Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Debut Trailer Jumps Around

Essentially Final Fantasy XIII-3, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is set to be the final chapter in the FFXIII saga, which sees Lightning (obviously. It's in the title) setting off on her ultimate journey to put an end to the whole convoluted insanity.

As this first trailer for the game shows, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will throw some platform-jumping elements into the mix, with the pink-haired lass leaping onto red ledges and red ladders, not unlike Faith from Mirror's Edge. Although, entirely unlike Faith in that it's viewed from a third-person perspective rather than a first-person one.

Lock your eyeballs onto the trailer below for a first proper look at Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which will be winging its way onto consoles on 2013.

  • Looks ok I hope they bring some more characters into the mix, because only having Serah and Noel in 13-2 got a bit boring.
  • When it shows her first running/jumping around in the actual gameplay (0:46), did anybody else think off Assassin's Creed? Looks like there is a new combat system too, the paradigms look like they're still there, but it looks like there is a bit more input on the players part (assigning different commands to different directions and pressing them manually maybe?). Also, Lightning looks the tits. A bit Altair, but still awesome. Hoping this one persuades me to buy it, the second one did do a good job of it.
  • I love Lightning, one of my favourite characters in the FF franchise BUT this just looks pathetic and since i didn't really enjoy FF13-2 i'll definitely give this a miss.
  • Still haven't fired up XIII-2, have had it since day one but just working on so many other games.
  • The trailer looks nice. I have Episode I and II of FFXIII in my collection and will be pre-ordering this once a date is released. I actually enjoyed FFXIII Episode II unlike some others. Kinda curious though how we go from the ending of Episode II to this plot in Episode III. Unless Light found a way to go far enough back in time or something? Maybe someone can clarify this. Cause I haven't kept up with the news on Episode III of FFXIII: Lightning Returns.
  • Looks like it'll be another case of waiting for it to drop in price.
  • XIII-2 was a marked improvement over the original, hopefully this follows through. The gameplay looks more like Crisis Core than a traditional RPG, but Crisis Core was brilliant, so no complaints there. I just hope it ties up the story. Hell of a cliffhanger there at the end of XIII-2.
  • Idk final fantasy has been getting worse and worse in my opinion. I remmeber Final fantasy 7 and 9(Two of the best games I ever played. I still havent even finished final fantasy 13 never mind 13-2.
  • @7: I agree with the cliffhanger ending. I was like WTF? Hoping to see Serah and Noel again since I actually liked them but I know a lot of fans didn't care for them. On a side note: I was hoping Light would retain her ability to wear her Valkyrie Armor.
  • Enjoyed XIII and XIII-2. Looking forward to it.
  • Would be much better if this was the finaly chaper in the FF series. I think enough is enough.
  • Hmm, I never did get around to it. Maybe they will release all of them as a complete FFXIII package and then I can play while waiting for some sales or deals on new consoles next year or more=)
  • @6 Agreed. XIII was fun, XIII-2 was too, but the story was sub-par and convoluted. I will play this, but definitely not paying full retail. Bargain bin... for the win.
  • So this means they can finally start working on Kingdom Hearts 3 right?
  • @13: I think the only problem I had with FFXIII-2 is the time travel. Time Travel stories are very hard to tell. Even harder when you had a realm where time had no meaning. I mean from what I saw from Lightning's one DLC it was actually took place during the whole events of FFXIII-2 in Valhalla but didn't catch up to her till the main ending of the game. Hope the fix that a little with FFXIII-3 Lightning's Return. Cause clearly she finds a way to go far enough back in time to try and correct the problems that happened in the 2nd game.
  • @ 11 The series has pioneered gaming and is probably older than you are, but youd like it to end on a whim? Stick to shooters.
  • I didn't play the Lightning DLC for XIII-2. Did it even begin to tie up anything for the story?
  • @17: Besides getting Valkyrie Lightning's Crystal which is the strongest Warrior crystal in my opinion. It also covers a bit of the story when Lightning fights Caius right after Noel leaves and discovers what happens at the end of the game. Basically it adds to the main game's ending when you see everything has gone full circle. May want to get the Lightning's DLC later or look for the cutscenes on youtube.
  • Video link is dead. Copyright? Gyahaha
  • Looks like the trailer got pulled.
  • I know this is off subject but how do u get Ur gamer tag and achievements etc on this website :/?
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQwrOLH-x2c This should work :) I enjoyed the other two so I'm sure I'll like this one also.
  • I'm excited for this. 13 was ok, but I really liked 13-2.
  • eh, the video is no long available....
  • @13 took the words right out of my mouth. XIII had a great story in my opinion but like most I disliked the linear gameplay. XIII-2 was an improvement on gameplay but got rid of like 90% of the original story (L'Cie and Fal'Cie were barely mentioned). Hopefully this will resolve any issues and give an ending that this trilogy deserves. And on an off topic note, now that we've gotten a trailer for this, how about some info on VS XIII? That game needs to be made so Kingdom Hearts III can finally be made!
  • Looks like the video was taken down. Now to search youtube.

  • I thought 13 was decent. I actually really enjoyed 13-2 because its simplified the battle systems and I only had to keep up with 2 characters. FFX was my favorite of all of them than FFIX, but 13-2 would probably be my third favorite.
  • I'm looking forward to this.
  • Isn't this like the 24th FF title to be realeased? I keep asking myself, When will it be... the Final Fantasy?
  • Is it bad that I got to the end of 13-2, some monsters were too hard to beat and I would've had to grind but instead I just quit? Personally I don't give 2 sh*ts about anyone in that game besides Fang. I'd rather see FFX-HD come out.
