"Road Rash Seems Like a Good Fit for Criterion," Says Creative Director

Criterion Games’ Creative Director believes that "Road Rash seems like a good fit” for the studio.

Craig Sullivan reiterated that Criterion intends to return to the Burnout series, but also said that he would like to do a new Road Rash game.

Road Rash debuted on SEGA Megadrive back in 1991. It mixed bike racing with combat, allowing you to whack your competitors with chains, bats and nunchuks.

A number of sequels and ports followed the original release but there hasn’t been a new Road Rash game since Road Rash: Jail Break for PSone in 1999.

"There's still a lot we want to do with driving and we will make another Burnout game at some point," said Sullivan.

"Obviously, as we're working on NFS we're thinking of really good ideas that aren't right for this series; there are ideas that we're going to explore with Burnout."

When asked what classic series Sullivan would like to remake, he responded by talking about Road Rash and a game without vehicles.

"When we did Burnout Paradise we did some motorbike DLC and now everyone thinks that we're going to do a Road Rash game at some point.

“I had a lot of fun playing that game, we think bikes are fun. We might make a Road Rash game...But we might make a game without vehicles in it.

“I mean, we made Black, I was the lead designer - we might make a game about blowing the crap out of each other."

So a new Road Rash game from Criterion is a million miles from a dead cert, but it’s something to mull over. Sullivan concluded by saying, "Road Rash seems like a good fit for Criterion."

Criterion is currently working on Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which is due out in November. Our latest preview can be found here.

  • Road Rash was the dogs, really hope for a sequel at some point!
  • This game is long over due. One of the best games of the 16 Bit Era If any game is deserving of a remake, it's this! Criterion is definatly a Dev that could do this game justice!
  • Holy crap its just like how my dad and I always imagined it! A Road Rash remake,I still remember sticking in that long cartridge in and getting ready to take some bikers down, good stuff
  • How bout doing an HD remake of Black, then do a sequel? I don't know how the first Black holds up today, but it was a pretty bad ass shooter when it was first released. Been waiting to hear about a sequel for a long time. I remember there was talks about a Black 2 a long time ago, but I doubt that project is still alive.
  • Never played Black on the Xbox. Seen it on GoD but would rather play a HD update than the original.
  • nostaglia alert, i remeber this badboy from the good ol days those crossroads were as nerve racking as it got back then, ace game. how about a desert/jungle strike remake while youre at it.
  • defo up for a new road rash!! @6 mate the desert/jungle strike games were top,, loved them
  • Oh please let this happen! Road Rash was one of the best games EVER! The game would rule with MP.
  • This would be awesome, they'd have to mix it up a bit as Road Rash was a bit repetitive. Desert Strike and Jungle Strike are amongst my earliest gaming memories so these would also be very welcome!
  • Could be good if done right
  • Road rash was epic. I miss my pink dirt bike that basically went at warp speed.
  • @1 "was the dogs" is that a game reference or something lmao first I've heard that.
  • Omg, the hours I put in that game, one of my all time favourites
  • Oh the amount of love I would give to a new Road Rash, make this happen!
  • @12 "the dogs" is short for "the dogs bollocks", English slang for its really good.,
  • Ah....the no saving/enter code system to keep track of your progress! So many codes as a kid!
  • Hope this happens, this game was amazing!
  • I don't know how he didn't cream that last white car?! I think that a HD XBLA Release would be good for RR. JS and DS were pretty awesome.
  • hope there is civilian on the street that i can ran-over like on ps1 ahh good old time..
  • One of the best games of that Gen. Pleeeeeease make it happen. Criterion are the perfect match for this IP:)
  • I'd love a Black HD. Wasn't Bodycount by some of the same people as Black? Shame it sucked. But yeah, Black HD / Desert Strike remake or maybe a HD XBL/WP game would rule!
  • That would be awesome! I can imagine the competitive MP now... hitting people with crowbars, the swearing-angry person as a result. Sounds like fun
  • Road Rash 64 = Best. THE DREADED "SPOKE JAM". I can still remember my poster that came with it. "180mph slap in the face"
  • Oh Hell Yeah!! Road Rash = Awesome Criterion = Awesome Please Do This Im A Huge Fan Of Both Dev And Game Oh And Please Stop Talking About Black....I Meen How Rude When There's Talk ABout This
  • MAKE BLACK 2
  • Had Jailbreak on my old playstation, absolutely loved that game! really violent, great bikes, great tracks! this news makes me very happy =)
  • I'd love yo see that, And I bet Criterion might be the only one who can do justice to the franchise
  • black hd remake and/or black 2 please! :P
  • And nobody mentions Skitchin'?!!! That game has no (player controlled) vehicles! :D Awesome soundtrack too (Bellybutton Lint, Cheese Grater etc). Still play Road Rash 2 the odd time on an emulator, music is still great to this day! What EA should do is release a EA Collection akin to the Sega Megadrive/Genesis collection, with the Strike games, the Rash games, Skitchin', General Chaos... the list is immense!!
  • There's a lot I'd give to see another Road Rash, even a few body parts.
  • Yes! Please obtain the IP Criterion. You would be perfect! I still remember me and a friend playing road rash on his genesis. There was this glitch where sometimes when you took a jump you wouldnt come back down. That and beating the cop off their bike XD.
  • Oh happy old gaming days!! When it all seemed so simple and gamestudios still came up with orgiginal ideas for games, Road Rash was one of those games that you could play for hours just because it was fun! I def hope they make a proper remake. A remake or HD make-over of the old Black woudn,t be bad either to be honest, it was stated then as the first FPS shooter with destructable parts of buildings ect. I loved it!! Is it just me or wasn,t there like two more Road Rash games later for the Playstation?
  • please make this game
  • Skitchin'....the memories that hit me as soon as I read that
  • oh please just do it, with the exception of jail break which IMO sucked this series was one f the most enjoyable racers there was @32 there was 2 more on the playstation but they came before jailbreak not after
  • EA Warrington was working on a new Road Rash game about 7 years ago before they were disbanded and the studio closed. It looked pretty awesome too.
  • Road Rash 64 was fun. I still remember the "Scooter" cheat and was really funny. Black HD or Black 2 please. One of the best FPS shooters ever. I would really wish Criterion can get the Xtreme-G license. Just like WB Games got the Turok license.
  • This game should've already been a Arcade remake because it would have sold like hot cakes. SO MAKE IT ALREADY.
  • I remember playing this on the N64 way back in days in the basement of my parents house. Good memories.
  • This was my fav game growing up. I used to play this on my Sega Genesis almost everyday after school & the weekends. My fav part was watching the endings.
  • Would a revisit to the series with a brand new game do the originals any justice? Hard to say. But for the love of the gaming Gods, if you've no interest in revitalizing the series yet, please just re-release a HD version of the originals on XBLA. PLEASE!!!
  • I loved the Road Rash series, i think Road Rash CD on the Sega CD was probably my favorite. I always hoped one of these would pop up on the arcade I would buy day one instead of waiting on a sale like usual.
  • @12 - @15 got there before me :D
