Microsoft Sells 750,000 Xbox 360s on Black Friday
Written Wednesday, November 28, 2012 By Dan Webb
View author's profile

This console generation may be coming to a close for most hardcore gamers (read, us), but in the US this past Friday Microsoft was still able to sell 750,000 Xbox 360s. The word you are looking for is "wow."

Black Friday, as its known in the US, which is the Friday after Thanksgiving where shoppers go nuts and spend their life savings, is usually a good period for Microsoft, and this year is no different. The 750,000 haul is said to have eclipsed the company's forecasts, although fallen short of the 960,000 units they sold on Black Friday last year.

This must be frustrating news for Nintendo, who announced that their Wii U sold only 400,000 units in its first 7 days on sale in the US - 350,000 short of Microsoft's haul of their 7 year old console on Black Friday.

Now, who's going to tell them that there's a new Xbox console supposedly out next year? Not me!

After a couple decades, you'd think Nintendo would learn to... you know, release actual games with their console. Same story with the PSVita. It only takes one title, Metroid, Zelda, some old school Squeenix top down JRPG (Secret of Mana HD, anyone?!) .. anything...anything else than the garbage they're offering at the moment; and the sales would've skyrocketed. Shame really. Another "acte manqué" by the Big N.

Nintendo has some good ideas for evolving consoles but they seem too arrogant in believing that no matter what games are published that the consumer will buy them just because its a Nintendo game.

I think the difference is how often the 360 seems to break down combined with the people that go OMGWTFBBQ THIS IS CHEAP and just buy stuff on a whim. Say a woman walking out with 7 friggin' coffeemakers while I was casually browsing.

@13 I am not gonna say 360s don't break down but I have had a 360 sense launch and only broke it once and it was my fault not the machines.

on the other hand my ps3 stopped working after 1 week.

As I said not saying anything but all electronics break down.

The reason the Wii U only sold 400k units is because that's all there was. It's sold out in most stores. By comparison, the original Wii sold only 300k units during the same week in 2006, so at least they've upped production. I'm glad to see the 360 still going strong, but I bet in 2005 MS wasn't able to get quite as many consoles sold that same week...

@15 Yet another reason why Nintendo fails. Not producing enough of their products for launch and during times when people are willing to spend. Good news for Sony and Microsoft though.

I just hope they get the SEGA punishment and stop developing these outdated (hardware) and gimmicky consoles with a very limited online service. Just let them focus on developing their games for the real consoles. Maybe then they'll be able to make a profit.

@16 I'll agree with you about Nintendo's single minded approach, especially when it comes to their wacky online offerings.

If anyone recalls the 360 and PS3 launches though,(even PS2 for that matter) I promise you they produced less consoles respectively compared to Nintendo's during the same sales window.

Always love how journalists put their spin on things... Like saying Nintendo could only manage to sell 400,000 consoles, rather than saying Nintendo sold all 400,000 available consoles due to slow production or whatever. The Wii-U sold out, there just weren't that many to go round. I'm no fanboy (not even planning on getting one), I'm just saying... Lol

Happy to see 360 still going strong. I'm personally in no rush for a new generation.

@18, I really don't know about this. I've been to Target about five times since the launch of the Wii U and every time they've had them in stock. Even at about 6:30 p.m. on Black Friday. Unless Target is just staggering their stock (which doesn't make sense) it's not selling as well as I would have expected.

Hmm although it's nice to see the console still selling strong I just hope it doesn't inspire Microsoft to delay the 720 to 2014. Not surprised to hear the Nintendo Wii U sold poorly as there's been little to no buzz for the console, plus like the Wii it will be the weakest console in a years time with the next gen consoles being released.

Lets be real, if these two things were equal between the two consoles, Nintendo would have sold way, way more consoles: Cost and Availability.

Since these two were not equal, this article is silly.

It would be like saying Ford sold more cars one week than Ferrari, therefore more people want Fords than ferraris.

The wii-u did not sell out. There were tons and tons of them in the Best Buys in my area. I guess people were just not interested in them. Even now after Black Friday, I have walked into Best Buy and still see a lot of Wii-U's

I also live in Miami, just in case someone might think I live in the middle of nowhere & say that's the reason why there's so many in your area lol

I remember when the first Wii came out, you could not find any of them for months & whenever some of them came into any store, you had to go early and get a ticket because they only had a small supply of them

@22 Damn, and I thought I was good at trolling -.-'

Are you saying that the Wii-U is a Ferrari and the 360 is a Ford?

The Wii-U launched 7 years after the 360 and (in my opinion) still isn't as good as the other consoles. The hardware is pretty much the same, the games that are available aren't that impressive and their online service is a complete joke compared to XBL and PSN.

Not to mention the fact that the batteries for the iPad controller run out after 3 hours, little amount of memory on the HD, your account is forever linked to the console and the very little 3rd party support (which killed the PS Vita btw).

Feel free to add the negatives I forgot.

And then you read articles consoles are dying lol! Well here,s proof they not. Normaly in the old days i def wanted to have every console out there but as far i seen the release list of the Nintendo U i,m not even intrested realy and sinds the U doesn,t improve graphics or so i rather wait for the next gen. What one can tell from the picture is what most older gamers already know..oh boy!! more frustrated youngsters on consoles, effect? Basicly what most already experinced: trash talking kids, shouting, cursing on MP games not even suited for their ages. Ah well. Anyways good job MS :)

@74, How can it be silly? I find it important to compare this generations consoles (Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and wii) with next generation consoles.

Whats silly is that the brand spanking new wii u is so damn outdated and slow even a 7 years old Xbox 360 is faster, and that developers cant release their games on the new console because its to slow with the example of 4A Games who wanted to release Metro: Last Night on the new wii but the console was to slow for it. This is important information to me since articles like this shed light on something i maybe didnt think of.

To twist your example with the car brands. the difference in price is so small between wii u and the xbox 360 so let me put it this way, this article says to me, in your way of thinking:

Ferrari pushed the price down just to a few thousand dollars over a ford for only one day, ford was still able to sell more cars that day.

youre just seeing it wrong wich makes your argument is weak.

The Wii U sold out in most places, if there would've been a lot more stock, it could've possibly beaten the 360's 750k number.

For those saying that Nintendo only sold what was available, I will say that is false. I work at Target in the electronics department. My store is located in a college town and we still have two basic and one deluxe version available as of last night. The problem I have noticed is not many people even know about it from what I understand. Marketing has been pretty poor in regards to what it actually is. Many people who I have spoken too believed it was an accessory to the Wii kinda like the Kinect, in which case they would not fork over 250+ for it. Once I explain to them what the Wii U is they immediately say something like "so its like a tablet to play games?" In return they prefer to purchase an Ipad or another tablet.

Pretty much 2 types of people buying those Xboxs:
1) People replacing their old Elites etc with the new Xbox slim
2) A few people who still don't have an Xbox actually buying one

I bet over half of those sales were to people who already own an Xbox, which doesn't matter to M$, a sale is a sale, but it doesn't mean 750,000 people who previously didn't own an Xbox now do. Impressive numbers still, but not entirely surprising.

I don't know where people are getting this stuff about the system being sold out in North America. If its because of something Reggie Fils-Aime said well...you've been lied to. I work at a major electronic retailer and we had plenty of the white 8 GB models from opening night to this day. Wii U consoles are in no way in demand because if they were...we would be completely sold out. I was working the whole Black Friday weekend, we were never completely out. We did sell out one 360 bundle pack though.

In a highly populated area we I am (10 minutes from downtown Philadelphia) if it didn't completely sell out here, its unlikely that it sold out (I mean both models) anywhere else but the boonies.

@46 Ok, sorry about the intelligent comment, lol ;). To be fair I stand corected about the Wii U being sold out - I saw some at Target & Walmart here in town. Sucks too because I bought an extra one to sell on eBay but some of those sellers are now taking a hit just to move it. Might just return it now.

Nintendo has been doing their own thing pretty much since the N64 with it's odd contoller & cartridge games. As an old shool Nintendo gamer, I'll always give them a shot. At the same time, I'm not blind to the missteps they've made - particularly with the Wii U. This new console was in no way properly marketed before the launch - or even now for that matter. It's online support is...different for lack of a better term. I think everybody here can agree that XBL is a model to be followed for ease of use and once again Nintendo has nerffed the capabilities of it's own machine.

Well from the rumors of the new xbox coming out they are pretty much copying the wiiu. Even the controller. This will be interesting. But if they really do that... Good by Nintendo. You had a good run. You should have learned created a system will a crap online network and no trophies/achievements. I wanted to like the wii but it just sat and collected dust.
