There's alot of speculation over at the Bungie.net forums if this is either fake or real. Because of how Bungie likes to trick their fans into thinking something when it isn't a reality. Like with the cancellation of Halo 2 for 24 hours.
Most people think that the home page was actually giving hints that it was fake like the "PLEASE BE CALM" "EXPECT DELAYS" "LIES" and what not.

The fact that the countdown stopped at axactly 00:12:00:00 makes me realise that the planned this all along. This means that they will either announce something big anyway, or were just pumping fans for something they will announce some other day or in another game event. Hell, if they were announcing something this E3, they probably would have done it in the main MS event. |

bungie are masters at hyping things out to the extreme maximum possible before mids explode... this could be announced to bring up the hype and get everyone interested and steal the spotlight at E3...

also on kotaku they had a interview something with mtv games or w/e and microsoft said it was a halo game but not part of the trilogy
