Mirror's Edge: Rhianna Pratchett Unveiled as Writer

Mirror's Edge: Rhianna Pratchett Unveiled as Writer
Written Thursday, July 10, 2008 by Dan Webb

EA and DICE today announced that leading games industry woman, Rhianna Pratchett is the writer behind the unique Mirror's Edge. Pratchett is known for her roles in making Heavenly Sword and Overlord a huge success and looks to carry on that with this upcoming free-running FPS.

“It was a great experience working with the team at DICE to help breathe life into Faith; her world, relationships and backstory,” said Rhianna Pratchett. ”My heroines and heroes have always been the ones who were ordinary, but through the events of a story, became extraordinary. Faith is skilled, but she's certainly not a superhero. She has her flaws, like all of us. In short: she's real. That's her appeal.”

Not aware of the story? Well, Gametrailers have posted a story video to get you up to speed.

In an era where FPS titles are as common as movie-game tie ins, the genre certainly needs something fresh and Mirror's Edge looks to deliver this. In an interview with Gametrailers, Senior Producer Owen O'Brien stated that it is actually possible to complete the game having not fired a gun [which is one of the achievements] which would usually be unheard of in this genre. Anything new and innovative is fine by us.

First I've heard or seen anything about it.

It'll be one of the best if it plays out well, but I'm always weary of FPS with an emphasis on melee. Games like Breakdown and Condemned 2 could've been much more solid if the melee FPS controls were so complicated and clunky. It sounds simplified though, which is good.

Definitely in my top five games I can't wait to play. I really hope Dice manage to pull it off.

Interesting concept and development. This may be one I look at down the road. I've never really been one for FPS games, but the fact that this one is somewhat skill based (as in human skill at the controller) has me interested.

I just added this to my wishlist.

So do they have super powers like some matrix bullshit or are you just an average person doing all this?

Snow Crash meets Esurance? Not so sure about this one. I'll have to see how the gameplay is on the demo.

#6 - You're just a regular everyday person who is just incredibly skilled at what she does.

this looks amazing. with all the free-running and (almost) weaponless (as in guns) combat, it seems like a futuristic assassin's creed. makes me wonder how assassin's creed 2 might look as well...

Its a nice idea. But to only have first person perspectives on a game that is heavily platform based is a little restrictive and makes controls hard to use. Think of how hard it was to judge where the edge of the cliff was when you ran for a jump in tomb raider... now imagine trying to do it in first person perpective... ewww... Be nice if it works though

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
