Aliens: Colonial Marines Hands-On Preview - Another Day in the Corps

Hadley’s Hope isn’t the most welcoming of places. Located on the barren, stormy surface of LV-426, it’s home to a colony of human terraformers attempting to bring life to an uninhabitable moon.

Well, it was the location of a human colony. Following the events of James Cameron’s classic action horror movie Aliens, Hadley’s Hope is now a ruined facility with no survivors.

Unaware of the site’s face-hugging, gut-ripping fate, a team of Colonial Marines has been dispatched to investigate Hadley’s Hope and rescue the crew of the USS Sulaco, the last marine ship to visit LV-426’s ravaged landscape.

Things don’t start well. Following a crash landing the marines find themselves a klick away from Hadley’s Hope, in the midst of an electrical storm, and with no way of getting home.

It’s pretty bad and they haven’t even met the locals yet.

That’s the set-up for Aliens: Colonial Marines and the opening for our recent hands-on demo of the game, in which we got a taster of about 20 minutes of the Gearbox shooter’s single-player. Here’s what we thought.

Aliens: Colonial Marines certainly makes a good first impression. The grey, looming skies of LV-246 look wonderfully dramatic, all broody monochrome sporadically lit with cracks of lightning. Hadley’s Hope looms in the distance.

The trek to the facility allows Gearbox to introduce the main players, including our protagonist Sgt. Winters, his marine squad mates, and Bishop - the same model of cyborg that came to such a messy end in Aliens. Brilliantly, it’s also played by the same actor, Lance Henrickson.

Once inside Hadley’s Hope it’s our job to trudge through the heavily damaged facility planting motion sensors in specific locations. This short section is almost completely without incident, marked only by a nagging sense of dread.

And then it all kicks off. One of the sensors goes down, we’re sent to investigate and before you know it Xenomorphs are attacking us from every angle, hurtling across the metal floors and skittering along the ceilings as we attempt to keep them at bay with our Pulse Rifles. They’re coming out the godamn walls!

H.R Giger’s creations still carry a fearsome fascination. Even after years of substandard sequels, the queasily sexual curves and folds of the Xenomorph still have the power to disturb. But then what would you expect of a creature conceived via oral rape?

There is a slight problem, however. While your first few sightings of the Xenomorph in Aliens: Colonial marines squeeze out a modicum of dread, pretty soon they’re just another thing to kill. There’s hundreds of them and an enemy can’t remain terrifying when they’re just disposable gun fodder.

So instead the mood is set by some great lighting and a few knowing winks to the events of the Aliens movie. You know that some horrible shit has gone down here, and possessing that knowledge while the game’s protagonists cluelessly stumble towards realisation is a powerful tool.

Indeed there are some brilliant little nods to the movie throughout, most noticeably in the audio. Thanks to Gearbox’s levels of access, things like the Pulse Rifle’s firing sound and the beeps of the motion sensor (which you can pop up at any time during the game) are actually the original audio files from the film. It’s wonderfully evocative.

The fan service runs deeper too. This is perhaps best exemplified by the discovery of two UA 571-C Sentry Guns stationed at the end of a corridor early in the game. One is completely out of ammo, while the other retains just a handful of rounds, a clear nod to one of the movie’s most tense scenes.

There’s evidence to suggest that level of fan service will be found throughout Aliens: Marines, as Gearbox displays a real love for the source material.

Unfortunately however, it’s not all good news. A later section of the opening has you picking up one of the Sentry Guns, placing it in a predetermined spot and seeing off wave after wave of attacking Xenomorphs.

Despite the presence of the iconic Smart Gun - that’s the one that straps onto your body and is mounted on an articulation arm - it’s just another FPS level where you’re blasting baddies until some arbitrary clock ticks down. It should be thrilling, but it’s just a grind.

What makes it worse is that combat is marked by XP unlock pop-ups alerting you to whatever new bit of customisation kit you’ve gained access to (XP is persistent across single-player and multiplayer). What should be an immersive experience is disturbed by obtrusive gamey guff.

And that’s our greatest worry about Aliens: Colonial Marines. It has the license and in many regards it uses it well. Getting to romp around familiar locations, blasting away with faithfully recreated weaponry is seductive, but beneath it all it’s just a fairly standard shooter.

There was little about the level or mission design that truly excited and the demo lacked any truly memorable sequences or set-pieces, something that games of this type live or die by. There weren’t any real frights either, not even the jump scares used to such good effect by Dead Space.

And judging by the endless hordes of Xenomorphs thrown at you during the game’s opening section, there’s a nagging feeling that even our smooth headed friends may lose their impact once the credits roll. Then it’s Game Over, man.

All the indications are that Aliens: Colonial Marines is set to be a solid if unremarkable shooter that makes occasionally great use of the license. We’re more than happy to play a game like that, but coming from a developer with the track record of Gearbox we could expect more.

Let’s just hope the rest of the game can deliver just that.

Aliens: Colonial Marines will be coming out of the walls on February 12th, 2013.

@1 you're not even going to give the game a chance?

Personally I am excited. I love aliens, so I am definitely going to give this a buy, or a rent at least. Most likely a buy to play survivor with my friends.

Hate to be "that guy"... But in the film Hadleys Hope is destroyed by the reactor blowing up. Thats why there's this whole rush to get back to the ship with the alarms and the smoke and the music... etc. I would really love this game to be good - the franchise lost its way after the fourth film (that shall not be named) and I've never really thought any of the titles were particularly good including the AVPs.

@5 that's a bit extreme 'one game = whole franchise destroyed', a bit narrow minded.

Mixed feelings about this. Aliens is a great film, possibly the best in the series (I love the first three), but it's become a massive fan wank symbol. It's ripped off constantly and here they are literally trying to recreate it. That's both a good and bad thing. The problem is that the alien itself is supposed to be extremely hard to kill, that in itself makes it terrifying. Aliens performed something of a disservice by saying "if you've got a big gun you can just blast your way through them".

As a huge Alien fan I'm definitely going to get this and I really liked the trailers. Although after reading this I'm not that sure if I buy it day one. I hope the multiplayer stays alive longer than on AvP...

I love the films, even the pretty poor AvP. The AvP game was awful but I have faith in gearbox delivering a proper Aliens experience. And criticising the game for throwing hundreds of aliens at you as cannon fodder, that was pretty much the premise of the film. But mainly first and foremost it's a game. There are going to be standard shooter gamin elements in it. Which is not always a bad thing. Collector's edition is going to be a day 1 purchase definitely

To quote Bishop from the film (y'know, the model they're resurrecting for the game?):

"In 19 minutes this area's gonna be a cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska."

To wit: There is no Hadley's Hope to explore.

I know it seems geeky or whatever, but for Gearbox to profess so much love for the Aliens film, use that as a selling point and then overlook something as important as the FUCKING CLIMAX so they could have their little game makes me think this is yet another piss-poor attempt to resurrect the Alien franchise similar to the bubbling cauldron of feces that was Prometheus.

I think I'm out on this one...

@9: Gearbox didn't exactly develop DNF in the truest sense, they essentially structured it using the work done by 3D Realms.

buying this game as soon as is possible, from a 2nd hand store....after DNF, i refuse to give any monies to gearbox

i want this game so much, i just hate the publisher, if the dev team was a seperate entity that i could donate to, i would much rather do that than pass anything on to randy pitchford (unless it was a deadly disease)

@1
AvP was by a different studio & publisher, you can't think that this will be the same.....the reason everyone was so excited about AvP was that we had heard about CM a long time ago, then it went silent, then this new AvP came onto the scene, riding on the name (which was a successful-ish series on the PC) and people went and bought it - those of us that didn't try the demo i presume that is, i tried the demo and deleted it before even finishing a whole game

i can't wait for the game myself, but it will be after painkiller & whatever else comes out mid-late february

I might bight it when it's cheap. I figured this would be the case fomr the get go. Just another generic shooter (or worse in this case, wave based anyone?) dressed in Alien license. Couldn't see it any other way either, seeing as it has 4 player co-op. Will be little to no fun by yourself and probably more playable with others...

@18 - That's what I'm saying! Could have sworn they were outrunning a huge detonation in that dropship at the end of the movie. Seems strange for them to just straight overlook that fact.

@20

Actually AVP was published by Sega however the game was developed by Rebellion...same developers of the original AVP on Jaguar console.

I do believe Gearbox can pull this off and won't flop like Rebellion did.

Everyone should not be judging on the Duke Nukem Forever game. For those that are unaware only 15 percent of the game was developed by Gearbox. The rest of the game was developed by 3D realms which took them over 12 years to complete it.

This preview pretty much nailed my concerns about this game. I really hope they take this kind of constructive criticism on board before it goes gold.

To be honest I was almost hoping for a cross between a movie and a game, the premise behind this project is great. The casting great. The stage set, but the fact that at the end of the day it's a video game brings with it certain limitations and realities..

I really need to readjust my expectations; but that's going to be tough considering how much I love the original trilogy.

@31: Sega published AvP, and while I have no doubt that Sega had some say in how AvP was developed, but most of what AvP is that way because of the developer, Rebellion Developments, who are known by many for either making gigantic steaming piles of xeno feces or some half-way decent games. This game is not being developed by Rebellion, but rather by Gearbox, who have a far better track record(Half-Life: Opposing Force, Borderlands, Brothers in Arms).

I think in the films AVP is a good way to explain the aliens, if anyone has seen the most recent addition "promethues" ... that is an unbelievably stupid way to explain how the aliens came to be, and after the predators had already created them, it was kinda stupid bringing another storyline into it.
For me the alien and predator games have always been pretty good, but i think playing as just an average marine been attacked by aliens is boring, and playng the aliens is too bouncy, fast and confusing, for me you cant beat stealthy skinning everyone as a predator so let me know when a DECENT predator game comes out, like Concrete jungle was.

As everyone seems to be getting all uppity and wanting to know how Gearbox is attempting to fob us off with the Hadleys Hope setting, despite it being a nuclear dust bowl, how about this. There were only 197 colonists on LV 426. In Aliens Directors Cut, the Marines, Sentry guns and Ms. Ripley must have accounted for at least half of these, as well as destroying the egg nest and killing the queen. So what I wanna know is, where the hell are "waves and waves" of xenos coming from?

The Xenos could possibly becoming from under the ground, if Hadleys Hope wasn't fully destoryed, like i said i'm just making guesses here. and beside everyone who keeps bitching about it being crap because of AVP, honestly shut up, sure Avp wasn't the best, but it doesn't mean gear box will stuff this one up, they spent a lot of time working on it.

i just want a good ass alien A.I. if its not this games going to blow, which will finalize my belief in sega as permanent crap subpar publisher. they don't like giving creators enough monies to crete a decent game, its always the bare minimum with them. Anyone who lets their flaghip titles(sonic)flounder says enough about them, its your mealticket wheres the effort. hopefully gearbox won't abandon this after launch and continue to upgrade it as needed which could possibly get them the I.P. they need. People still want first person alien control schemes, lets hope "the gamey stuff" can be turned off, and as far as i can tell the Multiplayer maps are nothing special by design. Heres to hoping they put the game of the year up for sale.
