THQ Files For Bankruptcy, Unannounced Games Revealed
Written Thursday, December 20, 2012 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

THQ has filed for bankruptcy, as part of a plan to sell all of the company’s games and assets to private investment firm Clearlake Capital Group for $60 million.

The publisher says that bankruptcy is a positive step that will enable the sale of the company and hopefully ensure that its in-development titles make it to shelves.

As part of the agreement THQ will sell its "four owned studios and games in development". The plan is for the publisher to continue working as normal during the sale process.

"The sale [of the company] needs to be completed through a Chapter 11 proceeding of the Bankruptcy code," THQ president Jason Rubin explained in an open letter.

"The most important thing to understand is that Chapter 11 does not mean the end of the THQ story or the end of the titles you love. Quite the opposite is true, actually.

"Chapter 11 is a safety net for U.S. companies. American Airlines is currently in Chapter 11 restructuring, yet I flew back and forth on that airline when I visited Volition two weeks ago. Donald Trump and his companies have been in Chapter 11 four times.

"You can add to that list household names such as Macy's, Eddie Bauer, the Chicago Cubs, Chrysler, Delta Airlines, General Motors, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Marvel Studios, and MGM, among many others.

"MGM filed Chapter 11 two years ago, and this year it released Skyfall and The Hobbit, two of the biggest titles of the year. That's what I mean when I say new start!

"Whatever happens, the teams and products look likely to end up together and in good hands. That means you can still pre-order Metro: Last Light, Company of Heroes 2, and South Park: The Stick of Truth.

"Our teams are still working on those titles as you read this, and all other rumored titles, like the fourth Saints Row, the Homefront sequel, and a lot more are also still in the works."

Indeed, tucked away in THQ’s bankruptcy filing are details on every game the company has in development, including projected sales numbers.

The list reveals that the four THQ-owned studios, Turtle Rock, THQ Montreal, Relic Entertainment and Vigil Games, are all working on new, unannounced IP. And though we know little about the contents of these games, we do know their working titles.

Left 4 Dead creator Turtle Rock Studios is developing a co-op action game called ‘Evolve,’ THQ Montreal - led by Assassin's Creed creative lead Patrice Désilets - is working on something called ‘1666,’ Space Marine developer Relic Entertainment is making a game called ‘Atlas,’ and Darksiders dev Vigil Games is working on ‘Crawler’ alongside Saints Row 4.

You can see THQ’s predictions for its upcoming slate of games below, in an image taken direct from THQ’s bankruptcy filing.

THQ buried THQ, no one else. They chose to do some ridiculous things with games like Saints Row: The Third. Oh, like what you say? You must've not heard about the add-on for Saints Row: The Third which they said was an April fools prank, then confirmed it, then decided to delay it so it can be a stand-alone title, then scrapped it altogether, then re-confirmed it as an addition to the next Saints Row game.

They played monopoly with real money and lost, HARD!

Sad to see 'em go, but happy to see 'em go too. Publishers like that deserve no sympathy.

The funny thing is that more or less being bought outright until things are sorted, so you'll get all of the titles (South Park, Metro, COH...) They aren't dead, they're basically restructuring the company.

I really hope this doesn't turn from bad to worse, as I love all of THQ's published games and I'd hate to see them die completely.

Also Lee as a note, Vigil only made Darksiders & not saints row, its Volition who are working on Saints Row 4.

@6 actually saints row is one of the reason they were able to go as long as they did, if anything the udraw tablet destroyed thq as nobody bought it there is wharehouses full of them it cost them millions upon millions of dollars.
also darksiders 2 not selling anywhere near the projected numbers and a few other titles that where medicore at best.
But as stated saying saints row 3 is there reason for failure is retarded its there best selling game in years

Well, I think we all knew this would happen eventually. Since they aren't being driven into the ground like companies that made a horrible game (see Eurocom), I think THQ will still be around.

Don't feed the trolls, people. Just move along, quiet and smoothly...

OT: What are the chances of a new Red Faction coming out, I wonder? THQ and Volition were both involved in the previous two, so I'm kinda curious.

@15 And what is you opinion of Bethesda, who gave us DLC that just made our horse look tougher? And yeah, I wish people wouldn't make a big deal of this, they are in good shape and this is more of a step that leads to being bought out, and not a step towards going away. Someone will pick them up, pump some money into them, and everything will be fine.

bankruptcy is never good. i'm very concerned about THQs future. their products may change. i loved how they did wrestling, saints row, extra. but this allows new people to fill in those jobs. uncertain the future is for this company. sceptical i am. also, in canada, this increases my insurance too. i wish them well. but will wait on new products.

I'm glad they have found a way to stay afloat. In these times, when ppl tend to buy games off second hand market unless you're very popular it's hard to keep up with so many releases. I myself will be buying most of these brand new (as always=D) and am interested in all those new projects.

I like how he compares THQ to Donald Trump and MGM. These two at least provide solid entertainment. THQ would have been better off leaving this games list off of their Chapter 11 filing because they are just embarrassing.

I mentioned somewhere that I was convinced that THQ overestimates its games and that little table of their sales predictions proves it.

Did they announce the other day that 5 million people played SR: TT just so they could predict they'd sell 5 million copies of SR4? Kinda looks like it.

And Homefront 2, Evolve and 1666 selling 4 million copies apiece seems like wishful thinking as well.

The only game I think they've UNDERestimated the sales on seems to be South Park which I think will do better than they do...

@6 thas not the only game. Look at darksiders 2 that kicked them in the ass. They never did a beta at all so when the game came out there were glitches up the ass. The dlc for any dlc sucks. Thq needs to go. They even have horible customer service al yhe give as as an answeris were working on the issue. 2 months later there answer is still the same. Fuck Thq. They put them selves in the hole

@14 - THQ killed it with Armageddon. Ignoring the PC originals, which don't really count here, they took a sprawling open world game, full of things to destroy, and turned it into a short corridor shooter. Destroying things tended to mean you had to then rebuild the entire room, as you couldn't get out otherwise.

Y'all talking about Saints Row: The Third selling so well. 5.5 million people played the game, it's not the number of copies shipped/sold.

I am a fan of Saints Row, Metro and Darksiders too. I also want the South Park game to be released, but you can't sugarcoat Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It is what it is and it's not pretty. Would th bank give you a million dollar loan if you have a strike to your name? Of course they won't, you're screwed and as is THQ!

Silly, ignorant gamers. Bet some of you didn't even know that South Park almost didn't happen at all, yet you're here predicting the "bright future" of a company which is buried in debt.

Humble THQ Bundle made them money, which would of paid their lawyers to try and keep them away from bankruptcy.

uDraw was what lost them a lot of money. Not Saints Row:The Third/It's Dominatrix DLC. Over 4 million isn't a bad sales figure to have. It is down to what the public buy. Darksiders 2 whilst not my cup of tea is a good game and got good enough reviews (7's-8.5's) but it didn't sell. Where as you see MOH: Warfighter which is a game everyone rails on. Said game climbed high in the charts and may still be in some of the charts. Saying hurtful things like "THQ will die out haha" is pretty petty. That's people's jobs! Hopefully they will get help/sort themselves out as it would be a shame to see them go.

You are right, over 4 million isn't a bad sales figure. But one single game can't keep a large company afloat, especially with numbers like that.

Here's hoping that they recoup and learn from whatever mistake(s) they made.

@49 Please quit being so damn negative. People are just 'hoping' ThQ will get back on their feet to release some of these titles. The main one I'm hoping for is SR4. But like you said their buried deep into debt and most of the workers will be jobless. Just let people dream, is that asking to much?
