Halo 4 Biggest Entertainment Launch of the Year, Makes $220 Million in First 24 Hours

Microsoft has released some sales details for Halo 4 and they’re predictably impressive.

According to the platform holder, the 343 Industries developed sequel made $220 million worldwide in its first 24 hours on sale, making it the biggest entertainment launch of the year to date.

“Biggest entertainment launch” is a tricky term. The example being cited is that in the US alone Halo 4 out-performed both The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

But that’s not entirely surprising. A game is considerably more expensive than a movie ticket.

Despite this, Halo 4 is performing particularly well, with Microsoft claiming the shooter is on track to reach $300 million in its first week.

In the game’s first five days players racked up 31.4 million hours of play time while the Halo franchise has produced over 5 billion hours of play to date.

All this comes despite Halo 4 faring less well at launch than both Halo 3 and Halo Reach.

There’s also the small matter of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. I’m sure Activision will be making similar statements of success in the coming days.

More bluntly, "biggest entertainment launch" is a stupid term. No shit Halo 4 made more money, as it says in the article, games cost more than movie tickets. It's a stupid comparison that they shouldn't be making. Claim to be the biggest video game launch of the year, sure. Just get your bragging in now before Activision releases Black Ops 2 numbers and makes your e-peen look embarrassingly small.

Good for the little guys at 343i, a well-deserved success.

Also,a movie lasts for an hour and a half for 10 bucks. A game like Halo is 10 hours of solo campaign + hundreds of hours of multiplayer for 60$. That's a bargain. People are much more mindful of those facts nowadays.

I think there's a typo in there regarding the 31 billion / 5 billion stats, doesn't add up chief.

After many years of gamers endlessly slaving away in the Halo franchise multiplayer, it's trumped several times over in just a matter of days? Yeah, right.

Stats like the 5 billion hours makes you think - wouldn't the human race be better if we had dedicated that time to curing cancer or something.

That said, I'll go home tonight and play my xbox anyway.

Good news for them. I'll get it when it's cheap. I enjoy Halo in co-op but beyond that it's not really my thing. ODST was great though.

Copy & Paste: Same game again 2 won't beat Halo 4 in terms of Xbox only sales.

Don't worry, BO2 will smash this, although I didn't get BO2 or Halo. Both are bad, IMO.

i know this will probably give fan boys ammunition against each other, but i think it would be interesting to find out, after black ops 2 has been released how much that has made on xbox alone,it has the advantage of been multi format when sales figures come out,but $220 million for me,is a brilliant achievement in its first week, when its only available on one format

It's funny how excited people get about games and how defensive they get if someone trashes their favourite game.
If they feel this way about games god knows how they feel about spouses, kids and their relatives - one joke about their wife's moustache and you'd be in hospital for a year I reckon!

@4 but your point is not valid because ANYONE can go to the Cinema, whereas only people with a 360 can play Halo 4. The potential customer base is much less for video games than movies.

Now go cry in the corner.

I seriously am saddened as someone who is currently studying for a career in game design to see that a game like black ops will over take a game like halo in sales.. Halo is good.. very good, not the best, story was alright levels were kinda eh, spartan ops is a great idea, MP is ok copies a little too much from cod.. but it still feels like halo. Just the thought that theres a guy out there getting paid top dollar to copy and paste, then having a record breaking game in numbers of sales really makes me sad for the world. Games are about innovaitng and working to make something better and more exciting. When a game has a perfect formula (original MW MP) you leave it and try to make it better... every game has been the same since then

You can't compare this to BLOP2, since it will be on multiple platforms! (360, PC, PS3, WiiU)

I would like to see the numbers for for BLOPS 2 360 vs HALO 4.

Remember how many platforms Call of Duty is released on. It'd be an embarrassment is Call of Duty didn't win. Not that it has anything compared to Halo 4 on gameplay. Cause everyone knows Halo kicks ass. ;)

I'll also add to my previous comment. The Call of Duty series has sold over a 100 millions copies across all platforms and across 9 games. However... The Halo series has sold 46 millions copies across a single platform(except Halo 2) and got those sales across only 7 games(not including Halo4). Just those figures how you want.
In my opinion it clearly shows Halo would be a lot more successful if released on all platforms. Thankfully its not on all platforms though. ^^

@24: Hah, never thought of that before. Good to see someone using facts and stats to provide a counter-point to CoD sales other than "lol bo2 g0nn4 5uck".

@14 that wasn't what I was asking... It said the game got 31.4 billion hours in a week when the franchise got 5 billion.

THat's good for them. I enjoyed campaign, it could be a bit longer, but in CoD terms this is more similiar to Activision behemoth than any other Halo games. MP is even updated with perks and killstreaks. Even Microsoft can't deny that it's best to put in your game what sells most and we all know what that is=)
