to let us play old stuff online...five bucks says i could boot up unreal tournament '03 on the pc and find more games than i could for ANY current EA title....(Madden doesn't count) that being said...who cares if they shut down SPORTS game servers? the fans of those games do that to themselves every year they pay 60 bucks for a retail patch. |

| Just get rid of the online achievements and problem solved. I never attempt them anyways because by the time i finish all the offline ones, and decide to go for the online ones their servers are getting ready to shutdown,, its a joke. Make one game of each sport and just have a roster update and uniform update for each team and sport and i'd be happy and save $60+ each title every year..oh but wait they'd be losing money and i'd be saving money...silly me! |

I left out a key point...an above poster said something about 'let us host...remove leaderboard...etc..." and i agree...obviously dedicated servers cost money and take up needed space for devs/publishers...but this is no justification to allow someone to walk into a Gamestop, pay cash for a game, take it home, find out a server connection is required, and that said server has been shut down...the saddest part? Mercs 2 has NO competitive multiplayer! why can't we user host a 2 player co-op game? Bottom line...EA cannot convince (and should not be able to convince) anyone that a dedicated server is REQUIRED for a single player game. EA has come a long way in their support of third party titles..but seriously...yearly sports franchise titles are creating an uncool paradigm shift in business practice. lol and take this being my second post how you will (hoping this isn't GFAQS 2.0) |

| Well this is obviously the only downside to dedicated servers... and is also the reason why I havn't bought a POS EA game since Fight Night Round 2. People say dedicated servers are so much better when they can be taken down at anytime due to cost of maintainance. |

EA need some competition in the sporting genre i think, apart from the NBA 2k franchise they are just doing as they please with consumers now, if 2k or some other company could land a blow with a great Football game or Golf, Ice Hockey, etc. They would actually have to start giving a shit about the reaction of the masses, but until that happens we are all at there mercy, for they saturate the market and there is absolutely no competition any more. Roster updates and shiny new menus are pretty much all you get these days in a EA sports title and then after a year or two they say fuck you very much for your money you can't play our games online anymore even though it says online multiplayer on the back of the game case and they include online achievements and season passes and the list goes on...turds. |

Forum Posts: 38 | Comment #48 by wacko3.16 Wednesday, January 02, 2013 @ 08:06:23 PM | |
If EA expect to get away with this year in, year out, they need to do one of the following: 1) Stop releasing yearly titles for the same games to stop so many servers from existing or; 2) Make their DLC free for the duration of the games life as this just becomes wasted money 2 years down the line. The reason I say this is because of FIFA and the Ultimate Team. Now I do not like FIFA games any more as I feel the titles are just the same year in, year out, but people spend shed loads of money on this stuff to get the so called UT. Make it skill based or unlockables or something, just stop with this crap. I still play Tiger Woods 12 and at this rate it seems as though I wont be able to play it next year which would be a disgrace with the amount of DLC I bought for it to play online with my friends. Sort it out EA!!!!! Rant over :) |

@53 im sorry, 3 or 4 years old ? most of these games are 2 years old, hence the 2011 tag in the title, weve only just started 2013, its ridiculous that EA expect people to shell out for online passes then pull this crap, licensing issues (marvel, lord of the rings) is one thing but a game thats not even out for 2 years and EA will still happily sell it without any warning of no online service, absolute cunts. personally i dont like the yearly sports games so im not gonna miss out, but i know people who do. EA should just stop this, i mean theyve got enough money to end world hunger so whats a couple of fucking servers ?! greedy fucks, in an ideal world THQ or silicon knights would inherit there money and EA can go bust, dont think anyone would care if 2K were still making sports games |

FIFA 11 is 3 years old now anyway... So that doesn't suprise me. If they where shutting off FIFA 12 servers I could understand people being pissed off, but if it's an on going series that uses the same server system, why slow things down for the newer ones? Also nobody can say that it's a similar thing with halo or cod, as these are NOT server based, they are created as a peer to peer bases, the only thing needed from Microsoft or activision for the games, is the matchmaking setup which is extremely minimal, meaning they can leave them running forever without it ever effecting the newer stuff. EA still have shit servers even when they do these shut downs.. FIFA 13 still signs out of its EA servers like FIFA 12 has done from day 1 and still will till it's dying day. |
