UK Physical Video Game Sales Drop 17.6% in 2012
Written Wednesday, January 02, 2013 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

Digital sales of video games in the UK reached £552 million during 2012, an increase of almost 8% over 2011.

It means that the games industry now constitutes around half of the UK’s entire £1 billion digital entertainment business, which is also up 11.4% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, physical sales continue to slump, down 17.6% in 2012.

“This reflects [consumers'] huge investment in new and innovative services – which means you can buy music, video and games literally at any time of the day and wherever you are,” said ERA director general Kim Bayley.

“At the same time I suspect that many people will be surprised to learn just how resilient the physical business still is, with three-quarters of entertainment sales still on disc.

“Downloads offer convenience and portability, but people still seem to value the quality and tangibility of a physical product.”

Wasn't there a discussion about the new Xbox having downloadable games only?

I swear this site was having a discussion about it a few months ago? I like physical copies of my games too btw.

I don't mind digital when the price is good, or for XBLA games. I have a few Games-on-demand but 90% of my games are still retail because it's often cheaper after a few months and also because I don't need to download the game (I have a slow internetion connection so it can take a while to download something).

Never going to understand the satisfaction of owning digital downloads, when you can own a physical copy. Shelves full of games, movies, TV and CD's will always beat files on a hard drive.

@13 are you high, go to any decent site Play.com, Amazon, Zavvi, TheHut, Ebay, etc and I can get most games at least 10% cheaper than digital and if I'm not an idiot and pre order I can have the game come early or at least on the day, if your ordering a older game and you can't wait 2-3 days for it to be delivered then you are a sad and impatient person. Good example Gears 3 GonD £39.99, were as I can get it from amazon for a whooping £13.49 and for that I get the smell of the new game and when I get bored I can either sell it my friend for a fiver or stick it on ebay/trade in.

Yes, many people have spouted this at different points, and as I've said every time, I call BS.

The new Xbox will not be download only. Microsoft are well aware that physical sales trump digital, and they are invested in making their system a home entertainment 'hub'. They aren't going to do that by preventing people from playing their back catalogues of discs, therefore the system will have a drive. Whether it will have Blu-Ray or not is up for debate, but it will definitely have at least a DVD drive.

Given that the new tech is going to have a processing power boost over the current generation, but otherwise isn't likely to be much of a leap, I'd suggest that backwards compatibility with 360 titles is very high on the list of development priorities (Why? Because software attach rates on 360 are high, and Microsoft will want to capitalise on that). For that to work, again, the new system will need at least a dvd drive.

Download only on a home console for the next generation would make it extremely niche (restricting use to those with reliable high speed broadband - believe it or not, still not the majority of users). Microsoft aren't into restricting their number of customers, and they don't do niche.

The only thing that would make me buy a digital release over a physical one, is 50% discount on a DAY ONE release. They should test it with a triple A title just to see how well it does, and how much money the actual DEVELOPERS of the game get instead of the store that sells it.

@23 I'm with you. If people want to buy physical, let them. On games I *know* I won't sell, I'll take a digital version at a discount, thanks very much. Chances are I'd buy digital mainly as I tend not to sell games.

Having bought hundreds (possibly thousands) of LP's, games, cd's and DVD's over the last 30 years, the appeal of having physical copies has long since gone as all most of them do is take up space.

Shocked by this news (at least how high the number is anyway). I think I've had more physical games this year than the past 4! I prefer a solid copy in my hand. Even better if it's swish like the HALO 4 CE.

As a gamer who sells their copy after I get all I can out of a game, I always get the physical copies (except for XBLA and XBLIG). I never buy any games on demand, even if they are cheaper because they have ZERO re-sell value.

One of the biggest problems with digital only is bandwidth, not everyone is on or can afford unlimited broadband so they will be really limited as to how much they can download. On some tarrifs the monthly bandwidth is so low they could probably download an arcade game and be done for the whole month. Ultimately this would drastically affect the sales of a lot games. Therefore physical has to always be offered. It's different to music and films because they don't take up anywhere near the amount of space a game does.

Another thing, people who are on unlimited broadband are more likely to download a game if the prices are similar to physical retail copies. The prices of Games on Demand products is absolutely outrageous.

@#27 You also make a good point. Retail stores often have promotions on where you can trade in certain games to get credit towards a preorder or something similar. I personally don't trade any games in as I generally feel ripped off in a lot of cases, however it's always nice to have the option.

I dont care how bad sales drop for hard copies I do not and will not believe that people are paying the grossly overinflated digital prices of games.....who pays £45-50 for a digital game 2 years old when the same game can be bought for £20-35 on the high street of online retailers

@24: Storage is my issue as well. I'm collecting video games since the late 80s and don't know where to put all the stuff now. My appartment is full, my basement is cluttered with video game related boxes and even my parents' basement is full with my stuff, not with games and consoles but with bazillion manga I used to buy between 199x and 2009. I'd love to turn all this into a (legal) digital copy and play it on an unmodified console. :/

I want to add that before I switch to digital download only, prices must be adapted accordingly and region restrictions MUST fall.
I don't want to be forced to buy a game's localised release. If I want to buy a spanish (language) game for example, let me do it. Region locks are evil. But with digital distribution, publishing processes gotta change anyway. Maybe there's still hope.

Fairly certain that this isn't the only reason for the drop... Recently gaming has been a hit in the 'casual' market (As we all know, unfortunately). The increase in retail sales will be no doubt influenced by this and perhaps those gamers have now grown tired of their games console and haven't bought any more games for it. Obviously this is speculation, but I think it likely.

its apples to oranges here. this doesn't say digital/physical CONSOLE sales, it says game sales.

we have dwindling console sales because our consoles are obsolete dinosaurs that are on the verge of being replaced, meanwhile downloading shitty casual games (angry birds etc.) on phones and tablets is currently the trendy thing to do.

this isn't a sign of transition to digital, this is just a blip on the radar.

oh, and the idea that digital downloads provide "portability" is the funniest thing i've read all day. i'm assuming that quote came from a marketing person. anyone who wants to resell, loan or borrow a digital item knows exactly how "portable" it is.

Digital's nice and convenient, but I'm no fan of the fact that you have no way to return a shit or broken game (something I suspect publishers are in no hurry to remedy). Also Steam's refusal to allow a proper option to play offline seriously annoys me. Hardly fair that I have no access to my collection if my net goes down without notice.

I like the convenience of digital downloads aswell as how often you can get good deals.

I play on PC aswell so I'm used to Steam sales, Humble Bundles, Green Man Gaming, Amazon, etc. And every couple weeks I get that same "Wow that's a good deal" feeling I see maybe once a year on Xbox Live Marketplace.

Only thing that Console trumps on for me is that the new AAA titles go cheaper faster due to used copies being available. But typically you don't have to wait long on PC for someone to have a 30% coupon or something.

As a guy with 6 giant tubs of Vinyl I can now say at this age the feeling of owning the physical copy no longer matters. They honestly just take up space.

@ 23 while I do agree with your general opinion, even 1/2 off isn't enough to sway be to buy any game digitally that is also available on disk. Personally I'd rather pay double and have the physical media itself. I own over 120 XBLA titles and two GOD titles that arn't available anywhere else which is the reason I bought them in the first place.

I know this is inevitable.. COMPLETE DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION, but I think we still have one more generation to go before it happens. Next gen we'll probably see digital game sales skyrocket much more than they did this gen and when that starts getting to the point where people are actually buying more digital versions of games than retail (and they actually prefer doing so) that's when we will see the end of physical disks.

On the contrary though, Digital Distribution isn't going to happen to films as quickly as it is going to happen to games. I don't think avid movie buffs are going to accept anything less than a physical copy with lossless sound In DTS HD master audio and real 1080P. Neither streaming or a digital version will ever outsurpass a bluray disk.

Personally I'll probably inevitably accept the changes that are to come to gaming, but I wont be as forgiving when and if digital distribution takes over the home movie market.

the day videogames goes 100% digital I'm done. I love having the real thing and being able to play it anytime I want and not have to rely on servers or any other bs. If it ever does go full on digital I will have a backlog of physical games from nes on to play over till I'm dead.

Compare the number of quality XBLA, PSN and Steam titles released in 2012 to the number of quality physical titles. Now factor in price, sales frequencies, and critical reception.

You'll soon realise that it isn't the consumer making a conscious choice to switch to digital, it's that the digital market is currently handled very well and offers highest value for money as it stands.

I'm not against digital distribution but it has it's place, mainly for XBLA/indie. It's certainly great for music but for films and games I will always want a physical copy. Especially with games as I don't tend to replay things once I've finished them, I want the option to sell on my paid for property once it's no longer of any use to me, something digital does not allow and publishers want to crush.
