Ex-Free Radical Employees Reveal Why Publishers Turned Down TimeSplitters 4

As Crytek continues to attempt to drum up support for TimeSplitters 4, two ex-Free Radical employees have revealed why publishers turned the project down in 2008.

TimeSplitters co-creator Steve Ellis says that a working demo prototype of the game was made following the release of the PS3-exclusive flop Haze. But publishers simply weren’t interested.

“TimeSplitters 4 was in the very early stages of development when Free Radical went into administration,” said Ellis. “A small playable demo was shown to several publishers, but it didn’t attract any publishing deals.”

According to Crytek UK’s managing director Karl Hilton publishers were worried that Free Radical couldn’t deliver, thanks to the poor reception of Haze.

“We pitched it to a lot of publishers,” he said. “And from each of them we got the same two responses. Firstly, they would ask what happened with Haze. We were the company that made a series of high-rated shooters and then we had released Haze, which wasn’t as well received. This worried them.

“Secondly, their marketing person would say something alone the lines of, ‘I don’t know how to sell this.’ The unanimous opinion among all publishers that we pitched TimeSplitters 4 to is that you can’t market a game that is based around a diverse set of characters and environments – you need a clear and easily communicated marketing message, and TimeSplitters doesn’t have one.

“Perhaps they are all right. Perhaps this is why the previous games in the series achieved much more critical success than commercial success. For these reasons, one by one they all declined to sign the project.”

Earlier this month Crytek boss Cevat Yerli said that if TimeSplitters 4 was to have any chance of getting made - even the slimmest chance - an online petition would have to reach 300,000 signatures.

At the time of writing, despite a couple of high-profile media pushes, that number lies at 67,246.

As much as we’d like to see TimeSplitters 4, perhaps the lack of support for the series suggests that *whisper it* the publishers were right.

Critical success doesn't necessarily equal sales, take Bayonetta

Even if it was released it'd probably just get buried beneath all the modern shooters.

Why not release a Timeplitters HD collection or a tweaked TS2 (like Perfect Dark) on XBLA and see how that does.

I was one of the first players/testers of haze back in 2007,
and i was shocked that it was so dumb and looked so shitty.
When it was released a year later i looked it up and omg they did nothing to the game i played 1 year before.
Same dumb AI, textures from 1998 etc.

So yeah i can understand the publishers.

I'm a huge TimeSplitters fan, but honestly I do not want to see a TimeSplitters 4. Haze was awful, and there have been so many changes in both the FPS market and Free Radical's staff since TS3 that the chances are TS4 would tarnish the franchise. Let the series stay as the fantastic trilogy that it is.

The solution... release a TimeSplitters HD Collection. You're guarenteed to sell at least 67,246 copies :P

All I know is that I would buy it if it were released.

That goes for Timesplitters 4, or even 2 or 3 released on XBLA.

Once again, that article is referencing Timesplitters HD, not Timesplitters 4.

Timespliiters 4 is highly unlikely, Timesplitters HD would be great.

This has always been a small series, commercially speaking. Having been console exclusive hasn't helped, I've never played any of the 3 games, nor do they seem anything special when I watch them on YouTube.

@9 - Even they won't all buy it. Having masses of internet support before release, doesn't help if they all pirate it instead.

I think the problem is Timesplitter's to the studio's is a cult game and not a classic.

@3: You can't self publish on XBLA, and it's extremely difficult with retail releases.

As for the "I don't know how to sell this" comment... If someone who works in marketing and/or sales doesn't know how to sell something, then they ain't good at their job. It's like saying "I dunno how to sell a small fat plumber on acid who collects coins."

Well if they still can't find a publisher then why not try Kickstarter now?
It's worked out well for stuff like Obsidian's Project Eternity or Star Citizen.

I'm sure it would probably have an okay chance and as for the petition, I'm not sure if that's a good representation of fans in the first place simply down to how many folk that probably just don't like signing online petitions or mean to and forget or whatever.

I'd settle for a HD remake of the originals. I had so much fun with MP on Timesplitters, I would sink some hours in for sure. Shame it looks unlikely. Haze was average, and I enjoyed it to some extent. But not groundbreaking.

Getting 300k signatures for ANY game, let alone a title with niche appeal like Timesplitters is difficult. The developers put it at such a high number because they know this game will never see the light of day, at least on disc. XBLA is a definite possibility and I'd love to see it.

Uhhh... sorry but fuck you? Seriously, I really wish I could meet Cevat face-to-face so I could tell that to him.
What game made me love house party gaming? TimeSplitters 2.
What game sparked my love for shooters? TimesSplitters 2.
What game made me want to become a designer? TimeSplitters 2.
What hopeful sequel made me buy Crysis 2 to show the dev some support? TimeSplitters 4.

That guy just keeps teasing "Oh, oh, we'd take up the series if there was any desire."
In the words of the great JonTron: "Fuck you! I aiiiin't havin that shit!"
We've shown him, again and again, if he just took the leap, we'd show the support to come meet him. Doesn't Crytek have enough powerful flagship IPs to take a damn risk? And it's not like with the proper, rather minimal, effort, that this thing could totally avoid being a flop.
Will it be AAA? No. Will it contend with the year's Call of Duty or Halo? No. Will it have powerful support, go down as another cult favorite, and at least make some decent returns? Hell yes.
Yerli, get off your freaking hardcore-shooter high-horse and just give us SOMETHING!

Hell, maybe it's time to try to ship the series to Projekt CD Red. Those guys at least seem to have some heart still in their design and are ready to take some leaps of faith.

Don't people realize Haze was out a few years ago? It was an early PS3 title and the hardware was still getting used to by developers. This is just a stupid excuse.

WOAH. Hold the phone! They didn't seem special when you watched them on youtube?
You wanna know why? Timesplitters was all about FUN. Said fun isn't emulated very well when you're merely watching some random guy play it on youtube. Fair doos, they might be somewhat funny, like Rooster-teeth, NerdCubed or Nova, but you still don't capture that essence.
OT:
This is the most moronic thing I have ever heard. One bad game? One bad game that isn't even connected to the series in general and that's enough for them to write it off completely?
*Sigh*
According to wikipedia Crytek UK do 'recruitment drives' at my university. Maybe I can indoctrinate some of those potential recruits... ;)

I never even had a chance to try Haze. Surely it can't be as bad as everyone is saying...? Well, I don't care much about it either way. I would like to see another Timesplitters game, but there is plenty of solid titles coming out each year, that I won't miss it all that much.

it sucks that just because of Haze they tarred Free radical, but maybe its best left as an awesome trilogy, no need for money farming sequals, its good as it is.
So many game franchise have been ruined by money farming:
Forza
Hitman
assassins creed
gears of war
dead space
fable
star wars
... face it, none of the "next gen" sequals even compare to the legendary origional games.
i think GTA is still the only one going thats still got the zest of playability that is has from day 1, even though GTA 4 was grey-brown building after building ... hopefully GTA 5 will bring the vice city and san andreas days back.
