Halo 4 Sells 4 Million, Sequel in Development, Infinity Challenge Revealed

Microsoft has today announced a barrage of Halo 4 news, revealing that the Halo series has shifted 50 million units to date, with the seven games preceding Halo 4 selling 46 million copies according to a report on GameSpot. That means Halo 4 has sold somewhere in the region of 4 million units to date, maths fans! 343 Industries has also declared that the next Halo title is “in early stages of development,” while the Halo 4 Infinity Challenge is set ot launch on December 17th. Phew.

First up, the Halo 4 Infinity Challenge is a free-to-enter tournament in partnership with Virgin Gaming that will track players' personal scores in War Games and the number of Spartan Ops chapters completed on global leaderboards. The idea therefore is to give all players of every skill level a chance to win one of more than 2800 prizes, while the grand prize winner in the War Games leaderboards will drive into the sunset in a UNSC-themed, V8-powered 2013 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor truck designed by 343 Industries.

The Spartan Ops grand prize winner meanwhile, will bag themselves an appearance in a future Halo game, the next of which will be the second instalment in the proposed Reclaimer Trilogy, with Halo 4 being the first chapter in said trilogy.

The qualifying phase for the Halo 4 Infinity Challenge begins on December 17th and runs until January 10th, with players competing on the War Games and Spartan Ops leaderboards. From January 12th until January 19th, players will then be tiered into three groups based on their qualifying leaderboard results, to enter the final phase. At this point, the finalist leaderboard will be reset, and prizes will be awarded to the top performers in each tier, who will then get the chance to battle for the grand prize. Sign up here: www.halo4infinitychallenge.com (localised sites go live on December 12th).

Players can also hit up Halo 4's Weekly Challenges as listed on Halo Waypoint for an opportunity to bag some prizes.

Finally, Spartan Ops will be going on hiatus for the holidays and will return in January. During the Spartan Ops break from 10th December, 343 Industries will re-enter five chapters from the first half of the season into Matchmaking as a “Best of Spartan Ops” compilation, then from 17th December-14th January, episodes 1-5 will be re-entered into Matchmaking (one episode per week) to support the “Halo 4 Infinity Challenge,” and allow anyone who missed or wants to replay a previous chapter to easily find teammates online.

Didn't 343 say that the Forerunner story was supposed to span over 3 games even before Halo 4 released?

I'm glad this includes Spartan Ops because with all the lag switchers its hard to see it be fare if it was just a straight up competition style event.

@2 jeezus Halo 4 just came out. Inject some more ritalin and calm down. People, or kids mind you, don't appreciate things and continually want more. Then you all bitch when yearly releases pop out. You paid a shit load for the game and probably more for the upcoming DLC. Just enjoy the fucking thing.

@10 the sad thing is people treat every new game they get as if it's some type of "Race" to see who on their friends list can either A. get all the achievements first, B. Reach the highest level in Multiplayer first C. Brag about it because it makes you feel cool for that moment. EVEN though no one really gives a shit about meaningless shit like that. If you do, you have what I like to call the Xbox 360 OCD sickness which in your head you believe that your life will not be right UNLESS you get to do a certain thing in that new game you just got. it eats at you until you get that 100% completion. why? I have no clue, but Game developers have noticed this trend for the last 3 years and have been milking the shit out of it ever since.

Hence the reason why people just blow through EVERY NEW game almost within the first month of having it, then after that they are back to being bored of it and cry about either it being to short, or to easy, or no DLC right off the bat, or etc. it goes on and on its very very sad, and i see it as a huge problem because its not just one or two people who are like this, it's literally millions of people with this issue.

and yet it goes unnoticed.

You'd be incorrect, judging by VGChartz.
OT: The work on the sequel isn't exactly surprising, given we already knew it was a new trilogy. 343 have done a superb job on Halo 4 though; finally played it round a flat-mates the other day :P

here are the charts for CoD: http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70716/call-of-duty-black-ops-ii/
and here is halo 4: http://www.vgchartz.com/game/51758/halo-4/

So basicly, those who have a life (that actually work, have girlfriend/boyfriend/kid) don't really have any chance ? How can I have a chance to win if I only average 1.5 hours of playtime on weekday and perhaps 2 or 3 on weekend against people that can play like 12 hours everyday if it's only base on the total of points and not something like k/d, spm or w/l ratio ?

@10 That seems like a pretty harsh reply to #2 O_o They didn't say anything about wanting it soon, they just said they can't wait. It's no secret that there will be a Halo 5, just because someone "can't wait" doesn't mean they want it released next month, no matter how crap that would make the game.

Don't expect Halo 5 to be a launch title. The new console will most likely be out November 2013 and that would be way too soon for a new main Halo game. I would actually expect Halo 2 Anniversay or the whole original trilogy remade before Halo 5.

Seems pretty pointless to me. I know there are kids who play this game non stop and already are like 70/80 level with my measly 44 following LOL

Also don't see why they have to be shuffling spartan ops episodes like that. I don't have any problems finding players, but then I only play most recent ones, so maybe i'm in the wrong here..

@13 what's wrong with achievement hunting? I love them because it gives games more replay value. And you experience a lot more of the game than you would if you just beat a game and had no reason to go back and try for the achievements you've missed.

Given that Halo 5 is “in early stages of development,” I think Microsoft are planning this to be a launch title for the new Xbox - and repeat the launch like they did with the original Xbox with the original Halo. It's a good tactic to play and one that I truly welcome.

halo 5 will not be a launch title for the coming microsoft console... halo 5 will be released november 2014... whereas all stars are alining for a November 2013 release for the new console.

what is interesting will be the launch of the upcoming call of duty... are we to have it solely for the current generation, or will activision make a bold move, and release it on new hardware also? it makes it hard for yearly franchises such as assassins creed, call of duty, etc to make a choice in calling when they swap completely to the new hardware... this generation of consoles is still capable of doing some amazing thing as we have seen with Halo 4, Call of Duty: BO2, etc... why switch when you will still sell tens of millions of units on this hardware...!? lets hope that publishing houses still look at the current hardware for another 9-12 months after the launch of new consoles!

Halo 4 sold something like 3.7 million it's first week which means it's only sold 300k the last 3 weeks. I'm interested in still playing it, but there's far too many other games I want to play right now.

I haven't got Halo 4 yet. I'm not that big a Halo fan. Halo 3 sucked for the first half then was excellent. Halo ODST was excellent in the levels but so damn boring in that empty city. Halo Reach just didn't amuse me. Felt like a chore to finish. And Halo: CE Ann was a game I expected to be Halo: CE but with HD graphics and all the extra functions (boarding and punching etc) of the later games. Also, replaying I realised how few levels there are. It's all fight in area a, fight in area B, grab plot item turn around and fight in area b, fight in area a. Halo Wars I actually really enjoyed froms tart to finish.

Anyway, I'll get Halo 4 at some point, and Halo 5 is a big name to release with a new MS console if they conincide. They'll get a lot of sales just based on that fact.

Please, for the love of god, go back to halo 3's ranking and xp system in all future halo games. The highest skill feature and constant rewards was what made it's mulitplayer so addictive, now when you get to level 40-50 in halo 4 it just gets boring

@24
There will NOT be an "original trilogy remake!" Halo 3 "WAS" made for the Xbox 360 - Halo CE & Halo 2 were made for the original Xbox. Halo 3 does NOT need to be remade. The whole point of "remastering" Halo: Combat Evolved" was to make it run natively on the 360, updated to HD (and widescreen) and achievements (of course)! Halo 2 will also be remastered the same way for the 360. That will have ALL of the "Halo" games be HD and give you achievements (the chance to unlock them, at least)... and all be playable on the Xbox 360 (and hopefully... on the next-gen Xbox, as well)!!! ;-)
